A Little History Lesson

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Latinolicious > Jessica Alba

jpi_072007rss_jalba51682__opt.jpg

People often ask, "Why do you dislike Jessica "Don't Call Me Latina" Alba so much?"

We'll let her words speak for themselves.

Here are just a few choice quotes from Alba.

She says:

"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."

"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

"My grandfather was the only one in our family to go to college. He made a choice not to speak Spanish in the house. He didn't want his kids to be different."

"[Before] I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."

"My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, … So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere."

"Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde."

This is a very common occurance in Mexican American families, as in many other immigrant families from all over the world. Parents would not and do not speak Spanish in the home in order to assimilate into the community. I'm sure there are a few different ways of looking at it. One might be that it's a shame that a rich heritage and culture are lost but that's usually the anglo perspective. I'm sure that for immigrant families their desire to fit in and to provide opportunities for their children override everything else. Again, it's quite common and you picking on Jessica Alba is sort of an insult to all of the parents who have done the same thing as her grandfather. It was her family's decision. She identifies as being American, that's all. Nico

She's right. Turn off Telemundo and learn the language. The Governator is right.

I agree with a lot of the other posts. I find nothing particularly offensive about her comments. All she is saying is that she does not feel particularly connected to her Mexican heritage because she has been raised in America her entire life. The way we see ourselves as individuals is a personal choice. She is not obligated, because of her skin color, to label herself as a latino woman.

What's the big deal if she wasn't brought up to speak Spanish or act Spanish? That makes her ashamed? What is wrong with you? Not everyone with a Spanish surname has to speak Spanish and act Spanish. If she was never brought up to embrace her Spanish roots then why should she? What's the problem? You're an idiot, always have been and always will be.

What's the problem Perez… she made a valid comment - she never said she was embarrassed by her heritage - just that she thought it was hypocritical to be called a Latin actress…

  11. lswrtr says – reply to this

    211

Although I sense a bit of shame about her roots (her grandfather was an a-hole) I think she's trying to say she just considers herself American and not someone apart. Generations of her family have lived here, and she is American. She says she's not ashamed of her darker coloring and Latin features. She maybe didn't say what she meant in a right way, but I don't think she is denying anything.

    215

What she is saying is true. Yes her heritage is Mexican, she looks Mexican, but she was not brought up as a Mexican. That's not her fault, it's her insecure Grandpas fault. There are many people in this country who are the children of immigrants who were never taught their heritage. Perez is just pissed beacause he wishes he was a Sexy Latina . I don't think Jessica is saying she is not Latina. She's saying she does not feel latina.

poor ignorant thing. she's racist against her own people..full circle because some idiot 'merican white boys gave her ancestors crap for crossing the border…go figure.

my parents tried to do the same crap to me - raised in an all white neighborhood and speaking only english…but i turned against it and EMBRACED my latin roots. mexicans can't stand me because i like to go to the beach and get a tan, white people call me "mexican" (i'm not even from central america).

fine, don't say you're mexican…but you can say that you are of spanish or mestizo descent! i'm proud to be mestizo, hoop earrings, j-lo figure, mad survival skills and a BRAIN to boot!

that's lame perez, are you one of those yesterday people who think that it's always important to make a reference to one's identitarian like national roots? mexicans fight for mexican rights, gays for gay rights and everyone else for whatever identity group they belong to? we all belong to one or the other minority. come on, this is a so has-been concept!!!!

  25. Nikki03 says – reply to this

    225

Personally, I don't think anything she said should be taking so offensively. She never claimed she isn't Latina; she simply claimed she indentifies herself more as an American, which is what she is by birth place. Her family did what many other families have had to do to assimilate into ANY culture. She never disgraced her hispanic heritage. Are you forgetting that she is ALSO American??

  26. Tigerlily says – reply to this

    226

I don't see anything wrong it any of her comments. Basically, she is saying that because she was not taught about her culture she feels no connection to it. She never felt accepted in either culture and she assimilated better with the mainstream or "American" culture.

What is so wrong with that??

