A Little History Lesson

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Latinolicious > Jessica Alba

jpi_072007rss_jalba51682__opt.jpg

People often ask, "Why do you dislike Jessica "Don't Call Me Latina" Alba so much?"

We'll let her words speak for themselves.

Here are just a few choice quotes from Alba.

She says:

"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."

"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

"My grandfather was the only one in our family to go to college. He made a choice not to speak Spanish in the house. He didn't want his kids to be different."

"[Before] I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."

"My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, … So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere."

"Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde."

You are a sick twisted fuck stick perez.
You have pissed alot of people off with this little "History Lesson"
Perhaps you should have left everyone in the dark as to why you hate on this girl who has done nothing wrong.

    303

Perez, you're looking for an offense where there absolutely none. She is she insulting no one. She spoke her truth and there was no prejudice in it, just her experience of being of color as well as being descended from a particular culture. She's an American, that's what's true for most of us.

Are you pissed off at her for having negative experiences being of Latin descent and daring to talk about it?

What are you ashamed of that you're attacking someone who speaks their truth?

    Deal.

None of that shit is racist… …Whats wrong with calling yourself an American if you live in America you hypocritical bitches???

  5. Joleene says – reply to this

    305

I don't like her because I have heard she is very nasty the "little people." However, I think her candor is refreshing. When Jennifer Lopez was trying push her hip hop singing career she defined herself as being Puerto Rican. The minute she went back to acting that image went away. As an actress nobody wants to be stereotyped. When I see JLo, I see Puerto Rican, no matter what other ethnicity she tries to play. So I see Alba's point. It's very true about Cameron Diaz, she NEVER acknowledges being Hispanic. But it's ok, b/c she is blonde and blue eyed, right? Alba probably faced more shit b/c she is darker complected. Perez needs to grow up, appearance wise he doesn't exactly scream Hispanic either.

    306

Nobody wants any racism at all and now that she says she is an American people are getting after her because she considers herself what everyone else is AN AMERICAN. I have no problem with what she said. I don't consider myself a white Canadian, I am Canadian plain and simple i dont care what color i am or what my nationality is i am Canadian plain and simple equal to everyone else. why do we have to have African American (and let me remind you 90 percent of these black people have never been to Africa) or Native American. If you are born in America you are American accept it. SHe is putting herself across that she considers herself just like everyone else. What's the problem with that?

    You're hating her for this?
Where I come from (Holland) we applaud this kind of behaviour. It's called integration..
There are many people here that take TOO MUCH pride in their heritage.
When their children reach the age where their obligated to go to school the teacher can't communicate with them because they don't speak Dutch!

You're way off on this one Perez.

This article doesn't prove anything Perez except that you are a big fat hater! All she stated was she is an American, it doesnt matter what the color of your skin is we are all the same! Perez I honestly don't know how you sleep with your sleazy self at night, such a sad, lonely existence you must lead.

  10. chillllllllll says – reply to this

    310

i completely understand where shes coming from… if perez or anyone who supports him on this one paid any attention in their american history classes youd know that THREE GENERATIONS AGO america was RACIST. immigrants were persecuted just as much african americans but not as publicly. its perfectly understandable for her to say that she cant call herself a latina because she has no connection to the culture shes not saying it bc she thinks its disgusting shes saying it probably more out of respect that she is not claiming to be something she has no knowledge of… she was raised american so she feels she is american… get over it.

so what? She's right. she is an American of Mexican decent. There is way too much emphasis on ethnic back grounds of people in this country. If you are a citizen of America, you are American.

  14. shuggsfromdowney says – reply to this

    314

Dont twist her words!!! She is only being honest. She doesn't speak spanish, so how can she be considered a Latina Actress?..she wouldn't even be able to understand a conversation. I'm half white and half mexican american. Her grandfather said the Eulogy at MY MEXICAN Grandfathers Funeral. Yes, in the 1950's so cal was hostile and alot of mexican learned english and spoke english only to thier children and grandchildren. They wanted to assimilate..right or wrong it isn't her fault. When you are mixed it is difficult to fit in without taking a side and how can you take a side when you are both?! leave her alone, you CANT call her latina. She is mexican american.. mexican people deal with it! But calling her latina represents that she is in the mexican culture…which would mean speaking thier language.

  17. Lo' says – reply to this

    317

i guess those who can't relate to her don't understand,

it's funny though: these illusive accusations are just swallowed whole by the thickheaded sponges who just gobble up anything you say. At least some of us are trying to see the point.

=] perez is one powerful system.

btw I'm actually studying abroad in Europe and i still feel the same way about my culture as i did before. I don't speak the language (yet) but im trying to get past the annoyance of people trying to "place" me under this category of "who i am". To these people here I'm "the American". and back home we still celebrate some traditions but I'm suppose to have that as a part of me, and it just doesn't feel like it's really "me", just something that's expected.

