wbbm0214niushooting.jpg

A gunman opened fire at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, killing five people before taking his own life.

This shit makes us so angry!!!!

Why does it seem that kind of stuff happens so much in America but not other parts of the world????

That kind of violence just makes no sense.

Our thoughts with everyone affected by this tragedy.

    Re: Lili
No matter where you are in the world, if you have the money you can whatever you want. Hello! The black market? All you pompous European asses can go on and on about how stupid our laws are. And yes… gun control is in definite need or reform, but I'd sure as hell rather be in America than in France or anywhere else in the world.

This is a horrible event and all of you are coming across as assholes.

To the students at NIU: You're in my thoughts and prayers.

My heart goes out to the families of the victims of this tragedy.

Try amending your constitution and this would reduce the number of children getting killed in your schools. Over 250 years and your 'enlightened' civilization suddenly seem so far behind the majority of other westernized countries. Politicians wont get rid og guns through fear of unpopularity - well this is what happens when your popular then.

It seems like it because it is not reported. I know it happens. Tell that to those Russian school children that were killed in the Beslan school seige. Are you kidding me take away the righ ti bear arms. That is not the problem. If only the solution were that easy.

What a tragedy, another student has died! Leaving the total of deaths to seven! I really do not understand why people do this…their thought process as they plan to kill innocent people. Being an international student, it freaks my parents (from overseas) out to hear these things!
As a Florida International University student, my thoughts and prayers goes out to all of the families! STAY STRONG!!

This stuff DOES happen in other parts of the world, unfortunately. As for the "give back the guns" comments here, grow up. First, if guns were illegal, people would just make their own (saturday night specials anyone?) and do you really think simply making guns illegal is going to make criminals not use them?? Second, millions of people own guns and use them for things such as HUNTING… like my family does. Are you going to take away my right to feed my family now?

don´t compare iraq to the US, iraq is in war becasue of you and the suicide bombers there do it because of religious/cultural brainwash.
and don´t blame the pressure on the individuals, that exists everywhere in the westworld today. but why this is happening in america, over and over again, is becasue the non existing gun control laws.

Are you kidding me? The shooting was an absolute tragedy, but to say that this kind of this only happens in the States? I'm from Canada, and I can assure you it happens other places as well, it's just usually not as publicised. And how is a school shooting more tragic than car bombs and suicide bombers? The States are too wrapped up in themselves to realize that bad things are happening in other parts of the world too.

Something should've been done 15 years ago when the Long Island gunman toted a bag full of guns onto a commuter train killing 5 people and injuring 19!! Nothing was done then and hopefully now America opens their eyeballs and does something about this tragedy. The problem is that this country tends to forget about such horrific events a little too easily. Talk about sweeping shit under the rug !!! wake up lawmakers.

  14. MK says – reply to this

    214

It is easy too get guns here in the U.S. LEGALLY or ILLEGALLY. The laws getting stronger will not stop some insane lunatic who wants to cause chaos. These HORRIFIC events have become more and more frequent b/c these people want MASS attention, which is exactly what they get. They get their name in "lights" for a period of time. As a Journalist who works for a newspaper it is my opinion that we STOP giving them their desire. It is a very sad day when someone feels they have to shoot innocent people to become "known". Honestly, I do not feel any gun control laws will stop that kind of determination. Maybe, just maybe if we stop giving them the attention and giving other potential shooters the idea that they can be famous…. Maybe if someone could stop the manufactures from making these semi-automatic weapons…. Maybe if 1 student had a gun, some of this incredible horror could stop.

Just give up the guns ! Change your constitution ! How can someone be so cruel; taking so many lives !

  16. chicago says – reply to this

    216

It can happen anytime and anywhere. Maybe it happens here in schools because someone does it, becomes infamous, so others follow. However it happens, it sad. What is going on? Why can't we just be compassionate people? We need to look at ourselves as a society to find out what we are doing wrong. If this was a rare occurence, we could distance ourselves, but it happens too often for us all to ignore it. Mental illnes is a problem

    217

I don't know why it seems like that to you. Probably because you're an American who doesn't pay any attention to foreign news. This kind of thing has happened in Scotland, Yemen, Finland and Germany (more than once) to name a few.

  18. Jack says – reply to this

    218

As tragic as is was, do any of you actually think the rest of the world noticed the NIU shooting? Myanmar, Darfur, Rwanda, Liberia, ex-bloc baltic separtist nations, gender oppression, failing economies, and sweatshops. There is so much going on in the world. Innocent people people die by the hundreds and thousands in some these third world warring nations. The US has more laws and restrictions on the obtaining and ownership of firearms than an overwhelming majority of the world. The are nearly 100 million fully automatic AK-47 assualt rifles. Very few of those are found in the United States. No, the US is not perfect. No country or government is. However, we are much better off than most other countries.

