Scary Foreshadowing

This article from The New York Times published just two months ago shed a new light on the untimely death of Heath Ledger:
“I stressed out a little too much,” Mr. Ledger said.
He tends to do that. He is here in London filming the latest episode of the “Batman”franchise, “The Dark Knight.” (Mr. Bale, as it happens, plays Batman; Mr. Ledger plays the Joker.) It is a physically and mentally draining role — his Joker is a “psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy” he said cheerfully — and, as often happens when he throws himself into a part, he is not sleeping much.
“Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night,” he said. “I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.” One night he took an Ambien, which failed to work. He took a second one and fell into a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing.
Even as he spoke, Mr. Ledger was hard-pressed to keep still. He got up and poured more coffee. He stepped outside into the courtyard and smoked a cigarette. He shook his hair out from under its hood, put a rubber band around it, took out the rubber band, put on a hat, took off the hat, put the hood back up. He went outside and had another cigarette. Polite and charming, he nonetheless gave off the sense that the last thing he wanted to do was delve deep into himself for public consumption. “It can be a little distressing to have to overintellectualize yourself,” is how he put it, a little apologetically.

This is such a sad loss. He was so talented.
one would have to be on speed or uppers for 2 ambiens to put them asleep for only 2 hours. seriously, if you've ever taken it you know what i mean. it's sad, but maybe he shouldn't have been mixing meds and taking OTC with Rx. recipe for disaster.

Yep, very true! I am watching CNN right now and there is an analyst who is saying what you just wrote. He said that the role of "Joker" was mentally exhausting for him, and that he is the type of actor who likes to immerge himself into the character that he is going to perform. Because of that role, he was very exhausted and became TRAUMATIZED by that role. Poor Heath, RIP!
Man, I am chomping at the bit to hear more… Heath Ledger just seemed so great, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that it was at least somewhat accidental.

I wouldn't be the tiniest bit surprised if Ambien contributed to this death. Many people have a really bad reaction to it - suicidal thoughts, poor judgment, etc. That stuff is poison.

Wow, i was shocked when I read this on Perez's sight. I saw his first posting when he posted… is reporting that Heath Ledge has been found dead…..i was like umm i hope not heath ledger…and i checked everywhere else on the net but no one else was reporting it..however, 20mins later…and after Perez changing that post several times (in his second post he initially stated that one of the Olson twins were with him when he died) his death was confirmed. I think that Perez was in such a rush and shock to type that posting that he made the typo and wrote about that wild rumor concerning the Olson twins. Withing 10 minutes though he had changed that silly post.
Anyways, RIP Heath….you were a great actor, may he watch over his beautiful little girl from heaven
I've recently been diagonsed with bipolar disorder, and reading Heath's description of not being able to stay still, and not being able to fall asleep because his mind was so active (even with a sleeping pill, AMBIEN which is very strong) reminded me alot of myself. Bipolar disorder also has a high correlation with substance abuse and suicide.
You can't O.D. on Ambien, you just get really strung out. My roommate tried that, didn't work. I feel bad for his family, how tragic. His career really seemed to be taking off.

I still can't believe that he is actually dead. It's so sad. It reminds me so much of River Phoenix. River had a great career ahead of him and Heath was headed the same way. I'll pray for him and his family. It's just so sad! I will definitely have a Heath Ledger movie marathon tonight with my friends in memory of him.

When will someone tell the truth about prescription sleep aids. Many of them can and do make people suicidal. Where was the prescribing physician? They can promote jitteriness, suicidal dreams, and insomnia in some people. Why are side-effects played down and not monitored more?