She's trying to say she didn't grow up as a "Latina" so why all of a sudden is she suppose to be a role model as one? Whoever wants her to be their role model.. then great..
btw whoever said SHE is racist is probably fucking racist too haha..
everyone's a bit racist. but tell me this.. is it worse to be racist towards others or towards your own background?

  21. mia says – reply to this

    321

What is wrong with her statements? She isn't downing Latinos. She is simply saying she doesn't consider herself hispanic. I can entirely relate. My dad's family is from Mexico, but they moved to California in the early 1900's. So by the time my dad was born in 1950 they only spoke english in their household (to fit in with the American culture). My dad later married my mom who is Italian. Again, her family only spoke english in their home to fit into the American culture… even though her parents were both born in Italy and are fluent in Italian. I was then born with blond hair & blue eyes — from the Northern Italian/European genes. Even though I come from Mexican-Italian heritage, I don't consider myself either one. I was born in America and speak only english. Because of my fair complexion, other people don't believe me when I do say I am Mexican & Italian. I still have a great love for my ancestry… the traditions & food, etc… but I don't feel that is part of my everyday life. Like Jessica Alba, I don't think I would feel right if people tried to make me a Mexican or Italian icon. I've never lived in either of those countries and I don't relate to their cultures. I'm just an American.
Of course, I do have a cousin who is a world famous Olympic ice skater. He was labeled Mexican-American by the media… even though he is also part Italian and has never lived in Mexico! But he has a dark complexion, so everyone thinks he is Mexican.

Yes, I to felt like I didn't belong anywhere, but one thing that I will never feel is empathy for my race. Be proud! What a bitch. She also mentioned you in that interview perez which you conveniently forgot to mention. That you don't like her because she wouldn't let you have your picture taken with her. She said, perhaps she should be sucking up to you so you'd stop the spiteful comments??? YOU. ARE. PATHETIC.

  28. ANAMERICANIDIOT says – reply to this

    328

such a hard time with writing this comment because I understand what the girl is saying and want to speak to that - she's talking about the effect of living in a culture that tends to make you feel small, even invisible for not being Anglo while at the same time making that difference the most important thing about you. It sucks but its real.
But so many other folks seems to think THEY get what she's saying too but then tack on all this racist small-minded eurocentric bullshit on top of it. I just about vomited when someone used the term 'race card'…ugh. don't u love how people of color are accused of manipulating race HATRED to their advantage???!! If i tell u that something shitty happened to me cuz i'm black, do you think i'm happy about that? That it feels good for me? That I'm playing a "card" in some fun little game? It's not a fucking game - it's my LIFE! It doesn't feel good at all. In fact it fuckin hurts! And I'm not "playing" anything. When I speak out about acts of racism and discrimination (you call it "playing the race card)") I do so because i'm asking for in making it stop! period.

By the way, Perez, you're an asshole. you dislike her for no reason, and your high on some illusory sense of power. you don't get to decide what an "authentic latina" is and you don't get to decide how people choose to self-idenitfy.

    332

Re: martin – There are plenty of people who are minorities that are ostracized by the larger community. Language and class has a lot to do with it. Latinos who don't speak Spanish are ostracized. Blacks who speak "white" or proper English are ostracized. Why? Because they are different. How many Latinos accept the fact that they are comprised of Indigenous, European, AND African. If we actually learned more about our own hertiage her comment as well as the racial tension between White, Latinos and Blacks would be a non-issue.

I am black, Mexican Indian (Aztec) and Native American (Blackfoot and Cherokee). Do I identify with one group over another? Am I accepted by one group over another? Yes. But have I been ostracized by one group or all at one point? Yes. The life you pave in the US, provides you with the opportunity to change your status and allow your children and grandchildren move forward without stigma. However, stigma often comes from your own ethnicity. Her experience is no different than any other immigrant family who wishes to change how society perceives them.

    338

My grandparents were from Norway, and my Dad was the first to go college. I do not think of myself as Norwegian. Apart from the genocide of Native Americans, this nation was built on the backs of immigrants. Unfortunately there has always been backlash and prejudice towards the newest waves of immigrants. It has happened to every ethnicity of people. There is nothing wrong with contributing to and adopting a common vision and culture for the U.S. that integrates the beautiful aspects of all cultures.

So f**king what?? Does she not have the human right to choose whether she identifies herself as "latin" or not?? Sounds like an overreaction on Ms Perez's part to me…

  40. diane says – reply to this

    340

Growing up, my father always said we were "Spanish". It was only when I had to do a family tree for school that I learned the truth.
My grandparents came across the border and settled in Ohio. Because of the discrimination they faced, my father left home at 15 and Americanized his name.
It was when I learned the truth about my heritage that it was finally accepted. Frankly, where I live, as a "white" Mexican, I am the outcast!
Jessica should get real and be proud of where she comes from. It is comments like hers that make discrimination what it is.

