Quote of the Day

Filed under: Anglophilia > Quote of the Day > Celebrity Feuds > Amy Winehouse

wenn1756529.jpg

“I'm going on record as an artist who is able to critique [Amy Winehouse]. I think she has a great talent, but I don't agree with the Grammys giving her those nods. I think it sends the wrong message, that even in the midst of her stupor of drugs she can get nominated for all these awards. It's a slap in the face to musicians and artists who work very hard that they turn around and give it to someone who really obviously doesn't have a grasp of what she has. I've been in this business over 25 years and I sacrificed five years of my own life on drugs and almost lost my life because of it. So I take great offence to almost see someone getting glory out of being in the position that they're in – she needs to get her life together and embrace her craft, she will lose it if she doesn't get it together.”

- Natalie Cole

i agree with her opinion, BUT Amy made this music BEFORE she got seriously into drugs. She deserves her awards bc she made great music. End of story! AND, she making great strides in trying to fix herself up!

  2. tell it Natalie says – reply to this

    102

she is right - and she is speaking from experience…so all of those who are going to say something negative, just don't even bother. Wino has a long way to go, both personally and professionally.

  3. Cindy says – reply to this

    103

Do I hear a slight ting of jealousy in her voice!!!???

  4. stephen says – reply to this

    104

    I AGREE!!!

  5. Lollie says – reply to this

    105

    Kinda agree there…..

  6. larry says – reply to this

    106

She makes a point, but I wonder if she would have, or did, turn down any awards and accolades while she was on her 5-year toot.

  7. scout says – reply to this

    107

    Wow! She sounds jealous

  8. Miss D-Licious says – reply to this

    108

Ok I liked her up until this point but she really is the pot calling the kettel black. If it wasn't for her(Natalie's) mom she wouldn't even be able to speak to make a comment like this. She admits to selling her body for drugs at one point so with that said I don't think she should make a omment like this. Amy hasn't sunk that low you know the public would hear about that.

  9. ChellyFromtheBurgh says – reply to this

    109

wow - bitter much? Seriously…Wino is FAR from the first talented drug addict to be recognized for her ARTISTIC achievement - and she won't be the last! Drugs and music go together like peanut butter and jelly! Not saying that's good…but, that's the nature of the business!

  10. chelsea says – reply to this

    115

although amy is not well, her music is what the awards are about, natalie cole should shut up.

  16. jimmyjazz says – reply to this

    TEE HEE…I STARTED PAGE TWO

  17. Truth says – reply to this

    117

The Grammys are about the MUSIC, not personal issues. Amy Winehouse was being rewarded for her WORK, not her personal life.

This is just a sad attempt at publicity for Natalie Cole. Get a grip, Natalie! And at least get on topic!

  18. RAIN says – reply to this

    118

AND THIS IS COMING FROM A FORMER COKEHEAD? WOW.

  19. hoebeater says – reply to this

    119

Natalie Cole is not one to talk about drugs. She has a crack baby. I know him actually. He went to a special school near my school.

  20. ANKFSU says – reply to this

    120

    SO SAD, BUT SO TRUE!!!

  21. charlotte says – reply to this

    121

HERE HERE! I totally agree. I said the same thing last night, Natalie SO copied me! Amy should not be rewarded until she gets her act together. WRONG MESSAGE!

  22. Allen says – reply to this

    122

    I agree!!

  23. kevin says – reply to this

    123

you can't judge an artist on their personal life. it's there art, and that is what inspires them….life, full of pain, agony and suffering.

what natalie says is irrelevant to the talent of an incredible artist.

  24. Brendon says – reply to this

    124

    SECOND!

  25. damien says – reply to this

    125

THIS….. COMING FROM THE QUEEN OF DRUGS HERSELF???!!!! SHUT YOUR STUPID BIG LIPPED MOUTH …NATALIE!

  26. Janet says – reply to this

  27. molly says – reply to this

    127

bitch is just jealous that she isnt good enough. she cant get an award after years trying amy can get a grammy on crack

  28. I Agree With Natalie Cole says – reply to this

    128

Way to go, Recording Academy! Shower the junkie with awards.

  29. jj says – reply to this

    129

    amen sistah!

  30. mollay says – reply to this

    130

    I rather agree with her.

However, Amy is talented and that is why she deserved her recognition.
But it's true that she should get her act together!

