A Little History Lesson

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Latinolicious > Jessica Alba

jpi_072007rss_jalba51682__opt.jpg

People often ask, "Why do you dislike Jessica "Don't Call Me Latina" Alba so much?"

We'll let her words speak for themselves.

Here are just a few choice quotes from Alba.

She says:

"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."

"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

"My grandfather was the only one in our family to go to college. He made a choice not to speak Spanish in the house. He didn't want his kids to be different."

"[Before] I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."

"My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, … So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere."

"Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde."

Um..she is part white, so if she denied that and saod how latina she was, she would be just as much of a hyprocrite. She didnt say she hates latin people or her latin culture, she said she feels american. This is the dumbest argument to make against someone. I give her credit for not using her backroud to her advantag like some people do. I say find osmething else to get on her about cuz this is stupid and you look retarted if you agree witht his shit….seriously read it and look at what shes saying…its nit bad people!

i hate this stupid girl.. it doesnt matter if she was born here or not, she should atleast acknowledge her background and try to learn more about it instead of trying to act like a little white girl!

    1907

Re: BIOLOGY 101 – so, because I generalized, that makes me a lunatic…okaaaay….Not everyone takes the time to delve into the complexities of the human existence, hence the reason we have all these racial issues. People in this country see black, white, yellow, red (oh, and don't forget brown) and that's all their blinders allow. So, read your audience here and see that the bickering is not between scientists but people who come to the site for entertainment and silly rantings. Geez!!!

  8. jim says – reply to this

    1908

I don't see anything wrong with what she said. She was born here. My great grandparents are scottish and when people ask me what I am I say "American." Where you are born and what your roots are are 2 different things. Why are latin people so obsessed with this? Nobody really cares what you are, and trying to shove that down our throat won't make us care anymore- it just makes us sick of you.

this fucking cunt… i truly have alwasy appreciated jessica's beauty, she is acting like an ass hoole, every woman is envious of latias, we are beautiful , intelligent, strong woman adn for her to decide she wants to hide the fact she's latin: bitch sucks.

    1910

I don't understand what the problem is! So if someone is half white and half black, do you get upset if they only identify with one race? So her grandparents are Mexican, she's obviously very assimilated, she doesn't identify with her Mexican ancestry, so what? It's a personal choice. If she grew up without her family embracing the culture, why would she? Many of us have immigrant grandparents, I do too, but I don't identify with their culture and traditions because I've chosen for myself! It's stupid to put someone down for that. You can't force her to embrace her Mexican heritage, especially if her family doesn't even do that!

i wish she'd quit all her talk about this! big deal! i am 2nd generation yugoslavian and i don't go around yakking about it or try to get people to feel sorry for me because i'm "different", or scads of "my people" were oppressed by an insane dictator, or how difficult it was for my grandparents to adjust to life here , or whatever - geez, not a topic that I blab all over the place! i am an american too and a damn lucky one and am sick to death of hearing about these celebs "heritage" and whatever they feel about it - god!

    1913

Some advice for all of you Latins- quit with your bullshit and trying to shove your culture down our throats- eventually you'll all be hated because we're sick and tired of hearing about it. You're obnoxiously suffocating with all your latin root talk and pride. We don't care, we never have cared. So quit trying to convert us to your culture. You're worse than a Jesus freak trying to convert someone to Christianity. Oh, and calling all of us cracker or trailer trash doesn't help your case either. How do you expect us to respect you if you are all racist yourselves?

  14. jim says – reply to this

    1914

#1912- Why should she acknowledge her background? Just so people can say "That's nice- we really don't give a fuck?" I could give a rats ass where she came from. It's not going to change my daily routine. Also, how does one act like "A little white girl," or are you just ignorant? You know, contrary to what you bitches believe, white people have a culture too. You're just too wrapped up with this Jessica Alba thing to realize it. Get a life.

