Elisabeth Hasselbeck Needs To Go Back To High School!

Sheri must be real happy Elizabitch is back on The View.

On Monday's episode, Hasselbeck had a hard time remembering who was granted the right to vote first - women or people of color.

Thankfully, Whoopi put her in her place.

Click here to check it out!

P.S. Rosie must be laughing her ass off…in a very ANNOYING way.

Update: Whoopi was wrong?

Maybe we all could use a little history lesson!

    604

Seriously? Come on! How could anyone in todays society not know who got the right to vote first? Especially now that we have a viable woman and black male candidate? I think Whoopi is the one that needs to go back to High School! I personally am pulling for Hillary! She's intelligent, strong, and she has some great plans for America, if only our sexist society could give her a chance. Obama on the other hand, needs to spend more time working for this country before he can disillusion the American people into thinking that he can run this country! Almost his entire time in the Senate has been spent running for President!

mom2ca: Whoopi is correct. African Americans got the vote in 1905. Women in 1920, under the 19th ammendment. Elisabeth needs to get her fact straight before she starts flapping that pompous mouth of hers.

Are you retarded? 1905 comes BEFORE 1920 you moron. YOU are the one that needs to go back to KINDERGARTEN and learn to fucking COUNT!!!!

All you haters need to get a life. No one would make a fuss over this if Joy or Barbara or hideous Whoppi made a slip up like this. Elisabeth is overly scrutinized because everyone is JEALOUS. She is beautiful, intelligent, and brave and everyone hates that she is willing to hold her own in an overly liberal, moral-crumbling world. Elisabeth will never be fired because she elicits strong ratings because of idiots like you. She is too talented and educated to be on The View. All of those who dislike her do so because you want to be her! ROSIE sucks!

LOL…you are an idiot. Not only are you wrong on your years, but you are wrong in counting. 1905 comes before 1920…as in 5 comes before 20. The 5 and 6 year olds I teach know how to count to 100. They also know that 5 comes before 20. You don't. You are a moron.

    15th amendment = 1870ish = ALL black men
    19th amendment = 1920 = ALL women

    613

sorry guys, I know its fun to bash Republicans like Elizabeth but she was right. The black people of america won the right to vote after the American Civil war when the 15th Ammendment was ratified in 1870. The 19th Ammendment was not ratified until 1920 for women to get the vote!

    Better Luck next time Whoopi!

Whoopi IS wrong btw.

Blacks had the right a full 50 years before women, jesus people are stupid no wonder people want to change public schools

    617

    * actually whoopi is wrong. although, certainly granting someone the right to vote and then actually letting them vote is a separate issue. in any case, voting rights were granted to people of color before they were granted to women.

Fifteenth Amendment (1870): Forbids the federal government and the states from using a citizen's race, color, or previous status as a slave as a qualification for voting.

Nineteenth Amendment (1920): Prohibits the federal government and the states from forbidding any citizen to vote due to their sex.

    620

    Hasslebeck was right.
Whoopi do your homework before you shoot your mouth off on tv. Shame, I really liked you as Guinan when what you said (even though it was written for you) made sense.
So, The View, here's the correct history:
1870 The 15th Amendment is passed. It gives former slaves the right to vote and protects the voting rights of adult male citizens of any race.

    1920 The 19th Amendment guarantees women's suffrage.

and even though there was legislation in between, black MEN were still given the right to vote before women.

  21. Katie says – reply to this

    621

Blacks were given the right to vote in 1870, after women who were fighting for their right to vote HELPED them achieve that right. As a result, women lost ground in their struggle for rights as U.S. citizens. The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution states: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

In this case, however, citizens are still defined as men.

After years of struggle, perserverance, and aiding the cause of the freed slaves, the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920, stating:
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

I am, in no way, a Republican, but Elisabeth is right. I believe she is a graduate of Boston College and deserves a bit more credit than that which she is given by both your website and the public.

  22. alicia says – reply to this

    622

A constitutional amendment right after the civil war gave blacks the right to vote–that was never "taken away" just rendered ineffective by racist voting requirements. So technically black men got the right to vote first, and then women in the 19th ad, cir. 1920. But while blacks had had the "right" to vote for years, it was pretty much meaningless until the 1965 voting rights act.

lol and liberal sanctimony. You're all up on conservatives when you think they're wrong. But this is the problem with liberals. They don't think. They only believe what MTV, Whoopi, and Perez have to say. This is a classic thread and shows that liberals are stupid AND sanctimonious–whereas the worst that can be said of some conservatives is that they're just stupid (w/o the sanctimony for those of you not following). I'll take simple stupidity over stupidity + sanctimony any day.

