The pair lasted 11 years, which in Hollywood rarely happens.
No details are known about the split. She probably just got fed up with the crazy.

As many people astutely pointed out on this blog, Sean Penn is KNOWN to have cheated on both of his wives, constantly. Madonna gave an interview years ago, just after his marriage to Robin Wright, where she basically stated "Sean couldn't give up the girls." From what I have seen of this man, he is a chain-smoking, abusive alcoholic with severe anger management problems. To give him some credit, he is an intelligent man and a hell of an actor. However, she knew what she was getting into, because he was cheating on her before they married. He was screwing around on her while she was pregnant with his kid! No matter how sorry people try to feel for her, I say that she has enabled him to treat her like crap, and accepted his behavior without leaving his sorry ass and showing him that she is worthy of respect. How a beautiful, intelligent woman like that can have such low self esteem is beyond belief. She is truly the "Jenny" character she portrayed in Forrest Gump. I wonder what finally pushed her over the edge?
How do you people know what went on in this marriage? How do you know it was a case of abuse and/or cheating. Trust me Robin is no wallflower. She did not sit at home while her husband was out doing whatever he wanted. SHE was doing whatever she wanted too. Now I guess she wants to do whatever she wants without the burden of being his wife.
They both look used up and haggard. That's what years of abusing–and letting yourself be abused–will do. Very sad. I just hope the kids are ok.
