Why do people come to America from other countries and then expect for other Americans to bow down to their nationality? Ms. Alba is not a racist–nor is anyone else who doesn't see anything wrong with what she said. It is racist to say that you don't like hispanics. It is not racist to say that you don't care that someone is hispanic. In fact, that is the equality that this nation has been striving for. If the hispanic community wants to be treated fairly, then stop expecting everyone in this country to adjust to your culture. If you want to live in America, then be American. If you care so much about your nationality that you have to parade it around, then maybe you shouldn't be here in the first place.
She's not exactly eloquent, but does a good job expressing how she feels about her racial heritage. I like what she has to say. She is explaining why she doesn't feel right to jump on the ethnic wagon. I respect her attitude. If she were claiming to be a Latina actress, she would get slammed by everyone for being hypocritical. How many black celebrities change their names and adopt this street swagger and demeanor, when they're actually named Mike Davis and were active in the Thespian Club at their suburban highschool? Jessica Alba is leaving the acting on the screen, and being true to who she really is. It's honest. I like her.
She can't help having been born into a family where it seemed more important to assimilate into American culture than to identify with Latino culture. This wasn't under her control. And I'm sure she DID feel out of place and unaccepted as she was growing up (hey - who doesn't feel that way growing up???) Would it be nice if she was more able to feel a part of both the American culture and her family's heritage? Sure. But bottom line: she was born here, and that makes her an American first and foremost. If she chooses to prefer being called an American, I gotta applaud that. America is a pretty decent place to live, all things considered, which is why people are willing to risk their lives to come here. Like, maybe, Perez, some of your Cuban relatives did??? Do you think you would have the same freedom to write what you write and be an openly gay man that you have here if you lived in Cuba today, by the way? I doubt it. So let Jessica call herself anything she wants, and if she doesn't want to be primarily identified as a Latina, who does that really hurt? It's kinda sad that she seems somewhat hostile to her cultural heritage, but that was handed to her by her family's choices, not hers. (Of course, whether she calls herself an American, a Latina, or whatever - - - she still can't act her way out of a wet paper bag.)
I'm still trying to figure out why she still gets hated on? She's right. She's a Latin/Caucasian girl who was raised to be American and wasn't raised in the Mexican culture. So why should she try to "cash in on her roots" if she's not really grounded in the culture. She grew up not feeling very excepted on either side (White/ Mexican) and now is being bashed because she's being honest about not feeling any real attachment to being Latin. I would be more upset if she was using her latin heritage to make and extra $. If you want to dislike her, it should be for a better reason than that.

I am an immigrant from a latin country, so I'm obviously not even first generation american, but I already totally get her. i'm a first generation canadian, and my mother is Argentinian and my father is Filipino. The way Jessica was brought up is exactly the same way I was. My parents never spoke a word of their mother tongue in order to keep me from being different than the largely Caucasian neighbourhood i was raised in. I can't call myself a Latina either, because all that I have is my genes and my mother as proof, I share nothing but that.
we shouldn't be judged or persecuted for being raised in the Melting Pot ideology that most immigrants comply to. we should be proud of where we were brought up, after all, that's all some of even know.

I think Jessica Alba's comments are warranted. She is just being completely open and honest about how she feels in regard to her Mexican roots. She is trying to transcend labels and not be called a "Latina" actress but simply an actress. I would hope that in America today we could all transcend labels and embrace one another as human beings. Of course she is Mexican and will always be but my goodness do not crucify her if she cannot relate to the latina culture. Every person's character is so multifaceted that you can't strictly label someone based on their race and ethnicity. Genetics is obviously part of who you are but environment is as well! Jessica's environment was not consistent with a Latino upbringing and thus she feels like a fraud if she considers herself completely latina. Perez, if you hate Jessica Alba that's your opinion and no one should tell you how you should feel. Just as no one should tell Jessica how she should feel.

I am the 1st generation in my family to be born in Australia and already I consider myself Australian.
