Despite mostly negative reviews, Will Smith's latest film, I Am Legend, is raking it in at the U.S. box office this weekend.
The movie made a very impressive $30 million on Friday and is expected to take in $80 million total this weekend.
The film's take is good enough for the biggest December opening ever.
Will Smith is the new king of the box office!
Also opening this weekend was the new Chipmunks movie, which also performed much better than expected. That film should take in about $40 million, almost double what had been predicted.
And, finally, Nicole Kidman's latest disaster, Golden Compass, completely disintegrated at the box office this past weekend.
It'll be interesting to see if she can command a hefty payday for her next film. She's movie poison!
Will Smith does exceptionaly well at the box office because people love him. People love him cuz he's a nice guy and he's interesting as hell. Nicole Kidman has become borrrrring, and it reflects in her lack of power at the box office. Same goes for the Brangelina skanks. They're so transparently phoney they're sickening. Long live Will Smith. Box office death to the likes of Kidman and Brangelina.

my husband and i went tonight (saturday). our theater was packed. there were plenty of suspenseful/funny/tearjerker parts. it was AMAZING !!!!! it had an awesome ending the whole thing was genius ! i don't know how anyone could give it a bad review. everyone seemed to enjoy it where we were. now that i think of it though some of those funny parts weren't so funny as much as they were sad once you really got into the movie. I would definitely go see it if you haven't.
I love you Perez but how about we blame the writers, director, editor, executives and every single person that is responsible for the creative presentaion of this book adaptation. The actors should be the last to blame in this case, you expose a lot of truth so lets keep it real.

I personally HATE post-apocalyptic movies and I protested going to see this one but the boyfriend made me go and I'm sooooooo glad he did!! This movie was phenomenal!! My back still hurts a little from being tense the entire movie. So much suspense! And Will's naked chest was worth the price of admission! (o-kayyyyy!!)

The only reason this movie made so much opening weekend is because of the thousands of Batman fans who were waiting months to see the new Dark Knight trailer at the beginning of Legend. Christian Bale and Heath Ledger are the new KINGS of the opening weekend. Wait til July 2008 and see it really explode!!!!!!!!!!

And Nicole Kidman isn't that bad of an actress although I did hear that Golden Compas was a little boring

I'm not sure what you mean because most reviews i read were good actually. they pointed out some mistakes but on the whole it was delicious. i live will smith and i twas eerie to see my little new york like that, or how it probably will look in 50 years. eek!
Perez is just full of shit. The movies has 60% on rotten tomatoes, which means no masterpiece but not a disaster. Maybe he did not like it because will smith in the film is not looking for a cure for AIDS or something, something that Perez will probably die of

Number One does not equal a movie disaster, not even in the crazy mixed-up world you live in, in your head. Bullshit about the box office poison comment-New Line caved to the Christian Right and made a watered down version of what that movie could have been. Do your homework!
#38 3:10 to Yuma and American Gangster were not flops. They both made over budget. Russell Crowe is not box office poison. And since when was Jessica Alba a "big" star?
Hairspray, with John Travolta, was not a flop. Budget was 75 mil and it made around 118 mil. Get your facts straight.
The film is terrific. Will is very good, though not Oscar worthy. Super effects, best ever. Nice job overall. Its something for all ages except for maybe the little ones who will have nightmares forever.
If you like this sort of film you will love this movie. If you like special effects so real they don't look like special effects you will love this movie. If you love dogs you will love this movie. If you like Will Smith you will love this movie because he is in almost every scene and does a good job. If you don't love these things then just stay home and leave seats for those of us who do love it to see it again.

I DUNNO WHY EVERYONE KEEPS RIPPIN ON THAT GOLDEN COMPASS MOVIE. WHETHER IT WAS SHITTY OR NOT, I HAVEN'T SEEN IT BUT EITHER WAY IT WAS THE NUMER ONE MOVIE IN CANADA LAST WEEK AND THE WEEK BEFORE?! WTF!
Where do you come up with these misleading comments? I Am Legend has a 60% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which means that the reviews are favorable…and this is particularly good for an action film. The other reviews are more mediocre than negative.
And while you may have a vendetta against Nicole Kidman, it's not fair to perpetually shun the Golden Compass (of which her character is merely a small part of, which if you were literate, you might realize). Unfortunately the film is doing poorly because of negative press from the religious right (who, in bad mouthing the film, you are inadvertently aligning yourself with) and an audience disconnect between those expecting a children's story and those who went to the theater understanding what the film truly is. Hate on Kidman all you want, but her performance as this particular character is dead on, and let's not forget….Katharine Hepburn was labeled as the original box office poison, too bad nobody told the future generations. I have to hand it to her, she's far from my favorite person, but Kidman's one of the only actresses who goes for the projects that she seems most interested in, not the sure things. She was bold enough to take on 'Birth', 'Fur', and 'Dogville' which (while shunned) have gained some real respect in intellectual circles.
I admire this guy for his intelligence, his people skills, witty, he's interesting and a good talker. This guy is surpassing his buddy tommie criuser. i will be seeing this movie, have heard nothing but good reviews for this movie. Looks like Oscar time for this guy.

Great flick. For those who think its not like the book, think again (and I mean think). Will is the monster. Hunting deer in NYC just like the Dark Seakers hunt blood. Will kidnaps them and does experiments on them like a Nazi, saying they have no human qualities. Dozens if not hundreds have falling to his experiments, with photos showing it was in agony. Well, they have at least one…revenge. The Dark Seakers don't care if he found a cure, they want his head. They orgnize, try to trap Will, track him, and go after him, just like a human. Sappy ending but 99% great. And Manhattan ver looked so good.

The Golden Compass is AWESOME! I sae it last night and absolutely loved it! This whole Atheist nonsense is closed minded and stupid. There is some symbolism between the bad characters and the catholic church, I guess, but as a christian and a person who is open-minded and curious, as well as likes creative movies, I LOVED IT! Also I don't think the author was athiest, just questioned certain thinks and asks questions and searches for truth. That is a great thing! Oh and I am Legend looks great too!
went to see "i am legend" (also golden compass, as a fan of the book from a child, very disappointed in it. kidman was not nearly evil enough) i am legend was fucking HORRIBLE. i wanted to leave. i was totally traumatized. no, i'm not 12, i'm 20, and the dog dying was unnecessarily upsetting.
