A Little History Lesson

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Latinolicious > Jessica Alba

jpi_072007rss_jalba51682__opt.jpg

People often ask, "Why do you dislike Jessica "Don't Call Me Latina" Alba so much?"

We'll let her words speak for themselves.

Here are just a few choice quotes from Alba.

She says:

"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."

"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

"My grandfather was the only one in our family to go to college. He made a choice not to speak Spanish in the house. He didn't want his kids to be different."

"[Before] I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."

"My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, … So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere."

"Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde."

I'm Asian but I'm not Chinese. Love China btw. My Asian parents immigrated here in the 80's when I was young. I was married to a caucasian scottish/irish and divorced him and kept his last name due to our beautiful daughter who is a jessica alba younger version. Because of my daughter's multicultural upbringing, she is an ALL AMERICAN GIRL and speaking the language where I was born is being counterproductive or difficult for her. I believe in speaking good/decent english allow me the opportunity to better myself. I don't particularly care if my daughter only speak english to advance her life and career to a better world not only in America but hopefully all over the world just as long as she know how to respect other people's culture and religion. I may be Asian externally, but I am as AMERICAN as apple pie in the southern state of N. Carolina and I also love tofu.

I don't see what the problem is! My last name is hispanic but I also do not speak spanish and while being aware that there is hispanic blood running through my veins, I don't see why it should matter at all? I consider myself american and not a Costa Rican or "Peruana" like my name suggests. It bugs me that people put so much store in race. Who cares?

  6. lisa says – reply to this

    806

okay i'm was born in peru and am hispanic , i live in america and although my roots are in south america i feel very much american. I see exactly what she is saying and i feel like it doesn't or shouldn't affect or offend the american-spanish population. If you are offended by that , don't be so touchy, jeez.

  7. tlr says – reply to this

    807

Actually after reading her quote I have more admiration for her. I get tired of Latinos pushing their ethnicity in your face. If people are so proud of Mexico why in the hell do we have millions of illegals in our country. Good for her to be proud to be an American.

  8. cupkate327 says – reply to this

    808

I understand what she's saying, even if she doesn't always say it eloquently. My parents are both of German heritage and my family has lived in the U.S. for several generations. No one calls me German-American and I don't identify as German-American and no one has a problem with it. The only reason people are up in arms about Alba is because her heritage is visible in her features. People need to recognize that race and ethnicity are personal and about self-identity.

  9. Jesse says – reply to this

    809

I dont understand why any of what she said is a reason to dislike her. my family is part scottish but i dont call myself scottish american because i was never in scotland i have never been to scotland. i am american. i dont understand why people have to add stuff to that. if you were born in american and live in america now you are american. i could understand if you were born in mexico and then moved to america why you might call yourself mexican american but if that is not the case then why add extra labels. seems like being a homosexual man perez, you wouldn't like people to be labeling you. so why is it bad for her not to label herself as something she does not feel that connected to?

Im really sick of her hopefully his child speaks spanish!!!

  12. Eric says – reply to this

    812

My Grandfather did the same thing when left Mexico for the United States. But he was never ashamed of being Mexican, and he was never worried about not fitting in or having people like him. He always said "I'm in America now, they speak English in America, so that's what we're going to speak." Everyone in family is a proud, English-speaking American. I support Jessica Alba and the way she feels, even though she does not articulate it very well.

  13. Lindsey says – reply to this

    813

Perez, you're just misinterpreting everything written by a reporter that came from her mouth. So easy to do. You've got your reaction from the star herself, so let it go, and find someone else to hate on. Like Fergie or something.

I completely effing agree with her! Stop being such a fucken liberal and put on your big girl panties… THIS IS WHAT AMERICA IS ALL ABOUT!! I don't care HOW latino you are, senor, but being american is about ASSIMILATING, not bringing your country HERE *big losery emoticon*
Seriously, if you are so proud of your roots, why not go home???

people…GET OVER IT. she is a 3rd generation latina which means…SHE IS AMERICAN. for all you mexicans who are saying that she should be proud of her heritage and you're insulted…cry me a damn river. move to mexico if you want to be closer to the homeland you claim to love if you're so upset. jesus christ people. my grandparents were from greece, but i don't go around yapping about how i'm greek. i was born in america. i am AMERICAN. sure, i have greek heritage, but when it comes down to it…i don't go around talking about how i'm greek because a)i don't speak the language and b) have never set foot in the country. just because she doesn't go around shoving her heritage down other people's throats (ahem, perez and all you freakin phonies who were born here and want to be all about "your country") doesn't mean she's a bad person.

personally, i like her more since you despise her. you're a fool, perez. it'd be one thing if she grew up in mexico and was trying to hide it. she grew up here. the girl is a goddamn american. ain't nothing wrong with her being proud of that instead of trying to be something she's not.

