Save The Whales Seals

797522431.jpg

Pamela Anderson is shaking her titties tonight at the Crazy Horse strip club in Paris, but before that, she took some time out to fight for animal rights.

The former Baywatch babe visited the Brigitte Bardot foundation for animal rights to support its fight against baby seal hunting.

Anderson displays the on-line petition, aimed at the Canadian government, her native country.

Hi there, a friend directed me to this site and I figured I'd offer up my knowledge to this debate. I'm a veterinary technician and I go out with the seal hunt every year. It's my job to make sure that each seal is expired before being skinned. Also, it's my job to report any mistreatment of the animals or hunting of whitecoats/bluebacks, if any such goes on the sealer must leave the ice immediately and is peneltied by a large fine or even incarceration. When kids ask me about the seal hunt I explain it like this: it's as if the people were lions and the seals were antelope. Without lions the antelope would eat all the grass then die. Seals migrated to Newfoundland from the north a couple hundred years ago, because there was such an abnormal abundance of cod. However, seals have no natural preditors in Newfoundland, and that is an ecological problem. Seals reproduce almost every year. That's a lot of seals. And some of you are absolutely right: if it wasn't for humans, nature would have balanced itself out, preditors would have also migrated here, however they would not have been suited to the climate and would have become nomadic, travelling here for part of the year and back for the other. This is one place in the world where the people have blended into the environment. The seals need humans as much as humans need the seals.

First of all, they are not defenseless; actually, they're savages; they would eat any seafood in sight and would also kill any of you… they are savage. Secondly, they are not harmless. Their population is massive and they eat any seafood in sight. Hence the reason why Newfoundland has experienced a cod moratorium since the early 90s. Yes, many North Americans took part in overfishing (including USA) but also, seals are exponentially slowing down the increase of cod stocks simply by eating everything!

Come to Newfoundland. Witness the seal hunt, they way it is done in the 21st century. You realize PETA shows footage from the 70s, right? The activities that you see are now illegal in Canada. And when you come, stop down to Ches's or any restaurant for that matter… you will see seal on the menu if it is in season! We do eat it and man, is it ever good! You say go get a real job and make money? How about these organizations like PETA stop taking your misinformed money? The fishing industry is alive and well, employing many Canadians.

Getting your info from an organization that is either aggressively 'for' or 'against' something is also stupid. Most times, they feature stats and info that is distorted to defend either side of the fence. Go to a reputable source like cbc.ca or statistics canada.

I will never understand how anyone can look into the sweet innocent eyes of these seals and with such obvious pleasure beat their brains to a bloody pulp. The viciousness and brutality of these murders tells the world much about the cold-hearted humans who with malice and forethought attack these helpless creatures as well as those heartless humans who condone and encourage it. The lack of compassion and humanity shows through clearly in the comments I have read here. I will never know what it is like to have my hands literally soaked with the blood of innocent creatures as I hug my daughter or grandchildren since my conscience will not allow me to do such a heinous thing. How sad for the entire human race and for this planet we call home that there are those who will.

Jesus Christ you people will believe anything the media tells you! It's just a marketing ploy to get you to donate money!

BABY seals haven't been hunted for 20 years, it's just adults now. There are MILLIONS of seals in the arctic, but of course we could always let the population explode and watch them eat ALL the fish in the ocean and suffer a slow and painful death due to starvation… yeah you go girl.

Humans can be savages too. That's an odd word to call a seal which is an animal just the same as we are. I'd be angry too if I was just about to be killed.

    411

Hmmm, a gun, club, etc. vs. a wild seal. Defenseless or not, explain how that's fair? We are the cause of most of the imbalance in this world. I can look down my block now and see that 90% of my neighbors did not put their recycling bins out and usually don't. Where's all those recycables going? We do what we want now without a care for the future. These animals deserve for us to look for better solutions to problems. How can one argue that unless you are not for the santity of life and have no empathy for animals. I do not trust anyone who doesn't like animals or doesn't care. "A nation is only as good as the way it treats it's animals." And so is our world.