  31. Fashionista_911 says – reply to this

    131

Umm although I get where she's coming from and all but wow isnt this the pot calling the kettle black? Natalie Cole was a drug addict and she even was a prostitute for awhile to support her habit. Look is up, she's discussed this before. I'm surprised that she's being so judgmental after all the things she's gone thru herself. You'd think she'd be more supportive. And from what I've seen, Amy along with the help and support from her parents is working on cleaning up her life. There have been many of talented people on drugs who still till this day fight to stay sober and still are creative at the same time. They shouldnt be denied accolades even though they are not perfect. They're still human and that is something we all can understand. I think Amy got a glimpse for the first time in her life into her greatness….if she didnt realize it before she realizes it now.

  32. kittykat says – reply to this

    132

    hmmmm….

so if we eliminate all artists who are substances users would there be any grammies to hand out?

  33. Jessica says – reply to this

    133

Who is this stupid bitch again?

  34. wilhelmer says – reply to this

    134

her nods were for her music, not her drug abuse. bottom line. despite her abuse, she is one of the most talented voices of our generation. she deserved her awards. stop hating.

  35. NOT ONE TO JUDGE says – reply to this

    135

How sad for someone who rode her fathers coattails of fame for her own "success" to judge such a great talent! Are Amy's parents in the biz, no she was found all on her own by her own talent! Surely Miss Cole just needed to see her name in the papers again! Stick to your music and talent Amy! You know who your real fans are and we love and support you!

  36. nokillnobeepbeep says – reply to this

    136

    SAD SAD SAD

The wino craze is something i simply cannot understand. she didnt bring 60s soul and do wop back countless artists have been doing that for decades and as far as talent, AS FUCKING IF!What is so great about Winos voice? People are just obsessed with these crackheads.

  37. aimee says – reply to this

    137

ye whatever, amy deserves those awards because she is a talented musician. They're not awarding her drug taking they're awarding her music and these people have to back off and be happy for her!!

  38. erinista says – reply to this

    138

OH pllllllzzzz. stfu, like she hasn't gotten her party on. high moral standards are a total boooooooore. amy winehouse will continue to be my fav bitch, drugs or not. AND she's got more talent in one hair follicle than miss cole has in her whole body. someone should tell her the martyr gig was sooooooooo 1000 years ago.

  39. Nana says – reply to this

    139

    Jealous.

    Lol, I kid …

A part of what she say is true, but Amy's gettin her shits together, so everythings gonna be all good. We just hope that she won't go back to her old habits … Go Amy

  40. Natalie says – reply to this

    140

Oh give it rest! Amy deserved those awards - its a fantastic album. The Grammys are for artistic achievement not for moral superiority.

  41. Alex says – reply to this

    141

    I totally agree!

  42. chocolate_krys says – reply to this

    142

I disagree. Cause it is about the talent, not her being high. Its not the grammy's concern how much dope she snorts….

And wasnt Natalie Cole once a Coke head??? I can swear she was.

  43. SPOILED WIFE says – reply to this

    143

PUHHLEASE.. THIS COMING FROM A FORMER CRACKHEAD REAL NICE… FUCK THIS NASTY BLACK BITCH, SHE RODE HER FATHERS COAT TAILS INTO THE INDUSTRY AND AMY WINEHOUSE HAS REAL TALENT NOT THE ABILITY TO DO A CRAPPY VIRTUAL DUET WITH HER CROAKED FATHER… GIMME A BREAK DO DIE BITCH FUCK YOU AMY WINEHOUSE IS MORE OF A TALENT THAN YOU COULD EVER BE SKANK WHORE CRACKHEADED NIG

  44. kyle says – reply to this

    144

    dumb bitch

  45. Lollgag01 says – reply to this

    145

I agree with Natalie. At least someone is not afraid to tell the truth. Amy
Winehouse is the poorest possible role model.

  46. marcie says – reply to this

    146

I don't think anything should be taken away from Amy just because she has a disease. I think she deserves her Grammys and I hope the honors and awards she has received, along with the love and support of her family, will be the shot in the arm (no pun intended) she needs to pull her shit together and get well. You'd think Natalie would be more supportive given her history as a drug addict. What a bitch!

  47. tarry says – reply to this

    147

    i TOTALLY AGREE with her.

  48. Bill Brasky says – reply to this

    148

But it would be wrong not to give the award to someone who isn't as talented. Besides, how does Natalie Cole know what Amy has been through or how hard she's worked? She's injecting herself into a situation to get her name in the paper. Welcome back to the spotlight, lady. At least this time you didn't mention your father. Crazy has-been!

