A Message To LGBT Americans

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Politik > Hillary Clinton

thumbnail2.jpg

As I have traveled around the country these past twelve months, what I sensed in my heart has been confirmed – America is embracing its LGBT sons and daughters with an acceptance and understanding as never before. On the campaign trail, a father of a gay son will ask about ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. A woman will ask why she can be discriminated against just because of who she is. Sometimes they wait furtively for the crowd to thin and then whisper their confidences in a soft voice and sometimes they stand up proudly at town meetings and want me to share my views on how I will help lead the change to assure that this country fulfills its promise to everyone.

Let me tell you what I have been telling voters across America. I am fully committed to the fair and equal treatment of LGBT Americans. For seven long years, the Bush Administration has tried to divide us - only seeing people who matter to them. It's been a government of the few, by the few, and for the few. And no community has been more invisible to this administration than the LGBT community.

I will change that. The best evidence of what I will do as President is what I have already done.

* I am proud of my record as First Lady, as a U.S. Senator and as a candidate for President in working toward the fair and equal treatment of LGBT Americans.
* I am proud that as Chair of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee in 2006, I worked closely with LBGT community to develop a smart strategy that defeated the Federal Marriage Amendment. I am proud of fighting the FMA as divisive wedge politics at its worst.
* I am proud to be a co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligation Act which would grant the same benefits (including health insurance) to domestic partners of federal employees that are currently offered to employees’ legal spouses.
* I am proud to have authored the Early Treatment for HIV Act, which expands access to vital treatment options for low-income individuals living with HIV, and fought to fully fund the Ryan White CARE Act.
* I am proud that I hired a National Director of LGBT Outreach within a month of announcing my candidacy for President and to have openly gay and lesbian staffers serving at all levels of my campaign.
* I am proud to have a National LGBT Steering Committee of over 130 that includes openly LGBT elected officials, Board members and opinion leaders on issues ranging from transgender rights, to HIV/AIDS, to “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”.
* I am proud to have marched in Gay Pride parades as both First Lady and as Senator and to have spoken in front of so many LGBT audiences ranging from the Human Rights Campaign, Empire State Pride Agenda, the Hetrick Martin Institute, PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), GMHC (Gay Men’s Health Crisis), and the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
* I am proud to have fought Republican efforts to demonize and marginalize the LGBT community, and I will continue to do that as President.

We have so much work to do. When I am President, we will work together to make sure that all Americans in committed relationships have equal benefits and that nothing stands in the way of loving couples who want to adopt children in need. We're going to expand our federal hate crimes legislation and pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and assure that they are both fully inclusive of all people. And finally, we will put an end to the failed policy of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Courage, honor, patriotism and sacrifice – the traits that define our men and women in uniform – have nothing to do with sexual orientation.

My father was a conservative Republican, who held very traditional views for much of his life. Yet in his last years, it was a gay couple who lived next door who provided much of the compassion and comfort he and my mother needed as he grew ill. And it was that same neighbor who held his hand as he died. If my father can move, America can move.

To each and every LGBT American, I say this. You have done so much to help this country understand your lives by simply being open and honest about who you are and living your lives with dignity. Thank you for your courage. It is time that we recognize your hard work. I know that this country is ready for changes in the law that reflect the evolution in our hearts.

America deserves a President who appeals to the best in each of us, not the worst; a President who values and respects all Americans and treats all Americans equally no matter who they are or who they love. I want to be that President. I want to be your President.

Pretty sure since this is Perez's website, he can post and write about whatever he wants. Those of you who don't agree with what's he's doing, just stop visiting the site. There are plenty of other places to get your gossip. Using the comments to swear and complain is in no way productive. Just my two cents.

I understand Bill has earned $40,000,000 in the past six years.
Hilary, as a Senator, now comes under the 'Congressional Retirement and
Staffing Plan,' which means that even if she never gets reelected, she
STILL receives her Congressional salary until she dies.

If Bill outlives her, he then inherits HER salary until HE dies.
He is already getting his Presidential salary until he dies. If Hillary outlives
Bill, she also gets HIS salary until she dies.
It's common knowledge that in order for her to establish NY residency,
they purchased a million dollar-plus house in upscale Chappaqua , New York .
They are entitled to Secret Service protection for life.
Here is where it becomes interesting. Their mortgage payments hover
at around $10,000 per month. BUT, an extra residence 'had' to be built
within the acreage to house the Secret Service agents.
The Clintons charge the Federal government $10,000 monthly rent
for the use of that extra residence, which is about equal to their mortgage
payment. This means that we, the taxpayers, are paying the Clinton 's
salary, mortgage, transportation, safety and security, as well as the
salaries for their 12 man staff — and, this is all perfectly legal!