Perez - I am a very proud Puerto Rican woman, but I am so because my culture (food, music and language) were very much a part of my upbringing. If this had not been the case, I can understand how the mainstream culture may have been a bigger influence.

Instead of being so angry with her direct that anger at her parents and grandparents - and at a society that was so un-accepting of other cultures. Come on, your smarter then that.

there is absoluetly nothing wrong with that comment

it's hard growing up in the US as a minority may it be spanish, chinese, korean whatever. certain communities, it's not that big of a deal, but i guess her grandfather grew up in a community where it was a great deal. he learned (the hard way) that being spanish was "bad" or as an "outcast".

in an ideal world, she should embrace her heritage.

    this world is not ideal.

everyone likes to think that we live in a racist-free world. we don't. it's great that some of you are idealistic, but don't bash on her for growing up the way she did. everyone's entitled to their opinion. she didn't just wake up and think, "oh i'm gonna hate being a latina." she has reason behind her opinion. and that's enough for everyone to respect it.

  52. ladylindsay says – reply to this

    252

I can understand what she is saying. I am white and Native American. Growing up biracial, it's hard to find where you fit in. But she's an adult now, she shouldn't really be worried about fitting in. She should try to embrace both cultures, and she really needs to stop putting her people down. If somebody sends her a script where she would be cast as Maria the office janitor, she should just throw it in the trash and stop bitching.

Like Devin, #3. I don't see the problem with these comments either. I'm Latino, and identify as such, speak spanish, whatever…. But I find her comments honest. Read her words Perez, she's not ashamed of being Latina. I mean, the girl is ethnically Latina but she grew up in a household that wanted to assimilate as much as they could to US culture. Its not her fault. She just thinks that calling herself a Latina Actress sounds insincere. She sounds like she's more Latin-American, than "Latina" to me.

My *mother* is from Mexico, and I don't consider myself latina. I've never been to my mother's country (and will never go) because it's not *my* country. I don't speak Spanish at all, and have no desire to do so. Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong with individuals choosing to identify with their roots. It's wonderful, and there are many, many beautiful cultures in Latin America. There's a lot to be proud about. Those of us who choose *not* to identify with those roots aren't wrong; we just make a different choice. The beauty of the country my mother decided to *leave* Mexico for is that we can make that choice. We're free to say "don't call me latina" or "I'm a proud latina" as we prefer. We're free to embrace our identities as US Americans and as Latin Americans to whatever degree we like. Jessica Alba is free to identify herself as she chooses. If you dislike that freedom, perhaps the USA is not where you'd like to be.

I think you're being harsh Perez. these quotes are all from interviews where things can be taken out of context. and at least her answers are sincere and honest (even if they make her look bad) in comparison to other actors' answers that come off as rehearsed, politically correct, and always the same. I dont think she's a bitch, I just think she answers questions without thinking about the outcome of her words. I am from an asian background but I dont speak Korean because both of my parents were born and raise here. YES, i do know that I look Korean and my great grandfather is Korean, but can I relate to the Korean culture? NO… is that my fault? NO…I can embrace my heritage as much as I can, but I view myself an American because its all I know…so I totally get where she's coming from and I dont think we should trash her for being honest. She could sit here and say "YES, i'm spanish..i speak the language, I know everything about the culture and my heritage" but then she'd be lying and we'd all be trashing her for THAT too.

  67. Sharon says – reply to this

    267

Perez, she is simply expressing how she feels. There is nothing wrong with what she said. Really……what is the problem? American or Latina……we love both. I'm sure it is hard if you don't feel like you fit in when you are young. I'm sure you have felt like you didn't fit in many many times. If you did there is nothing wrong with you for feeling that way. That is just how you felt at the time! Get it? You are acting to her like the people acted towards you when you felt like you didn't fit in. You know……I'm surprised you of all people don't understand how someone feels if they "feel" like they don't fit in. However, when we all become adults we have discovered who we are and are comfortable with it. Don't keep being the bully. You bring all those feelings back for her I'm sure. Everyone should be able to feel comfortable about who they are. Honestly, think about it.

