Elisabeth Hasselbeck Needs To Go Back To High School!

Sheri must be real happy Elizabitch is back on The View.

On Monday's episode, Hasselbeck had a hard time remembering who was granted the right to vote first - women or people of color.

Thankfully, Whoopi put her in her place.

Click here to check it out!

P.S. Rosie must be laughing her ass off…in a very ANNOYING way.

Update: Whoopi was wrong?

Maybe we all could use a little history lesson!

I love how quickly a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon and "agreed" that she was dumb and "needed to go back to school", yet they were wrong too. Hilarious! Made me laugh. Those of you who did that look like little perez puppets. Lame. And Perez, I normally love you but this was the first time you really truly looked like a dumbass.

Black men were given the right to vote after the civil war and women were given the right in the 1920's however, due to racism many blacks were not allowed to vote period. It wasn't until the CIVIL RIGHTS ACT in the 1960's that municipalities had to allow everyone to vote.

Thank you Suzy Q! It's hard for a black woman in the man's world. And I mean ALL men not just a white man's world. At the end of the day men live by the adage, "Bros before hoes." The good ole boys club is alive and kicking.

While I don't like Elisabeth, and I do like Whoopi, I'm fairly certain that the 13th Amendment came before the 19th Amendment.

I wish people would all stop with the complaining and move on already. Historically, most people have been discriminated against one way or another. My ancestors were burned in ovens. We are all of the same race, HUMAN.

    409

you all are soo stupid. 13th amendment gave blacks the right vote (black men that is) and the 19th gave women the right to vote. Liz was right. Whoopi needs to read up on black history.

  10. ronpaul says – reply to this

    410

I mean thats awesome that WHOOPI was wrong and not Elisabeth. African-Americans gained suffrage with the 14th amendment which extended all rights of citizens to slaves. The 19th amendment, ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote. Unless Whoopi is refering the the outlawing of poll taxes, literacy tests, and grandfather clauses, granted by the 24th amendment, then she is right.

  11. Paige says – reply to this

Whoopi Goldberg is an idiot, blacks got the right to vote with the 15th amendment, women got the right to vote with the 19th… Maybe Whoopi should take her higher than thou attitude back to highschool

    412

Please, don't any of you vote. Better yet don't come out of the house, ever. Aside from the stupid racist comments by the majority of rednecks here, the lack of knowledge makes it clear that perhaps the vote to only be given to those who can pass a basic American History test. So, the only conclusion one can draw is that there are very few people who should be allowed in the voting booths at all!

    The 15th Amendment ratified 1870
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

The 19th Amendment ratified 1920The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

    417

    Come on you guys.

Jim Crow laws were in the SOUTH. Remember in school we heard the seperate but equal garbage preached by the south? That was the Jim Crow laws.

They were NOT repealed by the Civil Right Act either.

They were found uncostitutional by the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia.

  18. KT says – reply to this

    418

Black men were given the right to vote after the Civil war, well before women, however Grandfather clauses, literacy tests and other rules and a poll tax prevented black men from voting well into the 60's with the passing of the Voting Rights act.

That is the short history lesson of the day!

YES Whoopi was wrong. And YES Hasslebitch is an idiot for not standing her ground. Why are celebrities almost always stupid and uneducated? And why must they continue to talk about things as if they ARE intelligent or as if they have any general information from which to base their opinions? When one has that kind of money at their disposal, to not use it to better and educate yourself makes you a waste of space. If one has the opportunity to attend college and doesn't take it, I think you suck. At life.

It's terribly sad when blacks say there's still so much racism and they are held back bkz of it. Everything they need to make a wonderful life is already theirs, if they could focus on something other than self pity for a moment. When Africans emigrate to the US they cannot believe how backward American blacks are. They know what REAL oppression is and see the multitude of opportunities that American blacks throw away with both hands.

