A Little History Lesson

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Latinolicious > Jessica Alba

jpi_072007rss_jalba51682__opt.jpg

People often ask, "Why do you dislike Jessica "Don't Call Me Latina" Alba so much?"

We'll let her words speak for themselves.

Here are just a few choice quotes from Alba.

She says:

"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."

"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

"My grandfather was the only one in our family to go to college. He made a choice not to speak Spanish in the house. He didn't want his kids to be different."

"[Before] I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."

"My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, … So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere."

"Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde."

Re: sidney – You ARE SO IGNORANT! THere are MORE WHITE PEOPLE in American than blacks and Latinos so how on earth can we produce more babies than any other ethnic group? I don't know where you got your stastics from (maybe the KKK website or something) but they are very flawed!

  2. UGHHHHH says – reply to this

    402

    Re: martin

American is a nationality not a race. And just because a person is black doesn't make them "african american". How do you know their ancestors didn't come from the Caribbean or Jamaica or one of those islands like that?? You race obsessers seriously need to get over this incessant need to divide everyone. American does NOT equal white. White, black, asian - all of these races could be considered american. Seriously.

  3. I SUPPORT JESSICA says – reply to this

    403

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH WHAT SHE'S SAYING, THIS IS WHAT IMMIGRANTS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO: ASSIMILATE! THIS IS AMERICA NOT MEXICO SO IF YOU WANT TO BE MEXICAN AND SPEAK SPANISH THEN GO BACK! WHY DO YOU IMMIGRATE TO A COUNTRY YOU HAVE NO RESPECT FOR POPULATED BY WHITE PEOPLE THAT YOU HATE? OH THAT'S RIGHT, TO LEECH OFF US! ASSIMILATE AND SPEAK ENGLISH OR GET THE FUCK OUT. IF I MOVE TO MEXICO I HAVE TO ADOPT THEIR WAYS AND SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE SO WHY NOT THE SAME HERE? POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS RACIST ANTI-WHITE BULLSHIT.

Perez, I really hope you're reading these comments. I think it might be time to lay off the Jessica "don't call me Latina" Alba thing. It's offensive not in a fun way.

she´s not latin, why do you think she is?
take this shitty example: if I´m white, but I have a black grandmother, I have to say I´m black? you-re all full of BS!

  7. GOD says – reply to this

    407

I really didn´t dislike her before but after seeing those quotes, I´m a mexican, no matter where I was born, but this bitch is a hipocrite, she talks about not even wanting to speak spanish but yet she acceppts being on covers of hispanic magazine that only feature hispanic entertainers! she even quoted on some shit about how Eva Longoria is representing the latin women and she includes herself! what a stupid hispanic women, she tries not to attach herself to heir heritage unless it will get her covers or props from others. The thing she says about Cameron Diaz, I think her fucking world is so small she only thinks latinos are darked skin and have dark hair, man she is fucking stupid, I´m actually blonde, light skinned, pure mexican, I was born in the USA but my family comes from Jalisco, Mexico & the other side of my family is also really mexican. Damn she pissed me off for real, I´ll never look or think about her the same, who cares if at least she's not getting high or drunk & stays at home she is a hipocrite to me, a really pathetic one at that, THANK YOU PEREZ, YOU OPENED MY EYES ABOUT THIS LATINA BITCH, HOPE HER BABY HAS AMAZING DARK COLORED MEXICAN SKIN :D :D :D :D
    LUV YOU PEREZ!! ;) ;) ;)

  9. Justin says – reply to this

    409

    What's the big deal here?
    She IS American!!
All she's saying is why does she have to be pigeon-holed and separated as being a "Latina actress." She's an actress - what difference does her race make??
    You're ignorant, Perez.

  11. TF says – reply to this

    411

Perez, let it go, she made incredibly valid points. You accept your heritage, she does not. So move on a don't hold a grudge. She considers herself an American, not a Mexican, just because she's not connected to her culture, doesn't mean you should burn her at the stake

  12. teri lam says – reply to this

    412

    Perez,
I think you, and anyone who takes offense to her statements is stupid. I am half Puerto-Rican, and half Caucasian. I grew up with the Caucasian side of my family, so I don't feel Puerto Rican at all. Does that mean somethings wrong with me. I don't speak Spanish, and people always expect me to. I think you should teach your children English if you are going to live in America. She isn't denying her roots. She is simply saying she feels no attachment to them. Further, who says she has to? I don't. It does make one feel unable to relate when people look at you and expect you to speak Spanish, or be a stereotype of what they think a Latina is. We are all Americans in this Country. There is nothing wrong with being proud of that if that is what you relate to. Perez, you are showing true ignorance in this matter, and I feel sorry for you.

this made me laugh, and laugh and laugh.
im a PROUD latina, and would never NOT want to. thats horrible lol! HORRIBLE. shes disgrace and i hope one day she realized what a BEAUTIFUL culture latinos are, and when we DO get treated differently, its because they're jealous ;D
we've got the prettiest women, are hardworking, SMART, and again.. BEAUTIFUL.
shes a trick, and her dad is one STUPID mindless man.