  19. Shawn says – reply to this

    219

It's not the guns, it's the people. Society has disintigrated, kids run wild encouraged to "express themselves" and parents aint being parents anymore. people have kids without marriage, kids raise themselves and get more of a "family" vibe from gangs than from family. I am a hunter btw and have guns in my home. Hunting feeds my family. I have a sticker on my car that says "My gun has killed less people than Ted Kennedy's car" and that sums it all up for me. We'll have these issues until morals and values return to the USA.

Sad :-( I live in sweden where several schools had warnings from their fellow students that some day they will take popas gun and shoot them all. So much for violence in Amercia only /HR

Because your country doesn't seem to understand that 'the right to bear arms' is an outdated and obviously flawed concept. No access to guns - no mass shootings..well much, much less as there's always a black market. In Oz, we have shootings but they are rare as the public so not have free access to guns! Guns are ILLEGAL here unless you are a farmer or a cop. If I'd had access to guns when I was in high school I would have shot the place up too.

I think it's a combination of no gun control and absolutely horrible mental health care in our country. As a former NIU student, someone who has friends who are students there and someone who lives just 30min from DeKalb, this makes me sick and fearful of the future for my daughter. It's so disgusting that people can't even get an education now without being fearful of being shot or killed.

First big school shooting I remember was in Canada and there have been several since in Canada. And there was another at a Scottish primary school. Maybe Americans just don't notice when it happens in other countries:

The Dawson College shooting occurred on September 13, 2006 at Dawson College, a CEGEP in Westmount near downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The perpetrator, Kimveer Gill, began shooting outside the de Maisonneuve Boulevard entrance to the school, and moved towards the atrium by the cafeteria on the main floor.[1][2] One victim died at the scene, while another 19 were injured, eight of whom were listed in critical condition with six requiring surgery.[3][4][5] The shooter later committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, after being shot in the arm by police.[6]

No in other parts of the world they use machetes and other horrible means to kill people. Do you people not understand that crazies and criminals get their gun illegally usually and if we take guns off of law abiding citizens than only the criminals and crazies have them….go cry to Rosie about your gun control. And don't hide behind the person trying to protect themself with a gun when you dont have one… And no one care enough about anything in Canada. All that is up there are the cowards who fled to avoid the revolution and every other war we had to fight to keep our freedoms…pacifist pussie

Re: Timothy C – Yeah. We all know guns are the only way to kill people. Furthermore, please explain to me why it has also happened in countries in which guns control is stricter?

According to one German article, only .004 percent of gun crimes in that country are perpetrated with legally obtained weapons. I suspect the situation is probably little different here.

Also, #1. "Right to BARE arms?" Indeed. We have the right to tank tops, but I'm not sure what this has to do with guns. Dunce.

This is a very tragic time for everyone!

Re: Leah – you mean american medias show only news from the states? such tragedies are way too important not to show them wherever you're in the world.
i know that u.s.a. is a huge country so the possibility for such a tragedy and crimes level overall is a lot bigger but i can not think even of a single case in my country when somebody went to a mall/out in streets/a university and shot/stabbed etc. 5-6 people… and in the states is happening every week.
people are right - it's due to gun control laws (or no such) and repressed people who go crazy.
and stop quoting iraq because you killed tens and hundreds of thousands innocent people there. have some shame.

According to Wikipedia under "School Shootings" there have been about 40 in the US since 1966. About 8 in Canada and about 12 elsewhere in the World. Again, I think Americans just don't notice when it happens elsewhere and I suspect Witipedia has missed a few in other countries. We barely notice when it happens here, who knew there were 40?

I think these university shootings are very tragic, but the reason it happens alot in America and not as much elsewhere is because guns are legal in America. Having said, that im not suggesting it wouldnt happen if guns where illegal but it would make it much harder to get hold of guns.

Re: AMA – Unfortunately, Ama, that is not true. If you see the movie Bowling for Columbine, it is evident that Canada has much less strict gun control — as well as more people with guns per capita. I wish there were an easy answer such as yours, but it remains mind boggling. I think "the right to bear arms" and the "pursuit of happiness" are so deeply ingrained in us, that the less sane people think they have a right to combine the two and take people's lives when they get pissed off and unhappy. It is the extreme expression of selfishness.

perez- I can't believe you said something so stupid. This kind of stuff only happens in America? Are you retarded?
I will admit that it is extremely sad and I don't understand how someone could do this or why it keeps happening so much, but to say that it doesn't happen in other parts of the world is just ludacris. Turn on the news and watch the islamic nut jobs blowing up schools and churches just for the hell of it. Look at the people still being slaughtered in Darfur and Tibet. All in the name of religion.
Look at the ghettos all across this country where people are shot down in the street so often it is not even deemed newsworthy anymore. When it happens in black schools and neighborhoods, we look the other way because we figure thats just the way it is, but when it is a white kid, it's a tragedy.