    1918

It's one thing to be proud of being an American but how can you dismiss your heritage? Some of the greatest entertainers of today are Mexican-American or of Latin descent but you never hear them put down their race. Salma Hayek, America Ferrara, Selena (Selena didn't know Spanish), J.Lo, & Gloria Estefan are all women of Latin descent who I am sure are proud to be American, but they also respect and embrace their heritage. If I were Latina, I wouldn't want this "B" actress representing me anyways. White people still think you are Latin, no matter how you spin it. They aren't going to say, "oh you know Jessica Alba, the American girl."

  19. LAKESHIA says – reply to this

    1919

I get what your saying…when your a minority (especially when you receive social status) you should 'consider'. yourself whatever your ancestors are. And if your your family so shamefully rejected and denied your ancestory you should not continue such stupid behavior because you will only hurt yourself and your child. All those saying they dont get it…dont get it because they have not experienced growing up experiencing people looking down on you..but you still knowing GOD made you too Its called PRIDE! and she obviously is lacking it if she is ashame of where she comes from and feel a need to explain why. I guess her goal is keep mixing races in the hope of her children no longer looki or appeari latina…But she looks Latina all day and until she embrace who she is……keep calling her Dont call me latina

  20. M says – reply to this

    1920

Oh and Perez…. you need to create a banner with her as the poster child seven months pregnant with the saying "Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out." What a great role model she will make for all the young Latinas? Oops! I mean Americans out there since she isn't Latin.

  21. Me says – reply to this

    1921

    WTF????

Because of it did she want to play the role of a blonde?

In order that they do not say to him LatinAmerican, the peroxide do I make she stupid?

  22. Liese says – reply to this

    1922

i'm sorry but i still don't get it. she doesn't feel latina because of how she grew up…only speaking english. i'm not latina myself but i had alot of hispanic friends growing up and the one's that couldn't speak spanish weren't even considered latino by the ones that did speak spanish. they might have been seen as latinos to us non-latin folks but to alot of ppl in their own race they weren't. so i can see why she wouldn't exactly connect with hispanic ppl now that she's an adult. i don't see why that would make you not like her.

  23. Liese says – reply to this

    1923

Re: LAKESHIA – just because she LOOKS like a latina doesn't mean she is one. from what i've been told being latin involves growing up in the culture and she didn't. its not her fault. her grandparents made the decision not bring their family up in the latin culture. so that 3 generations of a family that was brought up in the american society. how is she supposed to know about being latina if she didn't grow up in the culture and if the ppl that did rejected her because of it?

  24. Ivonia says – reply to this

    1924

I understand why she expressed herself in that manner, but what i fail to comprehend is the fact that she doesn't attempt to explore if you will, her Mexican heritage at the very least. Though i am a 6th generation American, i'm very much aware of my Latino roots which do trace back to countries like Spain (which is also very true for many other Latinos) as well as Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic… I think it's informative! And even though my family has been here for a long time now, i am proud to say that i am well versed in both languages whether it is in speaking, reading or writing them. But regardless of the matter, i always say i am American first because #1, that is what my passport indicates, and #2 I feel like an American. My point is this, just because her Abuelo did what he did does not give her the justification of feeling guilty about her Mexican lineage, she should embrace that fact at least damn it, it wouldn't make her less of an American.

P.s, Latin Cuisines, Latin Music & Dance Are the SHIT!!

  25. tds says – reply to this

  29. Danielle says – reply to this

Wow. What a stupid bitch, seriously.

I'm a pale ass Mexi-Rican (Mexican/Puerto Rican) and I'm damn proud of it. I embrace my heritage to it's fullest and I think it's so sad to see those who don't do the same, no matter what race they are.

I understand, she wasn't brought up to embrace her background, but that gives her no right to talk down on being a Latina. Now that she's an adult, she knows better and can't blame any others. Whether she likes it or not, she's a Latina…F O R E V E R…

I can relate. I am 1/2 Mexican and don't speak Spanish. Because my skin is not dark people do not believe I am part Mexican. I don't feel like I fit completely on either side, white or Hispanic.

