Save The Whales Seals

797522431.jpg

Pamela Anderson is shaking her titties tonight at the Crazy Horse strip club in Paris, but before that, she took some time out to fight for animal rights.

The former Baywatch babe visited the Brigitte Bardot foundation for animal rights to support its fight against baby seal hunting.

Anderson displays the on-line petition, aimed at the Canadian government, her native country.

The "Fishermen" are killing their own lively hood, and overfished everything available to them. Don't blame it on the seals. This is a "HUNT"??? –the fucking things can barely MOVE! What kind of a "HUNT" is THAT!?? BOYCOTT CANADIAN SEAFOOD!!!!!!!

    Re: Informed
Because this post wasn't referring to those issues.
For the record, I'm willing to bet the same people speaking out on behalf of seals are also vegetarians (like myself) who recognize just as much cruelty in the factory farming trade. (slaughterhouses, sow crates, overcrowded chicken coops, etc, etc, etc.) But again, this post was not about that, was it?

And as for those claiming the seal hunt is Canada's major source of food… That may have been true decades ago, but today there are options! Have a salad. Make a tofurkey sammich. Evolve.

    Re: LINDSAY

    Dear LINDSAY,

Well before livestock were farmed people hunted in the wild. This hunting was done in a fashion that was not overtly interfering with the population. The seal hunt is regulated in this manner. So you don't want people to have livestock (cows etc.) and you don't want people to hunt animals in the wild. Would you like to magically create an animal for us meat eaters to eat? What exactly is it that you want? The entire world to be vegetarian ? You can't impose your views on everyone.

Please, stop posting nonsense insults and get an education. If you do have an education you might want to start worrying about your country's education system because it has failed you.

Get your facts straight. Seals are still pups when their fur starts to change(molt)…they are bludgened in the head, some are shot(but bullets leave holes in the fur), they are not used for meat. It's since been proven that over fishing have depleted the cod….not the seals….
Read up on your facts, look at video from the last three years, and then tell us it's OK……Most Canadians I know, and have spoken to oppose this slaughter….

I always like to reference "Planet of the Apes," and write if our species, the human ANIMAL were really in that position, wouldn't we want to be treated with the utmost compassion, empathy, sanctity, and with the most humane ways of doing things?

And just one more thing…. There are areas in the US where the bird population is threatened - due to cat overpopulation. But do we engage in a massive "cat hunt"? While there are ornithologists who might like to, instead most feral cat colonies are managed through Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programs. This prevents further overpopulation, without harming any animals. In fact, Australians also have a TNR program for their koala population. (As eucalyptus becomes scarce.) Why couldn't this work for Canadian seals?

I understand that its an easy photo-op for bleeding heart celebs but 9 times out of 10, as usual, you freaks get it worng. The seals have decimated the fish poplation around Newfoundland, and despite what you may believe, they have increased in populatiop 3 fold over thelast 20 years - these have to be killed, i'm sorry you find it disturbing but what would you have them do, give them sleeping pills and send off to that great baby seal resting place in the sky. Wake up, this is how people kill fish, with bats and picks - yes, the fur is used, but so are the oils which comprise a lot of the Omega oils in Canada - the issue is not as simple as your bleeding heart would like to think - why dont you stop being stupid, and come up to Canada, talk to people, and do this thing we call learing - any by learning I don't mean Youtube, that great edumacator of yankees - fuck i hate stupid people

    221

I didn't realize birds were a source of income in the us.

Seals aren't hunted for the hell of it.

The idea of trapping and neutering/spaying seals just seems laughable, i'm sure it's hardly feasable financially.
Why change a way of life just because some extremists thinks it's mean to hurt the cuddly-wuddly ickle seals. Killing them takes care of the population issue and is a source of income for our province. Enough Newfoundlanders have to leave their families to go to Alberta to make a living due to lack of job opportunities, taking away the seal hunt would add to that number.

  22. cgeees says – reply to this

    222

Yes they are going to go out and get seals and take then to a vet and neuter or spay them. Are you serious?

