American Idol returned to TV on Tuesday with its worst premiere in four years.
Last night's ratings were down 13% from last year and down 10% from 2006.
Idol's not dead dead. It was still the most watched show on television Tuesday night. However, the decline in viewership does not bode well for the aging show.

maybe my math is a bit off…but how does a show die when 33 million viewers tune in??
hey , well i didn't read the comments but that girl on last night that was 16 and a middle linebacker with a ill mother , OMG , that was sooooo sad ! and that crazy girl that was like ” simon , if i could legally moon you on television , I WOULD ! ” hahaha
If you read the article, the ratings went down, but only by 10-13% (depending on how you look at it). Part of the reason for that may be that the Michigan primary was also on last night. Just saying…

I LOVED IT! I look forward to it every year. Was glad that they showed more of the people who got the golden tickets instead of all the jokes they usually show. It looks like they are getting more into the contestants and their stories which is awesome. Last year was the worst and I hope it turns around this year. SO FAR SO GOOD!! God I missed Simon !!
Idol is NOT dead…there have been a lot of successful artists that got their start on this show. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks (who's new cd is actually quite good)…i love this show and hope it sticks around!!!

I watch the auditions, then quit watching after that. They're the only thing worth watching due to the fact that they're so pathetic it's hilarious. The actual competition is boring as hell.
Maybe it's because with the writers strike people have stopped watching so much t.v.! Maybe people are actually finding something else to do besides sit on their fat asses getting fatter and more stupid!

I totally agree. i am a huge idol fan…but last night sucked. There were a few highlights. Like the 16 year old who did it for her mom causing the judges to go out and visit her. Also the Paula stalker guy…I hope to god she got an arrest warrent put against him…hopefully tonight will be better!
I watched it and I was pleased to see that it had improved. They were not quite so rude to the talentless. I liked the way they let us get to know a few of the contestants.

i am so sick of watching long dramas they make up over the bad people. I fast forwarded through all the crap auditions. I really wish they could just focus on the great exciting people. i loved ai but the show doesnt pick people who should be picked. my cousin has an awesome voice and she didnt get picked to go in front of randy/paula/simon, but she saw a TON of people dressed up in crazy outfits go thu. like the fat guy who got his chest waxed. so staged.

i watched it. it was pretty good. there was one scene where paula was so drunk she was slurring and couldn't complete a sentence. i have a feeling that is very tiring and irritating for simon.

i still love idol, last nights episode was ok, it was kind of sad though. id rather see bad auditions than a bunch of people crying. and that guy with the stalker song waswas the best part.

I have been OVER American Idol for years. Real musician should go back to singing and playing in your local clubs instead of entering a TV show. I guess its like the new age Star Search but I am over it. It wasn't even that funny last night and the judges are so mean to some of those people. None of the judges are awesome singers anyway. Paula is a better dancer than singer. Randy is a musician/producer not a singer ….and what does Simon do other than tell the truth to some of those contestants. Reality TV is going to take over as long as this writers strike continues….so watch on (thumbs down)

Haha okay, why do some of you care so much?? If you hate the show, DON'T WATCH IT! This is America and since Idol they've been coming up with just about every imaginable show possible to air and hopefully get ratings. You name it, there's a show about it. It's disgusting and ridiculous. Unless you're poor and can't afford decent cable or satellite, TURN TO THE HUNDREDS OF OTHER CHANNELS AVAILABLE, and don't watch Idol! Sitting around bitching isn't going to do much, and writing 'comments' to the Idol producers thinking they're going to see it is absolutely pathetic! Shouldn't you high schoolers be in school right now?
I think the ratings were probably down because it went head to head with the NV Democratic debate, and the MI primary results.
This is a big election season, and it was hard for idol to compete.

I saw the show last night and I was really not impressed at all. But I am waiting for the season to get done so that they can flash back to all the crazy people who thought they could sing and try to play deaf and dumb and continue on a rant about how the show does not accept diversity, yeah Princess Leah, I am talking about her EMO BUTT and Waxed Leah gosh his gut was proof enough that in Philly it is more than Cheese stake sandwiches that he eats, could have sworn he could have popped out an um-pa loom-pa!! And let us not forget the Psycho who was stuck in the Rock scene of the 80s, that girl will not make it in hollywood at all, with her raging attitude she should hook up with Britney and party hard!! actually, depending on the market, it's done really well in some places. it actually did better (by far) in some markets than it did last year. plus, it didn't just win the night, it killed it.
I didn't watch because the HD cable signal was horrible- I tried to watch, but I couldn't. Audio kept cutting in and out and picture was all pixilated. But that was just me here in NYC- maybe that had something to do with it?? I plan on watching tonight is SD and not HD.

i am over them showing the bad people jsut start the competition at the top. These people dont truly think they are good, they just want to be on tv, in fact, i have friends myself that are doing it for that reason. So while we are laughing at them, its really them that have the last laugh because they got on tv and did what they came to do. The show needs an update, i mean its great, i love listening to the people sing and they are talented, but lets get rid of the auditions and just start with the best. Daughtry and jennifer hudson, althought not winners, have been very successful as well.
why do we care? let's count how many "winners" have been dumped by their labels? Studdard, Hicks, etc. AND how many more have just faded into obscurity and have not added any talent in any shape or form? Plenty! It's tragic, I tell you. Let's hope this is the ending of reality TV.
