Mayer Does Timberlake

Filed under: Justin Timberlake > John Mayer

John Mayer just uploaded THIS to his YouTube account.

He took to his guitar for an interpretation of the I Think She Knows/Lovestones interlude by Justin Timberlake.

It's kinda amazing. He's able to use his guitar rhythmically and as a bass simultaneously, if that makes any sense.

Ch-ch-check it out!

i'm so high right now perez, and i just wanted to thank you for giving me an enjoyable 2 minutes while i eat my buttered peas.

  2. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW says – reply to this

    102

ok, perez idiot. there is mos def someone in the background playing the bass line. can't you watch his fingers and understand that? tool.

  3. Anonymoose says – reply to this

    103

He has to be using a looping pedal to keep the bassline going while he's busting out that solo. It's not possible to do it otherwise. So he's not as "amazing" as he seems in that context.

    Kind of cool, I guess.

that sounds beautiful…what a good job

    106

He is actually not playing both at the same time. He records the first part and plays it back as the bass line to then play the top notes. It works really well and he sounds amazing. He is really a talented musician, regardless of anything else. Thanks for showcasing this!!

    107

Yup…it's a loop. It's the way of the future. Love it!! Thanks for sharing, Perez

I think it's really sad that sometimes boys can do things that are beautiful and important, but ultimately . . . they're still boys. and they can still be typical. they can still be irresponsible and immature . . . it just feels like a waste. every time i hear something beautiful by john mayer i think of when he came to play at my college and the rumors about what happened there. You can write, you can play, but at the end of the day, you're just another typical guy.

    111

If you look closely you'll see he's not playing the bass at all, just the rythym. He probably did the bass beforehand and then dubbed it over. I've seen it done with other stuff too.

    120

It does make sense what you're saying. He's using an effects peddle. It allows you to record a part of what you're playing and repeat it over and over again so you can play over yourself. Its a common guitar thing guitar players can use sometimes. Still good stuff though.

  21. Kris says – reply to this

    121

WOW! That was amazing!! LOVE YOU JOHN! He is the best guitar player EVER!!!! ROCK ON JOHN!!

  24. Hayleymo says – reply to this

    124

It's an recorder. KT Tundstall uses the same thing for black horse and a cherry tree. imogene heap uses it too. He can record the bass line the press a button and it will play while he's recording another part and so on! They are pretty cool.

  25. Ingrid says – reply to this

    125

Yeah, I noticed that…it's really not that incredible (to me at least). He just loops the background while he repeat the same lick over and over basically……bleh. I've seen far more amazing guitarists play in unknown bands. Re: sean

  26. chel says – reply to this

    126

he is a dream! FUCKING PERFECT!!!!

  27. I don't believe it says – reply to this

    127

Ditto #99 he his not playing both parts, its a loop. "He's able to use his guitar rhythmically and as a bass simultaneously, if that makes any sense." No Perez. KT Tunstall - Black Horse And The Cherry Tree, she does this live and loops several parts, its amazing. She makes Mayer look like little girl.

  28. aaahhhh says – reply to this

    133

    - John Mayer was aweosme untill his ego arrived about two years ago.
    - I wish he recorded his face too so I could laugh at his stupid expressions that makes his guitar playing look impossible, but really it's simple
    - Justin Timberlake sucks and so does "his music"
    - I think someone already mentioned this but he isn't playing it all at the same time…it's pre-recorded and looping…its not simultaniously…at all. Feist does this alot with her vocals….not really the same thing though becasue she is amazing and Mayer is shit.
    - ohh Mayer you weren't so resiculous when you wrote the song "3×5"….what happened to your real music

  41. missmay says – reply to this

    141

oy perez! music 101 - looping.

  42. Alyson says – reply to this

    142

okay… he's not using his guitar rhythmically and as a bass at the same time… after the first four bars he clicks a button with his foot (you can see him do it) that keeps what he just played going over and over again in the background while he's playing the melody. if you know anything about music (and have eyes and can see his hands moving) it is quite obvious that the caption is wrong and that he is absolutely not using his guitar rhythmically and as a bass simultaneously… that would be completely impossible… even for john mayer.

  43. Maura says – reply to this

    143

This blog entry is wrong. He looped the bass, meaning recorded it with a pedal, then played it back while soloing over it. Not saying he isn't an amazing guitarist, but its not as hard as it looked.

  44. cck says – reply to this

    144

on his myspace page( via chicago red eye) mayer said how he loved timberlakes lovestoned interlude and how its complete sonic bliss… i loved it cause i love the song.. and john does as well- what he did is now bliss!

  45. Oh! Britney! says – reply to this

    145

He prolly just taped himself playing bass, then played his guitar over the recording. My sister used to do it with her two (alto and soprano) recorders. Nerdy! LOL! RAWR! Love you Perezites!