  23. Newfoundlandgirl says – reply to this

    223

Everyone who says the seal hunt is needless seriously needs to get their facts straight. The seals arn't killed for their fur, every single part of the seal is used! Also, they are not clubbed and baby seals also arn't killed. How can toy agrue against someone whos life involves the seal hunt? If it was stopped the seals would hugely overpopulate and would eat all their food, and then they would die, because they would have no food. Not to mention the jobs that would be lost if it was ended. SERIOUSLY give us a break, find something worthwhile to fight against, like a cure for AIDS or cancer, or countrys that are in poverty

I find it so funny when people see cattle and livestock as more humane than an animal that is hunted. People say "it's ok, because it's food if it's being raised for food". But, I mean, which sounds better, living in a cage your entire life, eating all kinds of chemical laden food, or growing up free in the wild and meeting your demise after years of natural living. Would you critisize the beautiful way of life of Canada's indigenous peoples? or the Native American of the United States? I think it's silly. If you hunt an animal and use every part of it's body, and are thankful for it than it's not greed, it's survival, it's human nature.

ANYWAY they industry continues to go down hill as fish, lobster, crab, (pretty much anything a seal can get there hands on) get scarser. The fact that they show those f*ckin lame ass commercails and protest signs, etc, with these lil fluffly white baby seals with sad eyes makes me sick, why dont they show a F*cking 400 black gob of shit eatin hundreds of pounds of fish per day?.. not impressed and as for the comment made early… its not just a "native" way of life… its an east coast way of life… i had to make that correction.

    Re: spacedaisie
Your post makes no sense, you're being very slective in what you are reading.
Let me break this down for you.
a)Spaying/neutering seals - Costs money. It costs $500 to spay/neuter a domestic CAT.
b)Hunting seals is INCOME for our province.

Do you understand how these two options are different, one harmful and one beneficial to our economy?

It's quite obvious you know NOTHING of Newfoundland's economy. If you knew of the state our schools, roads, and hospitals are in you'd be singing another tune, honey. Perhaps I should look up the budget announcements from this year, just to give you an idea? I also don't know what part of Newfoundlanders having to LEAVE the province to work on the mainland because there is NO WORK here you do not understand. My mother, 7 of my uncles and 6 of my aunts have had to leave to find work. Any newfies out there to back me up on this?

I'm sorry, but I'd rather a seal grow up without a mommy than a human child who's mother works in Alberta 9 months of the year.

Also, incase you've forgotten, the Canadian dollar has only been worth more than the american dollar for a very short period of time. The seal hunt has been happening for centuries.

Re: Newfoundlandgirl – Strangley enough, the balance was always maintained before the interferance of the human animal, the cod and the seals survived for thousands of years side by side, the balance was maintained by supply and demand, and remarkably, when man started fishing, there were still seals and fish!.
Now since the human animal has decimated the cod stocks, it now believes it can alter the balance, by controling the number of seals….and the human animal is supposed to be the most intelligent animal!!!

It is misleading when people write that it is illegal in Canada to kill baby seals. Technically it is right, but do you know that a seal ceases to be a baby at 10 days old ? Yes, that's right, 10 days, that is when the mother seal stops feeding the baby. Also it is not a way of life. It is a party for men who want to go away from home for a week with other men and have a party and be cruel to seals at the same time. When they arrive on the site for the annual hunt, the first thing they unload from the boat is the cases of beer. They get drunk for the whole duration of the massacre. Stop this, as a Canadian I am ashamed for my country. Congratulations Pam. And if she got an abortion, it is legal and it is her own business.

I'm not from Newfoundland, but I came here for university. Orignially, I was VERY against the seal hunt, I didn't understand why people would willingly go out in the cold to kill animals. I thought it was like a English Fox Hunt, just for the fun. But when I came here I saw that these people really need it. They don't actually, like, enjoy hunting but they do it because they need the income. Seriously, there are NO jobs here. I love the Newfoundland culture and it's people. I think people need to come here and see how the seal hunt is run before they start flinging insults. This isn't LA (where I am from), a lot of what people eat is caught themselves, which I think is more humane than raising captive animals. I don't eat factory farmed products, because I see factory farming as inhumane, however I have to realize there are 6 billion people on the earth that need to eat, be realistic.

