I don't see a problem, either. She has not ignored or blown off her heritage, and has not said ANYTHING wrong in any of the quotes I saw posted here. She has grown up during a time when people are encouraged to realize that we ARE (many of us) a second or third generation of "Americans," so what is wrong with everyone just being that?? Furthermore, it almost seems like an insult to ME from the Latin community, because you are in essence saying that you are different or better than being "just an American" — you want people to DEFINITELY KNOW if you have a single bit of Latina blood. Who the hell cares? We ALL have MANY different pieces of places and history and such all enmeshed in ourselves — why not just KNOW that about each other, and accept the fact that we are, whether you want to like it or if you do not, AMERICANS together. If you were born here especially, you are no LESS PROUD of who CREATED your existence by admitting to being an American. The only downside to admitting that is that, these days, it means so much less and less — and you only prove my point by not accepting that. I am half latina and half white as well, and I think it's a shame that she feels this way about her Mexican heritage. In my opinion, she should embrace it to the fullest as well as her other heritages. Though I agree that she has used her ethnicity to get into certain genres of the business and shouldn't do that if she can't see herself as Latina I also have to say that she's very right in many of things she says. Living in Miami I come across so many people that scream and shout abut how they are Hispanic and how proud they are but at the end of the day they don't even know how to speak Spanish or can't name one singer that doesn't sing Reggaeton. If you're so proud to be Hispanic then why don't you put some effort and at least learn the language. Pride comes from the knowledge you have and not the customs you see other people following. I personally would dislike her more for preaching about something she knows nothing about than her saying she doesn't embrace the Hispanic heritage because it truly isn't part of her life. A skin color, a last name, and the background of your ancestors doesn't define who you are unless you can defend the heritage you are claiming to have with proof of knowledge. As a Hispanic we're all part of some African decent. I would never say I'm African though because not only do I NOT know the language but I also know nothing about the country other than what I may hear on the news. When my dad came to America he was the same way and didn't teach me spanish…he regrets it now, but it doesn't mean she is a bad person. All she's saying is that she grew up in a family that was more assimilationist than some, so she doesn't feel that much of a connection to her heritage. This is what immigrants used to do- they tried to fit in as Americans, and they didn't teach their children that much about their language or culture. I'm not saying that's a great thing, but that's the way it was, and it's not Jessica Alba's fault that she's a product of that. My family was very similar- my great-grandparents didn't teach their kids their native language, and they gave them names that sounded "American," because they hoped it would help them get along better as Americans. It's exceedingly common, and Jessica (whom I am not a fan of at all, BTW) is just expressing that truth. It doesn't mean she hates Latinos or wants to be white, she's just being honest about her own sense of her identity. It's better than certain celebrities (ahem, Michael Jackson) who denies his heritage by bleaching his skin (or whatever he did to it) and asserts his identity as a black man only when it's convenient for him.

I'm from the Mediterranean part of Croatia, and to us, Mexicans are WHITE. I don't understand how Alngo-Saxons rate the white race, how white do you have to be white? Are Armenians white? Spanish paople have kida darker skin than Scandinavians for example, but I thought they were all white. The only time I realized that I wasn't white by some people's standards was in Australia where some people thought I was Persian.

I grew up in somewhat of a similar situation, and I have to say- SHAME is nothing to embrace or be proud of. She stands by her families shame for what their heritage is. American is not a race, it does not idenitify your family roots and history. Perhaps if Jessica took the time to research her family heritage she would learn to appreciate her brown skin and dark eyes. After all, her success is based upon her looks, certainly not her talent… it's in the genes- and if she's knocked up, she's passing it on. My race is Asian and so what? I am American and united we stand…that's what I was taught in grade school. I was the only Asian girl in the classroom and I didn't grow up with other races other black and white. I have a beautiful daughter now that is multiracial and is just as gorgeous as jessica alba. She's sweet, she's smart, she's worldly and she is respectible to other culture, race, religion, etc. I hope when she's an adult this part of the world will become one happy country. Bless.