I have a question, when does one become American? I mean white does not mean American, everyone came from another country in the beginning and then eventually wether they were from England, France, Germany, Italy, or where ever they became American. As a latina when can she become an American first, what is wrong with that. She has been here many generations and she now considers herself an American and that is what she is. I believe that when people buy into the fact that Americans are white they help to perpetuate the stereotype that American means white and that is incorrect we are a country of immigrants that come together and we are American. So there!

    351

I often agree with you Perez but on this issue you are way out of line. Rather than repeatedly assassinating the character of someone who's never actually done anything bad to anyone, you might want to have a think about why you are so driven to spout hatred about one person that you probably have never actually met. It says more about you than about Jessica Alba. It's a very unhealthy fixation and bad karma for you.

This chick is only expressing confusion about her heritage, as a decendant of immigrants. She 'looks' Latino so people assume she is, but she doesn't FEEL it as she wasn't raised as part of that culture. So what. That doesn't mean she hates Latinos, she just doesn't think she is one. You are actually being REVERSE RACIST - assuming that she must assimilate a culture because of the way she looks.

Should 3rd generation Asian Americans still embrace Japan and learn Japanese? Actually I'm a white Australian. My ancestors invaded Australia 200 odd years ago so I am the ancestor of immigrants. Does that follow that I should embrace the English, convict heritage of my ancestors. Hold that thought, I'm gonna go rob a bank. Just so Perez doesn't develop any vindictive little issues about me.

  52. Kat says – reply to this

    352

Stop judging people, Perez. Just becauase she doesnt acknowledge her latin roots makes he no worse than you, you disgust me. You preach about accepting people blah blah, but as soon as someone tries to be accepted as "mainstream" you hate them. She doesnt like latina culture? So what, and why do you care? Just becuase you are flamboyantly gay and can't fit in, doesnt mean other people should be condemned for wanting to be more mainstream. You are so judgemental it's sick, I'm not going to come to this website anymore.

Ok, how is ANY of that offensive?????
My family is Polish and I've never spoken a word of Polish before in my life…Doesn't mean I'm a disgrace to my last name.
I'm American, I was born in America and was raised in America and I'll die in America. I'm American.
Just because I don't wrap myself in the Polish flag and run down the street doesn't mean I'm not proud of who I am. I'd be more likely to wrap myself in an American flag and run down the street. Who cares if she doesn't feel connected to her heritage, it was her upbringing. If her family spoke Spanish and made her proud of who she was it would be different. But they didn't and that is none of your fucking business.

  59. Cara says – reply to this

    359

I am half Mexican (other half Japanese, Irish, Norwegian) and I can relate to what she's saying. My grandmother didn't teach my father Spanish, but it was because her heart was broken after my grandfather died. My dad did not experience much of his culture being one of the first Mexican families in Kenosha, WI. It's not his fault that he blended into the melting pot that everyone talks about America being. I can tell he feels odd identifying with a race, as do I. It's not that I'm not proud of my heritage, it's just that I wasn't submersed in it. I want to say I'm latina, but I don't fit the typical mold because I wasn't raised with Mexican traditions.

It's great if people are proud of their heritage, but are you gonna give an American with mostly Irish heritage crap if they don't identify with their culture? Or Italian, or whatever other nationality?

Let it go idiot. Just because she isn't trying to play the race card every other day and over-pronouncing Spanish words doesn't mean she hates her heritage. Many, many immigrants had the same opinions as her grandfather, we're here to be Americans and Americans speak English. My Danish great-great grandparents would not allow anything but English in the house and changed their last name to be more American. You are a moron.

    Re: Franny B

Darling, read up on Roman history. Do you know what made the Roman empire so great? It because the people honored ROME. And do you know what made Rome fall? It's because too many foreigners lived in Rome - who had no loyalty to the empire. Read up on it, please.

Let's not let this happen to America, a nation of diversity! We all need to unite as Americans! The greatness that America was is fading… because we are being separated as a people with this kind of crap!

Face it and grow up Perez. She's honest. She's American. She's not Latino. She's happy. Her family is happy. Who cares if the fat blue-haired cuban isn't. 10 Generations ago, my family lived in Ireland. I don't consider myself Irish. I don't even like Lucky Charms.

She has a right to not call herself a Latina..only one of her parents is Latino and she was raised in America. Being Latina is more about culture..I would think..Leave her alone.

I don't really see the problem. Why should she force herself to feel Latin when she doesn't see herself that way? Let me use an analogy…. why should Perez force himself to feel straight if he doesn't see himself that way? Alba's grandfather was Mexican, Perez's grandfather was (presumably) straight.. so why should either of them limit who they are to fit into those restraints?

