Her dad was a well known physician in Providence who served the Portuguese community there. Her family is originally from the Azores islands, that's off the coast of Portugal/Spain.

The Vagina Monologues is intended to be empowering for women. "Cunt" is the name of one of the monologues, and it's about reclaiming the word. Our society has taught us to perk up and be offended upon hearing such words as Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, Tits… the seven dirty words. However, the usage of the word Cunt should not have been bleeped since under the context of its use, it was not intended to describe or depict sexual and excretory activities and organs. It was being used in reference to the title of the monologue. IMO, censoring the title is censoring art, which goes against the first amendment.