  15. Becodis says – reply to this

    415

You are all seeing this as, "She's proud to be an American, so what?" issue. She is Latina and that is all there is to it. Her comment about how she has finally "cut loose" is a slap in the face to all Latinos out there. She should be ashamed of herself.

  16. Rachel Rosas says – reply to this

    416

I almost feel sorry for her…her family has messed her up. It's really pathetic when people do not acklowedge and celebrate their ancestry…be it Mexican, French, or Irish. Oh well…a sell-out is a sell-out…she sure has spread her seeds around…

  17. Janet says – reply to this

    417

Perez- You need to lighten up. She's not saying that she doesn't LIKE being a Latina, just that she doesn't FEEL like one. Check out her comments about how her grandpa raised her.

  18. Perez is a self hater...he's ashamed to be white says – reply to this

    418

Re: Perez is a Bastard – Your skin color doesn't decide who you are, how you were raised does. If you are black and were raised by white parents in an all white area and didn't grow up with any blacks you wouldn't think of yourself as black because that isn't what you were raised with. You would identify with whites because your experience is "white" and there is nothing wrong with that. If you say that your identity is your skin color then you are saying that there is something wrong with other races and that's sick. People who are up in arms about what Jessica said are just racists who hate white people and are pissed she thinks of herself as white. And for the record there is no such thing as a "latin" race, Latins are in fact WHITE. There are only 4 races: black, asian, semetic and caucasian. So Perez, you are WHITE whether you want to be or not. Talk about self hatred….

  19. danielle says – reply to this

    419

all you did was make her more likeable and make you seem more like a racist. Why do you care so damn much if she doesn't feel connected to her heritage. It's her choice to embrace it or not, not yours. To criticize someone for those reasons makes you an arrogant and ignorant fool.

  20. Jay says – reply to this

    420

Her and her family are pathetic. Being hispanic doesn't make you different, they should be proud of what and who they are. They're just ignorant like the rest of the world.

  21. KansasMom says – reply to this

    421

Sorry Perez. I didn't mind these comments back when she first made them and you printed them…and I don't mind them now! I'm Hispanic and she's telling my story too! When you're raised to ignore your heritage AND to stay proud of your heritage…it's tricky! I think Jessica is doing fine. She's in the spotlight and that's not an easy place to be when you try to speak up.
Quit being such a hater Perez. Hate is Easy. Compassion is much tougher. Give her a break and while you're at it…ease up on Brit too. Report the story - but Stop the Hate!

  22. Waverley says – reply to this

    422

I see NOTHING wrong with her statements. She's only expressing her inability to identify as one specific race, which is very common among ethnically diverse cultures in the States and around the world. The fact that she didn't grow up speaking Spanish and celebrating the culture was a decision made by her father and grandfather, not her. Would you rather she insincerely celebrate a culture she's unfamiliar with just because of her skin color? Please.

And, by the way, aren't you a bit of a hypocrite for criticizing Jessica Alba for expressing herself, when your own career is purely based upon the First Amendment?

  23. Laura says – reply to this

    423

If you agree with Jessica and youre not latino of course youre gonna agree. but if youre latino youre gonna think she's stupid because she is! i was born here and my parents were born in mexico im fucken mexican and jessica is too she's retarted

  24. Lauren D. says – reply to this

    424

it kinda makes you wonder if she thinks any of these remarks are off color.
But i guess it stems from her grandfather, who apparently was ashamed of his heritage. Hate and ignorance breed just that.. hate and ignorance.
    so sad…

  25. penelope says – reply to this

    425

Most of her comments make good sense. If her family did not pass on tradition to her, how is she supposed to feel that cultural connection? And she makes a good point about Cameron Diaz being more latina. Just because she has a latin last name and genetics, why the hell do you need to force a culture that doesn't reflect her upbringing? I certainly wouldn't call myself an italian actress just because my great grandparents were born there.

