I don't know why you're making her out to be ashamed of who she is. She's merely stating her truth. If she were 3rd Irish/English/German/Russian/etc., NO ONE would get on her case for not being like or speaking the language of her ancestors. When is okay for a Latino or black person to be AMERICAN? A black American with no experience or direct ties to Africa, the hood or the "ghetto" gets the same treatment. Rethink your opinions and ask yourself, "Am I no different than the racists people who do the EXACT SAME THING?"
My father is Italian, my mom is French. My grandmother had some Belgian somewhere. I barely speak Italian, I speak some French. I don't deny my heritage (which is one thing) but under NO circumstances do I call myself Italian or French. I wasn't born there, I've visited each place once in my life. Calling myself Italian is an insult to Italians. I say I have Italian heritage, period. Jessica Alba doesn't want people to call her Latina because *she isn't Latina* - she has latin heritage. Calling herself Latina would be an insult to those who truly are. Hell, if she would call herself Latina, you wold probably hate on her even more for cvalling herself that and not even speaking Spanish. Re: Ileana C – I commend you for your point of view but seriously. This country the U.S.A. was establishe by people from England that spoke English. This country that gives these freedoms and opportunities that so many people come here to seek and take advantage of was estabished, an built by people that spoke English. It may not be in the constitution but English is our language. English is this countrys language. To come here and not learn it, to not speak it where it has been spoken in the majority of the country for the past 232 years is disrespectful. I really do not see the issue here AT ALL. Both of her parents ARE Americans. So why does she need to go around saying im LATINO. First and foremost she is an American, so why hate her for admitting what she truly is, an American. She's not denying her culture, she wants to be known for her acting not her ethnicity. I am the second generation of immigrant parents. I speak spanish FLUENTLY, love my latin food, music & men! I have children of my own and they know spanish well also. I have studied my Latin history and appreciate my culture. I know the struggles & hardships my parents when through before they came here. That knowledge alone helps me appreciate my Latin roots more than ever.
This girl needs to go back to her grandfather's old Mexican village and live there for a year. She will soon learn that "passing white" won't get you ever far. That might work in Hollywood but not in any true Latin neighborhood.

As a Latina myself, I see nothing wrong with what she said. I've had some of the same feelings growing up. She is opening up about her childhood and the fact that in America if you look like Cameron D. you are placed into the 'white' box. Perez What do you feel is wrong with what she said?

First, I'd like to know where all these people who claim not to identify with their ethnicity are coming from. Most of the people I've ever me have managed to make sure I knew that they were Irish, Swedish, Italian or whatever. It's not true that people do not identify, and strongly, with their family's roots. Millions of people who are of European descent celebrate their heritage in festivals every year. Secondly, American is not an ethnicity for anyone who immigrated to this country; it is the nationality of those who are citizens of a country on the North or South American continents. It is obvious to anyone who looks at me that my family must have originated in Europe. My family's immigration to this country does not obliterate the fact that we are German. American Indians are the natives; everyone else came from somewhere else. You are what you are no matter how many years your family has been in this country, whether latino, chinese or anything else. It's baloney that everyone here is the same just because we live in the same country.

She should read about Nicole Scherzinger and Vanessa Hudgens, those girls have said that they feel very proud of her ancestors. Plus they are so beautiful, a perfect combination. I thought they were latinas. And Alba should learn of Jennifer Lopez, that's a proud latina.
In Europe they learn how to speak more than one language; since elementary school. We should learn that!
Jessica should understand there is a difference between race and culture.
Race: latina, african american, arabic etc.
Culture: Mexican traditions, French traditions etc.
Latina or Mexican American is a race, not religion or culture.

im hispanic too and i can relate to what alba says. many latinos even speak with fake accents in order to promote a fake feeling of pride. thats bull. many latino groups do not like other races and force the unity game on us. they dont want us to speak for ourselves. look at corrupt latino leaders who force the race game: Nunez, Delgadillo, Villar, etc. i do not harp about the race that i am labeled to be. i take pride in my accomplishments, such as my Phd.

What her grandfather struggled with in regards to his identity was very common at one time in this country's history. It happened to those of European ancestory as well. My grandma forbade my grandther from speaking German. He forgot, but it was embarrassing to them at one time. Many Jews came over here after World War II and converted to Christianity.
