Elisabeth Hasselbeck Needs To Go Back To High School!
Filed under: Elizabitch HasselbeckSheri must be real happy Elizabitch is back on The View.
On Monday's episode, Hasselbeck had a hard time remembering who was granted the right to vote first - women or people of color.
Thankfully, Whoopi put her in her place.
Click here to check it out!
P.S. Rosie must be laughing her ass off…in a very ANNOYING way.
Update: Whoopi was wrong?
Maybe we all could use a little history lesson!

perez you have posted more stuff all day but you can't edit that title ?
you would rather spread a lie than a 2 second retype that whoopie needs to go back to school ?
it's called a RETRACTION DUDE. everyone write his ass and ask for it to be fixed and maybe he can take a second to correct his mistake he left up all day, on purpose
please post the correction. Black men were given the right to vote with the 15th amendment in 1870. Women did not win the right to vote until 1920 with the 19th amendment.
Actually Whoopi was technically right. Women were given the right to vote in 1920. Black men were disenfranchised from voting until the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Meaning although the could technically vote, it was made almost impossible for them to do so.
Elizabeth was right! African Americans were given the right to vote in 1870. Women in 1920.
Re: Franknbeans – so you failed the bar in july huh, if you can be so easily confused by the brainless people on the view, you should stop watching tv all together and study more.
black men got the vote first due to the 15th amendment (1870). it was difficult for black men in the southern states to vote right away due to various tests and taxes.
women got the vote second due to the 19th amendment (1919). the first time women were allowed to vote was in the presidential election of 1920.
in 1965, the voting rights act was passed that basically made it illegal for there to be difficulties regarding voter registration, and it was signed for a 25 year extension in 2006.
yeah, whoopi was wrong.
maybe she needs a history lesson after all
she hasn't been in a high school for a while so i will excuse her lapse
Re: THE WORLD IS FLAT –
Really??!? Interesting…how ignorant must one be to think that a WHOLE RACE OF PEOPLE WHO MANY HAVE BEEN IN AMERICA FOR OVER 150 YEARS is nothing but a bunch of morons!
I challenge you any day The World Is Flat!
The Voting Rights Act was only signed in 1965- removing all Jim Crow laws and finally allowing Blacks their Constitutional right to vote. Technically speaking.
OMG…Is everyone RETARDED!? Blacks MEN voted before WOMEN! UGH! Woopi should know this being a BLACK WOMAN! What is wrong with everyone!? HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW THIS…Women didn't get to vote until 1920!!! BE AN EDUCATED PUBLIC PEOPLE! VOTE HILLARY!
Re: Tarita – you are an idiot. You looked up 2 dates and considered yourself a master of American history. You forgot to add the dates of th 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments that abolishes slavery and granted African American MALES citizenship. AND THE RIGHT TO VOTE. This country is going to shit if people like you are really out there, and probably bearing children.
black men could vote before women.because no matter what women are second class citizens.
First African-American to vote in an U.S election was in 1870
First women to vote in an U.S election was in 1920,
Hahahaha, everyone laugh in the face of mario. That's right, so it's personal. So the dumb fat idiot cant say that perez is just a character. You had NO FUCKING IDEA what you were talking about!! Yet you tried to make someone else sound stupid! You know what that does? Makes you sound like a fucking douche bag in the process!!
15th amendment prohibited voting discrimination on basis of color, but the voting rights act of 1965 took away the literacy tests that were aimed to prevent african americans from voting, so more african americans could vote after the voting rights act was passed
19th amendment prohibited voting discrimination on basis of gender, which allowed for national women's suffrage
so technically elisabitch is right, but many african americans could not vote until the voting rights act of 1965 was passed
Hey Elisanbeth….please just shut the fuck up….wheather you are right or not, you are very annoying…please leave this show…you are a HASBEEN.
CASE CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW Whoopi IS SOOOOOO WRONG? 1920 Women got to vote. Black people were able to vote WAYYYY YYY before that. I thought The View had educatied people
Yeah, Whoopie says, "we" got it later. Well, did she mean "we women" or "we blacks"?
