That is tragic.
"Why's it so hard to love one another?" You yourself are a huge cause of hate Perez. You are divisive, you mock and insult others…. how you can even begin to ask why it's hard to love one another is just unbelievable.
Used to live in Oxnard - our son would have been in 7th grade at that very same school had we stayed in California. Scary thought, my heart goes out to BOTH boys' families. What more will it take before something's done to prevent kids getting their hands on guns and bringing them into schools??? So very sad.

That is SO heartbreaking. I am very sure the teachers were well aware of this boy being bullied for some time, and chose to look the other way. There had been altercations beforehand, for God's sake. This was actually my Jr. High school, and I still live in the area… it's so sad to see this kind of thing happen in such a small community, which sadly has a huge gang folowing. We need to make changes fast, before another young soul is taken.

I used to work with the "suspects" father (single father might I add) a few months back. He has moved on to another company but I know many people who still have contact with him…I heard that this was his son yesterday by a good friend and it saddend me very much because I know that he was a good kid who loved martial arts and wanted to be so many things when he grew up and his father always tyalked to highly of him. I wish the best for the "victims" family. This is just so sad to me and I will pray for my former co-workers family to help them through this horrible time. May god forgive him he is only a child.

Outrageous! It makes me very sad this has happened yet again. Homophobia is alive and well in this country. This story makes me reflect on my own personal mental and physical abuse going up gay in high school. What are these boys so afraid of? Needless to say the shooter will get plenty of “gay” action in the pokey (no pun intended)!

With the help of LGBT and GLAAD, among the many other wonderful and colorful organizations, we can prevent this from happening again or at least not as often. This is a terrible tragedy and no one should endure anything at all like this.

I taught band at EO Green Jr High a few years back and the weird thing is that the kids are required to wear uniforms….white collared shirts and dark blue pants. So when i heard about this shooting and that it was between two boys and one not liking how the other dressed, i was kind of shocked. Its such a terrible thing to happen…such a tragedy.
It is really sad that two young boys are that messed up. Both of them needed some guidance by their parents. Gun control isn't the issue. Parents need to step up to the plate and be parents. Too many kids left to their own devices with no discipline. There is way to much hate in this world. If the young victim was gay that is no reason to kill him, however to believe that everyone is going to accept homosexuals is as much a fairy tale as to believe that everyone is going to accept blacks, Hispanics, Jews, Christians and White (yes there are those who hate white people)

Oxnard is my town and E.O Green is my old school. What happened to that poor kid is terrible. Especially because it was obvious that he had a rough child hood. He lived at a home for troubled teenagers which make me think that maybe his own parents didn’t even accept him.
Hopefully the suspect gets tried as an adult because it might have been premeditated murder which is a 1st degree offense. What a retard that kid was because what he did will ruin his life. He deserves to be punished as an adult if he was dumb enough to bring a gun to school and commit murder.

The article say the suspect may get 50 years to life. There also the possibility this will be escalated into a hate crime if the murder was because of the victim's sexual orientation. The suspect deserves nothing less than a death sentence!

What a brave young man, showing up to school unafraid though he knew he was different, being himself, standing up to bullies when so many of us would have hidden behind some generic mask of mall-approved conformity. To think such bravery was snuffed out by a "person" too cowardly to challenge him to a fair fight, who shot him though he was unarmed. I hope his family can take some comfort in the fact that not many people live as well, as bravely and as true to the light inside themselves, though they may live 100 years too terrified to venture far beyond the dim shadow of mediocrity. That light shines a little brighter because you posted this here, Perez. May it illuminate all that is bright and beautiful among those creatively maladjusted souls rising up among us at this treacherous dawn of an unknown new world. As a gay student, hearing stories like this makes me so upset. I had heard about the shooting a few days ago, but I had no idea it was a hate crime. That disgusts me; this is 2008 people, it's time to grow up and learn tolerance and respect for others. I don't shoot men when they hit on me because I like girls, because I am a mature individual who understands that everyone has different preferences. That's why this is America, our country was founded to ensure freedom. This is where freedom of expression and freedom to be yourself gets King? Brain dead? Fantastic country we live in.
I think there should be strict gun laws and that also includes possession and control of the gun. Why wasn't this gun locked up? This makes me sick that humans would abuse their freewill like this, let alone be educated that this type of behavior is ok. What are these parents thinking?

How sad. Being a 13/14 year old now is hard. I have a child that age. I am trying very hard to be the kinda of parent that talks to my 3 kids. I am teaching to Love people for who they are. Not for what color their skin is or if they love another boy or girl. People need to talk to their children more. They need to teach to love not hate. We need to just love one another!

Being a gay man myself…I remember middle school being the WORST years of my life. Day after day I was constantly teased and made fun of. The teachers did absolutely nothing. Maybe the death of this poor boy will serve as a lesson for these teachers to pay attention and actually do something. I wish they would've in my case.
My little sister went to that school. It's absolutely heartbreaking. I never will understand why or how children could hurt one another like that. I'm just thankful that she was not hurt and did not see it happen. It really hits close to home knowing this event which is on Fox 11 News is something that happened in our little town.
hobie, I respectfully disagree about segregating out the "different" students and having them go to a different school. Unfortunately, in the real world, one is going to have to face others who just can't tolerate someone who is different. I understand what you are saying though—Junior high can be horrible. I was outcasted in Jr. High for cutting my hair short and dressing different. I guess I could've conformed and all would be well. If anything, the bullies should be punished a little bit more harshly. I saw teachers ignoring what they did and wanting to be liked by the bullies and popular students. It's truly pathetic. But I have to say that I'm a little bit glad I stuck it out and saw what's really out there. It made me a tougher person later on. I'm more for if a student is 16, that they can start college—You get a little bit higher maturity level there than high school.
I live nearby where this happened and we are all heartbroken. I don't think the school had any idea it would escalate like this and that is definitely a problem. They were obviously aware there was an issue between the students involved. My prayers are for both families. There is a ton of research that shows that teenagers brains are not finished developing and their impulse control isn't the same as an adult's. An upset 14 year old boy with a gun is a disaster waiting to happen.
This kind of shit freaks me out every time my boys leave for school. There are so many angry kids out there and there is so much desperation for acceptance in schools. To the posters asking why his parents let him wear certain clothing to school. Actually the student that was killed was in foster care and living in a group home for abused, neglected, and troubled kids. He rode a bus from the group home to school.

The thing that bothers me, however, about the article is the comment that "schools must teach students that they may not like each other, but they must respect each other." That is not the school's job. That is a parent's job.

How disgusting. The saddest part about this situation is that it happens all the time. Perhaps not due to sexual orientation, however, punk kids with parents that were unqualified to raise kids commit very adult crimes all the time. Not only do they often ruin lives, but they are then in institutions that are supported by tax payers including those they victimized (at least until they are let loose upon society once again and start living off some other type of tax payer funded assistance)!! This mentally wasted punk's parents should pay for his incarceration at minimum– if not his execution. Nobody, however, should be surprised because this garbage is what happens (daily) when people are not responsible or accountible for their own actions. Yes, it's horrible. But why is a 15 year old BOY wearing make-up and high heels to school? 15 year old girls shouldn't be wearing high heels. Why do people have to FLAUNT their differences?