What a horrible generalization. I suppose you also think all newfies are just drunks with irish accents? It IS a way of life for many. Not everyone runs out to a grocery store for a steak.

As for the "abortion - it's legal" statement you just made, yet another hypocritical post. The seal hunt is legal too. Lets kill human babies but not seals? That makes a hellluva lot of sense(I am pro-choice, just pointing the contradiction there).

Yes, it is true that fishing has caused a depletion of cod stocks, but what would you expect us to eat in outport newfoundland, a place where grocery stores were introduced fifty years ago? To be realistic, the seal hunt is NOT going to end. I'm not being spiteful about it, I'm just stating a fact. If all of america put a boycott on Atlantic seafood, I'm sure it still wouldn't stop. We are a proud and stubborn people and we'd rather live off flipper pie for the rest of our lives than give up our heritage.

Re: disgusting – Farm what? We can't grow crops here, you'd know that if you actually read ANYTHING about Newfoundland. Our soil is too acidic for pretty much anything but stunted pine and berry bushes. Livestock can barely survive here because the surfice of the land is too rough for hooved animals. Unless you did a complete overhaul of your land they would almost be crippled, that sounds pretty humane. And I seriously hope you don't think we're too lazy to get up at (pft) 6 in the morning. I just finished my Newfoundland Anthropology course and I could blow your ass out of the water on this subject. Even into the 60's the women of outport Newfoundland would get up at 4 in the morning to make bread and jam everyday. They would cook 8 meals a day including mug-ups and then tend to the root garden. My grandmother still does this, every morning. She would definately call you lazy if you said you got up at 6.

    260

I think the main issue here is in the way they're being killed. The only reason they're being beaten to death is to keep their fur unharmed and sell it for as good a price as possible. Clubbing is not even guaranteed to kill them and many of the seals are being skinned alive. Only because of the fur. Use proper weapons and it's alright imo.

  61. P3T3R says – reply to this

    261

It's sad when celebrities lend their faces to causes they are not well informed of. The Canadian seal hunt is a necessary and humane intervention that prevents overpopulation, and brings a monetary bonus to struggling families. Baby Seals, often referred to as white coats have not been harvested for over a decade. The killing of any animal is not a pretty sight, even when done in the most humane manner. The image of blood covering the ice is not pretty, however, putting a white sheet on the floor of a beef slaughter-house would create the same type of contrast. People like Pam Anderson and Paul McCartney would make better use of their time selling their celebrity in other areas.

  62. Pam Sucks says – reply to this

    262

Re: Karen – Even if the EU did ban the hunt, it would still take place, it may not be as large, but we'd still be able to conduct trade with the rest of Canada. Mr. Harper would have some serious troubles if he boycotted the hunt, which, luckily, he does not, he completely condones it. As did our Liberal PMs. Besides, even if we had no one to trade with, we would still eat seal ourselves. We use all the parts of the seal and many of us thank God for them. I understand people being upset, but most of the people that oppose are people who just see the likes of pammy and Mucca and think "my god, that's a terrible thing to do for no reason". then they get it into their heads that it is needless. I agree, pammy doesn't have to eat seal, so she shouldn't go get herself one. As for me, I can't afford to dine at thai restaurants, and have a personal chef, so I'll thank god when my grandmother sends me a brace of hares and a moose steak because it's probably keeping me out of the hospital while I'm doing my honors. lol.

I'm sure if Perez has read this he's learned something and at least found it interesting. Hopefully someone has walked away from this with something to think about. That said, I'm going to go eat some flipper pie and read my book "Death on the Ice" with the seal skin cover by the light of a seal oil lamp.

In the canadian seal hunt, White Coat Seal are not hunted it is against the LAW…also every part of a seal is used, we do not hunt just for the coat as many of u would like to believe…Omega 3…try a Seal oil capsule (two a day) is way more benefit than eating your salmon everyday.

