When You Run Out Of Ideas…

Filed under: TV News > Selma Blair

wenn1025931.jpg

With the on-going writer's strike still in effect, the big TV Execs at NBC have resorted to copying shows from other countries. The latest rip-off to enter the lineup will be Kath & Kim, a show based on the popular Australian series of the same name.

We can't really blame it on the strike, though. They would have picked this show up even if the writers were back at work.

The show is about a 50-something divorcee mother, Kath, and her snotty, spoiled 20-something daughter, Kim.

The roles of Kath & Kim are set to be played by Molly Shannon and Selma Blair.

Interesting combo.

Blair patented snotty and spoiled in Cruel Intentions and Shannon honed her 50-something shtick on Saturday Night Live.

    NO.
kath and kim is hilarious BECAUSE of the aussie accents!!
take that away and you're taking half the brilliance of the show away!
    ahh man!
gald i'm not in america to witness this!

I don't know how this is going to work! Kath & Kim is an Aussie gem, and its humour and appeal is solely based on observations of working-class Australian behaviours and dialect.

Plus, us Aussies can laugh at ourselves rather than getting all PC about everything..

Why can't they just air the ORIGINAL AUSTRALIAN version of the show if they're going to do it at all? Molly Shannon might be ok as Kath, but Selma Blair??? No! Who the hell is going to be Sharron, Kel, Brett or Trude & Prue?

    104

i bet this is a piece of shiiiiiiiiit compared to the original series… you yanks butcher everything with your crappy sense of humour (ie the office).

  5. rebs says – reply to this

    105

that is possibly the most bizarre casting ever… as if selma blair looks 20 years old. and molly shannon? why? why?

Yeah, go ahead and pay Kath and Kim shitloads of money, then make an unimaginative, inferior copy that is total crap where they are trailer trash or something, thus making the Aussie creators super-rich and emphasing the superiority of the original. I think it's a great idea.

look at moi!!!!! god the americans will never do that show justice.

Kath & Kim is the best! I really can't see them pulling it off, but who knows–the American version of the Office ended up being just as good as the original, maybe that will happen with this show too.

    111

Considering that neither one of them are the proposed ages of the people whom they are supposed to play, that just seems stupid…I'm just sayin…;)

  12. Nick says – reply to this

    112

Perez, you're stupid. This was in the works long before the strike even BEGAN. In fact, NBC first announced that it was looking into bringing it over here in NOVEMBER 2006. You stupid fuck. Stop jumping to conclusions!

    113

Americans make everything worse. I cannot belive Selma Blair was cast as Kim. Half of the fun of Kim is that she is fat and ugly and thinks she is hot shit.
The slutty outfits won't be anywhere near as funny on a skinny pretty girl

i could say 8 million things about why this would be a bad idea. here are just a few…where would they be from? it isnt like there are American bogans! there are rednecks but they dont even come close!…who would play sharon?…and what sport would sharon play? there isnt netball here or cricket!!!….what about the ever so famous "look at mooooooooooooooy"???? cant do that with an american accent!…nbc you are making the biggest mistake of your life with this one..just air the original and we will all be much happier

  23. Girl Unimpressed says – reply to this

    123

perez it's incredible how little you know about the industry you "report" on. american tv has a long history, dating from it's inception, of copying british tv shows. most american hit tv has been directly ripped from brit tv - all in the family, sanford & son, 3's company, just to name a few oldies but goodies.

  24. helen says – reply to this

    124

If they make the show well, the small age difference between Molly Shannon + Selma Blair shouldn't matter. In the original show, Jane Turner, who plays Kath, is only 5 years older than her daughter, Gina Riley.

I doubt that they will do it justice though. Kath and Kim is funny because of the Australianisms.

  25. gg says – reply to this

    125

nothing will ever top aussie kath and kim

  26. bunnee says – reply to this

    126

The orginal kath and kim is so australian, I don't know how an american version will work…it's a disaster waiting to happen!

  27. amz says – reply to this

    127

Part of the funny premise of Kath and Kim is that they're aussie! No way can it be done by americans and translate properly. RIPOFF! It's based Australian language and culture. Jane and Gina forever!
    Look at me!