Re: bulldog – Haha, seriously. I'm Canadian and universal health care saved my family from financial ruin. My brother fell ill as a child, for which he was hospitalized for two weeks. Machines, and doctors, a private room in the Stollery childrens hospital, one for the best childrens hospitals there is. What did my mom have to pay? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Many doctors and nurses will be employed, in fact, we have a shortage, we need more. Back to my family, since my mom wasn't working after spending all her time in the hospital with my brother, we even received money from the government to pay bills, etc. Out of curiousity, we asked what the hospotal bill might have been, $15,000 a day. Such a bill would ruin any family. And we didn't pay a cent. Universal health care helps everyone. I'm very passionate about it, because of my family's experience. So please, maybe do a bit more research.

    And you might also believe,
    * That she knew nothing about her husband's pardon for those FALN Puerto Rican terrorists just before the New York Senatorial election, and that she was as surprised as we were when she got the Puerto Rican vote in New York!
    * That Hillary didn't know that there was a photographer, hired by her and her husband, hiding in the palms on that beach in St. Thomas to snap a picture of her dancing with her "husband."
    * That Hillary dances with her husband all the time!
    * That Hillary holds the men and women who serve in our armed forces in actual high regard.
    * That Hillary didn't eventually cost the U.S. Taxpayers $73 million by using her position at the Rose Law Firm to shelter a failing savings and loan association.
    * Hillary didn't hire Craig Livingstone an had no clue that he was gathering FBI files on Clinton enemies.

I pray to God that this woman does not become president! If she does though she's going to have to work twice as hard as any of the male presidents ever have. She's representing the United States of America and will have to meet with male leaders from other countries who aren't going to take her seriously. As stupid as President Bush is, he knows how to make people like him (of course because he's pretty stupid which translates into funny). Hilary won't be able to shake hands or converse with Middle Eastern leaders the way male leaders can. The thought of having a Female President is cool and all but just not this lady!

I like her better every day. I believe she would push for same-sex marriage if it wouldn't cause her to lose the election — and who knows, maybe things will change enough over the next 8 years that she can make it happen. Like her or not, she is the only candidate left who has really reached out to LGBT Americans.

Oh, and look at all the issues before making a decision. This is to everyone - I don't care who you vote for so long as you're voting on what you believe and that you've actually LOOKED at what the candidates say and what they say means. :D

  29. Respectfully Disagree, Perez says – reply to this

    229

The Democrats have fielded three excellent candidates: It's an embarrassment of riches. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards are ALL stronger candidates than John Kerry, Michael Dukakis and Jimmy Carter. Though I support Obama, I also have great respect for Hillary Clinton — and I am sad that she is running in the same year. (I don't think it's right, relevant or germaine, but I also believe that Bill's infidelity greatly hurt her campaign, justified or not. Too many women I have spoken to lost respect for Hillary because she didn't kick his ass out. But I think there IN FACT IS an urgent need for Obama — he is a great role model, a great unifier and a great example for ALL of us people of color. Even if you grow up poor with a single mother like Barack did, this is what you can grow to be: A brilliant, accomplished graduate of Harvard law grad and devoted husband and father who cared not about making the zillions he could have — as a handsome, brilliant Black man — at a hot law firm, but instead helped inner city youth and laid-off steel workers in Chicago. Hillary has always lied in the upper echelons of society; barack grew up poor: He has walked the walk and he will HELP the poor. He is truly an inspiration. So pull up your saggy pants, turn off your music, father your kids, stop stuffing in fast food (and be healthy and fit like he is), get your GED, go to community college and get to work….and Caucus for Barack!

  33. get real, people says – reply to this

    233

    Please educate yourselves!!!
    Some early facts:
Hillary was president of the Young Republicans group at Wellesley College during her freshman year!
Not only that- She was a self-described “Goldwater Girl”- that ‘s what they called women for Goldwater back then- you know- like “I’m a Kennedy Man” type of thing As I’m sure you know Goldwater was strongly opposed to the Civil Rights Legislation and was for “Separate but Equal” amongst other (can you spell R-A-C-I-S-T?) things. So was Hillary. She grew up in an affluent Staunchly Republican household in Chicago. All of this is in her book and has been well known for decades. Did you also know she has refused to release her law school memoirs?