  49. Dexy says – reply to this

    149

this stupid bitch is bitter it wasn't her. the Grammys are based on merit not on personal struggles. if she battled addiction should she not instead say i hope amy pulls through and becomes the phenomenon that she is meant to be?

  50. Miss D-Licious says – reply to this

    150

Re: ObsessedRe: yesorno – Ok I liked her up until this point but she really is the pot calling the kettel black. 152

hahahahaha………….she's got her panties all in a knot!!!!! too fckn bad she has NO talent!!! all she has is her daddy's name. get a grip nat, amy is far more talwnted than you have ever been, or will be for that matter. are you a scientoligist or something?????

  53. bRi says – reply to this

    153

    Dear Natalie Cole,
Amy Winehouse was not nominated for the Humanitarain Award, she was nominated for the Grammy's. Because you do not seem to know, the Grammy's recognize people for their hard work in music, which Amy Winehouse did work for. Her personal life has nothing to do with the quality of music she has put out, therefore making her deserving of the awards she received.
So, just because you're jealous that she has gotten so much acclaim, even while on drugs, get over it. Amy Winehouse is original, and quite frankly I think she's amazing.

    bRi

  54. how lame... says – reply to this

    154

Ummm… Natilie… I do believe that Ms. Winehouse IS in rehab right now and working hard to get her life in order. Eat a bag o' dicks and shut your mouth. She deserved to win.

  55. Gabe says – reply to this

    155

It's a Grammy award, not person of the year dumb bitch

  56. SJ says – reply to this

    156

THANK YOU! FINALLY someone has said it….Amy Winehouse is SOOOO overrated and I can name a number of people…shoot ANYONE besides Amy Winehouse deserved those grammys…rehab had some OK music but it wasnt the freakin revolution that the grammys….granted the girl IS talented…but DAMN she didnt deserve any of those grammys!

  57. Danny says – reply to this

    157

I totally agree with Natalie! Besides Amy is not THAT talented to begin with. And she's horrendus to look at!

  58. sars says – reply to this

    158

Obviously she doesn't know that drugged up musicians make the BEST music. Whenever they get clean their music sucks!

  59. robert says – reply to this

    159

She's right!!! I agree with you Natalie!

  60. AGREE 100% !!! says – reply to this

    160

I have NO idea who she is, but this is what I was saying ALL night!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm one to say an artist should not be judged by their personal life, but Amy was a little too extreme. If she at least kept her troubles silenced then cool, but she couldn't even do that. But props to Amy, the artist that is!!

  61. stacey says – reply to this

    161

She's absolutely right. In so many other instances the grammys had obviously pass up on giving artist rewards that had either a checkered past or controversial lifestyle. We know 50 cent losing best new artist 2 evanesence after a year of domination was clearly because he didn't fit the grammy mold… What makes Amy so special? Her personal life is sooo fucked up and being rewarded takes away from the severity of her negative lifestyle!

  62. KRISTEN says – reply to this

    162

    I AGREE !!!

  63. santiago says – reply to this

    163

she need to STFU, because the awards aren't about lifestyle, they are about the music (or they're supposed to be). I mean do they do a background check on everyone? do they see if you are a rapist, murderer, filanderer, spousal abuser etc… What an uninformed and one sided conservative opinion

  64. right on says – reply to this

    164

i agree, it's a little harsh but it's true. musicians work hard, and it is a slap in the face to give so many awards to a crack head.

  65. Mike D says – reply to this

    165

    Get over it.
If someone battles with drugs, and attempts to get over it,
then they deserve anything that may be commended to them,
just because nobody gives a shit who you are when you're sober,
doesn't mean you have the right to slander people who are not.

  66. patches mom says – reply to this

    166

i totally agree w Natalie. give it to someone who really cares and who is really working for it, not a fucking crackhead who happens to be talented. Amy Winehouse is going to be our generation's Janis Joplin.

  67. BLACK PEOPLE ARE STUPID says – reply to this

    167

stupid black bitch, jealous of a younger , more talented woman.

  68. Jay says – reply to this

    168

    I'm not really a Winehouse fan, but…
WHAT A STUPID, HATEFUL THING TO SAY!!
If she can still be that judgmental of others, CLEARLY she still has some work to do-
    ON HERSELF!

  69. Jealousy says – reply to this

    169

Jealousy jealousy jealousy… People need to stop being so jealous of Amy. She's in rehab and is working towards getting healthy. If you don't have anything nice to say SHUT UP!! I love Amy and I wish her all the best and congratulations!!! xoxo

  70. Sane says – reply to this

    170

I like Natalie Cole…love her voice, but she is wrong, wrong, wrong….Amy Winehouse deserved to win and she should've won album of the year. Just because she's a drug addict doesn't mean that her music wasn't great!…I play her 2 cd's over and over …..everybody knows she needs to get her life back on track and who knows if she will every make another album, but she deserved these wins!….

