Elisabeth Hasselbeck Needs To Go Back To High School!

Sheri must be real happy Elizabitch is back on The View.

On Monday's episode, Hasselbeck had a hard time remembering who was granted the right to vote first - women or people of color.

Thankfully, Whoopi put her in her place.

Click here to check it out!

P.S. Rosie must be laughing her ass off…in a very ANNOYING way.

Update: Whoopi was wrong?

Maybe we all could use a little history lesson!

Whoopi is just another black person who always wants to bring up how horrible blacks were treated when in fact her ignorant ass is wrong.

The appropriate thing to do would be for Whoopi to apologize. She couldn't have sounded more condescending when she was actually the incorrect one. Not only did freed slaves get the right to vote first, it was a good 50 years before women did, as many others have pointed out. I like frivolous gossip as much as anyone, but it is a shame that more people know Britney's every movement than know basic U.S. history.

people people - while the 15th amendment did predate the 19th amendment the allowances of black men being able to vote was absolutely unforseen. Jim crow laws, citizenship tests, and grandfather clauses entirely hindered african american individuals the ability to even exercise their constitutional rights. once the bill was passed for women in the 1920s african americans were still denied their right to free exercise - therefore while elizabitch might've been technically right whoopi is not, by any means, wrong

    Daniel is EXACTLY right.

Women got the right to vote in 1920, Black MEN got the right to vote in the years after the Civil War, although it was very hard for them to actually vote because of illegal poll taxing and tests to see whether they were literate or not.

Gosh, people are such idiots sometimes, learn your country's history!

    506

Black men = around late 1860's. Most were affliated with some political group but would often not vote due to racism and threats. Women = 1920. In 1965, a law passed saying it was illegal to keep blacks from voting.
I think it's pathetic that Whoopi was wrong, but more so that Elisabeth immediately backed down and said something like "oh yea, whatever…that's what I meant". Just goes to show you that most people on TV don't know SHIZZ!

    WHOOPIE AND PEREZ ARE RIGHT!

1920 = 19TH AMENDMENT: FULL VOTING RIGHTS OF WHITE WOMEN

1965 = CONGRESS VOTING RIGHTS ACT: FULL VOTING RIGHTS OF BLACK MEN AND WOMEN. BLACKS REQUIRED TO HAVE LITERACY TESTS AND PAY POLL TAX IS NOW ILLEGAL.

BLACKS [AFRICAN-AMERICANS] DID NOT BECOME CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES UNTIL 1965

WHITE WOMEN BECAME CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES IN 1920

I GOT IT MIXED UP! THAT'S WHAT I MEANT! When really, it wasn't. She meant what she said first. They're all idiots on that show! Especially Barbara! Then Elizabeth, especially since she thinks she's second in command for some reason.

    .
The 15th amendment was resisted by the state officials who refused to enforce it and created all sorts of underhanded but legal roadblocks that would effectively prohibit blacks from voting while not directly making them ineligible based on race.
    .
It wasn't until 1965 that the Voting Right Act was passed to counteract state resistance and officially guaranteeing the rights of black voters. For example, it banned basing the right to vote on literacy tests (which was but one tactic that many southern states used to keep many blacks from the polls long after the 15th amendment in 1870, right up to the early 1960s).
    .
So really, neither Elizabeth or Whoopi is really wrong.

I'm actually really surprised Elisabeth got it right. Black women got to vote the same time as white women. Since over 50% of the population is women then a women could become president if all of the women would vote together. That would never happen though.

15th amendment passed in 1870: gave every MAN regardless of color or national origin the right to vote; 19th amendment passed in 1920 gave women the right to vote. #511 - Andrea says – reply to this

It is a confusing topic, but Whoopi is right. Although the fight started for black men in 1865, they were not guaranteed the right until 1965, some 35 years AFTER white women received the right in 1920. The 15th Amendment was added to the constitution in 1870 to protect black voting rights. Many black men voted over the next decade, but then many states started passing laws essentially blocking them from doing so. Some required voters to pass literacy tests or to pay poll taxes. Since most blacks had been slaves, few had any money or were able to read and write. This essentially made is impossible for them to vote. It remained this way until 1965.