  26. saul good says – reply to this

    426

shut up fucking asshole perez, a lot of people feel that way about their heritage for one reason or another. i feel that way myself about being black.

  27. madinina says – reply to this

    427

Those who hate and despise her are probably the same who would jump at her throat if she played the latina card and claimed her latin roots (saying all the crap the other girls tell:"I love mexican food, latin music is part of my daily life,my heart is spanish blabla….).They would be the fisrt to call her hypocrite,to reproach her to label herself Latina since she's only 1/4 mexican.

She doesn't seem to be ashamed of herself but rather lucid about the fact that people with a mixed ethnicity are always asked to prove their supposed loyalty to a community and discover quite early they can never win.
You're always too much of a thing or not enough. She chose to let these things behind her, good for her.

  28. Lodi says – reply to this

    428

Uh,is it me or does she come across as smart in all her quotes.

    LOL,Oh perez.

Madura imbecil, no esta diciendo que odia a los latinos, esta diciendo que ama ser americana, es patriota y eso es algo envidiable.Mas gente deberia ser como ella. Solo estas amargo porque has perido un role model cuando ella nunca pidio ser eso.

I am offended that all these racist mexicans are sitting on American soil leeching off American taxpayers illegally while spewing HATE against white people. It's hilarious that these people have the nerve to call us racist when all they do is spew vile garbage against the very people who gave them opportunities they couldn't get in their own shitty country. Time to kick them all out. INGRATES.

  33. gret says – reply to this

    433

The problem here is that latin magazinesm latin webistes, any latino welcomes with open arms anyone who is even 1% latino (from Latin America). Technically she is still american because Mexico is part of North America, a fact which has caused debate because it is not taught in American schools but is taught in latin america and Europe. Also what really bothers other people is that she is trying to clense herself of her roots.. (Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose). I completely understand that you should be proud to be an American! anyone who lives in this country should be proud.. but it is easier for people of other countries to understand these ties that exsist.. I'm not hating on "true" Americans its just a connection that can bring people together and in the end if she doesnt want to mexican then go get plastic surgery.. lets see how "sexy" people will consider you then

Also, if she is so worried about "Mexicans" and the world population…she should have her tubes tied. I would hate for her to spread seed!
I didn't like her before I read the comments….just because she hasn't been in anything worth renting on DVD much less paying to see at the box office.
WHAT IS REALLY SAD HERE IS THAT SHE CAN TRY TILL HELL FREEZES OVER TO BE WHITE….BUT IT IS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN…YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE!!
Besides, if it wasn't for her who else would Perez bitch about.

    Wait a min,

MY great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers all immigrated here from Italy…when they had children, they did not speak Italian in their homes at all…because they wanted their children to assimilate to the American culture. She's saying the same thing you dumbasses. In essence, she is saying she is as American as I am. "Hispanics" and "Latinos" need to get over themselves if they choose to come live and take advantage of America's society.

    442

Perez, I love you site, but I think you need to lighten up on Ms. Alba. You can tell from what she says that she has struggled with her identity and being acceptance. And I agree with some of the other comments…why did you choose "Hilton" as your stage name? Doesn't sound very Cuban to me.

It's OK to make fun of the crazy behavior of celebrities, but being as a gay man, surely you can understand where she is coming from.

    447

OMG, some of you people are soo stupid :| the point is, she's totally not proud of her heritage and her ethnicity, which is what the small-minded people that wouldn't except her grandfather wanted. Total rejection of her heritage. And being American isn't one culture, one look, one hair-colour or skin colour, it's all of the people that celebrate the American culture aswell as their, maybe, original culture. I think her statements are totally un-American! She just feeds in to this negative perception that small-minded people have of hispanics! And that is why Perez, and I dislike her so much!

  48. Samantha says – reply to this

    448

I hate Jessica Alba, but because she just comes off as a bitch. These comments actually were comforting to me, because I'm reading someone else who's coming from a similar background that has the same struggles with their ethnic identity - our grandparents raised our family the same way her grandparents raised hers. I'm half-Mexican, half-German (3rd generation for both), and I physically look more like the German side. My brother has the opposite situation - while he's struggled to fit in with his caucasian friends, I've been ignored and openly hated by latinos who don't believe that I have any hispanic roots.

Being a minority is a tricky issue for anyone. Don't hate someone just because she had an upbringing that discouraged rather than embraced their roots - that's one of the few things she can't help.

