The Directors Reach A Deal!!!

Very very promising news that the writers strike may be over soon!
The Directors Guild quietly began negotiating with the AMPTP, aka the big media companies, just this month. And they've already reached a deal, it was announced on Thursday. It took them just six days of negotiating.
The writers, on the other hand, have been on strike since November 5th and talks between them and the producers reached a standstill in early December.
Both the writers and the directors were fighting for the same issues (Internet and DVD royalties). Now that the DGA has been able to reach a deal, hopefully the Writers Guild can use that as a blueprint for their own deal.
Big Media has to step up to the plate and begin the talks again, and together the writers and producers need to bring this ugly chapter in Hollywood to a close.

Perez, either you are very naive, misinformed, or dumb. Directors are not writers and vice-versa. Historically, the director's guild get their deals done quickly because they carry a lot more power than the writers. Do you honestly think the writers will have a shot at getting the same type of deals that the directors just got? Do your homework, my well-meaning, yet tragically dumb dumb-dumb.

What funride71 said. The WGA and DGA are not buddies. Part of why the producers were not negotiating with the WGA is because they hoped to use a DGA deal against them. They got exactly what they wanted.
Hopefully the writers will remember they're all on the same side. They're being pissy with each other.

3. Generally SUCK at writing. (try to remember the last movie or television show that had memorably good writing… Perhaps ONE or TWO movies a year– and a handful of shows on HBO and Showtime?).
4. A LONG fucking time before they will have their SAME shitty (300K per year) jobs back.

What this says to me is that the people heading the negotiations for the WGA don't have a fucking clue! Obviously the big scary boogie-men who run the networks ARE capable of negotiating - so what does that mean? The heads of the WGA are the ones dragging their feet - hoping to get the public on their side so that they can get everything they want & not have to budge an inch - that IS NOT NEGOTIATING!

its up to the writers to make a deal. they quit, they walked out. if they want to work again, they need to ask for negotiations.
This actually isn't good news for the writers, P. The DGA has always had a cozy relationship with the producers and studios — the two sides are essentially the same. And directors have always gotten better benefits over the writers, even on productions that the directors themselves never wrote. If you actually believe that this means that the producers/studios will give the writers the same deal as they did the producers, then you're way beyond naive, kid. The DGA sold out the WGA.
It's really up to the actors (the SAG). Will they show support for the writers, or sell them out, too? (Prediction: They will sell out the writers.)
Thank goodness. Let's hope this is true because this has seriously been a waste of our precious time. Why am I paying so much for cable channels at this point? And not being able to see Johnny Depp receive his Best Actor award at the Golden Globes? A shame! Thank goodness we have the Oscars to look forward to. Another thought…Unions are kind of scary. Yes, striking puts a lot of people out of work, but the people who are striking are out of work too. Ever think of that? No work = no money for the "greedy" writers as well. Even they risk losing their homes, etc. if this last. They obviously don't want that either. This rant is too long as it is so I will end with this… EDUCATE YOURSELVES. Don't comment blindly on an issue you only know one side of or what your mother's brother's uncle tells you.
As for some of the other issues being discussed on this thread… if you want to comment at least educate yourselves on the issues. This strike is NOT about greed. There are valid issues in discussion. And to be on strike takes courage not cowardice. Bravo to the directors for striking a deal, however, this does not mean that anyone benefits from this other than the directors who already get paid their dues.

Well, friend… keep in mind that writers are generally not the people who get the shows on the air or movies in the theatres nor are they generally the ones that keep them on the air or in the theatres. The people who do that are the people with money and power like executives of production companies, big business, etc… You as a viewer are one of the people who keeps a show on the air or helps boost a movie's box office sales.
My point is shitty writing does not mean the writers are necessarily shitty. If you want to make ignorant assumptions like that why don't we venture to say writing is shitty because people like shitty entertainment. Not because the writers cannot writer quality material.

Writers would have a better chance at getting royalties if they negotiated seperately. If you write for a shitty show that doesn't sell dvd's or get downloaded much… you prob shouldn't be getting the same deal as someone who writes for heroes etc. GG to Unions… protecting the lazy and those of the suck since worker saftey become almost a non-issue.

I think I'm one rare person that actually likes the strike. It's given me a reason to go about my business doing other things. I've lost interest in the many shows I used to like. I don't know if I want the temptation to be there.
Conan's back on and that's really all that ever mattered to me. That guy could carry that show on his own if he wanted to.
The writers ARE WORKING!!!!! I was in the post office in Sherman Oaks, CA on Friday and overheard a writer on the phone (yes I was eavesdropping). He was talking to another writer and he was discussing the fact that himself and SEVERAL OTHER WRITERS are all working for Cartoon Network!!! So while those of us pee-ons that have set jobs are completely out of work until they "settle" things they are not only receiving risiduals from past work, but being paid WEEKLY by working for non-SAG projects.
TALK ABOUT BULLSH*T.
Who cares about the writers. They have been turning out trash for years and are the real reason the entire industry is in the dumpster. Fire them all and get new ones.
