Poor Haitians Resort to Eating Dirt
It was lunchtime in one of Haiti's worst slums, and Charlene Dumas was eating mud. With food prices rising, Haiti's poorest can't afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies. Charlene, 16 with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country's central plateau.
The mud has long been prized by pregnant women and children here as an antacid and source of calcium. But in places like Cite Soleil, the oceanside slum where Charlene shares a two-room house with her baby, five siblings and two unemployed parents, cookies made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening have become a regular meal.
"When my mother does not cook anything, I have to eat them three times a day," Charlene said. Her baby, named Woodson, lay still across her lap, looking even thinner than the slim 6 pounds 3 ounces he weighed at birth.
Though she likes their buttery, salty taste, Charlene said the cookies also give her stomach pains. "When I nurse, the baby sometimes seems colicky too," she said.
Food prices around the world have spiked because of higher oil prices, needed for fertilizer, irrigation and transportation. Prices for basic ingredients such as corn and wheat are also up sharply, and the increasing global demand for biofuels is pressuring food markets as well.
The problem is particularly dire in the Caribbean, where island nations depend on imports and food prices are up 40 percent in places.
The global price hikes, together with floods and crop damage from the 2007 hurricane season, prompted the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency to declare states of emergency in Haiti and several other Caribbean countries. Caribbean leaders held an emergency summit in December to discuss cutting food taxes and creating large regional farms to reduce dependence on imports.
At the market in the La Saline slum, two cups of rice now sell for 60 cents, up 10 cents from December and 50 percent from a year ago. Beans, condensed milk and fruit have gone up at a similar rate, and even the price of the edible clay has risen over the past year by almost $1.50. Dirt to make 100 cookies now costs $5, the cookie makers say.
Still, at about 5 cents apiece, the cookies are a bargain compared to food staples. About 80 percent of people in Haiti live on less than $2 a day and a tiny elite controls the economy.
Merchants truck the dirt from the central town of Hinche to the La Saline market, a maze of tables of vegetables and meat swarming with flies. Women buy the dirt, then process it into mud cookies in places such as Fort Dimanche, a nearby shanty town.
Carrying buckets of dirt and water up ladders to the roof of the former prison for which the slum is named, they strain out rocks and clumps on a sheet, and stir in shortening and salt. Then they pat the mixture into mud cookies and leave them to dry under the scorching sun.
The finished cookies are carried in buckets to markets or sold on the streets.
A reporter sampling a cookie found that it had a smooth consistency and sucked all the moisture out of the mouth as soon as it touched the tongue. For hours, an unpleasant taste of dirt lingered.
Assessments of the health effects are mixed. Dirt can contain deadly parasites or toxins, but can also strengthen the immunity of fetuses in the womb to certain diseases, said Gerald N. Callahan, an immunology professor at Colorado State University who has studied geophagy, the scientific name for dirt-eating.
Haitian doctors say depending on the cookies for sustenance risks malnutrition.
"Trust me, if I see someone eating those cookies, I will discourage it," said Dr. Gabriel Thimothee, executive director of Haiti's health ministry.
Marie Noel, 40, sells the cookies in a market to provide for her seven children. Her family also eats them.
"I'm hoping one day I'll have enough food to eat, so I can stop eating these," she said. "I know it's not good for me."

However, i would like to point out that, that cookie in the article is made of calcaire, and it is something that every kid eats in Haiti. I also checked out this organization - they give 100% of the donations to the kids - unlike some other nonprofits that have six figure salaries and other luxuries. The United Way has to be the WORST non-profit with bloated overhead, 150K executives salaries, etc. Don't give to them - give to organizations like this that aren't greedy and directly help those most in need.
It's hard to imagine another country resorting to such low standards all for the sake of survival. For Americans, it can be hard to imagine anyone we personally know going through any similar difficulties. For other countries that are not approached with welfare or any system of aid- I believe it is part of our natural ability that yearns to help these people live better lives. I think if donations were made towards the benefit of producing a system of aid for other countries, there would be less suffering!

I am sure you did not travel to Haiti yourself Perez. I am also sure that you have more important things to write about than to defame Haitian people by saying that they eat dirt. No one eats dirt. Actually this is quite common although it is usually seen in pregnant women who don't eat dirt, but rather clay.

Its economy is desperate in part because after it became the first free black nation, it was boycotted by nearly every other country in the world, nations which feared for the stability of their own slaves. In more modern times, Haiti has suffered the effects of deforestation and barren soil, making the formerly agricultural country's most obvious means of self-sufficiency, the sugarcane crops, virtually unsustainable.
While it is every nation's responsibility to take care of its own people, and Haiti's politics have added immeasurably to its suffering, it is our moral responsibility not to judge what we can never fully understand. I think most can agree that it is unconscionable to sit on piles of our money and believe ourselves justified in our indulgence simply because we "earned" it. Workers in the diamond mines in the Congo work too, much harder than we ever could, and get pennies and violence in return. Is this laziness, or are we lazy when we choose comfort over moral responsibility? We should be grateful to have been born in a country where there exists money to be earned and industries to work in and share however we can.

Some of you people are making VERY ignorant comments. If you going to make accusations against a people and a country you know nothing about, at least be educated. I have been to Haiti 3 times, serving at orphanages and helping the people. They are a beautiful people who will willing give to you out of their lack. We don't make much money, but are helping the situation. We are adopting 2 children from one of the orphanages and support some of the others. The problems are not caused by "rampant sex and too many babies being born." The problems are caused by a highly corrupt government, a minute but powerful rich upperclass and the extreme downward spiral of poverty caused by their independence from France. Let's remember, less than 100 years ago, Haiti was a sought after tourist destination, called the Pearl of the Caribbean, the largest exporter of coffee and a lush paradise. Now, children as young as 3 roam the streets as orphans, often beaten and killed or bought and sold as slaves to their own people. This is not a joke or a matter to be taken lightly. These people literally ARE in our backyard and we need to help - in any small way possible.

What I would like to know is what kind of government Haiti has, as THEY should be taking care of their OWN people. They wanted their hands clean of the "white" French and the U.S., so why should we give them help? Once again, we're the hated ones, yet we're also the saviors.

Who will open factories? Who will make jobs? who will finance research? who will run the stock markets which, by the way, are the main way the most advanced hospitals in the world make money…not from patients. Thanks so much for the information on how we can all help. I was sitting having my usual coffee and bagel in a local coffee shop and just felt sick when I read this report in the local paper.
I was wondering how to assist and your link was great - meant I could make a donation to people who really are making a difference there.

I lived in Haiti for several months, and it is way worse then anything a person can imagine, People tend to think poverty like that is only in Africa but its almost within shooting distance of Miami.