  68. it's called an education, Alba says – reply to this

    268

I think she is very ineloquently describing how complex and confusing it can be to exist without totally being able to identify with one single ethnic background. That first quote of hers sure sucked, but unfortunately it's a typical by-product of a society filled with ignorant and uninformed people. She makes good points about the odd standards of ethnicity, but they come off as being snobby and arrogant. Ultimately, she should really contemplate her personal background issues more privately, because clearly she is NOT the authority on this.

Perez is a fucking hypocrite, why not go by your real name…or are you ashamed of something?

  72. cuter_than_perez says – reply to this

    272

I took a Mexican American Heritage Class, and what I learned that I didn't know already was that back in the 40's around those times, Mexicans just wanted to blend in beause discrimination was so bad. If it wasn't for the world war (2 i think) Mexicans would have never been accepted or be able to blend in as well.. for simply being "brown". I don't think alba knows this since she's probrably not interested in learning, which is fine becuase it's her choice, her decision, and NO she dosn't have to go "learn" her heritage. But this war might have impacted her life in more ways than she is aware, it impacted now and every other mexican American living in this country today and who consider themselves "accepted" by society. I honestly consider myself just latina, not hispanic or anything else. I use the term "Mexican American" but even that, Im not so sure, I was born here, I am first generation, but Ive only been to mexico once… there is no blood type that identifies your race, so who says I'm 'Mexican' to be Mexican you have to be born in Mexico, because Mexico is a country not a race. American is a country not a race, those referring to themselves as Americans in this country, that is what they are, Americans regardless of their color.

I don't get the problem either! Espicially with the first and last qoutes.. I can understand where someone can twist the others but I think its great that she says " I am American" more people who live in America should say the same thing! She is proud of exactly who she is and not hiding a thing!

The only ignorance out of this is coming from those that do not understand the reasons for assimilation or the feelings of not being accepted by any of the cultures as Alba has claimed. As a girl with a Mexican father and a white mother, i understand not being accepted and not referring to myself as latina. It is not shame, it is not ignorance, it is simply understanding myself and identifying myself as American. My father speaks Spanish, but did not speak it at home, so that we would not pick up accents like he had as a child, which often got him into a lot of unnecessary trouble in school and in his community, simply for being Mexican. You can't blame her grandfather for not wanting the same discriminations against his offspring that was put on him in his lifetime.

And whats wrong with what she said ? How is she supose to feel ? she was brought up with American way's (culture). She isnt going to feel any other way. They didn't speak spanish, or show her the latino ways (culture). I know what it's like to be the only latino in an all white community. They say your either black or white, I was treated like a black person when i was PUERTO RICAN. But my parents brought me up with the Puerto Rican culture, so I learn how to make cook, dance and speak spanish. So Perez give her a break. You don't like her so you twist her words so that you can trash her.

I didn't know Cameron Diaz was CUBAN and no one ever mentions it, because she looks white.

I can't stand Jessica Alba or Cameron Diaz.

People don't regularly call attention to Diaz's Cuban roots because she's had a mountain of work done to her face. Remember The Mask? Remember when she actually looked Cuban?

I always wondered why you didn't like her… but now I'm still confused. I think the reason she doesn't embrace her mexican heritage is because she was never taught to be proud of it, but rather grew up having it suppressed all around her. She doesn't know any better and that's her granddad's fault. Let's face it, not everyone is strong enough to embrace heir unique differences. It's more sad than it is infuriating. I feel sorry that such a beautiful woman was raised to be insecure about herself. I feel bad for her.

Her family is from mexico, and she really looks like a mexican. So why she's making a big deal out of this… She is always saying how ashame his grandfather was…the real shame here is that she's not accepting where she comes from…its not like she has to say EVERYWHERE she has latin blood, but she really shouldn't be ashame of that…

First of all she's not 100% mexican. She's french, danish, etc…

I can tell you why Perez keeps picking on her. Pick up a recent copy of ELLE and read the interview:

"IT WAS ALL BECAUSE I WOULDN'T TAKE PHOTOS WITH HIM AT A NIGHTCLUB," SHE SAYS. IT WOULD PROBABLY BE SMART FOR ME TO HANG OUT AND KISS UP TO WHAT'S HIS NAME, PEREZ…"

So, is she proud of her Latin roots? "OF COURSE I'M PROUD OF MY HERITAGE!"