    FACTS

    1. Guns do kill people - they were designed to kill not to injure but to kill.

    2. Hunting to feed your family went out when you slaughtered the majority of the native indians in theis country.

    3. If guns were less available it would be a lot hartder for people to get there hands on them at a moments notice.

    4. The family of this murdering student should pay for his crimes.

    5. Americans can't see the wood for the trees guns+crazy students=murder

Every family that owns a gun and does not keep it locked away should feel responsible for the murder of these students. Guns do not protect people, laws do.

And yes America you do have the highest rate of student murders by other students, yes you have the highest rate of gun ownership than any other country, yes your children are so used to getting what ever they want they feel it is there right to 'act out' when they do not get what they want.

Wake up and smell the blood you over indulged, pampered, snotty nosed idiots - guns kill, this makes guns bad.

I'm not saying that other nations are perfect but the statistics prove that what i'm saying is right. You arm your citizens and your children will be killed - whats is it going to take to get this through your heads.

because you have stupid laws that allow guns for almost everybody. if everybody has a gun it doesn't make it any safer. shoot each other because both of you have guns? whatever happened to talking, forgiveness, and love?

It's because all of our jobs are in other countries. The kid graduated and probably couldn't get a job.

Maybe its because you can get guns at the same place you buy your pants and snacks, paranoia and the influence that media has on society are just two of the many reasons for the violence in America. Personally I think that everyone here should watch 'Bowling for Columbine', and if you are still for the right to bare arms then may god have mercy on your soul.

Sorry, but Perez is right, this situation of an angry student going into a campus and killing a bunch of people after planing it for months as the final highlight of his life, is exclusive to america. There are other forms of violence in the rest of the world, but the other examples people are suggesting always have political reasons behind. This kind of situation is exclusive to america, the question is why?

long live the great state of illinois! my thoughts go out to the families and friends of the victims. citizens of illionis - indeed, the United States as a whole - let's unite against hate! there is no reason for horrendous events such as this and the attack on Virginia Tech to be happening! chicagoans and illinois residents - come together against violence and let's reduce the accessibilty of deadly weapons in our great state!

Like you even know where this school is, Perez. Stop faking like you care for people to get publicity.

It's people, not guns that kill, and the laws definitely need to be more strict regarding gun possession. This is not isolated to America - it happens all over the world. People just love to hate America so it gets more press. You want to do something that matters? Pray for the family. Help if you live near. Stop gasping at the pictures and take action about it.

Why does it happen so much in America, you ask? Because Americans are haters and thinks the world revolves around them and that they have every right to treat people like shit. Americans are idiots, gun-loving assholes. THAT'S why it happens so much in America. When are you guys going to get it through your thick peanut-sized skulls? YOU ARE WHAT MAKES THE WORLD HATE EACH OTHER!!! YOU ARE THE ONE AND ONLY REASON WHY THE WORLD IS AT WAR AND WHY PEOPLE ARE KILLING EACH OTHER EVERYDAY. Don't you get it?!??!?!? WHEN WILL YOU GET IT?!

American kids are little cunts. Instead a proper fist fight (there is no real harm in a bloody nose or busted lip) like in every country in Europe, kids have easy access to guns, and take the easy way out.

But keep voting for the elite that doesn't give a shit about you, and you will have many more school shootings.

I'm fairly sure your ridiculous gun laws have something to do with the prevalence of such violence in America.

  99. megan says – reply to this

    299

While I agree that the gun control laws are severely lacking, so is our understanding of the individuals who are the future mass killers. They are loners who feel forgotten. What they seek is notoriety and, without fail, the media gives them that. These are important stories to be covered, but the less personal attention we give the "shooter," the less he/she has succeeded and the lower the probability that someone will try to emulate them.

    Dear Perez,

First I would like to thank you for addressing our situation. Second, thank you to your readers for all your support. However, at this time, I feel that right now we need to grieve our loss. Right now, we don't care about a gun control debate. We care about mourning the loss of part of our NIU family. In reaction to all the comments, I also don't think this is as much of a gun control debate as it is a mental health debate. People are also asking why there weren't metal detectors. On this campus, people are in a rush to get to and from class. Metal detectors would make it near impossible to make our classes on time, especially if you have walk the mile from one end of campus to the other. I also think that some of your readers are really insensitive - especially those who try to be "first" on such a serious issue as this.

    Sincerely,
    Megan
    NIU Senior