Actually, forget my last post. Andrea's post is way better and explains it with far more clarity than mine or Daniel's! :)

Whoppi is wrong, she needs to go back to school. I hope someone told her so:
It was the first law in U.S. history that extended the ballot to African-American men. Under the bill, every male citizen of the nation’s capital who was 21 or older became enfranchised. The exceptions were welfare or charity cases, those under guardianship, those convicted of major crimes and those who had voluntarily sheltered Confederate troops or spies during the Civil War.

    526

People of color were technically given the right to vote after the Civil War and the passing of the 14th and 15th Amendments. Women were given the right to vote after the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. However, states still found ways around letting people of color vote (literacy tests, poll taxes, etc.) until 1964 when the Civil Rights Act was passed and the 24th Amendment. These two pieces of legislation closed all loopholes that any state could use to limit any person's right to vote.

  27. sam says – reply to this

Women weren't given the right to vote until AFTER black men. Look back. It was a huge part of the 1920's.

Sect. 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

    19th Amendment

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

    Whoopi was DEAD wrong -

African American (MEN) were given the right to vote in 1870 when the 15th Amendment was ratified to state that the right to vote shall not be denied on the basis of race, color or previous position of servitude (slaves).

Women, on the other hand, were not given the right to vote under the 19th Amendment until Aug 26th 1920…

I'm not even American and I know that!! I'm Canadian!

SO, looks like Whoopi was way off by 50 whole years! Pisses me off when ignorant people bully other people. Too bad Elisabeth didn't have the confidence to stand up to Whoopi and say "NO, I'm right!"

    534

I learned about this last year. Basically, Blacks got the right to vote right after the Civil War. However, after reconstruction passed, new rules such as a poll tax and the grandfather clause made it difficult for any blacks to vote down south. However, I believe they could still vote in the north. In 1920, women were granted the right to vote througout the U.S. (although they were allowed to vote in some western states already). It wasn't until the Civil Rights movement in the 60's that blacks were able to vote down south again.

So blacks WERE granted the right to vote years before women were. Hope that clears things up a bit.

  35. Christina says – reply to this

    535

15th amendment 1870 - newly freed MALE SLAVES had the right to vote
1869 1st woman had the right to vote only in Wyoming to increase population of women because of all the men in the state 19th amendment 1920- nationwide women were able to vote
So actually women did vote before blacks had the right to! Know your history!

That's ridiculous. Black men were given the right to vote when they abolished slavery. Women weren't allowed to vote until the Civil Rights Movement. I love how Whoopi says it in that condescending tone making Elizabeth feel dumb when she was right in the first place. THE REPUBLICAN WAS RIGHT

  40. No one in particular says – reply to this

    540

Well they're both right and wrong. Women were granted the vote in 1920-under the 19th Amendment. Blacks were allowed to vote in 1870, however, the Jim Crow laws, the KKK and low literacy levels made it impossible to do so. It wasn't until 1964's Civil Rights Act that all blacks were given full right to the franchise.

  41. Edward says – reply to this

    541

Elisabeth was right. Women received the right to vote in 1920. Blacks (but not black women) received the right to vote with the 13th amendment (1865). It is easy to look up if you want to read more.

  42. Frances says – reply to this

    542

Free blacks voted in some northern states from the beginning. After the Civil War, Reconstruction governments in the South let blacks vote on a state by state basis as soon as the governments were established. The 15th Amendment prohibiting states from denying the righht to vote on the basis of race or previous servitude was adopted in 1870; but by then blacks were already voting in all states

black men could vote before ANY woman. however, jim crowe, etc. kept most eligible black males from actually being allowed to cast votes. But to be technical, black men were constitutionally allowed to vote before women were given the constitutional right in 1920. Jim crowe laws, especially in south, continued to prevent black people from voting until they were abolished during the Civil Rights movement.

