i definitely think her thoughts are a product of her upbringing if her parents didnt make her so aware of how different they were and that they needed to try to conform as much as possible her thoughts on her heritage wouldbe different, it definitely seems like they were trying to supress that though while she was growing up.
Perez, you need to let it go. She was being honest and I don't see anything wrong with what she said. I think she would be super fake if she did walk around claiming to be super Latina when like she said, she was raised here and doesn't even speak spanish. After seeing the negative of effect of education in California, because the mexican kids do not speak a lick of English because of the parents not bother to learn the language of their adopted country, the kids education suffers for even those who speak english. Right, as someone previously stated, the actress Rosaio Dawson is part Indian, Black and Cuban I think, at least that's what I read in a magazine. She never said anything about being Latin. Since most Cubans I know don't refer to themselves as Latin, they simple say Cuban and leave it at that.
Whatever, this doesn't change the fact that's she's like an empty shell with no substance.
I am half-Mexican (father) and half-German (mother). I completely understand and support Ms. Alba's right to place her heritage in context FOR HERSELF! As long as she realizes that her feelings apppy only to herself, and as long as she does not condemn others who feel differently, I say "more power to her".
Besides, I admire Ms. Alba because she is one of the very few in Hollywood whe speaks out about things that many others want to keep hidden away - such as Zac Efron's obvious homosexuality…..

I don't like her either. However, all I see is that she grew up not identifying herself with either race and just thinking herself as American. For that reason, it would be "insincere" (which I agree with) for her to pimp out her Latin roots for her fame if she never used them before. It's a personal choice. There is nothing wrong with this as long as she is not ashamed of her bloodlines and isn't racist towards them. People are so wanting to cling to a race and be like, "I'm this what are you?" Sounds to me like she is just being honest. My grandparents were born in Italy, but my mother was never taught Italian because they had the mindset "We are Americans now, we speak English" It was the way is was back then. Being different in that generation was not tolerated. So immigrants did whatever they could to fit in, including giving up traditions and heritage. Sounds like Jessica was deprived of her heritage, not denying it.
Her priorities in life and what she thinks is good and bad are sooooo fucked up.
She's just ignorant of her roots, which is sad. She should become educated about her heritage! WE people of color should all be PROUD of what we are…no matter what color that is. We should know about our history and our heritage. YES we all live within American culture, but to turn ones back on heritage is a sad thing. Someday I hope she embraces her beautiful heritage, if only to learn about it some more for the sake of the child she is bringing into this world.

these comments are very sad. We need to address where she says that she has never felt accepted by _any_ race. People want to jump down her throat for trying to distance herself from her community, while not addressing that it was this same community that didn't accept her when she was growing up.
I am not trying to justify her statements. I wish more people of color could just feel free to be themselves while at the same time being proud of their group identity. I also think that we need to show some compassion.

it happened to me too…my dad married a white woman and never spoke spanish in my house. i learned spanish in school but have never been accepted by other latinas because Im not a native speaker. when your mixed its hard to figure out what to say you are. seems like jessica really feels no connection to her culture and thats because of her family, doesnt seem like her fault…but she does seem a little dumb, i must admit.

I don't understand why this is a huge deal. She identifies with being an American because that's who she is. She doesn't identify with Latin cultures because she was raised as an American. Get over it, you fat fucking Mexican freak.

She doesn't have to flaunt her Latin heritage if she doesn't want to. This is America, not Mexico. I find it rather rude when people flaunt their heritage and tell everyone what they are.
For me, she is not a latina. She doesn't even speaks spanish! BUT I feel sorry for her grandpa. First off, kiddies…there are only 4 RACES, white, black, asian, and indiginous (ie. Natives). Mexican, Spanish, Chinese, German etc…are nationalities. If you were born in America, you're American. If you were born in Mexico, you're Mexican. Someone classified as "hispanic" or "latin" can be of any of those four races. I am of Spanish, English, and Native American heritage, but, seeing I was born in the U.S., as were my parents, I am an American. Yes, I speak Spanish, semi-fluently, but my first language was English. And having grown up in a Southwest border town, those of us American born "hispanics" are treated horribly by those south of the Border. Why? It is not our fault that our families immigrated to the U.S., legally. I am not going to cater to them. They won't cater to me! BUT don't get me wrong…I still retain much of the "hispanic" culture and feel it's important to pass on to future generations of my family.
But getting back to Jessica, the fact is, she is "latina." Unfortunately she's ashamed of it, but she should really keep that to herself because that only perpetuates the racism, even though going by the 4 RACES, she is considered white. "BROWN" is not in there and those who call others or claim to be "brown" are just as ignorant as any other racist.

I am 1/2 Puerto Rican, 1/4 Hungarian, 1/8 Austrian & 1/8 German. None of my great-grandparents were born in the US. (Of my Puerto Rican side, it goes back maybe one generation and then on back to Spain, France and Italy). I speak only English.
If I say I am American, am I denying my "true" heritage? (Tell me what is my true heritage?) Would the people of those countries I did claim, claim me as one of their own? I don't think so. Get a grip people. The only TRUE Americans were Native Americans at one time. It's different now. She is AMERICAN! If she was blonde (like she said), none of you would be on here giving her a hard time about it. It is only a stereotype that all Latinas have dark hair and dark eyes. People are trying to make her who she is based soley on her looks. I have two cousins that are sisters that one is dark hair and dark eyes and dark complexion and her sister is blonde, blue eyed and fair skinned. Neither speak Spanish, but by what you people are saying the dark hair sister needs to be "Latina" and the other could be "white American". -Whatever! She is not "denying" anything, she was just trying to be honest.
first of all i understand her i grew up in LA..im blonde and latina the spanish kids wouldnt talk to me the white kids either..it was horrible..but i love my culture my son is blond with blue eyes and speaks perfect spanish..people are still very ignorant they always ask me how i can look like this and be spanish… hello doesnt anyone pay attention in hx class..she is bitter though its insulting that alot of latinos dont teach the new generation spanish or anything about their culture..i love what i am and who i am my son wil also..he has to be proud of his roots…
