The Family Speaks

Filed under: Britney Spears > Lynne Spears > Jamie Spears

Britney's parents are not happy about her release from the hospital on Wednesday.

They claim that the UCLA Medical Center let Spears go, even though the psychiatrist treating her wanted the fallen pop star to remain hospitalized.

Jamie & Lynne released the following statement late Wednesday evening.

"As parents of an adult child in the throws of a mental health crisis, we were extremely disappointed this morning to learn that over the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist, our daughter Britney was released from the hospital that could best care for her and keep her safe. We are deeply concerned about our daughter's safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded. We ask only that the court's orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted."

We agree!

Hopefully Brit's parents can make sure she gets the help she needs.

She was released after a court appointed rep determined she was competent (has the capacity) to direct the course of her healthcare. That occured as the result of a "Riese hearing", which every mental health patient on an involuntary hold is entitled to. Once they determine she is competent (has the capacity to consent), she cannot be medicated or held against her will (unless she presents an immediate threat of danger to herself or someone else).

These hearings happen all the time, and patients are released (AMA) by the courts as a result. Often the patient is re-admitted to the unit at a later date, and their treatment has to start all over again. It's costly, and very very bad for the patient. Courts don't need to practice medicine. We need to find a better system for ensuring patient rights.

Britney is going to have to become a threat to herself or others to get back into hospital.
She is manipulating the system. The psychiatrist wanted her to stay and get help and she chose to leave. Obviously after 72 hours drug free she was able to make sound decisions. The next time she goes into hospital the Dr. should initiate a 14 day assessment from the get go. Then things may get a little more difficult for Britney and her lawyers to navigate around. This can and should have been done from the get go. The psychiatrists are not erring on the side of safety. They are afraid of being sued. IT IS PATHETIC

I know all about mental health care in this country and let me assure you its bullshit. Even with all the money in the world it is hard to get a grown adult help if they don't want it. My brother has schizophrenia, he is 19. Crazy people don't know there crazy, like Britney, so the don't think they need help. Hospitals in this country will not keep someone in care for more than a week if the person is not trying to kill themselves or someone else. It is really sad. I have been through this. My brother has tried to attack me, he put a knife in my mothers bed, he broke down my bedroom door screaming I will kill you, but they only kept him in there for 3 days(5150) to a week if they felt he needed it. I watch my brother slowly get worse everyday and it breaks my heart. Also, mental illness and drug use go hand in hand. Trust, she takes drugs because she wants to feel better, but the drugs just make her more crazy. Sad cycle. I feel bad for her.

Re: JessieMarie – My heart goes out to you. I can't imagine the suffering and frustration your family has experienced via the mental health system. The truth is never wrong and for family members who share this truth and in spite of it all nothing can be done….must be beyond words.

I think it is good that they are releasing statements. It lets everyone know that she mentally unstable, hence her behavior. It also lets people know that those around her like Adnan and Sam probably should be held accountable for anything she does because they are enablers.

I think what Lynne and Jaime are trying to do to help Britney is great. I think they are having a really difficult time though because she is an adult, and really have no control or reign over her actions.

I feel for Britney, she was hot for so long, and exploited and now she's falling apart, i wish the papp would leave her alone. I also wish she could and would come stay with me in my small town, me and my friends can show her how to be a mom, she could even continue with her psych treatment. I just hope she pulls it together and hit us with some hot dance moves next