  12. TL says – reply to this

    412

Also statistically speaking, I think it's about 1 in 10 people are sociopaths so that would explain why some people do not like, have reverence for, or care what happens to the animals of our earth.

"The seal population has looked after itself for thousand of years without human intervention, and, as the world knows, this slaughter is about one thing only: making money. The Canadian government will stream all of the pelts into the fashion industry and this is the reason why the baby seals are killed with spiked clubs that crush their skulls - any damage to their pelts is avoided."

  15. Sasha says – reply to this

    415

Why must one choose animals or children? I don't get it. Please explain. This is way I feel: EVERYTHING on the earth is important and relevant to OUR very survival. We must have reverence for all life and that goes for trees, plants, forests, etc. too. Animals have no voice and thank God there are people who give them one or there would be no animals or any resources left on this earth the way we strip the lands and seas with our self-serving irresponsible ways. Then where would humans be?

Wow, I have never seen so much ignorance in one place before. Fur is dangerous. It is treated with chemiclas such as formaldehyde and chromium which is linked to cancer and respiratory problems. Polar bears love to eat seals and fish. When you kill seals you are the ones that are knocking nature out of whack. Polar bears now have to swim 60 miles or more to eat a meal once a week. You just drive down to Dead lobster and fatten yourself up. Just because you have been doing something for a long time and call it your "culture" does not make it right. Can you imagine if America still upheld slavery under a "it is our culture" stance? Everyone needs to be educated about the abhorent practices of the seal and fur trade. People have the right to know that they are poisoning themselves, and others around them by buying fur. You all need to evolve a bit, it is the 21st century after all. Oh, and I think we should start hunting more Megans HEEHEE.

  23. CGEEES says – reply to this

    423

Why do people keep saying that the Seals population was kept in chexk for thousands of years because it is nature and then human intervention disrupted it. If that is you perspective then you also believe that people are not part of nature, which is false/ we are living animals just like every other animal. They eat each other to survive and we also eat animals. That is simply the way that it is. We are part of this circle so it is only nature that we survive by consuming animals and using their fur oil etc in order to survive. Thats the way it has been and that is the way it will continue to be. For the people who do not understand how harsh of an environment Newfoundland has you have no grounds for comment because you just do not understand.

    Re: Furious

What part of NO POLAR BEARS in Newfoundland or Newfoundland's waters did you not quite grasp, there are no natural predators, besides human for seals. Humans are naturally omnivores, which is why we have canine teeth.

It IS hard to become a vegetarian when you've grown up on meat, I've said in previous posts that I was a vegetarian and member of peta for 2 years. I became severly anemic because my body did not get all the nutrients it required. I have to get b12 shots and take iron pills for the rest of my life because of this. I also now have gastrointestinal disordrs. It's not easy for just anyone to go veg. Especially if they are predisposed to such condtions.

If anyone has readhe pro-seal hunt posts, and that of the vet tech that just posted you have no grounds for arguements, you're beating a dead seal just for the sake of agreeing with celebretards.

  35. ontario gal says – reply to this

    435

    Wow, where to start.

First of all, as an Ontarian who has travelled to NL many times, it really is one of the best places on earth! To those that accuse the seal hunt of being perpetuated by greed, you have OBVIOUSLY never been to Newfoundland or Labrador.

Secondly, I have found the comments of the pro-seal hunt Canadians — Newfoundlanders and otherwise — to be informed, factual, well-spoken and most of all, even-tempered. I think it's hilarious that many of the posters arguing against the hunt are resorting to personal insults and vulgarities, as well as telling these obviously educated people that "U are ignerent yoo shud git an educashun!" Honestly. Education is more than digesting everything that popular culture and celebrities offer you. Unfortunately, Canadians do have a stereotype of the "ignorant American" and "y'all" are doing nothing to squelch that on this board.

Also, I can't believe that Americans — the inventors and perpetuators of the factory farm — believe that hunting wild game is barbaric; however, they state that breeding cattle and livestock is perfectly fine. Do you really believe that it is more humane to squish pigs and chickens in cages where they have no room to move or exercise, pump them full of hormones, and slaughter them in writhing masses where often many do not die until third and fourth attempts than to kill a wild animal who has lived as it was meant to?