    627

In 1870 the 15th Amendment was ratified, when said that the vote should not be denied on the basis of race. The Enforcement Act of 1870, which contained criminal penalties for interference with the right to vote, and the Force Act of 1871, which provided for federal election oversight.

As a result, in the former Confederate States, recently-freed slaves registered to vote. Black candidates began for the first time to be elected to state, local and federal offices and to play a meaningful role in their governments.

The extension of the franchise to black citizens was strongly resisted by the Ku Klux Klan, the Knights of the White Camellia, and other terrorist organizations. Two decisions in 1876 by the Supreme Court narrowed the scope of enforcement, which resulted in a climate in which violence could be used to depress black voter turnout and fraud could be used to undo the effect of lawfully cast votes.

I HOPE THAT WHEN YOU SAY BLACKS DID NOT BECOME CITIZENS OF THE U.S. UNTIL 1965, YOU REALLY MEAN THEY DID NOT BECOME CITIZENS UNTIL 1865( AND YOUD STILL BE OFF BY A FEW YEARS..). EVER HEARD OF THE 14TH AMENDMENT? DECLARING AFRICAN AMERICANS CITIZENS OF THE U.S? OBVIOUSLY NOT, AND OBVIOUSLY NOT THE 15TH AMENDMENT WHICH GARAUNTEED VOTING RIGHTS TO BLACKS AS WELL..THE 1960S WAS SIMPLY THE REINFORCEMENT OF THE 15TH AMENDMENT BY OUTLAWING POLL TAXES, LITERACY TESTS, ETC. AND I SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY HOPE YOU ARE NOT BLACK. LEARN YOUR PEOPLE'S HISTORY AND STOP DISRESPECTING YOUR ANCESTORS BY SAYING THEY WEREN'T CITIZENS BEFORE 1965.

    653

Actually, African Americans had the right to vote before women. Because African Americans were looked upon like dirt and many people treated them like territory the fact that they got the vote before the woman pissed the ladies off. Therefore sending them into social groups, protesting etc. Whoopi needed to intervene and make sure she corrected Elizabeth on the African American history, except that she had no idea what she was talking about and spoke out of her ass.

  54. avril says – reply to this

    654

Ther water is a little murky here but roughly speaking, black males were given the right to vote following the Civil War while women were not empowered to vote in a presidential election in the US as a whole until 1920, although women did vote in the 1892 election. However, black enfranchisement was not enforced in real terms until the Civil Rights Bill was passed by the Kennedy government, in 1964 I think, so there are arguments for and against each view point. I can't believe I am Australian and I know this stuff and Americans do not seem to have any idea!

ok, for those of you that did not pay attention in history class, black men were given the right to vote before women were, however though they had the right to vote the registration process was made much too difficult for the poorly educated black men to be able to actually vote. So they had the right to vote before women did, but they were treated unfairly and not able to vote due to the racist people that were in charge of voting registration.

    667

Most of the people who posted are right.. constitutionally, suffrage was granted to people of color following the civil war, while women were unable to vote until the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920s. however, the sad reality is that due to a variety of sociological issues, people of color were generally unable to vote–or at least do so freely–until the passage of the Voting Rights Act, passed in 1965. Previous posters have correctly written that a number of factors, including poll taxes, registration tests and other requirements significantly inhibited the ability of colored people to vote, until the VRA prohibited these obstacles. Even after that it was difficult for some blacks, particularly in the South, to vote easily. However, it definitely wasn't until 1965 that most blacks were able to vote, despite the post-Civil War Constitutional Amendment that granted them suffrage. It wasn't until 45 years AFTER women were granted the right to vote that blacks could truly say they were granted the same right.

African American males had the right to vote before women as a whole did.

However, in the South, whites would prevent blacks from voting through poll taxes and fear tactics.

In Florida, Jeb Bush prevented blacks from voting in 2000 through fake voter lists that disenfranchised citizens who had the same last names as a few felons.

In Ohio in 2004, the Republican SOS used caging and fewer voting machines to prevent blacks from voting.

If you go to the evangelical and extreme right wing websites, their stated goal is to take the vote away from women.