GET OVER IT. and while you're at it, go fuck yourself, too. because you are a moron.

  19. d says – reply to this

    819

How ignorant does she sound? First of all, what did she cut loose from? She is still a descendent of Mexicans! It doesn't matter how long she resides in America, "American" is not a race.

I'm truly sorry that her grandparents were so ashamed of their roots, that they would deny them such a beautiful culture. Knowing a second language is not a handicap, has she any idea how many people would like to learn the language that did not have the opportunity when they were young. If anything her grandparents did her whole family a deservice by not teaching them the Spanish language.

Since I'm sure her grandparents are the kind of people that look down on their own, I wonder how they feel about their "American" grandaughter having a child out of wedlock.

  20. dee1 says – reply to this

    820

Bottom line: you have to fit into the culture you live in. Ethnicity is cool to a certain point. A very certain fine line. I once knew a guy whose parents were 1st gen mexican. He told me that while he was growing up his family would only speak english in the home. even the gparents. His family wanted him to succeed in life and knew that they had to assimilate to get ahead. They strived to be part of america - not change it. We Americans are doing just fine. Please keep your bs to a place we might visit on vacation.
Sorry if I offend. My ancestors have advanced a little more and we don't want to go back and do it again just so the minorities are on board this time. Again.

    825

I think she is being honest. I don't like her at all but if she doesn't feel Latina that's her issue, what about Cameron Diaz? I don't get why she doesn't get hated on. I think she's correct when she says she has no connection with the Latin spectrum because, she really doesn't, and that's not her fault it's more of her grandfather's fault for not being proud of his heritage. You can't hate her for that..just be hjappy she's not full of herself and calling herself Latina because she's really not, Michelle Rodriguez, Eva Mendez, and Jennifer Lopez are more latina than her. At least she knows she's not fooling anyone, the girl its very white wash and she knows that.

WHITES ARE "AMERICANS", WHITE PEOPLE COME FROM ALL DIFFERENT HERITAGES, RUSSIAN, GERMAN, ETC.

    SHE IS STUPID. STUPID, STUPID.

  29. Latina by Marriage says – reply to this

    829

That's a real shame she feels that way. I'm sure her grandfather did what he thought was best for him and his family to achieve the "American Dream." Perhaps, if he had not been so driven to assimilate she would be more proud of her culture and ancestry.

As a person of color who married another person of color, it's my vow not to have any episodes similar to the movie "Imitation of Life.' If you've never seen, check it out (the 30's original or the Sandra Dee version). I'm proud to American, Black and a Latina Marriage!

Nothing wrong with what she's saying here, Mario. You're an idiot as usual, and she's right. She wasn't raised steeped in latin culture and she's just honestly relaying that. Besides, there is not greater disgrace to latin culture than "Perez Hilton".

  35. jeff says – reply to this

    835

There's nothing wrong with that. She's not ashamed of being a latina, she simply can't categorize herself in a group where she knows anything about. She stated that no race accepted her. I know a lot of mexican americans who are disgraced by "true" mexicans because they were not born in Mexico. I know she's not the only one that feels that way. There are many black people who do not classify themselves as African American, and would preferably be called Black instead.

  36. TO THE PEOPLE WHO AGREE WITH HER says – reply to this

    836

If she were of black descent (or just bi-racial like Alicia Keys, Halle Berry, Barack Obama, etc.) and weren't claiming her race more people would be upset. Just becasue she looks white and can EASILY pass for it doesn't mean she should deny who she really is. Whether she realizes it or not, she is still hispanic, but also she is a US citizen. You can be an AMERICAN and still aknowledge the ethinicities that make up your true nationality.
America is a country; AMERICAN IS NOT A RACE. Someone needs to let her know that.

I feel for Jessica Alba b/c I know where she is coming from. I am Vietnamese but I also have French, Chinese, and Irish in me. Growing up, I never felt like I fit in anywhere. What's weird is that I get along with white people better than I get along with Vietnamese and other Asians. It makes you feel even weirder because you should be able to get along with your race but you don't.