Or at least hire a moderator who can remove offensive posts. I really like your site, but I will stop visiting if every time I read the comments I am bombarded by RACIST, SEXIST and overall demeaning comments. This is not about freedom of speech but more about a group of angry losers who feel brave when sitting behind their computer screens. If these a**holes want to post racist comments make them go somewhere else. Please, I could even be your moderator. I am so tired of angry people, saying evil things and insulting my people whenever they get the chance.

Please—from one person of color to another. Let's help stop the madness.

Oh and comaboy, you really need to get a life or move someplace where there are no people of color. Good luck with that and good luck with your life…loser.

    422

Wow that just goes to show how racist our country still is. The notion of having a woman or a black man as president really scares the hell out of some people. All I know is either Hillary or Obama could do a whole hell of a better job than our current president. The sad part is we are going get another republican elected president because people cannot get over their predujices. Think about it, on election day when there is a choice of say McCain and Hillary or McCain and Obama many people jump ship and vote for the white guy. Sadly, I don't Hillary or Obama are electable so people should start supporting John Edwards unless they want another republican president.

Black men were given the right to vote in 1870. But many efforts were made to restrict him of the right to vote. It was not until 1965, during the Civil Rights movement, that black men and women were given the right to vote and all the previous restrictions were considered unlawful. Women were given the right to vote in 1920. And as part of their argument to have the right to vote they said things like, shouldn't we be given the right to vote before black people? Aren't we worth more then they are? I would agree with Whoopi, that white women were given the right to vote before black people were. The law was there, allowing black men to vote, but the white men (as usual) did everything he could to stop black male equality. Let's just blame it on the white male because it's ALWAYS his fault!!!

For christ sakes perez, and whoopi and the rest of America. PAY ATTENTION IN SCHOOL morons. Blacks were the first to earn a right to vote, and if you remember anything about history you would know the whole thing that went on between the leaders of the womens group-susan b anthoney (WHOSE FACE was placed ont SILVER DOLLAR for several year) and of the african american group led by frederick douglass where after initially both working united to gain rights for blacks AND Women Douglas and other black leaders concluded they would not be able to garnish enough support for both changeds and thus changed to a pure black vote platform. She was instrumental in helping get the black vote, and in a way those early women leaders sacrificed their own rights in order to promote the black vote. women would have to wait an additional FIFTY YEARS for the right. Frankly I do not think you can talk about the changes in the rights of Black without including Anthony in the discussion.

    428

    Re: Shamzy

You don't know what you are talking about. Women did not gain the right to vote in Federal Elections until 1920 when the 19th Amendment was ratified. Prior to that, legislation had been proposed and rescinded at the local level in a few states. The Fifteenth Amendment, which was ratified in 1870, gave black men the right to vote. What happened is that southern Democrats - who had been adamantly pro-slavery - regained control of their states through a variety of means, and once they did, they enacted barriers to keep blacks from voting, such as the Jim Crow laws. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed those ridiculous requirements, permanantly banning poll taxes and literacy tests as a requirement to vote. So, technically Whoopi was wrong - the right of black men to vote was federally recognized 1870, but they were systematically denied that right due to Jim Crow laws; women's right to vote was federally recognized in 1920.

  29. barbara says – reply to this

    429

technically they are both right. women were granted the right to vote in 1920. in 1865 the 15th amendment gave african-americans the right to vote, but 90 years of state laws prohibited blacks from voting until the civil rights movement changed that, well after the women's suffrage movement succeeded. I don't doubt for a minute that whoopi knows all this, i'm on her side. nice to see your blog sparking some history lessons on mlk day.

    Re: Shamzy

    Lets make this REALLY easy.

Black men got the right to vote after the Civil War (1870).
Women got the right to vote in the early 20th century (1920).

Were there poll taxes and such, of course. It is, however, nonsense to say that blacks had no political influence or de facto right to vote until the mid 1960s. Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first black man elected to the Senate… in 1870. If you have no clue what you're talking about, don't.

And why didn't Walters correct anyone? The great 'journalist' doesn't know her history either?

