Taking into account the times under which her grandfather grew up and the society he had to deal with, it is not surprising that he did not want his family to be discriminated against as he was. Unfortunately, that was the reality of the times. I have a lot of friends whose parents and grandparents never taught them spanish. hell, most third and fourth generation mexican-americans don't know spanish correctly…maybe a few words here and there.

ethnic and racial identities are so difficult to figure out, especially in american culture. people of every race are faced with outright discrimination and bigotry but are also encouraged by others to be proud of their heritage: the very thing that can cause pain and insecurity, especially in children and adolescents. even when people are spared the cruel side of discrimination they still are constantly encountering stereotypes, both positive and negative.

My last name is hispanic; my dad's side of the family is hispanic, but my mother is white. Because of the pressures of assimilation back then, and my mother not being able to speak spanish, my siblings and I were not raised to speak spanish. I too feel as if I don't belong in that culture….My friends used to say the only thing hispanic about me is my last name. I think that it's wonderful that you–PEREZ–and other people–feel ties to your ethnic roots. That is wonderful. But not everyone has the same thing going on in their families and not everyone was raised with an appreciation or closeness to where they are from. I grew up in an English-only speaking family, and consequently I don't feel any ties to any other culture. Sometimes I wish that I could identify with a certain culture besides just being an American, and I wish that I spoke 2 languages fluently, but I got what I got from my parents and that's just the way that it is. I know it might be hard for the rest of you to understand b/c of how you were raised, but try to be a little bit more understanding when people explain that it just wasn't there in their family. Not having a culture to identify with can be an empty feeling, especially when pretty much everybody is off tooting some flag or celebrating some day or whatever. Quit dogging on Jessica for being honest about it when it's not her fault.
Jessica Alba has not said or done anything inappropriate. Rather, she simply spoke her mind and told the truth. Why pose as somebody who is only a faint part of your history? I think she's being genuine and actually is much more admirable than most celebrities for her candour.
I have to join the "I don't get it" bandwagon. The first comment of hers is the only one I see that could be construed as offensive; otherwise, she's just saying that she's AMERICAN. Just like the rest of us. I don't look at her and see a Latina person, I look at her and see a PERSON.
What's the problem, she's being honest. Her families been here for generations and didn't teach her anything. If you want to be mad at anyone, be mad at her great-grandfather…dig him up and chastise him. Her family has assimilated…get over it!

Usually people regret if they had the chance to grow up bilingual but didn't learn a second language. It seems to be an American phenomenon that people don't want to speak a foreign language (North: English only; South: Spanish only). In European schools it's compulsary to learn a foreign language. One is the minimum.
