Heath Ledger's friends and loves ones gathered at a private viewing in New York City on Friday.
Unfortunately for them, their private moment of grieving was tainted by hordes of paparazzi and mainstream media outside the funeral home.
The actor's body is now on it's way back to Australia.
Ledger is expected to be buried in his hometown of Perth.

Light a candle in a nearby church and say your goodbyes that way. Or rent one of his movies and watch it and cry with a pint of ben and jerrys ice cream. Those would be appropriate ways to say goodbye to a man you don't know.
The memorial should be grieving friends and family. People who knew him and loved him. And like his father said, not many people REALLY knew him.

Here is the thing … I work next door to the funeral home as a dog sitter. The paparazzi have been there since yesterday morning as well as many "fans". It just heart wrenching the amount of disrespect people have. As I got to the dog's apartment this morning I saw a crazy amount of people who shouldn't have been there. And as an answer to a previous comment … I didn't see any protesters but then again I was only outside for a total of 15 minutes while walking the dog so I really can't say.
May he rest in peace and God bless those with broken hearts because of this tragedy.

People were interested in him through his life and career and it's only natural that people want to see right to the end.
It's not fair to shut the public out and just leave it that one day he is here and the next day he is gone and life should go on.
People need closure over the death of celebrities they didn't know, and being informed about his end will bring that closure.
That's why people have been gathering outside his apparentment and ventured out to lay flowers for him, and watch his movies.

RIP Heath! Taken too soon. I'm glad he is going to be placed in his home town. If anyone is a huge fan, they could go there to visit, and maybe then the hateful people that wanted to protest his funeral will stay away. His little girl will have more than enough money to visit him when ever she wants!

yes, this is very sad, but it is getting a little too much. Enough is enough. I like Heath as an actor and felt bad for his bad fortune, but ENOUGH already. I wish that the papparazzi waiting outside the funeral home and stalking the family members could just stop and imagine for one second how it must feel. Someone's son, brother, father of a beautiful little girl, and former life partner is gone forever and nothing will bring him back. It literally made me sick to my stomach watching all of the photographers fighting to get a photo of Heath's coffin being placed into the back of the hearse. Is this what our society has become? Where is the basic human decency?
I understand these people take photos to make money, but I think a certain line has to be drawn. Just imagine what Heath's family is going through…not only have they lost their only son/brother, but they also see these disturbing images on tv of Heath in a body bag being taken out of his apt and then at the funeral home. Those are just totally insensitive shots!
Heath is on his way home now and I hope that he and his family are given the privacy and respect that they deserve.

Why does society obsess over the death of a celebrity? The publicity over the death of Heath Ledger shook me up, then quickly pissed me off. This man was an ACTOR for Pete's sake. He did not come up with world peace, the resolution to hunger in Africa or come up with a cure for AIDS. He lived a lavish lifestyle in his many houses and partied lalal la la la in celebland.
Why must the world shed tears over him so much and publicise his death, when millions of people have died who have given back so much to the world in a positive way? I am convinced the only reason why his death is being covered so much is because he starred in ONE good film. Okay, yippy skippy. That and because he has a cute face. Big deal. What else has he done? Starred in other huge blockbuster films that were life altering? Nope. So, what is it?