Re: frank – I guess they are both right, and at the same time both wrong. I don't understand how this election will establish if we are more racist or more sexist? Aren't we over race/gender issues? I guess not in all parts of the United States…very sad. The below was taken from wikipedia.org:
The prohibition of voting rights discrimination on the basis of race, color, or previous condition of slavery was first codified by the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1870. Soon after the failure of Reconstruction, southern states found other means besides those enumerated in the Fifteenth Amendment to deny the vote to blacks, through violence, intimidation, via Jim Crow laws that included literacy tests, poll taxes, and also grandfather clauses that permitted otherwise disqualified voters whose grandfathers voted (thus allowing some white illiterates to vote), some with the aim and effect of re-imposing racially motivated restrictions on the voting process that prevented blacks from having political and economic power. Although the Fifteenth Amendment established particular voting rights, and gave Congress the authority to enforce those rights and regulate the voting process, the vote was still allowed to be withheld from most southern blacks and from non-white minorities throughout the U.S., from the post-Reconstruction era through the 1960s.

True, while the 15th amendment was ratified(passed) in 1870 and the 19th amendment was passed in 1920, there were many unfair practices in place to prevent black men from voting.

    Three popular practices were:

A: The Grandfather clause: you were only allowed to vote if you could prove that your grandfather was a free black man. In 1870 in this country, the chances of that happening were slim to none.

    B. Literacy tests: Black men would be given a test to prove they could read prior to being allowed to vote; however, the tests were usually provided in German, French or Spanish.

    C. Poll taxes: Black men would have to pay a fee in order to vote.

So while Elizabeth was initially correct in saying that the 15th amendment was ratified long before the 19th, women (while) had little to no problems after Prohibition proving that they, after being granted the right, should.

    1920 - 19TH AMENDMENT - women's right to vote

how fucking ridiculous! whoopi lost ALMOST all her celebrebility for that dumbass comment. OF COURSE A FUCKING BLACK PERSON WAS ABLE TO VOTE BEFORE A WOMAN! second of all, just because Elisabeth isn't a bleeding heart liberal who doesn't feel the need to give her EARNED MONEY away to everyone on the streets, and just because she doesn't place all responsibility on everyone else's shoulders but her own, doesn't mean she shouldn't be on the show. God, how fucking lame and pathetic would it be to have a panel of FOUR LIBERAL WOMEN. bogus. i love Perez, and although our thoughts may differ at times, i just wanted to put every other douche bag in check who have ignorant, irrelevant comments.

it doesnt matter if the next president is a woman or a man, back or white, gay or straight, democrat or republican… it only matters what he or she can bring to this country, and i honestly think Denis Kucinich and Ron Paul are those people. look them up.. the media doesnt talk about them AT ALL.. and theres a reason for it.. the reason is not because they're not front runners.. quite the contrary… they have a message that the media will not allowed to be said. LOOK THEM UP! DO RESEARCH AND VOTE ACCORDING TO YOUR OWN OPPINION! becase the media is BOUGHT by the 1% that ownes the rest of this country… DONT believe everything u se on the news…

RON PAUL AND DENNNIS KUCINICH ARE THIS COUNTRYS ONLY HOPE!!!

Re: Belle – [re=1320632]Re: You didn't post the rest perez. For everyone who said African Americans men had voting rights before women, that's odd if you’re considered 3/5 of a man (as stated in the constitution). We all need a refresher, regardless of race. Can we get beyond the color and really focus on the character and leadership of the presidential candidates. This is ridiculous. African Americans are good enough to set trends, play sports etc, but not good enough to be president. Give me a break. If you’re looking for an experienced candidate, it is the "experienced" that brought us to the state we are in now-disarray. We have to unite. How can we ask the world to view us as the UNITED STATES of America if we are divided? We have the power, each and every one of us. I believe in everyone, regardless of whether you vote blue or red, just exercise your right to vote and if you don't prepare to deal with the consequences.

Black men were given the vote with the passage of the 15th Amendment in 1870, but were effectively barred from exercising it by the use of poll taxes and literacy tests. Blacks were finally given full access to the vote in the 1960s with the passage of the 23rd amendment (abolishing poll taxes) and passage of the 1964 Voting Rights Act.

Suffrage for women was just as uneven. It was granted first in the Wyoming territory in 1869, but it was not until 1920 with the passage of the 19th amendment that all women everywhere in the US won the vote.

Is Whoopi not a woman? Weren't black men FIRST granted the right to vote under the 15th amendment on February 7, 1870? Women were granted their right to vote under the 19th amendment of (enacted August 18,1920). While Black men had this right, women of all color were left fighting for where they stood in terms of their privileges. Sojourner Truth addressed the issue of voting in her 1851 speech "Ain't I A Woman?" So… actually it seems Elizabeth would be correct in this instance.

Black men did get the right to vote before women. On a similar note, I just want to point out something that most people are unaware of. The equal rights amendment for women has never passed, even though it was originally introduced in the 1920s and had a revival during the 1970s. That should give us all an inkling about our country's opinon of women.
