Whether or not it was "taken away" (which, technically, Jim Crow laws just made it impossible for blacks to vote, not "take away" their votes) doesn't change the fact that the black vote came before the women's vote. "Elizabitch" was correct. The 15th Amendment gave black men the right to vote, the 19th Amendment extended that right to women. Even though there were certain restrictions put in place to inhibit black voting, they most certainly had the right first. Check your facts next time.

Black men were allowed to vote before women. However, most states declared you most own land to vote. Since it was impossible for blacks to own land, they therefore could not vote as well as other stituates placed before them such as poll taxes. Of course this was all done to prevent blacks from voting even though constitutionaly they were allowed to do so. Women's sufferage was after the fact.
Actually, Elizabeth had it right. Racial Suffrage was the 15th amendment and was put in action in 1870, then it was Women's Suffrage which is the 18th amendment and was put in action in 1920.

As others have said, Whoopi was wrong. Technically, black men were able to vote long before women of either race. But yeah, there were a lot of Jim Crow laws, literacy tests, poll taxes, etc. that made it difficult and even impossible for blacks to vote in many states, especially in the south. Women didn't face as many roadblocks once given the right to vote in the 1920's (I think?).

Why do we always look at the South for whether or not blacks could vote? Blacks were given the vote after the Civil War, and while the south tried to limit them voting, I don't think the north did. Besides, in terms of legislation, Blacks were given the vote before Women. I think that's the basic issue at the heart of this discussion, showing the Whoppi was wrong and Elizabeth was surprisingly right. (Or are blacks not allowed to be wrong? Maybe we should rewrite history so that Whoppi is right).

Women on the other hand gained the right to vote in 1920 with the 19th amendment. Somewhere I had read that women would have gained the right sooner, had not so many turned up to vote.
It would be interesting to know how many blacks actually took the risk of harm in order to vote before the 1960's.

TECHNICALLY they are both right. African Americans were first allowed to vote in 1865. However until the Civil Rights movement, states passed laws that blocked many African Americans from being able to vote — so as African Americans were technically allowed to vote — it wasn't until the Civil Rights Movement when they actually took to the polls and all of the restrictions were removed. Women were able to vote in 1920.

I can't stand Hasselbeck but seriously, has no one read the Constitution?! The 15th Amendment was passed a full 50 years before the 19th Amendment. This isn't to say that different states didn't do what they could to try and block black men from voting but it was not sanctioned by the Constitution.

I'm shocked that this isn't common knowledge. It's said that so few people are familiar with our Constitution. The 15th Amendment gave black men the right to vote. That was passed immediately following the Civil War, along with abolishment of slavery. Suffrage for women did not come until 1920 (the 19th Amendment). And this was after a nearly 75 year fight that began with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton at the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention. Congress finally conceded after some extremely embarrassing incidents occurred in which women suffragists were jailed under horrible conditions and went on hunger strikes. It's a point in history that is very frequently overlooked. I didn't realize the full extent to which women had to fight for this basic right until I got to college. Many people will never know.
Contrary to what I read a couple people say, the right to vote for blacks was never actually taken away, but many Southern states made it very difficult for them to vote by passing poll taxes, voting tests, etc. This was done away with in 1965 with the Voting Rights Act.
I am completely appalled at Americans' lack of knowledge on basic and extremely important historical events — especially when I hear this ignorance coming from someone educated like Whoopi Goldberg. She should know better.

The Civil Rights Act of 1875: The law was generally ineffective and not enforced. The withdrawal of Federal troops from the South caused it to only be enforced rarely by some federal officers and some private citizens.
The Act was challenged and brought to the Supreme Court in 1883. The Act was found unconstitutional on the basis that the Act regulated actions of private companies rather than actions of the state governments.
Many of the provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1875 were passed into law in the 1960s with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Fair Housing Act using the federal power to regulate interstate commerce.
Women could freely vote after 1920, whil blacks could not "Freely" vote until 1965.
