That's not bad at all! She's just doing the OPPOSITE of J.Lo and Christina, who all of a sudden found their Latin roots when it became The Thing. She's not trying to get in on an ethnicity because it's trendy. She's just a normal American girl with a genealogy tree like the rest of us.

I think she is trying to say how badly she wants to be identified as an individual and not be grouped, regardless of which group it is. I can totally understand. I am from a very diverse mixed background and am proud of all of it and would never embrace only part of my heritage at the expense of the rest. Nor should she.

this speaks more to the history of the US than Jessica… she's the result of racist actions imposed during her grandfather's era. My folks experienced similarly (I'm 3rd gen. too) and did not speak spanish because the teachers would make fun of them and have the class point and laugh at them too! this was a matter of survival during the '30s -50s. Unfortunately, US educational system doesn't teach us anything about non-white or women's history except for a paragraph here and there. No wonder we're ignorant and ashamed of being associated with an ethnic or racial identity other than white.

BTW my last name is also Alba… I’m Italian moved to America when I was 4, grew up in a Puerto Rican neighborhood where everyone thought I was Puerto Rican and I was darker than most of them.. I didn’t speak Spanish and any Italian Americans I knew couldn’t speak Italian cause Italian Americans have completely disconnected from their culture… so I feel that same disconnect that she did but in a different way.

A similar scenario is if you claimed to not want to be known as gay but as an individual. Just because you're open about being gay doesn't mean you want your homosexuality to be your the only thing that is memorable about you. If you said this, and other gay people became upset because they thought you were trying to hide or deny your sexuality, what would you think? My grandparents all left Italia in their early childhood, for France. My parents are French and I am French. I have never ever considered myself italian, even though I have an Italian name. That's called INTEGRATION!