Um, blacks had the right to vote in 1868, but southern states made rules that kept them from voting and women got the right to vote in the 1920, so really Whoopi is wrong.
Wow kids, get off line and open a book for Pete Sakes. Black men were allowed to vote thanks to a little something called the 15th amendment to the constitution. Maybe you've heard of it? The year 1869. When were women allowed to vote? 1920…thanks to the sufferigists! Jesus kids..get off line.
Re: Tobes –
I guess you need a history lesson, too. Women's suffrage was 1920 and Black people didn't get the right to vote until 1964. Check your facts before you make statements.
Yes Blacks had the "right" to vote, but really werent allowed to due to restrictions from the supreme court and things like jim crow laws etc etc, thus I dont really think she was "wrong". She was referring to the voters rights act of 1965 which allowed blacks to vote under FAIR conditions.
:) Go Whoopi!
Thank goodness she has money and handlers cause she is an idiot, so is Sherri, but at least she does not pretend to be more than she is.
Yeah, blacks weren't offered the right to vote until 1965 when Johnson signed the Voters' Rights Act. Women got the right to vote in August of 1920 with the 19th Amendment.
Now, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments effectively ended slavery, but they didn't specifically give blacks the right to vote until Johnson passed the Voter's Rights Act.
Which is also? Only an ACT, not a LAW. Regan extended the act in the 1980s for 25 years, so it expired in 2007 and had to be extended again. Isn't that funny?
Re: Mike –
You're partially correct. Though Blacks were given the right to vote, many Southern states created barriers which prevented them from actually voting (such as the poll tax and land ownership requirements). It wasn't until the 24th amendment in 1964 that those loopholes were removed, giving Black people the freedom to vote throughout the U.S.
Let me amend this to say that all Men got the right to vote in the 1800s. Sorry I was partially incorrect.
However even though blacks had the right to vote, they were kept from doing so until 1965 by having to pay money, taking impossible tests that could not be passed, and the like. So women were able to EXERCISE their right to vote first, and THEN blacks.
Black men had the right to vote after the Civil War for about 12 years. However, not many were able to vote because of property clauses, literacy tests that required them to vote. So, you're wrong.
I hope Whoopi feels like an asshole. She should educate herself before correcting people.
A comment I left on both The View website as well as ABC's website:
Since you obviously do not want already educated women on The View's panel, maybe you should do segments where you finally educate them about things they should already know. Sheri REALLY needs this - her ignorance makes me ashamed to be a woman sometimes. However, the rest of the women also need it. I must say I was astonished when Whoopi misinformed both the rest of the women, and your audience, when she said women were allowed to vote before African Americans. Not only did her false statement astonish me since that was simple high school education, but also that no one corrected her - not even your staff during the break - so that the audience could be informed of the correct facts. Women watch your show for information and facts - and that is EXACTLY what they should get…FACTS.
oh my god. no shit whoopi is wrong!!! i can't believe she wouldn't know this.
voting was for white land owners only.
only men could own land. so it started off with white men only.
then it was changed in the years of integration that black MEN could vote.
women were still powerless.
women didn't have any substantial rights or power til they started the whole female empowerment kick.
so the answer is BLACK MEN COULD VOTE BEFORE WOMEN IN GENERAL.
maybe whoopi needs to go back to highschool, along with quite a few of you readers.
women were given the right to vote in the early 20th century. Black men were given the right to vote before women. Although the right to vote was never technically taken away from blacks, states forced people to pass literacy tests and pay taxes in order to prevent black men from voting. This was eventually declared unconstitutional, though I am not sure if that was before or after women's suffrage was granted.
acutally, the way whoopi spoke she was technically right. although black MEN got the right before women, she said "before we did". technically, that could mean black WOMEN, which occurred at the same time as all women got the vote…i'm just saying…
seriously- you people are idiots
this is why our country is going to sh*t
morons who dont know anything about history or the constitution-
i honestly thought it was basic knowledge that blacks got the vote before women… what do you think the suffrage movement was about
what else dont you people know????????????