  36. ontario gal again says – reply to this

    436

By the way, just because seal is not a native dish for you, but steak — or should I say MacDonald's bacon cheeseburgers — is, does not mean that it is not a food. Many Northern Canadians and Inuit have been consuming seal for ages. Would it be okay for us to eat them if we locked the seals in a pen, gave them growth hormones and bred them before slaughter?

Maybe it is the fact that we use the whole seal that angers you. After all, the Worldwatch Institute has deemed Americans as having the most waste products produced per capita in the world.

The argument that seals are depleting the cod stocks is absolutely true. For those anti-seal-hunters who retorted that it was and is our own fault through overfishing, perhaps it was, at first. For YEARS now, Canada has had a cod moratorium to control stocks. It is giant fishing boats from other countries that come in with the sweeping nets that have continuously and overtly ignored sustainable practices and flouted our laws. Most of those are asian and european countries, but the US is not innocent either. My husbands father cannot go out and catch one cod with his brothers by law, but the Europeans can scrape the ocean floor to snap all our fish, taking along any plant life that might sustain the few that escaped!

    ….

  37. ontario gal yet again says – reply to this

    437

Finally, I am incredulous that people from a nation that makes it harder to give blood than get a gun,

a nation that conducts illegal wars and takes it upon itself as part of manifest destiny to police the world and overthrow leaders,

a nation that destroys farmers crops in South America while poisoning their children,

a nation that has crime rates heretofore unseen in the first world,

a nation that lets their poor and elderly waste away while the richer get richer,

a nation that provides free health care for none,

and a nation that follows the wisdom and divine guidance of George W. Bush can dare to comment on a Canadian practice (tradition!) that is ecologically sustaining, economically vital, and legislatively regulated to prevent cruelty and abuse. Clean up your own backyard before disparaging Canada! (PS, I have met a lot of awesome individual Americans, most of them just aren't here!)

    443

Canada banned hunting baby seals also known as 'whitecoats' in 1987. Especially now, due the fact that communities who do hunt seals are watched by the gov't of Canada, not too mention sooo many activist groups, and the media - hunting baby seals is not done or virtually impossible. People should be very careful of the facts before they jump on the bandwagon for another celebrity endorsed, trendy cause. Additonally, the indigenous societies who have depended on seal as a source for sustenance for centuries would be robbed of there livelihood and survival resources if the hunt is banned altogether.

Oh for God's sake! Will people please check out the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) article on the seal hunt??? (www.cbc.ca/news/background/sealhunt)THIS is a credible source! Not PETA, who quite obviously have a conflict of interest in this situation…The hunting of white coats does not exist anymore! Furthermore, seals might look cute, but they will bite your hand off if you get too close. They are eating the depleted cod stocks off the coast of Newfoundland. If you want yer fish n' chips, then kill the seals! :P

Also, the fur is not the only part of the seal used, the whole carcass is. Ever heard of seal flipper pie? No? How about omega-3 fatty acids? PETA has been no more accurate in their claims about the seal hunt than Pamela Anderson's breasts are natural. The videos they commonly show depicting the cruel clubbing of baby seals are more than 25 years old and even then, only demonstrate a few idiots acting for a camera.

The commercial seal hunt is a very important source of income to a large portion of Newfoundland fishermen, not to mention a very historically significant way of life in this province. It is because of issues such as this that I sometimes question the right to free speech…

I'm not that young and i have never seen a baby seal brutally killed / skinned as you have said. You keep telling people to do their "homework" well let me tell you it has done you no good, but show you how things may have been done in the past. You can not tell me to do my homework since I have witnessed it many times. I have been a part of hunting seals for some 15 years now, and i have never NEVER seen a seal hunted the way you have explained! 452

I fight for the humane treatment of ALL animals, even us sometimes ignorant human animals. To me, there's a difference between them dolphins, seals, etc. and livestock. There has to be a line drawn somewhere. If not, we should just start clubbing humans. This world's getting a bit overpopulated with them too. And I'm sure we can use every part of them. As I've written before, look at the face of a dog horizontally piled up on other dogs in a cage waiting to be killed for food and look at the of a chicken and you will see the difference. America has it's problems too. It's not the whose country is better game. Why not think of better solutions to things? Why? Please explain.