  48. Dirk Diggler says – reply to this

    848

I'll NEVER go see one her movies ever again or even rent one. I can't believe somebody would say things like this. The last quote was the clincher, 'I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, but people don't call her Latina cuz she's blonde. This is just amazing. People should be proud of their heritage. I'm half Jamaican/half costa-rican and every opportunity I get, I try to plug that. It just seems like she hates herself. I cant' even say seem, she does.

  49. Paulie says – reply to this

    849

Sorry to all of you who don't get what Miss Alba is talking about… clearly you did not grow up in multi-racial/multi-ethnic homes and white neighborhoods. I understand her entirely because I feel the same way. My father is European and my mother Hispanic. I never "fit in" with Latinos, because my last name is French and I don't look entirely Hispanic, and my mother did not teach me Spanish. They're all surprised when I speak Spanish because I don't look Mexican/Central American and here in CA that is the predominant Latino population. I also don't fully "fit in" with whites because I don't look white (no blond hair or blue eyes), yet most of my friends if not all growing up were white. I am still the "undercover Latina" in my circle of friends, the odd girl out. To Hispanics I look more like white mixed with black, to whites I am just not white period. No one is really sure what I am… But I know I am me, proud to be an American! The only reason I feel some slight connection to my Spanish roots is because I speak Spanish (learned on my own), Miss Alba doesn't… which is why I understand her even more.

  51. Paulie says – reply to this

    851

For those of you who do not know because Perez never tells you… JESSICA'S MOTHER IS WHITE of European extraction… And I've noticed that Latinos are quick to accept famous people as their own, yet someone like me who is not famous is still not fully embraced by the Latino community. I bet Miss Alba felt rejected MANY years by the Latino community for being different before she was famous… now everyone wants her to say she is something she does not feel a part of and never did. How sad you can't see that Perez.

    854

    Perez,
your logic behind hating jessica alba is entirely lacking. i mean don't get me wrong, she's a no talent terrible excuse for an actress, but she's actually quite articulate when explaining her heritage and her experience as the granddaughter of an immigrant who sought complete assimilation for his family (which, in her grandparents time, was a common strategy). I was trying to figure out the logic you were using in hating her and then I stumbled across another poster who mentioned the paris hilton thing, and it all made sense. So go ahead and push your agenda perez and tell yourself you're doing something good for the latino (and gay) communties. but you're really just a lackluster, horribly self-righteous wannabe celebretard. but you do damn good coverage, so i'll keep reading (but always with a healthy HEALTHY sized grain of salt).

Stupid people like Perez tend to get bitchy when they dont understand what others are saying. On the contrary, Jessica Alba seems to be well spoken and backs up her thoughts with her actual reasons. When somebody is ethnically mixed, why is it bad that she is honest about not feeling connected to her latina heritage?

We don't speak Italian. We aren't familiar with the European Italian way of life. We're AMERICANS with an Italian heritage we aren't closely tied to yet…because of our name people try to pidgeon hole us into the whole Soprano's type, bada bing Italian thing. 3 generations ago the Italians we're looked down upon as dirty and unwelcome. Our great grandparents tried to assimilate and therefore their kids and grandkids became more "American" than anything else. Yeah - when people call me "Italian" it's weird…it's my heritage, but I was raised AMERICAN and not Italian. I think that's all she's saying. She may not have said it "right" all of the time, but I think it is where she's coming from.

I'm half spanish, not mexican, but I want to say how sad I think it is that mexican's here on this board are bashing her instead of supporting her.

She never said she was ashamed of her heritage, just that she wasn't raised with mexican traditions or taught spanish growing up.

This is America. My parents both spoke english. My sister and I speak only english.

It's like if I decided to love to Italy and live there. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." I would learn Italian and speak it because that is their culture.

I believe that this country is a melting pot, not a tossed salad. If you don't like living in America and speaking English, then move back to your motherland.

What's your point Perez? She's speaking her mind and you don't like it, you judge it because it does not make you happy. Get over it, people have a right to say what they want… she sounds sincere to me.

In her defense, it hasn't been uncommon over the years for 1st and 2nd generation Americans to raise their families in a way that blends into WASPy America, in an attempt to avoid the horrible racism they or their parents may have had to endure. Usually though, 3 or 4 gens in, you see children claiming their heritage. I ain't saying it's right, I'm saying look at the patterns. That said, VIVA!!