LOOK IT UP HERE ON PEREZS ARCHIVES, WHAT A DUMB LATINA BITCH.

OSEA QUE LA PERRA USA SU HERENCIA HISPANA PARA QUEDAR BIEN CON UNOS, LOS LATINOS, Y PARA LOS GRINGOS DICE QUE NO SE SIENTE LATINA PARA QUEDAR BIEN CON ELLOS, PINCHE PUTA HIPOCRITA, ME CAE MAL AHORA, ANTES ME CAÍA BIEN, PERO SHIT, THANKS PEREZ FOR OPENING MY EYES :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

  51. you infuriate me says – reply to this

    451

you fail to mention how shes not just of mexican heritage - her mom is french and danish. all these "latinas" on here bitching how theyre 100% latina and proud - good for you! but shes not. shes 50% latina and blood doesnt really mean anything expcept how you look. she wasnt raised as a mexican. yall trippin! and just cuz she doenst want to be called a latina doesnt mean she doesnt have culture or identity - she is an american. not a french-danish-mexican-american. i dont see anyone bitching about white celebrities who dont identify with their european culture of 3 generations ago. latinos are way too obsessed with race. and shes totally right about cameron diaz. just cuz jessica alba is a little darker she cant be an "all american girl" like cammy d who is also half latina? youre an idiot perez. not everyone grew up in little havana, lots of immigrants had to assimilate or else they would be discriminated against even more, so how do you expect that culture to live on? and oh ya, hispanics are very racist amongst themselves too, so it doenst surprise me that she wasnt embraced as a latina growing up - since she prob wasnt full blood enough for them…until she became famous that is. then they claim her.

    I'm so confused.
What the hell is wrong with what she said?
If anything, I feel bad for her. She grew up with Latina roots and her family encouraging her to deny those roots and be more American, with Americans telling her to be more Latina. That's probably how it's been her entire life, the poor girl.
Perez: Are you jealous because she's hot and gets more attention and is way more rich than you? Get over yourself!

Or are you too ignorant to comprehend people who dont pretend that years of misery they experience never happened so gossip columnists and the media will love them? At least shes being honest, and polite about it too. Shes not playing the 'latina' card for people to like her.

  56. Laura says – reply to this

If she feels that way, she feels that way. As a 1st generation American, I sympathize with Jessica in a lot of ways. Thankfully, I had the privilege of growing up knowing and understanding my heritage. Through those comments she made, Jessica in no way is saying that she dislikes her heritage, she's just saying she does not have a connection towards it. It's not only pointless, but it is extremely childish of you to bash her for only those reasons.

She has the right to express her thoughts just as you do.

  68. Gigohead says – reply to this

Why can't Jessica break the cycle of assimilation. She could do that by easily take a few courses in Spanish. She can use her prego time to learn her roots and take a course in Hispanic culture.

THIS is all nonsense. She has no obligation to be 'proud' and open about here heritage just because she's a hispanic. I don't think she appears to be ASHAMED of it. It's just something that doesn't hold much relevance to her. She isn't a traitor. People have the right to define themselves. Her grandfather wanted to reinvent himself and hasn't passed on the culture…so what? She doesn't talk shit about anyone. She just doesn't want labels on her. Get real Perez. You have enough Hispanic pride for the rest of'em anyhoo. Besides..she's part Danish anyway,

OMG! I'm american, I'm white and I'm learning Spanish, which is a very difficult but beautiful lenguage to learn, I think this girl was a little bit stupid. There's nothing wrong in speaking more than 1 lenguage. She's so stupid, she had the chance to learn more and I think having a latin background should be something to have at least a more rich culture. I think everybody agrees that she's a beautiful girl, but she hasn't realized that part of her beauty is pretty much because she has a latin background, otherwhise maybe she would be another ugly blonde.

Im glad she doesnt condsider herself Mexican because shes not. Shes like 3rd generation, doesnt speak the language, doesnt know what its like having to be different. It would be insincere for her to call herself mexican or latina because shes white washed already. I hate when i see people just jumping on the band wagon and trying to be hispanic cause its "in" or more accepted. After a few generations, youre no longer mexican. She can call herself hispanic if she wanted because she is, due to her roots. But i rather she not, cause shes to white washed to be calling herself hispanic. After a few generations, you are just American. Its like white girls who claim italian decent but dont speak italian. After a few generations youre just american. AND FOR THE RECORD I DONT LIKE ALBA BECAUSE SHE DOESNT ACCEPT THAT ALL HER ROLES SHES PLAYED ARE ALL CAUSE OF EYE CANDY. SHE STILL THINKS SHE HAS ACTING TALENT.