  36. M says – reply to this

    1936

Obviously she has issues being Mexican otherwise the comments would not have to be justified over and over again through different media outlets (for that matter) that she is American. Come on people. You dont see anybody else justifying that they are American. We are all Americans (well most of us anyway), but we dont need to sit there and make a statement about it. Halle Berry is American. African-American for that matter, but you dont see her sitting there and stating over and over again just how American she is, nor do you see her stereotyping her race. Her father was African/African-American. Her single mother, who she was raised by, is white. I am about 90% sure she was raised as an American. She looks African-American and is part African-American and she is proud of it. She is a role model to young African/African-American men and women regardless if she understands or can identify with it, IT is what IT is and she embraces it.

  37. vivica says – reply to this

    1937

after reading this I lost the little respect I had for this bitch. She shouldn't be so ashamed of her heritage. There are so many actresses who are incredibly beautiful aswell as incredibly talented all of which who are of different ethnicities. Maybe if she embraced her heritage girls all over the country would identify with her and actually consider going to the shitty ass movies shes always in. To be American is having the ability to accept diversity among different types of people, not just being blonde and blue eyed.

    ps I love you Perez.

  38. GetOverYourselves says – reply to this

    1938

Geez people, get over yourselves! There's nothing wrong with being proud to be an American. This hyphen crap should go away as is! America stopped being the melting pot when that shit started. My ancestors are German, but I am an American. It's where I was raised, it's where I'm a citizen of, and I am proud to be it. Do you think people who are considered caucasion should have to introduce themselves as Irish-American, German-American, etc.? I never cared about Jessica Alba one way or another until I read that comment. Now I respect her. If you really want everyone to get along, STOP playing the race card and be proud to be in the country you're in. If you don't want to be an American, GET THE FUCK OUT!

  39. vivica says – reply to this

    1939

Ya its a good thing shes a proud american, im not saying that Im not a proud american myself i just think that she should grow some balls and accept who she is. In all of these comments shes bashing on her mexican roots when she should just realize that she will never be able to change her heritage so why not embrace it.

  40. karlitasan says – reply to this

    1940

Although the way she was brought up is beyond her control, the way she reacts to it is. In other words, I think it's ignorant for her to dismiss her roots– she may have been raised as an "American," but it's disappointing that her search for identity would stop there. I think it's her responsibilty to reconcile her family's past and her present– mainly because she is a public figure. She should be proud to be what she is– Mexican-American. When she is ready to represent, I'll be ready to respect her.

  41. melanie says – reply to this

  42. mstopquality says – reply to this

    1942

She comes across as being ashamed of her culture but I guess i can undersatand why. That's just the way she was brought up. Let's face it, old habits die hard. I guess so much time has passed by that she doesn't feel connected to her heritage. Now for the very first comment posted regarding her forever pregnat Mexican cousins, she need to be slapped!!!!!!! :) BY ALL OF THEM, 2 @ A TIME………

  43. Saara says – reply to this

    1943

I agree that it doesn't make her evil. She has a different background to you Perez and is proud of her roots in as far as she can feel them - her family have struggled and she is proud of what they have achieved - even if it is sad they had to divorce part of their own parents' culture to do so. That's life and that's the world right now. Get over it maybe? She is avoiding insincerity and following her heart - that's a good sign; at least she's got one. It would be easier in this age to flaunt her 'exotic' roots so she is being brave and honest.

  45. kimmy says – reply to this

    1945

I'm confused. Maybe I'm not reading the same statement. Where does she say that she is ashamed or embarrassed of her latin roots? The problem with you dumb asses on here, is that is all that you think about every second of your lives. You scope out racism, you breathe it, eat it, and drink it, and you're bitter. You have no life. Just because someone is not standing on a street corner shouting about how proud they are of their culture, doesn't mean they're not. Some people keep it to themselves. Not everyone runs their mouth. I'm Irish, but I was born in the United States. Am I supposed to pick up an Irish accent now? Why should she learn spanish if she is in America? Where will she use that? Also, why can only latins be proud of their culture and none of the rest of us can, otherwise we're racist? And you wonder why there is so much hatred against you. You're all idiots- it must suck to be that angry all the time.

