In a bombshell new Buzzfeed News exposé, Ren & Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi has been accused of statutory rape, sexual harassment, and possession of child pornography by two of his former employees.

Robyn Byrd says she sent John K a fan letter when she was just 13, telling the cartoonist she wanted to be an animator some day. To her surprise he responded with encouragement, sparking up a mentor relationship.

He sent her art supplies, set her up with her first AOL email account, and even visited her at her home in Arizona.

Then when she was 16, he flew her out to his Los Angeles home, where she says he first touched her — on her genitals, over her pajamas.

After that school year was over, he flew her out again and got her a summer internship at his animation company, Spumco. She lived with him as his girlfriend at the time. This was 1997; she was still 16.

After she graduated, she says she moved in with Kricfalusi full time and was given a job at the studio. Byrd was 17 years old. The age of consent in California is (and was at the time) 18, making this a clear case of statutory rape at the least.

Byrd's sexual abuse allegations have never been made public, but the "relationship" — which lasted off-and-on until 2002, has apparently been an open secret within the world of animation for years.

Multiple artists questioned for the story said they'd heard about Kricfalusi sexually harassing female artists, especially teenage girls. (Nickelodeon fired him in 1992, before any of this occurred, reportedly due to creative differences.)

Years later, in 2008, Byrd found out one of her animator friends from the time had also been a teenage pen pal of Kricfalusi's.

While Katie Rice had never been touched sexually, she says Kricfalusi wrote her flirty emails and masturbated while on the phone with her.

He gave her a job when she was 18, after which she says the sexual harassment was nonstop. She says she quit after two alleged incidents: a "half threat" of rape during a Weird Al concert and when she found child pornography on Kricfalusi's computer — featuring nude girls as young as 10.

Buzzfeed spoke to an ex-girlfriend from around 2007, who said she too found these sorts of images.

When asked about the accusations, John K's lawyer denied he had ever owned child porn, responding with the statement:

"The 1990s were a time of mental and emotional fragility for Mr. Kricfalusi, especially after losing Ren and Stimpy, his most prized creation. For a brief time, 25 years ago, he had a 16-year-old girlfriend. Over the years John struggled with what were eventually diagnosed mental illnesses in 2008. To that point, for nearly three decades he had relied primarily on alcohol to self-medicate. Since that time he has worked feverishly on his mental health issues, and has been successful in stabilizing his life over the last decade. This achievement has allowed John the opportunity to grow and mature in ways he'd never had a chance at before."

Being depressed over getting fired is not an excuse for sexually abusing a minor. Ugh.