My great-grandparents immigrated from Portugal, and they did the same. They spoke Portuguese between one another, to other immigrants, and in front of their kids, but they didn't make a big deal about the kids learning Portuguese. I don't feel less Portuguese because of that; I'm proud to be Portuguese, but I don't feel the need to shout it in the streets. I don't understand why what Jessica is saying is bad. She's a proud American. I think we could use a few more of them in our country.

i think she is stupid because she should be proud of being a latina. i'm proud of being latina! and even living in the US doesn't change who you are. trying to be just like anyone else just because you don't want people to make fun of you or your accent or whatever is lame, it just proves that she is not secure about her roots because she is beautiful because of the mixture of cultures.

and fuck her grandpa fuck her father fuck her. noone should forget about their roots

shes right you idiot, if she were to parade herself as a latina actress she would be made fun of just as much for being fake, if you read the quotes shes not saying being hispanic is bad, she is proud of hispanic acceptance in hollywood now. Shes disconnected from that part of her cultural makeup because of her upbringing and for you to get on her about that make you look like a moron.

You cant compare someone like her to someone like Eva Mendez, whom you praise constantly, the two are completely different.

Along with being Hispanic, Jessica Alba is also Greek, Danish, and French.. you dont see the French labeling her as Jessica "Dont call me French" Alba.
I can see if she was 100% Mexican, born in Mexico, and was brought up to speak Spanish, then denies everything about ther heritage, but that is not the case, She is neither Mexican, nor French, nor Danish.. she is American and she represents the beautiful multi-culture melting pot that is America.

if you hate her for what she said, then i think you're the one who has a problem. She's basically saying she didn't have a hispanic upbringing and for her to consider herself latina, it would be a disgrace to any and all that's considered "latina". She didn't diss the latin community but she was being true to herself.

To those who don't understand where she's coming from, I suggest you read what she said again and think about it. If you still don't get it, then you probably should brush up on your english. Gracias!

Hey, don't you think she's just trying to be honest, rather than claiming her ethnicity like some celebs, in order to make them seem more "down to earth" or under-privileged? she's being honest about how she can't really connect to her mexican roots, which is an issue for many third-generationers, because three gens ago it was difficult for parents to be 'foreign' and they didn't want their children to experience that.

You'll see her 10 years from now, when she is not hot anymore, begging for latino community to embrace her since latinos are loyal fans. The saddest part is that she always wanted to cut ties. I don't know if saying those types of things are properly said, but that doesn't come from an intelligent person. If she really wanted to cut the latino ties, why didn't she changed her last name to something else…hmmm maybe at casting is good to have a name that is kind of an outcast. opportunities and opportunists. I hope that her child is darker than her and then we'll see what she will do. In a culture where diversity reigns, as the US was formed from immigrants, there's always this sense of inferiority by some uneducated persons like her. I'm glad you posted this PEREZ. Now I'm totally disgusted by her and I feel sorry by the values her unborn child will learn from her and her family. Sad, very sad

how exactly does she define "american"- to merely be white? what about the original NATIVE americans?? does she not realize that "american" is not a race?! the past 3 generations of her family were born in california- this makes her and them american CITIZENS, but nothing changes the fact that she is MEXICAN by HERITAGE… she needs to learn to differentiate both!! shame on her for such ignorance!

i also feel that its really sad to see the lack of self-acceptance and self-love from her

i've never commented before, but this stuck me. the thing she said about mexicans spreading their seeds is pretty f-ed up, but i do feel like she has a point. if she wasn't raised with her heritage as a part of her life, then why should she have to identify just because he has the last name alba? i'm first generation (my parents immigrated in the 70s) and was raised with very strong ties to their culture. and even though it's a huge part of who i am, i don't like to be solely identified as that particular culture. i am american, and i actually find it offensive that people can't get past my skin color to understand that. i appreciate that people can identify my race, but i detest questions about how long i've been here and where i learned to speak english so well. this country's come a long way in terms of not only accepting people for their differences, but embracing those differences. but sometimes the public (the media) is too quick to stick a label on someone and have that be representative of an entire group. hate her because she's a crappy actress. hate her for the mexican seed-spreading comment. but don't try and give her crap because she doesn't identify with her heritage in a way that you deem acceptable.
She also has a point about cameron diaz. she doesn't call herself a latin actress, so why should alba have to?
    you're an idiot.