thank god there are educated people on here to correct you and the idiots who post
Certain jurisdictions in the southern states put laws into place stating that you could not vote without paying property taxes, the majority of people effected were blacks, but also poor whites. The Jim Crow laws certainly prevented many black men from voting but the right was never taken away
women werent even allowed to inheret or own property until the early 1900s- also, there still isnt anything in the constitution about preventing discrimination based on sex, that amendment was struck down in the 1970s
you know, i always had faith in our country and defend us when europeans and canadians criticize us saying we're stupid and lazy
Way to go reinforcing that reputation
WOW I CANT BELIEVE YOU ARE MAKING FUN OF HASSELBECK WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO GOT TO VOTE FIRST, AND HASSELBECK WAS RIGHT, I'M SO SICK OF WHOOPI PLAYING THE RACE CARD, EVEN WHEN SHES COMPLETELY WRONG, YOU AND WHOOPI ARE LIBERAL MORONS…HOW ABOUT THINKING FOR YOURSELF FOR ONCE?
Blacks were definitely able to vote before women. However, before the civil war when many were still in slavery they only got a fraction of a vote and this was done to benefit wealthy individuals who could afford to own slaves as it was presumed they would vote how their masters voted.
yeah…black men definitely had the right to vote before women…elizabeth is right!!! take that whoopi!
Whoopee needs to apologize. Too many black people in this country spend too much time dwelling on the real and imagined inequities of both the past and present. How many of them stop to think or even realize that the previous and current Secretaries of State, two previous National Security Advisors, and the recent or current ceo's of AOL Time-Warner, Merrill Lynch, and American Express are all African American, as well as the current governor of Massachussetts, and the junior senator from Illinois. None of these persons were given these positions because they were black. They were or are in these positions because they were thought to be the best qualified, or won elections. I hope to vote for Barack Obama not because he had a black African father, but because he has the potential to be a great president, and that has nothing to do with the color of his skin, and everything to do with the content of his character. At the very least, he is capable of speaking in complete sentences, even paragraphs, and knows the difference between Austria and Australia.
NO!. elizabeth was right.
whoopi is unfortunately wrong..
maybe you should change the title to this post perez?
yeah black men definitely got the vote about 50 years before women did… so whoopi can wipe that smug ass look off her face
Looks like Ms. Hasselbeck (yuck) was the ONLY idiot on the view who knew SOMETHING about what she was talking about. No one else rushed to put things right. Anyone? Barbara the "journalist"? Wasn't she actually around then? This is pretty basic history, even if people want to quibble about the (yes, majorly important) particulars. They coulnd't even have the most basic discussion about it.
Wow Perez. I thought it was all an act…but you really are a Hilton
# 15th Amendment (1870): no law may restrict any race from voting
# 19th Amendment (1920): no law may restrict any sex from voting
And knowings Half the Battle!
Duuude. African-american men got the right to vote in 1870 under the 15th amendment and women did 50 years later under the 19 amendment! Check you resources biiaaatch Whoopie needs to check em too!
Exactly why I refuse to watch this hen house tripe. That Sheri person and Elizabeth UGH AWFUL……… CNN or Today Show BETTER
For all of you Einsteins who call Whoopi an idiot, I'd like to simply point out that even though the black men were given the right to vote 50 years prior to women, the laws were not enforced or supported until 1963. What the fuck is the purpose of having rights that you can't use? If this is suppose to somehow determine if the US is more sexist than racist, then I guess you have your answer. They hate women & they hate black men (especially). They would rather finally give in to a woman than see a black man in power. PERIOD!!!!
It's fucking 2008 & nothing has really changed. Take Perez Hilton for example. He sucked Baracks cock this far & now he all of a sudden has color-fatigue. What a PUSSY!
HITLER'S DAUGHTER PERFECT !!!!!!!!