Elizabeth was just guessing here. When Whoopi corrected her (whether she was right or wrong), she goes off to say she was mixed up. You can tell in the way she said that retraction that she wasn't really sure. So the people who are giving Elizabeth credit for being technically correct are being far too kind to her. She was guessing!!

And if she was right or wrong, the way the country was X years ago, doesn't mean the country is the same way today. So her logic about the country's leaning more towards sexism/racism based on old rulings is faulty.

Sherri is definitely as dumb as rock. But I think Elizabeth is not far behind her being as dumb as a fencepost.

  65. Nichelle says – reply to this

    465

I think the big problem when answering the question of who got voting rights first is that two different branches of government were saying two different things. The Legislative branch was trying to pass a Civil Rights bill that allowed blacks to vote and would outlaw the Jim Crow laws (literacy tests, intelligence tests, property req. etc.)

However, the Judical branch was saying they had no right to intfere on an indiviuals right to be a racist. So, the Supreme Court was ruling for the Jim Crow laws and the Legislative was writing bills to try to stop them. And, anything brought to the Supreme Court to challenge what the legislators were doing was ruled against the Congress.

    A hot topic still today!

Before the Civil War the United States Constitution did not provide specific protections for voting. Qualifications for voting were matters which neither the Constitution nor federal laws governed. At that time, although a few northern states permitted a small number of free black men to register and vote, slavery and restrictive state laws and practices led the franchise to be exercised almost exclusively by white males.

Ummm…Perez maybe you shouldn't act so smart. Just because you don't like Elizabeth doesn't mean she's stupid. The whole earth is flat thing was ridiculous, but this isn't at all. Most of America in general are a bunch of morons. I bet the majority couldn't tell you what time zone they are in.

Of course Whoopi was wrong– those idiots on the view are always spewing misinformation. Yes, black men had the right to vote (1870) before women got the right to vote (1920) –about 50 years before!!

No, Whoopi was right. How can we Americans not even know our own history? The world around us knows American history better than we do. Sad. Women received the right to vote early in the twentieth century, and African Americans didn't receive that right until the civil rights movement, which was much later on. Come on guys!

Sure, Elisabeth was correct, but why did she then back off her stance and said she meant it the other way around? And none of the other panelists had a opinion; hence, all were ignorant to the fact.

    Here are the facts:
15th amendment granted blacks the right to vote in 1870.
19th amendment granted women the right to vote in 1920.

    Elisabeth was right!
Perez, maybe you need to go back to high school!

Whoopi needs to brush up on her history. All together now..can we say The Lincoln Proclamation??? This abolished slavery and gave black men the right to vote..Then the 19th Ammendment in the 1920s gave women the right to vote. Elisabitch was right and should have stood up for herself.

    Re: ANITA
yah the first woman voter was in 1756…which is actually BEFORE the united states was the united states..or a nation independant of England..or was organized under the modern Constitution..which, by the way genius, is the article to which the rights we are speaking of belong..so just calm down there. Also if you know anything about American history, there were plenty of states that had womens' suffrage before the 19th amendment, remember how our country was formed on a compromise of state vs. federal government; confederation vs federation, reserved/delegated powers, balance of power, etc?The 19th amendment was simply granting UNIVERSAL womens' suffrage, and thanks to the SUPREMACY CLAUSE as well as "incorporation" from the 14th amendment, it applied to all states. So to say no woman voted before the 19th amendment, as you seem to be negating through your "proof", is not only wrong, but common knowledge as being wrong to any person with a basic knowledge of our country's history..so thanks, but we don't need your help.

It is a confusing topic, but Whoopi is right. Although the fight started for black men in 1865, they were not guaranteed the right until 1965, some 35 years AFTER white women received the right in 1920. The 15th Amendment was added to the constitution in 1870 to protect black voting rights. Many black men voted over the next decade, but then many states started passing laws essentially blocking them from doing so. Some required voters to pass literacy tests or to pay poll taxes. Since most blacks had been slaves, few had any money or were able to read and write. This essentially made is impossible for them to vote. It remained this way until 1965.
