Making Fun Of Ledger's Death: Not So Funny!

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Australiastic > Media Minute > Heath Ledger

gibson__opt1.jpg

Petitions are being signed and offended parties are mobilizing in response to Fox News Radio host John Gibson's homophobic and inappropriate mocking of Heath Ledger's death.

We reported last night about Gibson's disgusting behavior and have vowed to boycott his show, which we've been on in the past, unless he apologizes.

Hopefully some action will be taken against him by the higher-ups at Fox.

Now, GLAAD has jumped into the fray as well.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has denounced Gibson's behavior and just released the following call to action, something we suggested our readers do earlier too.

They say:

"January 24, 2008

Fox News Host John Gibson Cruelly Mocks Heath Ledger's Death and his Role in Brokeback Mountain

In the wake of Heath Ledger's death, people around the world are mourning the gifted actor's passing and are expressing their appreciation for how he changed hearts and minds with his Oscar-nominated role as a gay cowboy in 2005's Brokeback Mountain.

In a stark and disturbing contrast, Fox News Radio host John Gibson cruelly mocked Ledger's death and his role in Brokeback Mountain during his Jan. 22 John Gibson Show radio broadcast. During the show, Gibson played an audio clip from the film of Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Jack, telling Ennis (played by Ledger), "I wish I knew how to quit you." Gibson then coldly quipped, "Well, he found out how to quit you." Then, after playing another audio clip from the movie of Ledger's character saying, "We're dead," Gibson mockingly said, "We're dead" and played the clip again.

“Gibson’s remarks are vulgar and disgusting,” said Rashad Robinson, GLAAD’s Senior Director of Media Programs. “It’s sickening that Gibson would exploit Heath Ledger’s tragic death to promote such hurtful intolerance. And to do so at a time when family and friends are grieving shows a level of insensitivity that is beyond the pale.”
Beyond his mockery of Ledger's role in Brokeback Mountain, Gibson called the actor a "weirdo" with "a serious drug problem," and callously speculated on the reasons Ledger might have committed suicide. Gibson had previously mocked Brokeback Mountain–calling it a "gay agenda movie" on his Fox News TV program in 2006.

This is just getting stupid! First off…Brokeback was just a stupid movie…Heath was an actor who played the part. Why is this being turned into a "homophobe" rant? a gifted actor died an untimely death…his family and friends are dealing with a tragic loss.He did other movies…quite frankly, whenever I think of Heath Ledger, I think of "First Knight" not "Brokeback Mountain."Ridiculing this man's death is very unprofessional and Gibson certainly should be taken to task for it.

Dear Sirs:It is incomprehensible to me that at a time when a family and fans all over the world are mourning his death a news station would allow these hurtful comments to be aired, let alone on a "news" channel.God forbid Mr. Gibson that one of YOUR chidlren, grandchildren, great great chandchildren or family members ever comes "out of the closet" and have to be put throught the humiliation that you have put so many through with your heartless comments. You speak of the Gay community as if they were the scum of the earth and the biggest problem to face America. Well, i'll let Fox in on a little secret, Being gay does not take away your constitutional rights, nor does it give anybody the right to single you out, so I hope the Gay community lashes out against Fox "News". Furthermore, I think America faces far greater problems such as drug abuse, a corrupt government (starting with its President), child molestation, housing problems, health issues, our soldiers away far too long fighting a war,not to mention the fact that we are heading into a recession.I guess it would have been too much for "Fox" news to have just given the family their condolences and kept the rest of their idiot remarks to themselves. You've become such a sorry excuse for a news station.

    To whom it may concern,

I am writing in response to John Gibson's remarks about actor Heath Ledger's death on January 22.

I know you are getting a lot of complaints and you might not even read this so……With regards to politics almost anything is fair….almost. However, this is the death of a 28 year old man and with that comes a certain decorum of humanity. This has obviously gone over Mr. Gibsons head. What ever cause of death becomes fact, he was a talented and seemingly devoted father, son, friend, and actor. No matter what one may think of someone they have at least the common sense to censor their ignorance for the sake of human compassion……Its just sad that Mr. Gibson felt he could share his ignorance with his audience and that it was acceptable to do so……..

If anyone reading this has lost someone close to them, they know that mockery of their loved one at that time, is and should be deemed unacceptable in any case.

I guess what it comes down too, is the fact that someone thought that the death of a 28 year old man was funny…..It's sad and thats all that needed to be said.