OMG…SO WTF…..ITS CLEAR NOT EVEN THIS SITE KNOWS WHAT THEYRE TALKING ABOUT…….BLACKS WERE ALLOWED TO VOTE BEFORE WOMEN..HASSLEBECK WAS RIGHT..EVERYONE CAN USE A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON HERE…
though women had the right to vote they were prevented from going to the polls because their husbands and bosses wouldn't let them and some churches said women should only vote the way their husbands say so. it was socially and politically difficult for women to vote for MANY MANY years after they gained the right. you would think whoopi would know something about feminist history!
There is a saying that "inquiring minds want to know". None of us are know it all. When you don't know something and feel that someone else might know the answer, you ask a question. Knowledge is power and Elizabeth is trying to gain a little knowledge on that particular subject. The purpose of having a round table of different women with different views is to learn something from each other. Hopefully, at the end of the day someone say something profound enough to make you say " I didn't know that" which means that you learned something new. Asking a question to learn something doesn't make you a dummy. The dummy is the one that didn't know and didn't ask.
I am so tired of Whoopi playing the race card all the time.
Oh and perez and all you other morons…elisabeth is the most educated person on this panel.
Just because whoopi's BLACK doesn't make her right…hopefully she won't be back next season.
Blacks males were given the right to vote in the late 1800's, however the Jim Crow laws in the South disenfranchised a lot of black male voters because of the ridiculous standards it placed on black men to prove they were "worthy" of voting. Women received the right in the 20th century, but blacks altogether weren't granted the right and the Jim Crow laws weren't superceded until the 1960's with the Voter's Rights Act.
whoopi was wrong. black men were allowed to vote in the fourtheenth ammendment in the late 1700's. women were allowed to vote in the nineteenth ammendment in 1920. i dont care much for elizabeth hasselback but she was right in this case. whoopi needs to appologize. sucks cuz i like whoopi way more than elizabitch. hate when shes right.
For everyone saying that black men got the right to vote first, WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT WAS ABOUT? Yes, technically they were allowed to vote, but there were Jim Crow laws as well as terroism used to stop Blacks from voting. wow, how can you not know that?
While technically EVERYONE was given the right to vote with the passage of the 16th amendment, neither women nor people of color were really able to vote until the 20th century (Jim Crowe laws, anyone?). Women were able to vote in the 20s. The civil rights acts weren't passed until the 60s. So Whoopi is more correct. There is still disenfranchisement among minorities in many areas. The right to vote is still very racial in nature.
whoppi is referring to the fact that while black men were given the right to vote with 15th amendment in 1870, jim crow laws prevented black men from being allowed to actually vote until the voting rights act in 1965 which outlawed many of the obstacles that were put in place with the intention of preventing african americans from participating in the act of voting. so, technically, women received the right to vote (in 1920) after black men, but black men were only allowed to vote sporadically and in certain parts of the nation until the voting rights act in 1965.
so read it either way you want.
Elizabeth was right, idiots. Do yourselves a favor people on Perez and please don't vote.
ok, so all of you who are saying that are laughing at elisabeth because she was "wrong" you all need a history lesson!! blacks were given the right to vote at the end of the civil war…women were given the right to vote in an amendment in 1920!…ok, so she was stupid for backing down…shoot…i would if whoopi corrected me…whoopi is a very strong fair and decent person who wants everyone to accept eachothers opinions!!! whoopi is awesome…democrat or not…we need to be more tolerant republican or democrat…all we need is love!
The African Americans were allowed to vote for a few years after slavery ended but the privilege was taken away soon after, then in 1919, women gained the right to vote, then in 1967, African Americans were given the right to vote again.
in the late 1800's black male were "allowed" to vote but It was never allowed it wasn't until 1963 with the civil rights movement that and act was pased to enforce black voting rights. So white women in fact were able to vote (1920) before black people
Re: Gary – ok…when you say it was taken away are you aren't meaning legally or constitutionally….the ignorance of the whites(and yes, I am one) would not allow it! LBJ made it possible again and yes he was white!! I'm telling you people…The Beatles had it right when they said "all we need is love"…we all need to take a step back and educate ourselves on tolerance!
Re: You and Whoopi should go on Jeopardy – yeah and I would like to be that third contestant…I'd win!!
