R.I.P.

polaroid.jpg

This is a sad day.

An essential part of our childhood is going into extinction.

Polaroid has announced that they will stop making Polaroid instant cameras and film.

For reals!

Instead, the company is going to focus on making digital cameras and manufacturing TVs.

Buy your Polaroids and film on eBay. They're gonna be a thing of the past real soon!

Such a bummer.

i love taking polaroids with my friends

This is the worst move they've made EVER. No one is buying their stuff because they're not advertising, and the digital cameras they make are shit. The instant cameras are unique. I still use Polaroid. This is shit.

I'm a *real life photographer* and this news is nothing new.

Each year film sales go down by 30% or some outrageous number. The only people keeping the market open are professional photographers– a niche market. Polaroid is shopping around for someone to buy the rights to make their film… IE: They're hoping Kodak/Fujifilm/Illford will pick it up and produce it.

  34. lauren says – reply to this

    134

NOOOOOOO!!!! shit i have to go buy some film before i can't anymore!

  35. Caitlin says – reply to this

    135

Actually "Duh," they have stopped creating the cameras a long time ago. They will only continue production of the FILM until they have enough to sell through 2009. But they are willing to sell the "instant film" to other companies and of course they will snatch it right up.

Blame your even-20-seconds-to-develop-a-photo-is-too-long digital camera using myspace obsessed selves if you are really upset about this! Almost NO one uses film cameras anymore. :(

That really is sad! I got married in July and we set up a Polaroid guest book. I bought it through an online wedding site, it came with a camera and a special book that had pockets to slide the pictures into with space underneath for people to write their regards. We had our attendants take pictures of our guests as they arrived.
Everyone seriously LOVED it! They thought it was so unique and kept commenting about what a cute idea it was. It made our guests feel special having their picture taken, plus, it assured we would have a picture of every guest that was out our wedding.
I realize they are kind of obsolete now, but it's small things like that that people will miss out on.

  39. kitnplayn says – reply to this

    139

There ought to be a law that says, when you buy ANY product from ANY company that has a consumable property attached to it (like a camera needing film or replacement parts) that they should be required to make the film or replacement parts available for the duration of the lifetime of the purchaser. If they go out of business, they should be required to either show that they have transferred that obligation to another company, or pay a huge fine as a deterrent.

  41. R.I.P. Polaroid says – reply to this

    141

That's really a shame. I think one of my first cameras was a polaroid instant. I liked it so much that I bought a lot of other models throughout the years. The instant camera was an innovative idea that came in handy for so many people. They were always good at the scene of an accident, and one could take a pic of friends w/o worrying if it came out, etc. It's really a shame that they feel they have to jump on the digital camera bandwagon. Their instant camera products were so unique. This seriously may be their downfail.

  59. Edwin H. Land says – reply to this

    159

Pumpkin, you always get the story wrong. Polaroid already stopped making cameras over a year ago, commercial ones the year before that. Polaroid film is expensive and produced pictures with a strange world of colors that only exist in…well, the world of Polaroid film. Not exactly a “green” product - every ten pictures you throw away a cartridge that contains a battery pack that ends up in a land fill. Be all romantic if you must, but you’re really five years too late. The Polaroid of days gone past really ceased to be when they went bankrupt and left their long time employees who had saved in their retirement plan with nothing. The real story is that Polaroid is the Enron of the photography world who really only survives today by way of putting the old Polaroid name on otherwise junky electronic stuff.