  71. Jacquie says – reply to this

    171

Back in Natalie's day it was hardly common place to read about the ins and outs of a celebrity's personal life. Today, unfortunately, we are privvy to everything, including what goes on in their bathroom, (ie Whitney Houston). If the media/papparazzi had their cameras up the dresses of the divas 30 years ago I'm not so sure the news would be all that different.

The grammys are about musical excellence, nothing more.

If we're going to judge people based on their private lives then we'd better collect Mel Gibson's trophy and Heath Ledger's trophy among many many others as well.

Ms. Cole, please don't throw stones. You live in one of the largest glass houses of all.

    175

and who is she again? please tell me. she became famous because of her dad. she revived his song….that's all. has she written any song? tell me please. she wasted her life for five years…all i can say she couldn't balance it like this amy winehouse. so SHUT UP!!! GIVE US SOME HIT SONG!!!!!

  76. Amy4Ever says – reply to this

    176

Shut Up! What were they going to say" 'We want to nominate Amy, but she has a drug problem, so she is elimated". Stop preaching, stop hating. I think the only grammy Natalie Cole won was for duet with her father (after he was dead). Natilie Cole is jealous, jealous. If she wasn't so black she would be green.

  77. Diana says – reply to this

    177

Sorry, but it sounds like a little sour grapes to me. She was presented the award for her music not her personal life. If personal life were the factor in these awards I am sure more than half should be returned by various artists who have received them. It is absolutely known that drugs in the music industry is the not given a second thought (unless you get caught of course and sometimes that doesn't matter either). Unfortunately, thats the way it seems to be these days.

  78. blissali says – reply to this

    178

Sore Loser! Amy deserves the win because it was a good album. That's what the Grammys are rewarding her for, not for her drug antics and personal life. Back to Black should have won the Album of the Year! Herbie Hancock? Gee, even he was surprise by the win.

  79. Jrock says – reply to this

    179

    Is that fucking drug-addict kidding?

  81. god says – reply to this

    181

Good. I agree. Amy Winehouse, although talented is a horrible role model for women and more importantly young women who see her on TV constantly. She's a strung out freak and should not be given attention until she cleans up her act.

  82. mir says – reply to this

    182

    Who is she to talk???

  83. Lee says – reply to this

  86. Raq says – reply to this

    186

She has a point, I have amy's record and I love it…But a large part of me agrees with what natalie said. She is showing people (kids especially) that just because your born with a talent doesnt mean that you also have to work hard as well. You can just Party and put stuff up your nose and still get Grammys

  87. RedCloud says – reply to this

    187

Natalie Cole needs to shut up. For many years she was a cokehead and her problems were so bad that her mother had to become her conservator until she cleaned up her act.

  88. deedee says – reply to this

    188

Natalie Cole has a valid point. I also think it may give the wrong message. All of these Grammies may positively reinforce the negative.

Many entertainers may feel that you have to suffer with drugs before the music is genuine.

I know it is twisted logic ……but desperate people do desperate things.

Her band is smokin….and anybody would sound good with their backup. Amy looked like some of her movements were uncontrollable. very jerky. Still detoxing I suppose. Her central nervous system will be compromised for some time.

  89. Jared says – reply to this

    189

This is a music award- Tho I agree her behavior may affect her career- she makes great music and thus deserves the awards, period. if she wasn't struggling the way she has- she probably wouldn’t have had the creativity to create beautiful music. Artists generally feed from negative and positive energy to give birth to something new. Tats my 3 cents.

  90. Kelly says – reply to this

    190

Awards are based on the quality of the music, not the person. If that were the case, there would be few winners!

  91. Stoney says – reply to this

    191

Well said, Natalie. She gets standing ovations and such for basically being a fuck-up. But come on, this is the music industry! Most of the greats are/were drug addicts!

  92. I Wanna Vomit on Natalie says – reply to this

  99. LeeLee says – reply to this

    199

She needs to shut her yap. Amy won because of the music she created, not her personal life. To say she should be discounted because she's a drug addict is mean-spirited, especially coming from one who's been there.

    Shame on Natalie.

  100. crap says – reply to this

    200

That's crap. If we go by her standards then they wouldn't have exactly done all those Beetle tributes. They were very open about their drug use.