  28. Australiette says – reply to this

    128

    Re: Cari

Firstly, Jane Turner and Gina Reilly are only a couple of years apart in age, and they pull it off.

But most importantly, this is NEVER going to work. The entire foundation of the show is suburban aussie humour. How are the yanks going to possibly 'get' the foxymorons from Fountain Lakes?

  29. ash says – reply to this

    129

funniest show ever. aussie version will cannot be beaten. btw weird weird actors that have been casted compared to ours. which is awesome

  30. K says – reply to this

    130

Is there like a 10 year age gap between the two of them??

  31. jered says – reply to this

    131

kath and kim is the best aussie show its so unique it cant be pulled off!! WHAT YOU GONNA DO WITH ALL THAT CASH, ALL THAT CASH, ALL THAT CASH?

  32. bubbles says – reply to this

    132

oh no, oh no, Ohhhho NO!!!!

kath and kim is so uniquly australian bloddy yanks are going to ruin it, u dont get our humor, our way of life how the hell are they going to produce a show that people just wont get? and selma blair….as kim… hell no

  33. suckonthis says – reply to this

    133

And cue whining Aussies "The Americans can't do this blah blah fucking blah"

Shut the fuck up. Go ride a koala or something.

I personally look forward to seeing the new version. Molly Shannon is fantastic.

  34. Alexandra says – reply to this

    134

I love Kath & Kim, but I really don't know how it's going to go through the transition to American telly, because most of the jokes in the show are malapropisms, which may only work with Australia popular culture, but hey, it might work….. Maybe…

  35. Simone says – reply to this

    135

I reallllly dont know how a show as uniquely aussie at kath and kim is going to be translated in america. Its probably one of the most classicly aussie and funniest shows. No one could ever be the same as the original kath and kim characters. non-recreatable.

  36. Amy says – reply to this

    136

Now kimmoi look at moiye look at moiye ploise…check out www.kathandkim.com
….lets just say the remake will be interesting to say the least. m sure they will do their best to make gina riley and jane turner proud as punch!~!

  37. Becka says – reply to this

    137

Gina & Jane have been liasing in the production of the American series.

Still don't get how it's going to translate however - is it going to be Fountain Lakes = Trailer Park? Cardy = home brew? Sharon=??? Is there even an American version of Warnie?

  38. nic says – reply to this

    138

Why don't they just show the Australian version. Noone else will be able to play the roles as well. I don't know how this will work as Australian humour usually doesn't translate well in the US.

  39. britegray says – reply to this

    139

    She looks pregnant.

    I like Selma Blair.

    HellBoy 2 coming this year!!!

  40. delane says – reply to this

    140

Why do they have to remake it? It's genius as it is. If America can get Flight of the Conchords with the kiwi SOH then surely to goodness Kath and Kim will translate. This is just ridiculous. Mind you, I thought the same about The Office but at least Ricky Gervais wrote both versions.

  43. nosey neighbor says – reply to this

    143

that is a great show!!! i can't wait to see it….they should use brit for the daughter though…selma's not a good pic for that roll even though i love her in all she does….should be interesting. i'll watch it!!

  44. Flux says – reply to this

    144

Um, perez you ought to get your facts checked - KnK has been in the pipeline for a while as a US show, a LONG time.

its massive in australasia, cause its bloody brilliant!

Just gonna be another thing for american tv to absolutely destroy, theres no way you can top the original Foxy Morons!!

  45. ali says – reply to this

    145

this must be a joke…katha nd kim is funny pretty much only to australians…thast what makes it funny…it's all australian humor

  46. sarah says – reply to this

    146

examples of why this will fail.
    1. the office
    2. coupling

the only show i've heard of working was the american version of thank god you're here…I dont know what its name is there i think they changed it but its an improve show with jason alexander.

  47. bria says – reply to this

    147

this is so rediculous. the australian kath and kim is awesome, and they shouldn be messing with the original concept, if they actually pull this off, i will be very surprised.

  48. krissy says – reply to this

    148

part of what makes it funny is that gina riley, who plays kim, is actually in her late 40's. there's no way.. they need to pick a couple of natural mature woman who are hilariously funny in their own right… then it may work.

  49. taxlady says – reply to this