Why are all of you blind liberals not calling Whoopie a dumb cunt for being completely wrong? Kind of like how some cities defy the constitution and outlaw gun ownership. This is why the federal government should ALWAYS enforce the constitution completely!!!

Well, Daniel beat me to it. I don't understand how people can say things without proper research. Whoopi was not incorrect in her statement. Yes, Amendment XV granted black people the right to vote in 1870, however, Jim Crow took away all rights for people of color to vote. It wasn't until President Johnson's Civil Rights Act of 1964 that acknowledged black people as equal citizens and granted them equal rights.

Susan B. Anthony tried to vote along with 150 other woman across the U.S. in the Nov 1872 election. However, she was (the only one) arrested. These women were testing whether the 14th and 15th amendments would apply to them. Of course those amendments didn't apply to women and at her trial she was declared guilty and fined $100. She didn't pay it. Women also weren't allowed to own property if they were married and didn't have legal rights to their children.

Here's a quote from the Democratic Party in 1894 "We oppose woman suffrage as tending to destroy the home and family, the true basis of political safety…we express the hope that the helpmate and guardian of the family sanctuary may not be dragged from the modest purity of self-imposed seclusion to be thrown unwillingly into the unfeminine places of political strife"

In 1870 - the Wyoming and Utah territories granted women the right to vote. Utah rescinded them in 1887 and in 1896 gave the right back. Colorado in 1893 and Idaho in 1896 gave women the right to vote too. Many more states granted voting rights to women after 1906…

i love how whoppi was completely condescending towards elizabeth. i don't even like elizabeth but she was right today and whoppi attacked and elizabeth totally backed down. you would think a show like the view would have fact checkers or something! black MEN received the right to vote in 1870 with the 15th amendment and women were not granted suffrage until 1920 with the 19th. that is a 50 year difference. don't jump so quickly next time whoppi.

  68. ryan says – reply to this

    568

wow perez, you could use a little educating yourself. womens suffrage took place in 1920. This is long after the black man was allowed to vote even though many tests were given which ultimately prevented them from being able to vote. I would be willing to guess that the majority of the people who comment on this site don't have a clue about anything that is going on in the world. dont get me wrong, I frequent daily but I also seek to educate myself on real world issues! You people shouldn't hate on Elisabeth so badly. She is an American just as all of us(I AM ASSUMING) and has the right to feel and say what she pleases. She may not agree with what you or someone else thinks but she pays taxes just like you and I. Get over yourselves people. You are all a bunch or crybabies. It is really scared to think that you can hate someone you have never met regardless of their views!

  69. Heather says – reply to this

    569

First of all, black men got the right to vote a in the late 1800's, but stupid james crow laws made it pretty much impossible for that to happen, then it was restated again soon after, then in 1920 women (ALL women) got the right to vote. However, it was still hard for black people to vote due to registration tests and so on. So, technically Elizabeth was right and Whoopi needs to learn her history.

Other territories and states granted women the right to vote in the late 19th and early 20th century, but national women's suffrage did not come until the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified in 1920.

    * 1870
First African-American to vote in an election under the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution, granting voting rights regardless of race: Thomas Mundy Peterson

Although the Fifteenth Amendment established particular voting rights, and gave Congress the authority to enforce those rights and regulate the voting process, the vote was still allowed to be withheld from most southern blacks and from non-white minorities throughout the U.S., from the post-Reconstruction era through the 1960s.

President Johnson signed the Act on August 6, 1965. The bill intended to enforce the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, aiming to eliminate various previously legal strategies to prevent blacks and other minorities from voting.

