Poor Haitians Resort to Eating Dirt
It was lunchtime in one of Haiti's worst slums, and Charlene Dumas was eating mud. With food prices rising, Haiti's poorest can't afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies. Charlene, 16 with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country's central plateau.
The mud has long been prized by pregnant women and children here as an antacid and source of calcium. But in places like Cite Soleil, the oceanside slum where Charlene shares a two-room house with her baby, five siblings and two unemployed parents, cookies made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening have become a regular meal.
"When my mother does not cook anything, I have to eat them three times a day," Charlene said. Her baby, named Woodson, lay still across her lap, looking even thinner than the slim 6 pounds 3 ounces he weighed at birth.
Though she likes their buttery, salty taste, Charlene said the cookies also give her stomach pains. "When I nurse, the baby sometimes seems colicky too," she said.
Food prices around the world have spiked because of higher oil prices, needed for fertilizer, irrigation and transportation. Prices for basic ingredients such as corn and wheat are also up sharply, and the increasing global demand for biofuels is pressuring food markets as well.
The problem is particularly dire in the Caribbean, where island nations depend on imports and food prices are up 40 percent in places.
The global price hikes, together with floods and crop damage from the 2007 hurricane season, prompted the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency to declare states of emergency in Haiti and several other Caribbean countries. Caribbean leaders held an emergency summit in December to discuss cutting food taxes and creating large regional farms to reduce dependence on imports.
At the market in the La Saline slum, two cups of rice now sell for 60 cents, up 10 cents from December and 50 percent from a year ago. Beans, condensed milk and fruit have gone up at a similar rate, and even the price of the edible clay has risen over the past year by almost $1.50. Dirt to make 100 cookies now costs $5, the cookie makers say.
Still, at about 5 cents apiece, the cookies are a bargain compared to food staples. About 80 percent of people in Haiti live on less than $2 a day and a tiny elite controls the economy.
Merchants truck the dirt from the central town of Hinche to the La Saline market, a maze of tables of vegetables and meat swarming with flies. Women buy the dirt, then process it into mud cookies in places such as Fort Dimanche, a nearby shanty town.
Carrying buckets of dirt and water up ladders to the roof of the former prison for which the slum is named, they strain out rocks and clumps on a sheet, and stir in shortening and salt. Then they pat the mixture into mud cookies and leave them to dry under the scorching sun.
The finished cookies are carried in buckets to markets or sold on the streets.
A reporter sampling a cookie found that it had a smooth consistency and sucked all the moisture out of the mouth as soon as it touched the tongue. For hours, an unpleasant taste of dirt lingered.
Assessments of the health effects are mixed. Dirt can contain deadly parasites or toxins, but can also strengthen the immunity of fetuses in the womb to certain diseases, said Gerald N. Callahan, an immunology professor at Colorado State University who has studied geophagy, the scientific name for dirt-eating.
Haitian doctors say depending on the cookies for sustenance risks malnutrition.
"Trust me, if I see someone eating those cookies, I will discourage it," said Dr. Gabriel Thimothee, executive director of Haiti's health ministry.
Marie Noel, 40, sells the cookies in a market to provide for her seven children. Her family also eats them.
"I'm hoping one day I'll have enough food to eat, so I can stop eating these," she said. "I know it's not good for me."
LOTS of aid has gone to Haiti; you can teach a man to fish or farm, but you can't MAKE him do it. The article is misleading; Black peoples worldwide have a penchant for eating "dirt." It's actually Kaolin that they eat. It's especially prevelant in pregnant Women. The article is slightly sensationalized. Haiti is surrounded by WATER. Water contains fishes. Grab a spear, folks!

as much as this is true and there are poor people who are malnourished, this problem is caused by the United Nations who have total control over the country. I know this because I have lived there for 13 years in my life and my parents are haitian. From refusing trade in 1804, invading in 1914 (stayed for 19 years) and occupying the entire island, tracing the border between the DR and Haiti, set up puppet presidents who they backed with plenty of money, invading in 1994, recently helped kidnap a president because he represented a threat and actually preached democracy to the people and spoke against the evil deeds the big nations of this world had done. If you had any clue, you'll know that they have set numerous embargoes that stunt the growth of the country, most recently in 2004 freezing the country's access to the world bank.

For the ignorant minds here, I'd like to assert that this is not anything new. I resent the articles implying that this is a new drastic measure taken to deal with hunger. Sure, in America, this might seem weird to you, but these things called "calcaire" are made from the rock "calcaire (French word)" which has a lot of calcium and pregnant women are usually the ones to munch on them from time to time. Relying on this for daily sustenance is very discouraged, I'll have to agree with that, but most everone in Haiti has tasted this, from the dirt poor Haitians to the mulatto and arab elites. Its taste is hard to describe, for it is like a very fine power, but buttery. I believe that this is something the Americans just found about, and now they're trying to get their bucks worth of the story. Again, this is not anything new. Haitians make calcaire cookies to eat and thai people eat crickets. Different worlds and perspectives.
I am a 38 year old mother of two. This morning I was reading the news online and came across this terrible story of the hunger in Haiti. I shared it with my children and they wanted to do something to help. THANK YOU for your link! We will get on after they get home from school and donate.

As much as I want to help the world maybe I am selfish but, look around, we have people right HERE in AMERICA facing the same kind of circumstances, maybe not to the direness of these people but, still, grocery prices here are also on the rise, so is fuel. Where is the help for the people here. Granted we have food banks, and charitites but, if you did your research you would know that a lot of charities have guidelines which you must fall into to get help, and its usually a one time deal… We need to take care of our own before we go off to another country again and take care of someone elses problems. This is terrible. Another reason why I hate religion. Just reading the post Perez posted from Nancy Cartwright donating 10 million effortlessly to the stupid Church of Scientology.. when this money could go to help these poor Haitian children. All we can say is.."That sucks! Or how sad!!" and go back to drinking our lattes. Everyone is guilty of it. Why must we help everyone but ourselves? Uh, remember New Orleans that continue to have sections of swamp that contains a still partial standing house? My family lost 3 houses there and we still haven't seen a penny from the government…and all the while the insurance is blaming the "wind" instead of water…whatever….and why do these people still continue to have kid after kid after kid! To all posters stating that the US should send Haitians birth control so they stop having too many babies:
I'd like to remind you that the Bush Administration DOES NOT ALLOW programs to promote birth control. Organizations that assist with sexual health, AIDS epidemic, etc. only recieve US funding if they maintain an abstinence only message. There are cultures where it is hard for a woman to practice abstinence because they are expected to submit to men.
If the US wants to promote condoms or oral contraceptives, they must rely on private groups. If you say, "Well fine, the government should stay out of it. Churches can take on charity projects." I don't think the "Church" will promote birth control either, seeing as the majority of Catholics and Evangelical Christians believe every seed is sacred and has a right to life.