Re: Not EVERYTHING is racism – NO, I never said former President Clinton is a racist for falling asleep, nodding off, and blatantly checking his watch on Martin Luther King federal holiday and while MKL's son spoke about his father and civil rights in front of all the camera's for the world to remember. Had he been so tired and incapanle fo dignified behavior of an honored speaker, he should not have been placed directly in front of the camera's eye acting as if he were bored and uninterested.
I do not know what to make of his inapproperate and disrespectful behavior towards MLK for I am not Mr. Clitnton. If the Queen Of England at 80 plus years old can stay awake and be attentive during her long list of engagements surely Bill Clitnton a man thrity five years younger should have at least the energies unless of course he is very gravely ill. His uber red purple face and white hands are indicative of his very poor heart condition.

I can not believe the comments of that sickening homophobe, what an absolute tosser, its dispicable and actually made me feel sick, with his hidden glee at Heath ledgers death, his comments were horrendous and showed him to be a narrow minded homophobe that cant even respect the dead. lets get that evil shit fired.

Wow. Thank you so much for reminding us what a truly disgusting world we live in. As soon as I read this I immediately e-mailed each and everyone of them, and told them how sickening it is that they would allow such hate to be shown on national tv. I am so glad that you have the balls to let public know how you feel, and also that you are so willing to put yourself out there when most celebrities just follow the masses. I am so angry, and I hope that Heath Ledger's soul will truly be at peace, and i hope his family, friends, and especially his little girl will be able to find comfort.

Perez, keep on posting the appropriate email contacts so we can send emails letting them know how we feel. Isn't it what it is.. a gay agenda movie… there are hundreds of agenda categories and one should not be reprimanded for stating the obvious…. it was about two gay cowboys… come on… lets not be so sensitive and blind to the reality of what the movie promoted and popularized. Perez, you are Cuban, Me Too…. wouldn't you be mad if someone made a movie popularizing Fidel Castro stating how wonderful a dictator he has been? Of course you would, but you wouldn't prevent it from happening… its free speech… if this reporter is not reporting correctly people wont watch… if they agree with him, which primarily people in this country do, then oh well to bad, so sad RIP HL… don't do drugs!!!!!!! 527

Not for nothing Perez, but a lot of stuff you say about celebrities is way more offensive than what this dude said… and while I agree that the death of anyone, celebrity or non-celeb is sad and tragic at such a young age, nobody forced those pills down Heath Ledgers throat. All the doctors are saying it couldn't be an accidental overdose on sleeping pills, and that in order to die you'd need to take like a 15 or 20 pill cocktail… I think it's sad that he died, but it was a waste. There are a lot of people out there in the world who have a lot less privilege and opportunity than Heath Ledger did, and if someone on Fox News radio doesn't appreciate him, so be it. I know you're heard of the 1st Amendment, so just shut up and get over it.

For Mr. Hilton to call for a boycott of a man for making commentary on the sad state of celebrity is nothing but hypocrisy. Mr. Hilton makes his living off celebrity tragedy. So what if Mr. Hilton didn't show Mr. Ledger's body being wheeled out. He has no problem publishing video of Ms. Winehouse using drugs or a cartoon of Ms. Spears not wanting Mr. Ledger's death to take the spotlight from her. How is this any different?

    557

John Gibson apparently fancies himself to be the buttoned down acerbic version of Howard Stern, but there is no comparison. While Howard is hysterically funny, his off-color remarks are tempered by his humanity - which manages to sneak through his facade. John Gibson, on the other hand, is a just plain un-funny, homophobic stiff. In his pathetic attempts to be shocking and amusing, the remarks he made about Heath Ledger and his role in "Broke Back Mountain" came off as stupid and insensitive, especially in light of Mr. Ledger's untimely death. Don Imus got thrown off the air for using racial buzz words and making stupid remarks about "Nappy headed hos". In American, it seems we have come to come accept gay bashing remarks, while being repelled by racist remarks. There are people like Mr. Gibson who feel the need to kick and denigrate a certain segment of our society. Mr. Gibson and his ilk have moved on from blacks to gays. Anti-gay blather should not be tolerated, just as racist remarks should not be tolerated. What Mr. Gibson said should certainly earn him the same kind of vacation Don Imus got - with a no-return ticket.

Mr. Gibson's biggest crime was not being funny. I wonder if it's true - as internet rumor has suggested - that Mr. Gibson is really a self-loathing closeted gay man, and that's why he spews this anti-gay venom. Think Pastor Ted Haggard. Mr. Gibson doth protest to much.

Gay-bashing is the last bastion of a bigot.

Oberman is a cancer and needs to be cut out, that idiot bemoans Fox Network more then he reports the news because he can't beat O'reily and that he is part of one of the least trusted networks in the publics eye.

HOW UTTERLY PATHETIC of Fox News to use the death of respected actor, who mearly played the role of a homosexual, to bolster another of their right wing stances. Not only is it disrespectful, hateful, and mean, it's even more disturbing to know that millions of American's watch and listen to the bullshit that is broadcast from their bastion of idiocy. No apololgy, other than voluntarily blowing up their entire network, would make right the wrongs they commit on a daily basis.