Whoopi is correct. African Americans got the vote in 1905. Women in 1920, under the 19th ammendment. Elisabeth needs to get her fact straight before she starts flapping that pompous mouth of hers.

blacks (men) could theoretically vote in 1870 with the passing of the 15th amendment whereas women couldn't vote until the nineteenth amendment was ratified in 1920.

I wonder how idiotic the dumbasses that left all the ignorant comments about how stupid Elisabeth is feels. SHE was right, not Whoopi. YOU, Perez, and all the other dumb fucks that left those comments are the ones that need to go back to school. How stupid do you have to be? My GOD…you need to get your facts straight before you post an entry on how someone else is stupid…

    PEREZ!!!
I'm sorry to let you know this, but all the answers saying "women" are wrong. The women of the US earned the right to vote with the 19th Amendment, MEN of color with the 15th.

"Black voters came out strongly for the Republicans in the 1868 elections, helping Grant win the presidency." … "but women would not receive the right to vote until 1920."

  83. k says – reply to this

    583

yes, theoretically blacks were able to vote before women according to the fifteenth amendment. but they had to pass a literacy test — which many could not do — in order to place their vote. that was one of the major bars allowing the government to prevent blacks from voting. the voting rights act — passed in 1964 allowed them the freedom to vote without the test. women on the other hand, had been voting for over 40 years prior to that. the 19th amendment, ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote.

    585

Whoopi is wrong and Elizabeth is right. Black men were granted the constitutional right to vote after the Civil War. Of course the KKK and other bigots had something to say about that and most blacks were not free to vote until the 1960's due to discriminatory practices at the polling places such as poll taxes and literacy qualifications. But the US Constitution gave voting rights to black men before women.

    Silly Whoopi Goldberg.
    Yes, she was wrong.

Black men got the right to vote waaaay before women (white or black) got the right to vote.

The fifteenth amendment (1870) made it law for MEN of any race able to vote. The nineteenth amendment, which didn't come around until sometime in 1920, guaranteed the same rights to women. Fifty year difference. Very noticeable.

    Silly Viewgirls. : )

Black men were granted the right to vote with the 15th amendment in 1870. Women were in 1920 with the 19th admendment. Southern states made it impossible for black men to vote with threats, the KKK, poll taxes and so forth. Go to school people. Yes, technically Whoopi was wrong.

    592

First of all, blacks had the right to vote some 50 years before women, so Whoppi was waaaay wrong.

Second, what the hell does Whoppi mean by us? Is the black community the only one she wants to recognize?

Stop spreading all the liberal garbage if you don't know what you're talking about.

Although, still don't like her, Elizabeth was right, Whoopi was wrong..

Black males after the Civil War. Jim Crow laws in the South were used to stop blacks from participating in politics. However black men could vote in the 1860s and did actively in the North and West. The 19th amendment proposed in 1919 finally gave women the right to vote.

    595

Re: Gary – way to go moron, Blacks had the right to vote before women. Blacks got it after the civil war, and in many Southern States, they were disenfranchised through efforts of local governments to keep them from voting. Black men were given the right to vote with the 15th amendment. Women were not given the constitutional right to vote until 1920. Blacks were voting in the North long before women. Check your facts.

    right to vote: 1870 Black
    1920 Women

    thank you Elizabeth!!!!!!!!!!!!

    597

KnowYourHistory is correct. It was passed in congress but many blacks and native indians were not allowed to vote due to Jim Crow. To add to what KnowYourHistory said, you also couldn't vote if you didn't own land which included sharecroppers. By the way Jim Crow happened in the north as well as the south.

seeing this post, watching the video and reading a lot of the comments is HILARIOUS. first of all, as was said, Elizabeth was right! THEN whoopi acts all holier than thou to correct her. THEN a panel of 5 or 6 women (including fricking Barbara Walters!) just accepts that Whoopi was right. THEN perez posts it. THEN dozens of people post that "Elizabitch" is such a moron, she should go back to high school. i mean, seriously? are there so many idiotic people out there?

i guess thats what you get on a celebrity blog site.