Yeah, your dislike for he is completely unfounded, atleast given these quotes. Lots of Americans are disconnected from their heritage and these quotes just show that in a real way. You can't blame her for her own views, especially in Hollywood where there's only room for 3 or 4 successful actors of a certain race. Besides Lucy Lui and Jackie Chan, how many more prevalent actors of Asian descent can you name? Sometimes you can just be an A-hole.

I don't particularly like Jessica Alba, but there's nothing that says you have to flaunt your heritage. She's from California. People who look to their heritage to define themselves generally lack anything else to define themselves by. My ancestors are Native Americans, Scottish, and German, but I'm not on tribal roles, don't play the bagpipes and don't speak German. Who cares where your ancestors came from? It doesn't define who you are as an individual.

There's nothing wrong with what she said. If anything, she sounds bitter that society judges people according to their last names and physical appearance. Her statements are more of a reaction than an affront to her cultural roots–the interviewer probably made her uncomfortable about not identifying with (and flaunting) her Latin background.

Good for her. There's too much emphasis on judging (and stereotyping) people according to their race and ethnicity. Jessica Alba is being honest and candid about this aspect of her life and I respect her for it.

So what if she identifies more with her white/american heritage than a 25% hispanic heritage? Is there some rule that says if you have a drop of hispanic blood you have to identify yourself by that and call yourself latina? Same things happens with mix-raced folks all over. I've met "black" guys with 80% white heritage that insisted on being called "black". You are entitled to identify yourself by the majority of your bloodline, and, if you choose, disregard the rest. She considers herself an american girl with a mostly white heritage that happens to have a mexican grandfather, she does personally or culturally consider herself hispanic and there is NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!

    Re: Jennifer

sweetie i commend you on your point of view, but learn your constitution first. the U.S. Constitution does not have a provision stating English as the "official language of this country" That was done because of the different nationalities of your forefathers. That is the reason why in this country there are printed materials in different languages. If this country had an official language, it would be illegal to print anything in a language other than English. Look at Quebec where the official language is French and nothing can be posted or printed in English.

Perez this doesn't give you ANY reason to hate her…. You're just a hater, Perez, which is really unfortunate. You sway all these people so easily to hate and love whoever you want. You help to shape Hollywood popularity, as terrible as that is, so instead of being a complete dick cheese, maybe try being nice to people. You could do a lot of good with your influence but instead you focus on nitpicking celebs that you don't like…. Selfish.

WHAT AN ASSHOLE, SHE'S ASHAMED OF BEING CALLED LATINA, INSTEAD OF BEING PROUD? AL, OF US AMERICANS HAVE DIFFERENT ROOTS AND NATIONALITIES. SHE SHOULD STOP MAKING BELEIVE SHE'S SMART AND PICKUP A FEW AMERICAN HISTORY BOOKS. BUT TEN AGAINM, SHE DID SAY HER GRANDFATHER WAS THE ONLY ONE TO GO TO COLLEGE…

Who cares? Why can't she have freedom to feel how she wants? Obviously, you (PEREZ) have a lot of freedom in what you say and how you act. You want to show pride, fine. Jessica doesn't, FINE! Just because she's latina doesn't mean she's got to go around letting everyone know it and act like she's so prideful. So DAMN annoying. Atleast she's honest! A lot of people are saying she's not claiming her heritage. I'm sure if a German was to say they were proud to be German, everyone would jump down their throat calling them a Nazi. Double standards are bull. Why can only minorities be prideful? This is why I am ashamed to be part mexican. Eww!! No respect or decency!

I come from a very intersting and strong background. I respect that background, so I inform people about my culture. Why does she shun herself. If anything jessica we need more strong hispanic women out there, not trying to hide. I am never watching one of her movies again. I am also going to tell all my friends and family about this.
