Children Treated With Botox Died
The popular anti-wrinkle drug Botox and a competitor Myobloc have been linked to some deaths and other severe side effects suggestive of botulism, the government warned doctors Friday.
Shares Allergan Inc., which makes Botox, sank more than 6 percent.
Botox and Myobloc use botulinum toxin, which blocks nerve impulses to muscles, causing them to relax.
But in rare cases, the toxin may have spread beyond the injection site to other parts of the body, resulting in such problems as paralysis of respiratory muscles and difficulty swallowing, the Food and Drug Administration said.
The FDA said the deaths were all among child patients, mostly those with cerebral palsy treated for limb spasms, a condition the FDA has never formally approved for the drugs' use in this country although other countries have.
The problems may be caused by overdoses of the drugs, the FDA said.
Caroline Van Hove, a spokeswoman for Botox maker Allergan Inc., said children with cerebral palsy have far larger doses injected into their leg muscles than the doses given adults seeking wrinkle care.
But the FDA warned that it also has reports of side effects in people of all ages given the drugs for a variety of conditions.
Friday's warning came two weeks after the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to strengthen warnings to users of Botox and Myobloc — citing 180 reports of U.S. patients suffering fluid in the lungs, difficulty swallowing or pneumonia, including 16 deaths.
It is not the first warning about the potential for botulinum toxin to spread after the drugs' injection; the products' labels say it can happen.
Still, the FDA said Friday that its investigation into the side effects is still in its early stages.
For now, the agency said doctors should warn all patients receiving a botulinum toxin injection, whether for cosmetic purposes or as a medical treatment, to seek immediate care if they experience difficulty swallowing or breathing, slurred speech or muscle weakness.
That falls short of Public Citizen's request that the agency put a black-box warning, the FDA's sternest, on the drugs' labels and require that every patient receive a pamphlet outlining the risk before every injection.
"Every doctor needs to notified about this, every patient needs to be notified," said Public Citizen's Dr. Sidney Wolfe. "Children are showing the way, unfortunately some dead children."
He said drug regulators in Britain and Germany last year required sterner warnings be sent to every doctor in those countries.
Shares of Irvine, Calif.-based Allergan fell $3.94, or 5.8 percent, to $63.42 Friday in afternoon trading.
#1: People who have had Botox before can have healthy children.
#2: Botox is used safely by millions every year to smooth wrinkles, prevent migraines, and decrease excessive sweating.
#3: The cases mentioned in the article are situations involving overdoses administered by inexperienced doctors.. The doctors involved are to blame, not Botox.
#4: Penicillin came from mold, so anyone who has ever had a cold, should understand that great medicines can come from potentially dangerous means.
#5: Of course celebrities use Botox, because all the "normal" people scrutinize every inch of them. If you are going to judge people based on the means they use to look good, you need to stop judging them on their looks to begin with!

A BASIC SEARCH ON SIDE EFFECTS OF BOTOX (WHICH ANY SENSIBLE PERSON WOULD DO BEFORE THEY GET IT) WOULD SHOW THAT IT IS PRETTY DODGY WITH SPONTANEOUS DEATHS.
THE FDA SOMEHOW APPROVED IT FOR SOME CONDITIONS DESPITE THIS.
IT NEEDS TESTED MORE.
ALTHOUGH EVERYONE IN HOLLYWOOD + REGULAR PEOPLE ARE ON IT AND THERE HAVE NOT BEEN THAT MANY DEATHS.

Light skinned folks have less meletonin and seem to wrinkle faster because of this and many don't wear sunscreen. I learned this at a early age and it is possible to work against this odds but hard. I happen to be 28 but still pass for 22, which is from not tanning, and always using good products with Q10 and antioxidants keep a person young. So enough with the labeling some can look good. My grandmas skin is amazing.

It is harmful and is a poison and should be treated like a poison. I know scientist that will also back me on this and other researchers suggest using collegen fill is much safer and more effective. Most migrains are from hormone problems as well as sweating causes this. Checking and balancing the body for underlying causes is what a intelligent person does instead of injecting poison.

Recent photos show Nicole, stick thin, out working with her trainer during her pregnancy. With her history of miscarriage, shouldn't she be sitting at home with her feet up, eating something, instead of working out? Trying to keep the baby should be tops on her list, not trying to keep her figure!

Women wonder why children have birth defects - the same women who wouldn't question having Botox while they are pregnant. Their doctors tell them "it shouldn't affect anything" - and then their babies have problems later on the line.
