the grammys are a celebration of TALENT, not personality. Her music should be what was judged, not the person. If you went through and didn't nominate the artists that either had or have a drug problem, criminal record, or anything else judged 'bad', you'd have virtually no artists left to nominate. That is an incredibly short-sighted comment. a) The Recording Academy should base its decisions on the music, not the personal life of the musician (which they did), b) if we turned away from all of the art made by people (writers, musicians, poets, dancers, actors) whose personal life was not on the straight and narrow, we'd be stuck with a lot of nothing (Miro did his best work while tripping on prunes, and let's not listen to anything made by Rivers Phoenix), and c) if anyone should be supportive of a person who is battling addiction is a person with addiction. Maybe this will be the affirmation that Amy Winehouse needs to know that her music is powerful and we need her to be around and functioning to make more of it.
People keep saying that we're "enabling" Amy, but I don't see how. If anything, her nominations and wins have had a positive effect. One of the reasons she finally sought help was so she'd be able to attend the Grammys! Amy is looking and sounding better by the day, and we should at least give her credit for that!