And another thing…. why are Americans so obsessed with being hyphenated? African-American, Mexican-American, Viking-American… you are all just American and the sooner you figure that out and stop all this self imposed segregation, the better your society will be. Here in Australia, we are all just Australian - the indigineous Aboriginals, the descendants of the British settlers and convicts, the Italian/Greek migrants of the 50's and the boat people of the 70's. There is no Italian-Australian, or German-Australian… in fact I think if someone tried to start calling themselves that, they'd end up being called Moron-Australian.

She should just keep her mouth shut and look pretty. The more she talks the uglier she gets. Talk about putting your foot in your big mouth lol. I can see why she didn't go to college, she's too stupid. I tell my kids the entertainment business is for ignorant people. People that worship and look up to them, really need to get a life.

What is wrong with what she said exactly?
She is telling the truth. Look at the statistics on how many babies were born to white, black and hispanic people. Hispanic women have the most babies, followed by black. What she says is TRUE. So, what exactly is the big deal in that?
I think her grandfather had a choice to bring his kids up in America and speak only English and his choice was fine. My grandfather was Irish, yet I don't know barely anything about Ireland.
Does that make me a bad person? I don't identify with Irish people on a cultural level. WHAT THE HELL IS THE BIG DEAL?

Perez - if anything, you are the one trying to pigeon hole people here by taking offense from the fact that simply because somebody's grandparents were from latinamerica they should themselves present themselves as 100% latino - isn't she just being honest?
Perez we love your stuff and we visit this website religously but your persistently aggressive attitude towards Jessica Alba does act as a deterrent! So try and go easy on her will you?

I love how most people are shitting on Perez here, good. His onesided liberal veiw of the world is disgusting. Let people live how they want to, on their own accord, not on Perez's. Stop putting so much emphysis on race, it only creates problems, if she's ashamed of her latino background good for her. I doubt Perez would be shitting on someone who was trying to surpress their English ethnicity, they would be praised. Perez you're ignorant

My grandparents and parents were all born iin the US — South Texas. They raised us up to speak English first. I didn't learn Spanish until i went to college and I think it was a mistake to not teach us but I don't fault them they were just going on their own experience. You should not judge a decision on what her parents decided. I speak Spanish all the time and feel closer to my parents because of it.

I think for those of you who have not dealt w/ being mixed race should shut up. I am mixed just like her and I can relate. I don't choose a race cause it's a smack in the face to the other parent. It's like I'm denying them because everyone wants you to choose and to pigeon hole you. It's wrong to hate on her because she doesn't want to be labeled. If that's how you want to be then better start hating Raquel Welch, Linda Carter, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Bach, Rita Hayworth, Sabrina Bryan, Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, Joaquin Phoenix, Edward Furlong, Joanna Kerns, Freddie Prinze Jr., Irene Cara, Dave Navarro, and Ryan Cabrera none of which talk, claim, or have anything to do with their latin side. So quit just picking on Jessica, many many others have done it in Hollywood and prolly still will. So leave it alone.

Perez, I love you, but I have to say your off the mark in this case. My grandfather was from Austria and would not allow any of his 7 children, including my father to speak anything but English and to refer themselves as Americans, only. Many 1st,2nd, & 3rd generation Americans who settled in the U.S during the 1900's through the 1960's wanted to fit it as "Americans,"so they said no to keeping their language and cultural traditions. Which SUCKED. My great Grandfather would not even tell people he was Irish because many businesses had signs that actually said "Will Not Hire Irish"or "No Irish Need Apply" It was a liability. Forget the fact that he was a war Hero & fought for our country.
This feeling of alienation and "trying to fit in" happened in ALL cultural groups that came to America. The past 40 years a lot changes have happened and America has embraced it's cultural diversity - Thank God!
Give her a break Perez & try and remember our countries history, both positive and negative.

Just because your blonde doesnt make you dumb, just because your black doesn't make you thief, just because you are chinese doesn't make you the smartest person in the countryand not all Mexicans Are illegals. The point I'm trying to make is that America was never one whole race hence the term”United”.The only thing that Blacks, Indians, Mexicans, Chinese and even white people have when they came here was their heritage. Being White doesn't make you and american they are the ones that has the most things they can be mixed with Polish,Italian,Greek,Greman and etc.

is being brought up to speak spanish not "american"? i guess an american by alba's definition is someone who is completely rootless. to be ethnic is not american. forget that one is born on american soil, taught "american ideals," but someone who is latina(o) no matter how many generations down the road isn't "american". i find her definition of what an american is problematic. what she needs a re-education about her roots, because she cannot say she is where she is because of her hard work. there are many who've laid the bricks down so she could walk on them ever so flawlessly.