Why isn't anyone mad at Perez Hilton for the jokes he made about Heath Ledger yesterday? Go back to his post with the pic of Victoria Beckham, Claudia Schiffer and Dita… he makes a joke about Heath Ledger in his caption. Should be petition Perez now or demand his site be removed? I'm suprised that Perez, who needs FREE SPEECh to operate his own site, has the nerve to complain about someone else who does it.

After hearing your comments on the untimely passing of Heath Ledger I have to ask this.

Do you have a family? Have you EVER lost someone that you loved and cared for so much that words can not do justice of how you felt about person in your life?

Do you even have a heart?

Karma is very real and it's coming for your tasteless punk ass.

WHEN YOU WATCH AMERICAN IDOL YOU'RE PAYING JOHN GIBSON'S (NOT TO MENTION HANNITY'S AND O'REILLY'S) SALARIES!!! AMERICAN IDOL IS BEYOND STUPID. NO WINNER EVER MAKES IT IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WITH PERHAPS THE EXCEPTION OF KELLY CLARKSON. ALTHOUGH HER CAREER WAS EXTREMELY SHORT-LIVED. AMERICAN IDOL "LOSERS" LIKE JENNIFER HUDSON AND DAUGHTRY HAVE REAL MUSIC INDUSTRY RECOGNITION. THE SHOW IS CRAP. IT TOOK ME YEARS AND COUNTLESS WASTED HOURS TO FINALLY REALIZE IT.

Well all I know the point I was trying to make is that everyone is so quick to fire people for insulting black people. How about gay people (who I don't care to advocate about much I just have a problem how black people are always complaining about they same bullshit they do to other people).

Frankly, Gibson's joke wasn't funny at all. Whatever they do or whether he apologizes so what I don't care but it was a really bad joke. I mean I'm on a messageboard where they're making pictures of Ledger with sleeping pills and captions yeah it's tasteless humor but its just random people on the internet. But now you have this radio personality who not only shows no respect for the dead but is basically saying he's dead because he's gay.

What about Heath Ledger's insensitive comments about the state of WV banning his movie.

Ledger came under fire after he was quoted in January 2006 in Australia's Herald Sun as saying that he heard that West Virginia had banned Brokeback Mountain, which it had not. (A cinema in Utah had banned the film.)[18] He also referred to West Virginia as having had lynchings as recently as the 1980s which was disputed by archivists and historians, who say that the last extralegal public hanging in the state occurred in 1931

    Here's my angry email:

John Gibson is a xenophobic, homophobic, racist, ignorant piece of
trash. It is both outrageous and offensive to me that you would allow
him to remain on the air as he has REPEATEDLY made comments of such an
extreme and politically incorrect nature. Gibson takes advantage of
tragedies to spew vile, hateful comments in the national media and you
as members of the Fox News network are ENABLING him in his efforts to
spread evil throughout the world. I cannot understand where you even
BEGIN to think that this is acceptable. Although I found your network
questionable before, I now formally renounce any viewership from which
you would benefit, whether it be television, internet, radio, or any
other form. I will also boycott any product that I find to be
    associated with your network.

Gibson should be strung up for being a tool without decency; however, I find it extremely hypocritical of you, Perez, to 'censor' anyone. Just so I know in advance…When Britney overdoses, can we light the torches and get ready to verbally lynch you as you see so fit to do to others? Again, Gibson, as well as his comments, were vile and disgusting, but freedom for all or freedom for none. Can't have it both ways.

I am upset with the inappropriate comments made by John Gibson. I think he owes the family an apology. I am a Heath Ledger fan and I am shocked and saddened by his untimely death. I do not approve with Gibson's remarks however this is going way out of control. It's wrong when something like this is taken to the extreme. Nobody can say anything anymore (except for Perez) without upsetting an entire community. Why is that? Why should some people have freedom of speech and yet others are protected?? Perez is laughing all the way to the bank… deposit that $ 85,000.00 yet Perez?? Everybody needs to lighten up… it's not always personal… it's not always your fight and sometimes you just need to turn your head. RIP HEATH!! You are going to be missed.

why am I not surprised that he's employed by Fox "News". it's a bullshit propaganda-based corporation. 10% of their daily broadcast is rehashing of the day's news from a conservative perspective, and 90% editorials hosted by 50 yr-old affluent, prejudiced, Christian men. If Heath Ledger hadn't done BrokeBack Mountain, Gibson would never have touched this story. I'm sure in Gibson's warped idea of Christian faith, mocking the dead is less heinous than mocking his homosexual bretheren.