-FIrst of all I dont think you have any proof to show that all americans are sick of mexicans or that thye hurt everybody, some people might be ignorant enough to to hurt others but is not only the mexicans.every ethnicity has their own black sheeps.second, even though their are a lot of teen pregnancies i can assure you is not only the mexicans, many other girls , whatever their race may be are getting pregnant young.I think that you are just focusing and attacking on a race for whatever personal reason you have. INstead of focusing on Mexicans as your point for hatred, go out and honestly study your factcs and realize that, not only do mexicans come to this country but other people from other parts of the world come here illegally and legally.Im not saying that you should focus your hatred on other cultutes but to stop hating specific cultures.Dont be ignorant and try to categorize a whole race by some poeple becuase if we all did that we would be in a depper destitution in our communications and globalization with others

Alba Hits back at Perez || Category: News
Posted on 12 Jan 2008 by mahdi

Jessica Alba is fuming over gossip blogger Perez Hilton's claims she is ashamed of her Latin heritage.

Hilton has targetted the Mexican-American actress on his website, dubbing her Jessica 'Don't call me Latina' Alba.

But the pregnant Sin City actress insists Hilton is picking on her because she wouldn't have her picture taken with him.

Alba says, "It was all because I wouldn't take photos with him at a nightclub. It would probably be smart for me to hang out and kiss up to what's his name, Perez.

"Of course I'm proud of my heritage. That's all I know. I only know a Mexican-American upbringing."

Kick that fat lard to the curb Jess.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what she is saying. She wants to be accepted as an actress and not typecast for her race. What is so wrong with that?

I hardly see Perez doing anything to promote his race proudly. As a Latina, I am ashamed to see how he perpetuates the flamboyantly gay, Cuban-American stereotype to the rest of the world.

    1958

It seems to me that she is trying desperately to put her self as the victim, by saying that no race ever accepted her. If she would just say I don't like my mexican culture, then thats fine, but she is trying to justify it. second, she is not hot at all, she is the most normal looking girl ever I don't see why you guys think she is soo fucking hot, she has no boobs, she has an alien looking face, ugly fat nose, and two separated eyes. Her bleached hair makes her look even more dark, not that dark is bad, but she is trying so hard to be white its pathetic. It's funny, being mexican, I do not care if she hates her culture, but she had to say it out loud and try to demean people of that culture. she is a truly pathetic whatever looking girl.

i think people should understand where her family comes from. years ago people werent as accepting as they are today. her parents didnt want to go through what they probably went through. i think anyone who hates her needs to brush up on their history and remember how hard it was for people of different races to be accepted into america. she grew up with her parents telling her shes american and anyone who lives in america is american. what ever happened to being proud of that.

People are just confused about what being something or someone means.
im a full blood mexican and happen to be a natural redhead, blue eyes and extremely white skin toned: should i feel out of place and unidentified with my race, my people, my country and unaccepted by all and any other races just because i dont fit with the what a latino "looks like"?
it's really sad to see this kind of attitude in people in general, not only artists, because in all true honesty (AS HER GRANDFATHER) shes ASHAMED of who she is and where she's come up from. shouldn't she be proud of all that stuff she said about her grandfather being "the only" in so many situations instead of saying they bowed their head down and felt out of place, blah blah blah?
i lived 9 years in the US and not once did i feel ashamed of speaking spanish or being latin. we should all be extremely proud of where we come from cuz its what's made each and everyone of us who we are!
    cheers!

I just read her mom is white, so she has a point she connected more to her white side of the family and her dad did not do anything good by being a coconut brown on the outside and white in the inside. Im not mad at her I have 2 nephews 1/2 white too and they do not look Mexican. But she sure does look Mexican and she was also born in a Mexican over populated cheesy city.

Quick!! Sign her up for a Chicano Studies class quick before she does any more damage!

I'll give her this much, at least she recognizes the fact that she was not turning red of embarrassment when her father said "I don't speak Mexican." She straight said she "turned purple." We all know 'white people' don't turn purple. lol.