Our history proves that we are a people that try to look at all angles to a situation before jumping onto bandwagons, maybe you guys should give it a try. And it's not just making a living, it's the fact that if we didn't kill seals they would die out around the Atlantic provinces after eating all their prey because they have no wild preditors. Without the hunt the overpopulation would crush themselves as a species. Why won't anyone comment on that fact?

  59. Pam Sucks says – reply to this

    459

and for people that say "oh, nature will even itself out", yes, it would even itself out… the seals will die because they are not native to here, such as moose are not native to here. Seals don't have a 'stop, i'm full' button, they will eat and eat and eat because they build blubber. The will die without the hunt to control their numbers. And believe me, there are A LOT of seals, I went out last April to tag and count them.

Re: LISA – It's not "our" fish, it's the fist that belongs to the whales, the puffins, the seals, the groundfish, the people. Seals eat to build up fat, they would eat all the fish if they could, then the seals and whales and puffins and grounfish would all die or migrate away from here. you're saying "stop animal cruelty" but to let them destroy their own sources of food because there are no natural preditors here would be just as cruel as ALL of them would die of slow painful starvation.

Re: LISA – Yes, I truly am a dumb "asswhole" I guess. But while they are young, they are hunted after their (which is the proper spelling of the word, btw) mothers have abandoned them, so while you may consider them babies, the mother seals certainly seem to think that they're old enough to be on their own.

I love both Canada and America, but I do not condone certain things that each country does. Eg, America's aerial shooting of wolves. It's not about chickens vs. seals to me, although I believe there is a difference between animals. That's why I am not for killing dophins, whales, seals, monkeys, apes, dogs, cats, humans etc. I am for the humane treatment of all living creatures and for green ways of doing things for our planet's health and survival, therefore for our health and survival. It's also not about animals vs. children for me. I regard both as being important and I try to help improve conditions for all living creatures. If we do not take care of even the "lowest" on the chain it is detrimental to us. That's why scientists study frogs, etc. to see how they are doing because it is a direct connection to us. We can always improve as far as I'm concerned. If we didn't do things to advance to more civilized heights, we'd still be in the Middle Ages.

As we all should know by now, with power, comes great responsibility. We, as the human animal, and supposedly the most intelligent animal on earth, have that power, just as presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, and queens do for their countries, thus affecting the world. Everything is a microcosm of something bigger. We should at least try to regard all life with reverence, act accordingly, and this world would be a lot better place.

Re: Christine – come on! Most of the seas that are killed are done so in human ways, usually with a gun. They get footage of any killing that looks cruel and post it for dramatic effect. Of couse it looks barberic, you have animals bleeding all over white ice - but I'm sure any slaughterhouse that kills cows pigs etc. is nice and clean without any sign of blod to be found…

  72. Shelley says – reply to this

    472

Hey Perez, I thought you and your readers should know that Canada does not hunt or kill baby seals, only fully grown adult seals. And don't believe that the seal hunters club them over the heads either, they are shot in the head just like cows in slaughter houses are. Also seals are plentiful and not endangered, and the seal hunt is sustainable and ecologically responsible. The seal hunt in Canada is humane and regulated - don't believe animal rights groups that tell you otherwise, they are just looking to make money from you!

I live in Canada, in the town where idiot stick Pam was hatched and went to school with her hillbilly relatives. We are all sick and tired of her and her ugly ass face. She is just gross and brain dead and thank god she can swing those tits because she can't do much else. She can't act but she can screw, so I guess that's all that matters.

I also spent 2 years living with a family on the East coast 6 years ago and saw the seal hunt in reality.
There are no baby seals killed!!! It has been against the law for some time now. Facts are facts and I have seen the hunting with my own damn eyes.

For all of the misinformed rejects who think that baby seals are being harvested, they should spend some time in Newfoundland and the East Coast of Canada during the seal hunt before they open their big fat lie spewing mouths.