No baby seal are being hunted in Canada anymore. It is illegal… Aldults are but it is a question of balance. You have to understand that seal hunting has been going on for many centuries and to stop it would mean to destroy the natural balance that has been for long established…

They don't kill small little baby seals with the white fur that everyone sees in pictures…seals are extremely over populated and this is population control not torture…a handful of people might club seals nowadays most are killed with guns…get a grip and some proper information people!

Re: LINDSAY – actually most of the seals that are hunted in eastern and northern canada are killed for the meat and NOT the fur, which makes it pointless to kill the infant seals as they are still too small to have any significant amount of meat… and aklothough there are some seal hunters that do still club seals, the majority of them shoot the seals.

Re: you like the blood money. – The Newfoundland fisheries study in 2006, done every year, found that the seal population had tripled since 1970. That's not normal. If they weren't hunted after a few years they would actually cause the starvation of their own species. I don't know why anyone would think we enjoy killing? God, people, watch the lion king, it's the circle of life, lol.

Some people are so narrow minded, and join their PETA organizations, or some other sort of cult and believe everything that they are being told. They really do not know the truth in anything, and believe whatever they see, read or hear. Honestly people, haven't your mothers ever told you not to believe everything thing you hear. OR how about "Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear." You people are so gullable, and just play follow the leader. As for the seal hunt being banned, it will never happen (because it is not a gruesome hunt, that drunk men do for fun) so you all are just wasting your time. Instead of joing the cult of "save the seals" why dont you follow some other more meaningful organization like Scientology. Everybodies doing it!!!

seal hunting is necessary. there has been an abundance of seals living in northern canada and the hunt is necessary to keep everything in balance. it is also a way for people who don't have income in the winter to make a living, to continue scraping by. they do not club these seals to death, despite what these organizations try to make you believe. it is not animal cruelty, it is hunting like it would be for any other animal. there is a cap on how many seals are allowed to be hunted, they are not allowed to overhunt. it's all ridiculous.

The people who protest the seal hunt just keep saying the same thing over and over: "it's cruel", "they are defenseless", "they're cute", "how would you feel if you were being beaten". But they refuse to dispute any of the rebuttles such as: it's an an important part of the Newfoundland econonmy that is otherwise crippled, it sustains people who cannot afford food all year round, it keeps the cod population in check, and in turn that of other cod-eating animals, the animals are not raised in pens in inhumane conditions, they get to be free before they are used in the "circle of life", as Pam Sucks said. But you know what, i'm sure if the seal hunt protesters actually came up with some solutions, newfoundlanders would listen. so please, protesters, tell us, how will newfoundland finance itself when the economy is going belly up? how will those who cannot get jobs feed their kids? What happens when not only the cod dies because of overpopulated seals (and yes, I have seen them on the ice flows, they are severly overpopulated) eat it all? then the seals go extinct, plus all the other animals that depend on the cod? seriously, i want some answers. I was against the hunt, and now I see that it is needed. Come here and open your minds.

Could the seals be at least KILLED IN A PROPER WAY (not clubbed several times and skinned alive) ??!

  91. Proud Newfoundlander says – reply to this

It's illegal to kill a white coat. Look it up in the canadian criminal code. Those of you accusing Canadians of killing baby seals are right, some do, but those that choose to do so do it illegally and face criminal charges when and if they are caught.

Also those videos you see, they're very rare cases. Most seals are shot in the head, quick and humane. It's true that the club is sometimes used, but usually when the bullet doesn't work - in order to make swift work to put the seal out of it's misery. There are dozens upon dozens of government , and World Wildlife Fund research papers on that very subject.

I myself am a vegetarian, but I understand that there is a food chain, one that is incredibly unbalanced when we let the seals over populate. They deplete the cod stock off the east coast which in turn puts hundreds of thousands of canadians out of work. By hunting the seals we not only help to replenish the cod stocks but we employ people who may other wise starve of freeze due to unemployment.

For those of you who would like to learn more about this topic and how misinformed some celebs are on this very topic I would check out the debate that was on Larry King a few years back between Sit Paul and his Former Wife Heather Mills, and Premier Danny Williams