You're putting her down for this shows that you're more insecure with your heritage than anything.

Why do you need everyone to LOVE being latin? Is it some sort of reinforcement thing? If everyone loves it, it must be okay?
Her background, as she knows it, is American. Is that wrong?
If everyone isn't in love with being Latin, does it make you feel insecure?

If you want to blame anyone, you could possibly blame her parents, but to blame her for any of this when she didn't grow up around it would be childish.

    884

People still doesn't get it. Perez doesn't like her because she supposedly "cut loose" from her Mexican heritage, (that must be a first in genetics). Is the way she said it. She quotes Cameron Diaz, who every fan of her knows that she is Cuban descendant just for her last name and because she doesn't deny it. The way she puts it is by saying that She never spoke Spanish growing up, unlike Jessica who sounds like she is considering her self very fortunate to not to speak a second language. Unlike Europe where is normal to know more than one, here in the States knowing other language makes you look less American to some.

I understand what Jessica Alba is trying to say in the quotes that were posted. I too am a Mexican American and I am 3rd or 4th generation born in the states. I think its hard if you were not brought up speaking your native language (spanish) because Mexican's think you are white washed, and White people think you are just another brown person. You are not sure where you fit in. I am very proud to be both Mexican and American I embrace each culture and it has shaped who I am. Jessica Alba does seem a bit ashamed of who she is, but you cant really blame her because thats what she was taught all her life. I think before you judge anyone you should just try to understand where they are coming from. Maybe give this girl a break and who knows maybe one day she will learn to be proud of her Mexican roots.

    Re: jessi
You are more of a tool than he is. She is not ashamed of it, if you actually read the quote, she's just talking about her upbringing. She knows its in her blood, but she was never raised that way. She didn't celebrate the traditions or speak the language. GET OVER YOURSELF. READ and THINK for yourself, no matter how hard it may be for you. using the word "brown power" just shows how intolerant, prejudice, and stupid you are

Honestly I don't really care for Jessica Alba BUT I COMPLETELY understand what she is saying. I am 7th generation mix of Spanish and Mexican and who knows what else…we lost track lol. Apparently that's a Crazy concept for some people to understand. NOT all "brown" looking people can speak spanish, were born in Mexico, or still have family in Mexico and aren't college educated. I confuse people all the time because I look Mexican but don’t speak Spanish and don’t have any kids at the age of 26. I’m stereotyped multiple times everyday. It doesn't upset me and I don't feel "racially profiled" but it does get annoying. There are a lot of people who are like JA and her family. What’s wrong with embracing the country you and your great grandparents were born in and raised a family in? I’m from New Mexico and everyone of my hispanic friends (yeah I know hispanic blah, blah, blah… don’t give me crap for saying that that’s what a lot of people choose to say) are just like JA, same type of situation and it’s normal. People who live in LA need to step out of the box and check out another culture here within the US.

Damn! Perez! Thanks for giving me the history. I am not sure where this beatch was raised….but I have always been very proud of my roots. I am first generation Hispanic..my parents were born in Mexico…their grandparents in Spain. My father, grandmother, brother etc..have blue and green eyes. There is discrimination in California, or everywhere in this world..but I have always been proud of my heritage..I speak two languages and my friends are always amazed..speaking two or more languages always makes you smarter than your regular person..it's a shame not speak your own language. I tend to forget things but if I have to I educate myself by watching the spanish channels so I don't forget it. I had friends that wanted to be hispanic and envied the tanner look. I am not sure where she was raised! I really don't like her sorry ass now! I would be ashamed of my grandfather's decision…living in a fake world…we must be chameleon's in this world..put me in any environment and I can turn it on! She would have a larger fan base if she could work it!

i love your sight and go to it constantly, your hilarious. i always wonderred why you called alba dont-call-me-latina but now after reading that i understand. but i do get why jessica feels that way. i know she's said before her spanish is poor and in that article she says shes american not so much latina (also because shes the third genereation born in america, still with a latin heritage). i was born in canada as well as 9 past generations so i consider myself canadian, not german, english or irish as my past many grand-greand parents were. does jessica have a hate with latins, probably not but why have a hate for her just because she dosnt personally consider herself latin but american??

Why not just change your last name if you dont want to be considered Latina, why keep the last name. Love ya Perez!