  80. About "Seat of the Soul" says – reply to this

    480

"Some group souls are higher spiritually than others. For example, the soul of dolphins is higher than all other sea creatures. In fact, many spiritual sects believe that a dolphin is the last stage of a soul before becoming reincarnated into a human being. So even in the animal kingdom, there are souls that are more evolved than others.
Every soul, whether human or animal, has a purpose. A dolphin, for example, has as a mission to bring beauty and love to the sea. But what if the soul cannot accomplish its mission or purpose? We have recently seen an increase in dead dolphins washing on beaches. Why is that? According to the author, dolphins are dying because they no longer can accomplish their purpose. It is not a mass suicide, but because dolphins are bringing onto themselves diseases that are killing them. Man is not respecting nature, and is killing the creatures of the sea, such as whales for example, at an alarming rate and for very selfish reasons. In other words, life forms are being massacred for profit! Other sea creatures are dying because of the pollution we are creating. As a result, the sea is no longer a peaceful, beautiful, and pure world, and the dolphins are no longer able to perform their duties as guardians of beauty and serenity to the sea. As a result, their soul has become diseased, and they are dying off." -Badou

I'm sure you people have read the posts about the seals descecrated their natural prey. As in, if they are left alone they will kill all their own food and then the species will die around the Candadian Atlantic provinces because they are not actually naturally suposed to be here, how bout answering to that?

  83. TL says – reply to this

    483

Animals are suffering because of (a) destruction of their habitats and (b) destruction of species due to, usually poor rural people for money and/or food. Let's work for better solutions for all concerned. Or, as in this case, we could always start a collection of monies to try to appeal to the Canadian government to ship some of these poor creatures out to a safe area.

  84. TL says – reply to this

    484

I personally do not condone the killing of any higher creature, but what makes this worse is that it's not so much the indigenous peoples who kill in a humane way for food and economic status, it's a greedy government orchestrating mass killings for blood profits.

  85. TL says – reply to this

    485

Isn't seal hunting supplementary income for fisherman? Please let's find better solutions and provide education and other jobs for these people. This is dehumanizing work.

My God, how can you people say all that terrible stuff about Canada, that they are barbaric? I mean, I love my homeland, America, but seriously, look around New York and then go to Ottawa, it's like walking into the land of OZ. Canada is beautiful, prestine, and while I love America we have A LOT of problems. I think maybe we should let Canada deal with their problems and accept that maybe you don't have all the answers because you don't live here. I mean, when I travel around Europe with an American flag on my rucksack I literally get hissed at :S. My friends who are Canadian where their flags and get drinks bought for them. Canada is one of the most widely regarded places in the world, I think maybe it deserves a little respect.

First off…..it is horrific the way these seals are killed, more like a slaughter!!
And, for those of you that say it is illegal to kill baby seals, watch the videos…..THEY DO KILL THEM!!!
Those of you that are for the seal hunt obviously have no compassion for life, in all forms!
The Seal Hunt should be abolished once and for all and let the fisherman fish instead of killing babies. And for Megan…What an asshole wish! Personally, I would rather see someone hunt you than a baby seal!!!

  95. Robinanne says – reply to this

    495

Maybe the people who think the seal hunt is a good idea should be hunted. There is nothing worse than hunting defenseless animals with no good reason. The money they get from each seal in no way meets the priceless beauty of these animals. Maybe these people do not appreciate life. Karma is a very bad thing…..

  96. Pam Sucks says – reply to this

    496

I think maybe you people should stop doing your research on wikipedia and youtube. The videos that are put out by PETA are propaganda videos, skewed as to further their point. Have you been on an ice flow? have you seen the hunt in progress? Have you read anything factual, and I don't mean the PETA website, I mean like, from WWF sites, or laws dealing with the hunt, things that try to be unbiased. Besides, the people that are for the hunt on this site, for the most part, have presented their cases in a collected and acedemic way, the people who are anti-seal hunt hurl insults and threats. I don't think you are as peace-loving and as good-natured as you think.