  34. cari says – reply to this

    234

She says whatever she has to, to get votes. She probably uses the same speach and changes the group to fit. She has done nothing for NY. Schumer is a better senator. She has not made any mark on the senate, just in the background for most things, so she is not really taking any sides. What she is saying is what most liberals have said. She is not unique and the President does not make up the laws. The congress does. The president signs them or vetos them. Also, she is getting emotional/crying at some of these meetings. While some are saying this is showing her human side, as leader of this country, you can cry when going against other countries. She, when running for reelection said that she had no intention of running in 2008 and would forfill her term in Senate. She also said that Bush tricked her into signing the war bill. If she can be tricked in signing something that is titled Military ACtion against Iraq, then she is not smart enough to lead. And I am a woman. Yes, I would like a woman president, but only when the right one comes along.

Why does being gay or lesbian mean you deserve equal rights. Being gay and lesbian is a choice that ultimately will lead to eternity in hell. the Bible says love the sinner hate the sin, I think it very unfortunate that you choose this lifestyle life is but a vapor and we should be more concerned for eternity and the choices we make now will affect those decisions. "

You sure must like to read about sin if you come to this website. Maybe you're living vicariously through Britney Spears or something.

I was under the impression that everyone, including LGBT citizens, deserved to be treated equally because that the right fucking thing to do. I guess not according to you.

Why would I take political advice from a man who was wrong about Castro being dead?

  48. CARM says – reply to this

    248

It is ridiculous how Hillary is trying to enlist others in her "progressive" GLBT politics. This woman will say whatever she wants to attract attention. She supported the Defense of Marriage Act that made it impossible for GLBT couples to marry under the law. At the time she said it was the right thing to do. She supported "Dont ask Dont tell" and again stated that it was the right thing to do.
If we look back at history and see how real change was brought about, we will see that this happened when people defied the impossible. It was when Lincoln sided with the minority and forced every state to abolish slavery. It was when Eisenhower forced schools in the south to desegregate and come together as one. It was when Roosevelt brought hope for the country following a depression. It was when JFK let everyone know it was okay to vote in a Catholic into power. It is was progressive members of the LGBT community marched down the streets of NY which ignited the Stonewall movements. This woman has no idea what it is like to grow up in an environment that keeps people down. She needs to not try and change her record on the issues… and you Perez need to do your research a little better.

I JUST HOPE THAT PEOPLE DONT VOTE FOR WHOEVER YOU ENDORSE JUST BECAUSE YOU ENDORSE THEM. IT WOULD SERIOUSLY UNDERMINE THE INTELLIGENCE OF YOUR AUDIENCE–NOT THAT YOU ARE ANY BETTER

Why are you people complaining About his Endorsement. Perez is Entitled to support whom ever he chooses. Every day we click on this site for the Current Events, Pop Culture Wake up Kids. This is pop Culture. This is our future. Oprah is doing the same thing going around promoting Obama. I don't watch Oprah for her political views everyday. But she has something to say and a method of how to express her views and she's using it. So If Perez wants to take one day in out of 365 days to stand up for what he believes in. He has that Right. What about not being strong enough to stand up to her husband during his many affairs with many women? What about her marriage not being about love, but about advancing her own political power? What about her husband's pardoning of Puerto Rican terrorists days before the New York Senate election? What about her involvement in the Whitewater illegal land deal? When will these questions be answered?

    Re: SHE BLOWS
You give us conservative Americas a horrible, horrible name! Please stop spewing bs. I am "conservative" but i believe in a woman's right to choose, gay marriage, and I am an athiest. However, I have conservative views about government's role (and size) in the lives of the citizens, immigration, taxes, and the economy. I live in MA and gay marriage is legal, and ofcourse, so is abortion, therefore I have no reason so vote for a democrat when a republican can take care of the rest of my beliefs.