Re: YumYum – LOL Yum Yum!!! you are too polite…we need more people like you out there!
Re: Shamzy – you are stupid and not to mention completely wrong…stay in canada!
Although The View is generally a total waste of time, I think the evidence is here that we are all now THINKING of what was said by the two opinions. Maybe this is the first time The View has stimulated this much research into our history and maybe this has been a great way to celebrate the passing of Dr. Martin Luther King. He must be pleased.
i do not like hasselback, but she was correct. blacks were granted the right to vote before women. There were ways to keep blacks from voting such as the poll tax. But ammendment 15 granted the right of united states citizens the right to vote based on race, in 1870. Ammendment 19, which was created in 1920 stated the right of citizens of the United States to vote and shall not be denied based on sex….
hello, easy mistake first of all and 2nd of all….
15th amendment in 1800s - african american men get to vote….
NOT UNTIL 1920 do women get the right to vote.
point of this now….. none. its not friggin race or sex that is going to determine the next pres (at least it SHOULDNT be) it should be about the friggin issues…. hello people, get off the race/sex "woh is me" train and step into the real world
Wow. People here have so much hate. Even though I hate to admit it, but Elizabeth is right. Right after the Civil War, black men were allowed to vote. The women's sufferage movement got exponentially more relevant when women, who worked hard to free slaves, were kicked out of meetings and still not able to vote after the Civil War. Blacks later on were not able to vote when Jim Crow Laws came to be, especially in the South. I was heart broken to hear Whoopi be so incredibly wrong, but I guess she is only thinking about recent history.
And just to say something about if America is either more sexist or more racist, I would have to say more racist. The proof is a comparision of who gets treated better: a black man or a white woman. The answer is pretty obvious.
Whoopi is most definitely wrong.
SO I'm kinda curious when the first 500 commenters who never paid attention in junior high school history blasting Elisabeth for being RIGHT because they believed the words of a fat retard with a pop culture blog are going to apologize for making the world just a bit more dumb.
Oh and the ones who brought up Hasselbeck's Republican leanings calling her 'dumb' you just set your party back about 100 years.
Perez- you need a history lesson: both were right and wrong. while blacks did receive the right to vote before women, most were unable to do so due to the beginning of jim crow which started right after the reconstructionist period- in which all rights previously set for blacks were systematically taken away. So while Whoopi's great great grandfather may have had the right to vote, her great-grandfather up until her generation technically didn't. So in one way Hasselbeck was right, but in another way so was whoopi.
Re: Shamzy –
You are an idiot and obviously don't know anything about American history. Women didn't get the right to vote until the 20th century. Duh, moron.
To represent the profession:
It pains me to say this, but hasselbeck is correct. Universal male suffrage was granted during reconstruction. Such confusion may stem from Jim Crow laws, which undercut the mandate, but black men, nevertheless, had the right to vote first.
Tisk tisk, Whoopi
****ACTUALLY….because of a loophole in legislation, WOMEN in New Jersey who owned land were allowed to vote as early as 1790, and many took advantage of the loophole. New Jersey…always ahead of the pack.
Elizabeth was right with the first comment about black men voting before women. It is true. The 15th Amendment allows colored people to vote.
""Amendment 15 - Race No Bar to Vote. Ratified 2/3/1870. History
1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.""
Women were not allowed to vote until the 19th Amendment was passed.
""Amendment 19 - Women's Suffrage. Ratified 8/18/1920. History
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.""
I can understand the confusion. After the passage of the 15th Amendment and until the Voting Rights Act of 1965, poll taxes and literacy tests effectively denied many African-Americans in the South the right to vote.
1870 - Black men were granted right to vote (15th amendment)
1920 - Women granted right to vote…including black women (19th amendement)
1971 - Voting age lowered to 18 years (26th amendment)
I believe that a white woman got to vote before ane black man - Lydia Taft voted on at least three ocassions, the first being in 1756 - more than 100 years before any black man. So there's one question about legislation - and one regarding who got to vote first.
