The 15th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, ratified in 1870, prohibits federal or state governments from infringing on a citizen's right to vote "on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." While this ammendment made it possible for any man of any color, race, etc. to vote (including the African-American ones), it did not apply to women. Sure, some racists did all they could to prevent their fellow citizens of minorities to vote, it was not legal for them to do so.
MUCH, MUCH LATER….on Aug. 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment granted the ballot to American women. This also took years for men to accept and stop attempting to prevent…..

Actually Elizabeth was correct. Black men were Constitutionally given the right to vote before women. However states put in place Jim Crow laws which made it nigh impossible for black men to vote but they did indeed have the right to vote before women.

Perhaps the right to vote was not reflected in actual ability to vote in the south but still it was in the constitution way before the rights were secured for women.

Actually according to the 15th Ammendment which was passed on 03/30/1870 all citizens could vote regardless of race (at that point women were not citizens) Women were not granted the right to vote until 08/20/1920

Actually Whoopi is wrong - 15th Amendment allowed black men to vote in 1870 (not to be forgotten unjust southern state laws making intelligence test mandatory until the Voting Right Act of 1965). Women didn't get the right to vote until the Nineteenth Amendment was enacted in 1920.
Perhaps Whoopi's point was that she was a black women had the most difficult time, which no one would disagree with or that blacks did REALLY have the freedom to vote until 1965.

I thought that African americans were afforded the right to vote before women. Women's suffrage didn't come about until 1920 and I was under the impression that black men recieved the right to vote in 1870 when they ratified the Fifteenth Amendment…

The 15th Amendment of the Constitution allowed "universal" suffrage among men, but following that, several states changed their constitutions to include poll taxes, grandfather clauses, and literacy tests, all design to disenfranchise black male voters. Women didn't get the right until the 19th Amendment was passed. Black people got the right again in 1965, when it was decided that the manuevers some states had used to avoid giving black men suffrage were unconstitutional.
Elizabeth was right… Blacks were granted the right the vote during Reconstruction…in the 15th amendment… Women were granted the right to vote in the 1920's in the 20 something amendment. Blacks were not allowed to vote in some areas due to Jim Crow but during Reconstruction there was a large number of black mayors, governors, senators, representatives, etc.

In 1865, following the Civil War, African-Americans were given the right to vote and the "3/5ths clause" was rescinded. (14th and 15th Amendment). The clause relevant to your question is the 15th Amendment, article 1: "The right… to vote shall not be denied or abridged… on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." (the "previous condition of servitude" meant that states couldn't deny the right to vote to those who had been slaves).
Women! Did not receive the right to vote until 1920.

Another thing I'll mention is we had black judges a while before women got the right to vote. That sort of gives it away that blacks were voters prior to women.
After slaves were freed, all black men were given the right to vote according to the Constitution. But in reality, very few Blacks were able to vote. It is the 15th & 16th Amendment of the constitution. But legal, yes they were and cause quite the upheavel for 20 yrs. after the Civil War (1864) exercising that right and putting black men in local, county, state and federal office. Women got the vote in 1920 (19th Amendment). Elizabeth is correct on this one.
