Britney's stay at UCLA Medical Center's psych ward is going to be extended.
Spears, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, will be staying in the hospital for another 14 days.
And hopefully she will receive some kind of outpatient treatment after that!

Great, she's getting help. Day 3? Day 4? 2 wks? It's gonna take longer than that. If she's really diagnosed with a mental illness, she'll have it her WHOLE LIFE. And unless she removes herself from LA and the limelight, I don't believe one second she'll have the stability around her to take care of herself with her illness.

I still think it is more than bipolar disorder. She likely also has a personality disorder, too. I predict she will become the poster child for a very unknown disorder called "borderline personality disorder". I hope that they keep her long enough to get the medication right–that is HUGE–and that she will be in the hands of an excellent psychiatrist for a long time. Also, it wouldn't hurt for her to be in a longer residential treatment center, out of the limelight and in family therapy, too. And the paps need to back off. Now they'll have to do that. But Perez, what will you do without Britney to write about every day?

Good! She needs to stay there as long as possible. As long as it takes to get well. I too suffer from a mental disorder, not one as bad as hers, but I have severe anxiety and it took me a melt down to get help, I had hyperventalated and had to go to the hospital twice, lost a bunch of weight, stopped leaving my house, and didnt want to be left alone. Now I'm going to therapy and it really does work. You never are completely cured but it can help you lead a normal life. She also has to make sure she takes her meds! I do, and I dont think I can funtion (yet) without them. Just cause you feel better doesnt mean you are.
Re: suzycat – Lithium does not cause weight gain in all patients and combined with a good antidepressant it can be LIFE SAVING. It is still the best med out there, IMHO, for mania. Depakote sucks. If she stays away from junk food and sugary foods and caffeine and eats a healthy balanced diet of fruits, veggies, grains and proteins, she can control it very well. When she gets on the right meds she'll probably feel like a new person entirely.

I have become so used to knowing what brit brit has been up to I'm going to miss her over (hopefully) the next few weeks- and hopefully the next year or so.

Re: rod – in terms of diagnosis it is not necessary that someone be removed from all meds before diagnosis can occur. However, I might agree with some of the other comments suggesting an axis II diagnosis over axis I. Perhaps she is just suffering from substance induced psychosis or mania as a function of substance abuse.

I hope they have some really exceptional staff there @UCLA. I am sure they do, but 14 days? That is just not long enough. She needs about 6 mos of treatment if she is withdrawing from multiple substances. Outpatient care is not an option, because that is voluntary. She will not do anything on a voluntary basis. Lynn & Jamie, it's time to practice some really tough love! Get that Woman put in a good program that is as far from California & Hollyweird as possible. Let her experience real life again.
Let's see here….I was committed as a 21 years old, 12 years ago now & the doctors then diagnosed myself with Bi polar also…Funny thing is I had a major problem with drink, drugs & downers but according to the medical experts that was a part of my problem not the cause of my problems. I spent 16 awful brain numbing days being confined to a locked ward with nothing to do but "talk " to the other patients or mostly sadistic staff, with a daily 'chat' with the doctor thrown in for good measure. They only let my out because I insisted that I would be going to court if they kept me locked up any longer.
Anyway I never had contact with mental health ever again, probably due to the fact that I stopped the pill taking straight away & finally gave up the drink & dope 8 years later. I have never suffered from "manic " or depressive episodes since, so what does that tell me? Stop the pills & the obviously drink & dope & you will be as close to normal as you can be Britney.
PS I have pretty much been in therapy since then too as my family upbringing was pretty dysfunctional as well, which I sure didn't help me to be normal either.I'm now a working single mum of two aged 5 & 7, earning a good living doing a job I love while part time studying.If you stay on the meds Brit YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO FEEL COMPLETE & SANE.

there is no history of bipolar in her family and there would be. but there is a long history of addiction , father , uncle , grandparent.

A good example was Elvis Presley, who was known to do things like get his family up in the middle of the night and take them to an amusement park. If he was happy, he wanted everyone around him to be happy and if he was unhappy he wanted them to be unhappy.

This is my first visit to the site, I saw it on one of those celebrity programmes they play late at night, and i'm not usually one to comment on things, but theres such a pattern here.
People not just having positivity and patience.
Everyone who has suffered a mental disorder, is convinced that this girl is suffering the same one as them (many symptoms are similar for lots of problems).
Those who have seen people go through bad substance abuse, see the symptoms and are convinced she must be suffering this.
As well as those who have other opinions.
In all honesty, it's very unlikely that somebody with so many issues and who has had such an ”abnormal” (best word I could find) life in many respects, to have just ONE problem.
I think if people who are fans and want to see a stronger, recovered person come out of this, then some simple positive thoughts and patience will go a long way. Public diagnosis by forum discussion is surely a kind of madness in itself!
Who knows, in a couple of years we might see her on the Letterman show looking well and happy, explaining that the issues she had were something completely different to what anyone thought.
The important thing for fans is not what is wrong, but that it is put right in a proper and private way.

I dated a bipolar for quite some time (3 1/2 years, not including the lead up time to it). All I can say to the speculation going on in this thread about Titney's mental illness is that Bipolar comes before the severe drug use. It is not intentional–often, people start self-medicating. It also has nothing to do with whether you are famous or poor or spoiled or neglected.
Lithium is scary ass shit, but if it works for some patients, then use it. Same as all the other meds out there–what works for one does not work for another. It's why doctors experiment, to find out what meds work best for each individual patient.
We have all forgotten that her dad is just a plain old working guy. He still lives in the ranch house they lived in when they were just starting out in. He works his fingers to the bone in a restaurant. He isn't on the 'Britney' dole or her sister's dole like her mother is. I don't recall him driving a Benz or an Escalade. Maybe this plain old Dad can take his daughter who clearly has fallen off the tracks and needs help, both mentally and emotionally, and put her back on the right track. Brit seemed to have stopped growing emotionally somewhere around her teenage years (ever notice how girlish she sounds when she talks ie., 'I'm scared!, I'm scared!). Maybe her Dad can help her 'grow up' and give her the love she needs without being on the atm like her mom. Let us all pray.

Bipolars like to fuck anything they can get their hands on–you are most certainly right about that. It depends on what kind of meds they are on, whether they can get off or not.
How observant of you to know that I ended it–as is usually the case in such a relationship–the non-bipolar just can't fucking take it beyond a certain point. I'd have to say that it was during one of his down periods and my body said no more, because he'd stepped over the line during that episode.
Britney has definately paid her dues. I hope she is happy again soon.

I really hope this works for her. I myself am married to a bipolar man who stayed in a pysch ward and it was the best thing for him, after two week she could come home and he is still going to his doctors and really the best thing she could do is be wih the people who know what is going on and how to help her. I really hope she gets better, but this will not be an easy road for her so I wish her luck.

I sure hope Brittney figures out how to overcome her problems. I never cared for her until I caught a glimpse of the “train wreck” happening live on Perez Hilton. What a mess and what a toll on Brittney. On a positive note, I am impressed that so many are hoping for her recovery.
What I am writing about now is an idea I want floated about what she can do next. I’ve heard anti drug public service announcements but that would be lame as are most psas. BUT what about a psa focused on telling kids about the pitfalls of being famous or just helping the kids understand being famous and relate that with other goals in life.
I hope she gets better. Nobody should have to go through what she is going through.

NPI is useless, she should go to Dr.Daniel Amen in Newport. He uses Spec scans and can tell exactly whats going on in ones head. All NPI offers is stain couches, spoons with pizza and over medicating.