  46. BillyBob says – reply to this

    146

"It's kinda amazing. He's able to use his guitar rhythmically and as a bass simultaneously, if that makes any sense." No it doesn't make any sense. Like everyone else has said its a Line 6, looping what ever part he wants and KT Tunstall??? Are you fucking kidding me??? Try Howie Day, a man who doesn't get enough credit for great music and the use of his Line 6…And by the way, Perez, maybe if you were musically inclined, instead of Hollywood inclined, you would know this…I mean seriously dude, do you just update this blog all day long!? In the words of McLovin, "READ A FUCKING BOOK!" By the way, Mayer rocks and everyone needs to be sucking on his ball sac for hatin!

  47. whatever says – reply to this

    147

Okay, Perez. It's a good thing you aren't a forensic scientist. Watch when he begins to solo. Clearly, he's only soloing and there is someone else playing the rythym or it is just a track. He's probably just pretending to play the rythym at the beginning.

  48. whatever says – reply to this

    148

Forgot to mention….there is NO bass in this video. Only a rythym and lead guitar. Clean out your ears with some q-tips.

  56. lol says – reply to this

    156

you fuckin retard, he is using a backing track and soloing over it, guitar players do it all the time.
he isn't playing rythym and lead at the same time.

  57. ok says – reply to this

    157

im pretty sure he's using a pedal to get the "bass" clef, im not good with the theory side of music but that;s wat it sounds like to me. Baking track maybe? Jon Mayer is a good guitarist though.

  60. beatrize says – reply to this

    160

ooo its great! but he's actually using some machine thingy that you press with your foot and whatever you played will loop. which reminds me.. i want one of those!!

  61. andreatheamazing says – reply to this

    161

*sigh* That was great. I have seen him in concert over 5 times–and I mean if you think that was great YOU NEED TO SEE HIM PREFORM LIVE. And yes you able to hear a bass like sound while he is playing but it's a program that allowes you to record, then loop through out the song. Imogen Heap actually has a great vid on youtube–check it out! it's called JUST FOR NOW..

    ok i love you john!

  62. andreatheamazing says – reply to this

    162

yeah you are right WHERE ARE THE TAT'S??

  63. ena says – reply to this

    163

he actually just used a boomerang pedal to loop the baseline. he says so in the "about this video" section. it's pretty common, some people even do it with their voice to create an entire a cappella song with just one person (usually done live).

  64. ena says – reply to this

    164

p.s. mandolin players can actually do this without a recorder or a loop back player. look it up on youtube, it's actually pretty amazing. it almost sounds like they're playing 2 sometimes 3 guitars at once.

  65. TheKeri.com says – reply to this

    165

    Wow.
You have to admit that is pretty awesome. :D

  66. tuss says – reply to this

some of you people are tarded. hes using a loop. i wish he wouldnt be such a homo and would drop the pop bullshit like he did for a minute. hes actually a really exceptional guitar player.

  67. ian says – reply to this

    167

it's a delay pedal. he's not leo kotke for christ's sake. and kudos to the guy who said he sounded like eric johnson. it really does sound like eric johnson. but it IS cool. and i like john mayer. so there you bitches.

  68. English bird in a band says – reply to this

    168

Re: Rodeo – it's not a backing track fool, if you watch the beginning again you will see him play the bass line, he's recording it on to his foot pedal and then playing it back on a loop to play over the top. It's simple but effective.

  69. a says – reply to this

    169

he's not playing both parts at once, and that is quite obvious if you just look. Even he would admit that he's not that good.

its not John Mayer - no tat on his arm

  71. Jimmy says – reply to this

    171

Stylewise, he's massively taking from classic Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler should be PISSED, uh, I mean flattered.

  74. Mike says – reply to this

    174

People hate on John Mayer, but the guy can play. I saw him on Austin City Limits with Buddy Guy a few years ago, before he released Continuum. Wow. He has chops. Big time. But I think he kind of screwed himself by releasing the music he did first. Yes, it got him exposure and money but it cost him cred. Now he's trying to overcome "Your Body Is a Wonderland".

    181

he's using a sampler pedal to sample the rhythm guitar he plays in the beginning of the video. he then proceeds to play solo licks on top of his sampled rhythm guitar. he's a great player alright, but i'm afraid he's not capable of playing both rhythm and lead at the same time. nobody can do that, you'd need four arms and two brains.

  91. lulu says – reply to this

    191

First of all he isn' playing a bass line simultaneously as well as comping on the guitar. He's using a looper machine. You play a few seconds then it records and plays the sample over and over… a looper. By far not a genius! Many musicians use it! Its an amazing little machine.

  92. kayla says – reply to this

    192

FYI if you look at his hands the bass is a separate track that he is playing over. listen carefully before you cum your pants next time!
