Many people who are of a mixed race makes comments about the insecurity while growing up and maybe feeling a little out of place, its totally natural, when she first came on the scene with 'Dark Angel' everywhere I went, people would tell me omg you look like that girl, I started reading interviews of her, and I thought it was really cool that she was open and honest about her insecurities, I could totally identify with her and she made me feel better about myself.
If you dont understand what she means, consider yourself lucky that you do not feel defensive or insecure about yourself.

I raised my children to speak only english.. but my hubby and I spoke spanish when we were with relatives…Reason being is that we lived in a primarily Italian neighborhood and asian nieghbors…so we know being born in america..english is the primary language…but my kids did choose spanish in school to learn and we get a few sentences in. I had to relearn myself to be able to speak to my inlaws… but never once did my kids ever exclaim to be ashamed of their heritage whether ii was American or Hispanic..
There are prejudices you deal with every day.. you can go hating yourself for it.. Accept who you are and you will become very well rounded in life..

1.- She is latina, I am sorry but she is. I was born in Venezuela. But my race is white I am 100% european so my race is not black , indian, chinese or else. People from Venezuela know that I have heritage from somewhere else in the minute they see me (so I have been told). Since I grew up in Venezuela I definetely have the venezuelan (latin american) ethnicity.
2.- No one should be ashamed of his/her race in todays globalized world. She should take advantage of her race to attract fans from a not-such a minority.
3.- I can live overseas for many years and feel myself American, it's just a lifestyle… Anthropologists say that if you watch a culture close enough you can get to be part of it. We humans get used to anything in the long run.
4.- Cameron Diaz' race is white (concidentially, the majority in the us). Her ethnicity might be latin if she embraces it.
From my point of view, Jessica's comments were very ignorant for a young person. She has no need to deny her race, no matter what she says she looks latin, I even though she was black. I can take it from her grandfather, who lived the harsh reality of racism in a no globalized world.

1. She uses many examples of her family to explain why she doesnt consider herself Latina. Her examples are all forms of self hate, her grandfather and her father and her family hated that they came from a spanish speaking country.
2.She is not Latina in the traditional sense, she holds no traditional cultural similarities to the Latin community.
3. Her dislike of the Spanish languange and anything Latin is evident, since she discusses why she doesnt consider herself Latin.
4. She is not Latin she happens to have been born to a family that hates where their ancestors came from. She wishes she was white, because that is how she feels.

About 3 years ago, I was doing some extra work here in Toronto. One summer, I did some work on about 6 different sets, and at each set, ALL of the extras were talking about what a WITCH Jessica is. I never worked with her myself, but I would have liked to, just to see her iciness in action. One extra told me Jessica was even nasty to the children she worked with, openly talked about how much she didn't like working with them and refused to sign autographs for the children she was working with (not like she was being accosted on the street or anything).

Perhaps Alba had a problematic childhood and was the target or racism & discrimination because of her race/backrgound, and I understand were she's coming from because I have felt that too.