It is important for people to vote smart. THINK about what is most important to you. Don't just vote based on party stereotypes! And please, just go vote (or don't complain)!!

wow. how old is that picture of Hilary?!?! I find it interesting that went through all that effort of finding a picture where she doesn't look like a tired old hag on an article that you are obviously bias to. I sincerely hope you give your readers more credit than that Perez. You really should just stick to what you do best, and leave the world of politics alone. You obviously didn't do enough of your own research or you would have recognized all the inconsistencies in what she claims to have done, and what she actually did. I didn't happen to read anything about her voting for LGBT marriage rights, which she in fact opposes, well according to her voting record at least. I would remove all your biased political postings because the last thing this world needs is more bias media. You are a celebrity gossip blog… quit posting political nonsense.

    277

Good for her for not being afraid to openly say she supports the LGBT community, and is looking to establish equal rights. Too many politicians are afraid to openly say that because of the very vocal and overly influential fundamentalist Christian community in the U.S.

If you're coming to this site for advice on who to vote for, do us all a favor, and don't vote at all. Yeah, I said it.

    279

Oh will you shut up folks. It's his blog and he can post what he wants, YOU'RE the one choosing to read it. If you don't like it, don't read the post, I don't read posts that concern people I've never heard of that don't interest me, like that guy in the Borat mankini.

Perez has documented his consideration of the candidates and has concluded that he supports one of them more than the others. That's how a smart person decides how to vote. They don't vote for someone simply because they're black, simply because they're a woman, or simply because they don't like that person's husband. That's what an idiot does.

There are no set rules for the 'type' of post a blog can exclusively cover. Again, if you don't like it, you don't have to read it, morons.

I was originally not for Hilary but as I educated myself further on important issues I realized that Hilary is the only candidate who says ANYTHING about gay rights. I am straight but like many-I am disgusted at how this country approaches gay rights. She will make change. Her husband made change and it was a giant leap forward for the time. We are past that point now and can look forward to the future which will hopefully include gay marriage and the end of hate crimes in this country. I voted for Hilary this morning and I believe she will be a great president for this country-we need a leader. Also, one interesting point- EVERY straight male I have talked to about this issue (and it has been plenty) all say the same thing-They will NOT vote for Hilary and when I ask why-NONE of them say its because she is a woman. I don't believe it, I believe somewhere inside them they are afraid that a woman will not take care of us. I hope I'm wrong, I hope men in today's society are past that point. I hope everyone goes out to vote-it is a privilege not an obligation! GO HILARY!!!

This is BS. I'm gay and I'd NEVER EVER vote for Billary. If she cared so much for us, why didn't she stop "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and DOMA during her "experience" as First Lady. Perez, you are in the minority of gays supporting this two-faced liar. All the gays I know are smart enough to go Obama.

This is Perez's site and he can highlight anyone he wants to. If you don't like what you see, go over to somewhere else where you do. As an American you have the right to do that. Now scram.

    285

Are you joking me right now? So many of you are getting on Perezito's case for endorsing his candidate. He is one of the few people our age that has actually done any research on the subject. How about you get a fucking life and let Perez express his opinion! If you don't like it, then go to a different site and shut the fuck up!

  86. Kiki says – reply to this

    286

Sure, you should pick a candidate and endorse them, but how about talking a little more about the other candidates? I'm a Republican, and I'd like to know about what the Rep. candidates have to say and how they are doing in the polls. C'mon Perez.

Where is everyones speeches and radio talks. You are not a political site, and if people come here to figure out who to vole for, it is really sad. Look, if you had to figure out who is one of the best actresses, could you come here? All he talks about is Angelina, so you would think she is the best actress in the world and kidman, alba, dunst etc suck. So, if you want political info, go to the news sites. Read for yourself.

    288

Wow Perez this post is long seriously what the hell lol jks. Did you know that Obama is older than Bill Clinton and J.F.K when they became president. Anyways I don't dislike her but I prefer Obama we heard what she has had to say before from many other old politicians and nothing has change So yeah call it a risk or whatever but at this point what is there to lose, I just think there is finally a politician people can trust instead of the same old. Finally a vote for someone instead of against someone.

Oh yes, don't you sound like a good and loving Christian. All over the internet bigots like yourself (reading a gay man's blog of course), spreading hatred, using only the foulest language but apparently God-fearing folk. Well, if it's people like you that I'd have to rub elbows with in Church, that must be why I don't go. I'd prefer to stay home and worship a loving God, a just God. Don't forget that wrath is one of the seven deadlies, and you seem to have it in spades.
