Spears is currently under psychiatric evaluation and on suicide watch.

So sad. It's obvious that she needs help. And those poor babies. My heart breaks for her because it's obvious she's not just crying for attention. I hope she gets she help she needs before those boys lose their mama forever.
I knew it was only a matter of time….I really hope she gets the help she needs to get better, which of coarse is possible. I also could'nt imagine having your whole life being recorded for the entire world to see, I feel so sorry for her!
Perez, I have read your blog for the last year or so, and have always enjoyed keeping up with the light, fun entertainment gossip. I am not nor have ever been a Britney Spears fan, however, the last few months I have had some objections with your posts on her. I have never posted anything here myself until now. Obviously she is very troubled. If you believe the US Weekly story, her grandmother had suffered from mental illness, and mental illness is a hereditary trait. Britney very well may not have been on drugs last night and may be suffering a psychotic episode. You have posted 'shame' on her pictures. You are prolonging the attitude that mental illness is a shameful disease. I don't think you would appreciate the same comments about homosexuality, which is also something you are born with. Britney is very sick and hopefully she will get committed after this event, somethign that no one was able to do before. In California, anyone of adult age cannot be committed by their parents, the next of kin would have to have her committed and that would be her children. Now she is where she needs to be. I don't think it's appropriate to make sarcastic remarks or draw devil horns on someone who is ill.
Well I hope she gets better, those pictures of her on the gurney are so sad. I hope she gets the help she desperately needs in the hospital. Maybe some psychiatric help is all she needs.

A psychiatrist can extend the 72 hour hold (5150) to 14 days based on the symptoms they present when being evaluated… it's called a 5250. And it's also involuntary. So basically you have to be pretty effed up when the doctor sees you… and the evaluation has to be made within 72 hours or you have to be released. WOW! Not like I didnt see this coming but I never thought it would go down like this…

It may be only 72 hours if she has not HARMED herself or anyone else. I am beginning to think she harmed, threatened to harm, etc., herself and/or her children. If a person seems to be a threat to themselves or others they can and will hold them longer, even if nothing criminal has happened. I am sure a psychologist or a psychiatrist has already seen her.

I work in the mental health field.
I can tell you that this girl will be held for sometime if it's determined that she has a mental illness, which very well could have been brought on by drugs.
She will not be discharged until she is stable and that could be a long time.
This is defined by how well she responds for treatment, whether or not she takes responsibility for her actions and illness as well as is able to care for herself.
I don't like her, but I will be praying for her and her family.
I think it's a sad shame that "friends" of hers aren't talking her into some treatment for herself and her kids.

I love Brit, but this NEEDED to happen. I was thinking just last night what it would take to have her committed against her will. It appears to me that she is a very sick woman and she needs some long term mental assistance. This may actually be a blessing in disguise. I sincerely hope that this will be the turning point for her and she'll start to get back on track. I WANT to like her again.

This includes danger to self, danger to others together with some indication, prior to the administering of the hold, of symptoms of a mental disorder, and/or grave disability—as noted below. The conditions must exist under the context of a mental illness and the person must be refusing psychiatric treatment.
Danger to self: The person must be an immediate threat to themselves, usually by being suicidal. Someone who is severely depressed and wishes to die would fall under this category.
Danger to others: The person must be an immediate threat to someone else. A person hearing voices telling to kill someone, having anger management issues, and/or any unusual obsession or behavior with others would fall under this category.

I'm getting really tired of hearing "Poor Britney". This girl has been spoiled her whole life. Her "breakdown" is self-inflicted. Britney has made bad choices in her life, and we (the public that read and follow her in the headlines) enable her behaviour.
She is not talented. Never has been. Her career is sinking fast. Secondly, she is an attention craver. She could easily avoid the paparazzi if she REALLY wanted to. Many celebrities manage to remain out of the limelight when they have to. So, Britney, cry me a river about how they follow you all the time. Move to somewhere less high-profile. You're rich and can afford it.
Now…about her kids. Clearly she doesn't want them. A real loving mother would fight tooth and nail to keep custody of her children, and Britney has demonstrated that she a) thinks she is above the law b) has been lax about legal proceedings and her behaviour while with the children, and c) doesn't really care about them. I really hope those children don't grow up to be like her. That would be a shame. She has been given more than enough chances to get her act together. It's time to face the music Britney and behave like a responsible mother. Should she happen to off herself, well, I won't be shedding any tears. She's a stupid girl. Really.

Well, Mr. Compassion, try organic mental illness, abetted by drug intake (which I'm sure you've never done), not getting proper treatment and support from family, feeling all alone even when surrounded by people, and see where you go. I've had depression problems, and I too have pride and pulled myself up, but there were times that I was just off-the-wall full-bore goose loony. It isn't always as black and white as you think it is. Consider her life path while you're at it. Certainly not a normal one and controlled a lot by others. I don't particularly care for her as a person either, but I do empathize with her problem. And Perez, I agree with others, cool it with the horns and cum drops and other denigrating cartoon crap. Im a psychiatric professional. Its too early to place her on a 14 day hold. They first put her on a 72 hour hold. If after 72 hours she is a danger to self, danger to others, or gravely disabled, they would then place her on a 14 day hold. She has the right to fight this 14 day hold. In short, its impossible they had already put her on a 14 day hold less than 24 after hospitalization.