A better question I would think is rather - why doesn't USA change the voting system? The one existing today is outdated..
black people TECHNICALLY had the rite to vote but their ability to vote was QUICKLY taken away. so in a way they both were rite!
Re: megs – Actually, you are the one thats wrong!!
Whoopi wasn't just off a little…she was WAAAAAAY off. Black men were voting 50 years before women. The 19th amendment was 1920 and black men were voting, elected to Congress, etc.. in the late 1800's. Wonder if she'll correct herself today…doubt it b/c they love to make Elizabeth look like an idiot.
black men voted before white women!
Re: Whatever – She was right… how stupid do you feel? Racist piece of shit.
actually blacks could vote about 50 years before women, so…
Yep, Whoopi was wrong. I think Elizabeth comes across as an idiot, but in this case she was right– non-white men got the vote in 1870, women in 1920.
whoopi is the one whose wrong, blacks got the right to vote in the 15th amendment and woman in the 19th
Re: Smoker – Whoopie is a dumb cunt.
After the war Republican party politicians believed enfranchisement of the ex-slaves would be defeated if harnessed to the even more unpopular cause of woman's suffrage. They succeeded in passing the 14th and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which GAVE THE VOTE TO BLACK MEN BUT NOT TO WOMEN.
Elizabeth was right. Whoopi was wrong.
Blacks got the right to vote in 1870 with the 15th Amendment. Women got the
right to vote (nationally, anyway– Wyoming, Utah, and some other states
already allowed women to vote) in 1920 with the 19th Amendment.
Of course in the South Jim Crow laws prevented many black men from voting
anyway, but they still had a constitutional right 50 years before women did.
I really wish I would've seen this yesterday, Whoopi is an idiot! She just likes to open her mouth to hear herself talk - no one else really cares. Didn't any of you watch Mary Poppin's when you were little… "Votes for Women!". If you didn't watch Mary Poppin's maybe you should've paid attention in Junior High School American History Class… WOW!! A Black Man could vote at least 30 years before a woman… c'mon people…
Elizabeth was right. Read an American History book. Black men could vote via the 15th Amendment, 1870. Women were not granted the right to vote until 1920…the 19th Amendment.
I'm confused is that person with the dreadlocks a man or a woman?
Elizabeth was right. Whoopi was wrong.
Blacks got the right to vote in 1870 with the 15th Amendment. Women got the
right to vote (nationally, anyway– Wyoming, Utah, and some other states
already allowed women to vote) in 1920 with the 19th Amendment.
Of course in the South Jim Crow laws prevented many black men from voting
anyway, but they still had a constitutional right 50 years before women did.
The 15th amendment, ratified in 1870, extended the right to vote to black males. Women weren't able to vote until the 19th amendment. It was passed by congress in 1919 and ratified in 1920.
I think all you numnuts need to apologize to Elisabeth - she was correct!
united states eat cloned meat
women are lazy and stupid their only good for one thing fuckin. and sometimes not even good for that. women are whores
ok whoopie is dreadlock wrong on this and for those who always think Elisabeth is wrong she was right on this. The 15th amendment gave all men the right to vote regardless of color women did not get that right until the 1920's . Those who throw stones at Elisabeth should try picking up a book instead
Perez needs to go back to high school. If a law was passed to allow blacks voting rights before women they were not allowed to vote in most parts of the U.S. Remember what MLK fought for. Remember what the freedom riders rode for. Perez, you and your readers need to do more than comment. They need to read a book, a history book.
Wait wait wait,
Whoopi is wrong!!!! hahahah that sounds funny..
Woman's sufferage was in the 1900's,
black men got the right to vote after the civil war…
it was only in the southern states with Jim Crow laws where black MEN did not have a chance to vote….
Perez you made a BOOB boo
NOW FIX IT!!!
They always pick on Elizabeth and she takes it, what a bitch
Just an FYI, White women were given the privledge first then men and women of color…thats just common sense, oh and an excellent education
first of all…..Perez what are you talking about…Whoopi was right…..black people did not get the right to vote until 1965…..and women got the right to vote in 1920…so what is hard to understand…assholes!
