The 15th Amendment gave black people the right to vote in 1870.
The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920.

WHOOPI IS WRONG. Elizabeth IS right. Black were allowed to vote technically before the Women's Suffrage Movement when women were finally allowed to vote.

Despite the fact that the 15th amendment being past, Black people were still not allowed to vote. Literacy tests, grandfather clauses and just old fashioned beatings kept African Americans from voting in this country for the next 95 years. It was not until the voting rights act of 1965 that Black people were TRULY given voting rights (and then even after the law was past it took a few years for all states to actually enforce it). This of course was 45 years AFTER women were given the right to vote.
THESE ARE HISTORICAL FACTS. So, for all you that didn't know that SHOULD GO BACK TO SCHOOL.

Whoopi is, in a way, correct. While minority males were able to vote after the Civil War and they were guaranteed such with a nice amendment, practically, it was difficult for them to vote. Usually, they had to pass literacy tests, pay "poll taxes," and jump through inordinate hoops in order to get into the voting booth. Yes, women had the legal right to vote after blacks but they probably had a much easier time pulling the levers.
What kills me is that Whoopi acts like she is soooooooo offended by what Elizabeth said. Too funny that she (whoopi) was completely wrong.

The fact remains that the law was that in 1870 black men were allowed to vote, while women were allowed beginning in 1920. Enforcement clearly was at issue, but remained so for both blacks and females. The fact remains though that while not all black men were allowed the privilege of voting, some indeed did but not universally for many more years.

Actually, black men DID vote before any woman did (as of 1869 and the 15th Ammendment). Granted with this Ammendment there were rules and regulations that made it very difficult for blacks to vote. Like the "Grandfather Clause", literacy tests, and other 'Black Codes'. Other the years these rules and regulations were slowly dimonished over time. However, women (as well as know) got the vote in 1920 as of the 19th Ammendment. As much as I HATE that Hasselback woman, she's actually correct.

Also in an effort to prevent them from voting, a poll tax was imposed, knowing fully that most blacks could not afford to pay it. This was lifted in 1964 with the 24th amendment. Women on the other hand gained the right to vote in 1920 with the 14th amendment. Somewhere I had read that women would have gained the right sooner, had not so many turned up to vote.
I used to be a history teacher & I was unsure of this (I know, what kind of history teacher WAS i? I would say Whoppi is correct. Although black men gained "the right" to vote via the U.S. Constitution and the 13th Amendment, the individual states subsequently passed a series of laws that actually prevented most black men from being able to vote. The problems posed by the state laws were compounded by intimidation at the polls by racist groups such as the KKK. Thus the 13th Amendment was an unrealized right. In the meantime, white women gained the right to vote via the 19th Amendment. Long after the 19th Amendment passed, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1963. This law really opened the doors of the polls to black men and women–the law contained several provisions that broke down racist state laws and intimadiation practices. The law, combined with actual enforcement by the U.S. Department of Justice, meant that beginning in the 1960s, black people could actually realize their right to vote. In short, although the 13th Amendment (granting black men the right to vote) was on the books for several decades, black men were not actually voting because of racist activities in the states. A right that can not be realized is no right at all. Thus, white women really had the right to vote before black men.

i guess you could say that both of them are right cause a black man did vote before a woman however when women got the right to vote they had no stipulations and when black men got the right to vote they had to pay money to vote, do literacy tests, etc. It wasnt until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that took away stipulations on voting for black men. Guys: It was NOT until President Johnson signed The Voting Rights Act in 1965 that blacks COULD actually vote. Yes they were "allowed" to before then, but between the Poll Tax and literacy testing in most states, especially the South, they were NOT ALLOWED to vote which is why President Johnson and Congress HAD to make it a LAW.
From MSNBC's coverage of the anniversary of the LAW: "As lawmakers and activists mark the law’s anniversary 40 years after President Johnson signed it into law on Aug. 6, 1965, there is a consensus that the Voting Rights Act is one of the most effective laws in U.S. history, standing with Brown vs. Board of Education as an enduring example of the nation’s living up to its original principles." Whoopi is 100% right, women were much more allowed to vote, and voted, long before all african americans were allowed to even walk by a polling place.