Re: me – You can be on a legal 72 hour hold, however the doctor can get you to agree that you will make a committment to stay longer or they will do another emergency hold if you back out of your promise. As the psychiatric Clinician who has teamed with the Psychiatrist in MANY involuntary committment proceedings, we frequently got patients to agree to hospitalization so they would not have to go through the court hearings, however we could also choose to do an involuntary committment at any time if the patient decided to leave against medical advice. In my state the probate court judge heard the facts from the doctor and the clinician to decide to continue the involuntary committment. Maybe they presented to the judge already in Britney's case. She needs to be on regular medication, and needs to be in a less chaotic setting in order to get well. Sure she likes the attention of the paparazzi, until that small pivitol point where it becomes chaos, and then she snaps. But she has no judgement when she is this ill to decide what is best for her or her children. This time was a big snap. She needs someone who she can trust, but not manipulate to help her keep on track. I hope her Dad will be that person.

I'm not a Britney fan but this is something that should not be laughed about. I feel really sorry for her.
I work in a psych hospital in California and there's some misinformation here. First off, the initial legal hold is for 72 hours. It can only be if patient is danger to self, danger to others, or gravely disabled (can't provide for food clothing shelter). At the end of 72 hours the patient will either sign in voluntarily, or be discharged, or if still meets criteria, can then be put on a 14 day hold. Within the next 4 days there's a hearing at the hospital to decide if the doctors' opinion that she meets the criteria meets legal criteria. If the Certification Review Hearing Officer decides she doesn't meet criteria then she's discharged. If the 14 day hold is upheld, then she can stay for up to 14 days but can be discharged by the doc before the end of 14 day hold.
Note: her family has no power to have her hospitalized or kept in the hospital. It's up to the doctors and the court. Also, just because she's in the hospital they can't force her to take medication. They can only give her meds against her will under two circumstances: 1) emergency (if she's trying to harm herself or someone else) or if she's had a Reiss Hearing at the hospital.

i think, being within the psychiatric field, that it is hardly surprising that someone who has been pushed to perform from the age of 3 years old, having been scutinised since that age, having little to no actual education or the change for actual normal emotional and social development, that someone is going to develop an odd sense of reality. Coupled with the fact that she cant maintain relationships, especially seince Mr Federline only seemed interested in her money (all evidence points to it, despite him acting consciously about his children!). The children are the only constant she has, the only surety of love, everything else is superficial, and she knows this. If she is using, it is simlpy to escape the reality of being hounded by the press at every corner. she knows she looks a state and looks dead in the eyes. I think she has a culmination and a plethora of mental issues, including, attention deficit, depression (post natal also), fears of rejection, abandonment and so on, coupled with some supporting evidence of a eating disorder. ok. I am not a die hard britney fan i don't even own a single one of her cd's. But I am a mom. My heart goes out to her. the press–and even perez hilton here–are all quick to judge. I think brits been used and abused and realized she was going to lose her kids partly because of her inability to see the severity of the courts rules and partly because we all forget that K-fed is a good manipulator–knows when to act like a saint–I know I would have a mental breakdown if some loser used me, then acted saintly long enought to steal the kids away from me. my babies are my life. any mom who sees her kids getting stripped away would lose it….have a little sympathy here and lets hope brit brit has hit her rock bottom and gets back on track. i am secretly rooting for her to pull through all of this craziness

I hope she recovers from this. As a mom myself I can't image not being with my kids. They deserve a loving responsible stable mother. Regardless of how I feel about her, her children will live with the outcome of all of this. IMHO she is most certaintly suffering from a major mental illness and looks like she's self medicating with drugs and/or alcohol. I wish you the Best Britney… please accept the help you're offered.
Its all of our faults. Look how we all thirst for drama. Britney is an icon of our own creation. She is exactly what we want the media to see her as. Its unfortunate she allowed us to take control over her life. It takes a very strong person to handle the public and paparazzi always in her face. Think about it. i also work in the mental health field. Britney has a severe mental illness that has been manafesting for some time. Before she married K-Fed his brother mentioned some possible mental health issues. Since her blood work is coming back negative for drugs she could have either:
Bipolar Disorder Mixed with Psychotic features, Schizoaffective Disorder, Drug Induced Psychosis from some drug someone could have given her. Post Partum Depression or Psychosis including hormone imbalances from having those kids so close together .At any rate she had some sort of break..Let the professionals evaluate her and diagnosis..if you love her or hate her..she has a mental illness and will need to be on some very serious medications and monitoring for the rest of her life to stablize her mood and behavior.
