Details are currently very hazy but it is believed he died of a drug overdose.
His body was found at an apartment on Broome Street in manhattan.

I really liked him - he was such a charismatic guy and really talented actor. I think he loved being an actor but he hated Hollywood. I never got to know him but what I can see and know is that he was not right for this place and it also hit me when I watched it on Cnn. It's a loss and his dead is representativly for all this shit going on. I also think he just took to many and died on accident. It's sad… And other people just go on and on with their drugs and it's happening nothin. Kinda reminds me of River Phoenix. My props go out to his family. Heath you were really cool…
I just saw this on the net, couldn't believe it. I thought it was some sick, cruel joke but it turns out to be true. He was way too young to go. And I didn't know he had a little girl. Sooooo so sad. May he find rest and peace wherever he is now.

OMG when i first found out about this i couldnt believe it was true! he was such a talented actor and good human being! Its so unfair because u have ppl like Amy Winehouse who blatantly take drugs every second of the day and nothing happens 2 them and then you have Heath who dies of an accidental drug overdose…where is the justice?
I loved Heath in "10 things I hate about you." He was so hot in "Casanova."

i'm completely shocked and deeply saddened by the news of heath's passing. it's all i've been able to think about since hearing it and i wanted to find somewhere where i could let my thoughts and feelings on this be known, and perez hilton is my favourite website and as a loyal and dedicated reader of this website it is only fitting that i use this as somewhat of an outlet. heath was an amazingly talented actor, whose talents shone in his magnificent and truly remarkable performance in "brokeback mountain," and there would no doubt have been more even more "miracles of acting" from heath had he not passed so suddenly at such a young age. words cannot describe how truly sad i feel for his family, especially young matilda, friends, and the world for losing a son, brother, father, friend and talent.
as a new zealander, neighbour of australia, i am so immensely proud of you heath. you will never, ever be forgotten. may you rest in peace angel.
