Paparazzo quits in protest at Britney 'hounding'
When paparazzi have a crisis of conscience over the wellbeing of their celebrity prey, events have clearly reached a serious level. So it is with Britney Spears, the troubled pop star and America's favourite tabloid fodder, who was back under psychiatric evaluation in a Los Angeles hospital last night after the latest in a series of highly publicised meltdowns.
As the singer's family and manager bickered over the right to direct her treatment after a court-ordered commitment into mental health care, a British photographer who has quit the chasing media pack warned the hounding could kill her.
Nick Stern has resigned from Splash, a Los Angeles-based, British-owned celebrity picture agency, in protest at the "aggressive" tactics employed in pursuing Spears, and predicted tragedy.
"Directly or indirectly, Britney is going to come to some horrific end, or a member of the public will," he said. "It's not what's being done, it's the way it's being done. As she continues to deteriorate psychologically, I just can't see a positive way out."
The biggest threat, Stern said, came from the high-speed convoy of photographers' cars and motorcycles that follow Spears' every move through Los Angeles. The pursuit reached a new frenzy in the early hours of yesterday when the paparazzi tailed an ambulance and police escort taking the 26-year-old singer to hospital for the second time this month.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the trail of emergency vehicles that took Spears to the UCLA Medical Centre stretched longer than a football field. In an operation conducted with military precision, police and medical crews spoke secretively of "delivering the package", in a failed attempt to throw photographers off the scent.
"The paps are completely out of control," said Stern, 43. "It's not unusual to have 20 or 30 cars pursuing her at any one time. It's become acceptable to drive at 80mph down the wrong side of the street into oncoming traffic. I was horrified at what goes on. It's so aggressive, there are fights and crashes and slashed tyres. I felt I needed to say something."
Spears has exhibited increasingly bizarre behaviour in the past 12 months and has lost visitation rights to her two children, Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, fathered by her estranged husband, Kevin Federline. The two are engaged in a custody battle.
After the singer's admission to hospital yesterday, a judge at the Los Angeles county superior court signed an order committing her to a mandatory three-day evaluation, after which the stay could be extended to 14 days.
According to sources, Spears' family had planned the intervention for two weeks with the cooperation of the police and hospital but against the wishes of the singer's manager, Sam Lutfi. In recent weeks, friends and family have said they believe she is suffering from bipolar disorder, which is characterised by abrupt mood swings, or other psychiatric problems.
The circus continued in the hospital corridor early yesterday with a heated argument between Lutfi and Lynne and Jamie Spears. According to the celebrity website tmz.com, doctors are now "cooperating fully" with the singer's parents.
In London, meanwhile, the Rambert Dance Company has produced a music and dance interpretation of Spears' troubles, Meltdown, that it intends to perform tonight at the Southbank Centre. The show ends with her carried off by dancers dressed as doctors in white coats.
Britney and family need to leave hollywood and get back to reality for a change. Take a hint from Shania Twain and buy a home in Sweden or something, FAR FAR away from the media!!!

I have bipolar disorder and it is so unfair for someone to have to feel this way. I totally hope she gets the treatment she needs. It didn't work for me but I hope she gets it and it works. I hate to see others in that much pain. Mental disease is not biased. It doesn't matter if your rich or poor. Get well Brit. You can give hope to others that don't feel treatment works.
I am glad Mr. Stern is speaking out. The paparazzi are out of control. They are endangering the lives of the celebrities they seek out as well as the general public who gets caught in the middle when the paparazzi are chasing for a photograph even if it may put people in a dangerous sitation. People need to think very carefully about what they are doing and how their actions may affect bystanders.
Last time I checked it's 2008 and addiction is considered a disease…so I don't care if she's bipolar or a meth addict or has breast cancer…the woman is sick and deserves a little respect and sympathy.

I'm n ot a doctor…but something tells me it might not be bi-polar but schizhophrenia (sp?)…I don't like to put that out there to the universe but from personal experience (not being that I am that) butI know someone who's daughter was in a high pressure situation at college and went off the rails…she called her grandmother and said she wanted to have sex with her….true story…her mother killed her and herself while her husband was in the hospital recovering from a heart attack…he found out later…he eventually ended up drinking himself to death…his surviving daughter is a doctor…not that this has anything to do with this…but it strikes me seeing what's happening with Britney…
I'm glad her parents did this, this will hopefully help her, there was no other way, now they need to find a way to get a restraining order against all paparazzi from following her while she is of fragile mind, this is not a good thing for anyone especially her, i know a lot of people say she courts the attention but she is not well and she can't be making rational decisions, she can't control such an illness on her own, and it's influenced a lot by what goes on around her, i am on her side and her families, i truely wish her well and would like to see her healthy again, people who have never experieced a mental illness really shouldn't comment on her actions as they'll never know what it's like, it is not fun for the person at all or for ones who are looking on.

She is sick, unstable and needs this help. People should back off and let her live in peace so that she can get better. If she truely does have a mental disorder she is not responsible for all her actions and that needs to be realized and people need to stop saying such harsh words about her. I have to agree. This will only lead to tragedy. I can't fathom the desire of these assholes to follow her around town chasing her in high speeds through the city. Its dangerous! I applaude Mr. Stern for his actions and hopefully others will follow in his footsteps and back off these celebrities on their own without the law stepping in and forcing them. Re: a – You may be interested to know both bipolar and schizophrenia are seizure disorders. And certain forms of brain damage can induce these seizures disorders. It could happen to anyone, really. Many times poorly trained psychiatrists prescribe the wrong meds to these people and then patients act worse. If you would like to learn more, please read all of my scattered comments under "Liz" in Perez's "Bradnan:Together Again" story a few pages back. I even listed some articles. I have a lot of posts, so if you are interested start at the beginning of comments section.
And a–even if Brit did drugs and gave herself brain damage (who knows?), no one deserves hate for being injured. And Brit's sex life is kind of irrelevant, (unless she cheated on you…but i doubt that.) There is one good thing that could come out of the papp. being so overinvolved in Britney's life. Osama Lutfi can't blackmail her by threatening to show the world her secrets. But, I'm sure that there's a lot about him that could still come to the surface. I hope he realizes that what goes around comes around!
The situation with the constant stalking of Britney Spears' life has gotten completely out of control with the Paparazzi and something has to be done. Government has got to see that this is serious and needs to be addressed with some laws to protect both the Celebrity and the public. Paparazzi endangers everyone with their carelessness stalking Celebrity's especially with their crazy driving pursuits, making scenes in public, their affect on businesses, breaking into the privacy of their homes and camping out in their neighborhoods. Whether she is bi-polar or has any mental illness, it's nobody's business but hers and hers alone to deal with and it can be a long hard road to discover and get treatment. I know from personal experience. Leave her alone to deal with her health and give her public support instead of criticism. Bipolar disorder is a disease and can take years to get medicated properly. She can't help what she doesn't know. Hopefully now she'll get the right treatment and get her life back in order. Especially for her two children that really need their Mom. She's young and she'll realize it in time and I'm sure she'll do the right thing for her children that she loves so much as well as her career. So LEAVE HER ALONE and let her want to get help. She will, she's got too much at stake and her demons will be dealt with eventually but not without her peace of mind and privacy.
