wbbm0214niushooting.jpg

A gunman opened fire at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, killing five people before taking his own life.

This shit makes us so angry!!!!

Why does it seem that kind of stuff happens so much in America but not other parts of the world????

That kind of violence just makes no sense.

Our thoughts with everyone affected by this tragedy.

I think that this is such a tragedy. I live in O'Fallon, Illinois which is 20 minutes outside St. Louis. This has hurt everyone everywhere. This is very sad. Watching the story on all of the news channels and seeing all of the hurt parents just is depressing. I think that America needs to do something about all of these school shootings, that kill many innocent students.

Doesn't happen in other parts of the world? Are you kidding? There are plenty of other countries that would love our tragedies on a per capita basis, as they have to worry about suicide bombers and gunmen every day on the way to work or at the mall. We're a large country with a lot of people and people forget that.

That being said, as a college graduate, my heart goes out to the students and family of NIU. My college days were the best of my life filled with great memories, great friends and a feeling of security like no other. I couldn't imagine that being taken away.

I LIVE 15 MINUTES FROM NIU… U ALWAYS THINK THAT THIS COULD NEVER HAPPEN SO CLOSE TO HOME…ITS SHOCKING FOR ALL OF US AND MY SINCERE THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILIES AND STUDENTS. THIS JUST GOES TO SHOW TO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONES FOR GRANTED. OUR DAYS ARE NEVER PROMISED.

agreed 100%. I don't understand…if you hate yourself so much to want to take your own life, then for god's sake don't go out to kill innocent, normal, SANE people you don't effin know. ughhhh pisses me off!!!

my prayers and thoughts with all those involved in this tragedy.

stupid kids. really? are you so jaded when you get to college that the only thrill is to kill a few people? despite the most clever gun laws guys, people will still get guns illegally (duh) and that's a huge problem. i was once robbed at gunpoint by a kid that couldn't have been more than 14. i wonder hwere he got that? regardless, it's a horrible event and my thoughts lay with the family and friends.

Everytime I read about these kind of situations my heart stops. Thats because WE had this kind of tragedy in FINLAND like 6 months ago (google Jokela school shooting). And Finland is such a small country, it was the first time this kind of school shooting ever happened here. It destroyed our idea of our country.

The student shot 8 people and then himself.

it is all because of the right to possess guns. You love to believe that u r so free in America because u r allowed to have guns but…All in all ur freedoms are resricted much more than in any other parts of the world. Give up the guns for your own good and your freedom won;t be affected.

This is so sad. My heart goes out to the families that have endured this tragic loss of life. I think that we need to re-haul all of our gun control laws. It is far too easy and I don't believe this to be the case in many other countries. I am from NY and I can remember many an occasion that a student was caught with a gun in school. I can think of three in the two years that I attended a school in Manhattan. Unfortunate but a lot of youth out there place no value on life or that of others and overall lack respect for their elders. I for one am in my late twenties, but there is such a vast rift between the way I was brought up and teenagers now. Parents need to be more involved in their child's life and I feel that this would help, not solve but help a great deal.

    515

NIU is 20 mins from my house and I have many friends who go there. The actual count of fatalities is now 7. Let's not make this an attack on the gov. and poor gun control laws. We need to focus on the families of the the victims and everyone who was apart of the tragic situation. There have been way too many shootings on school campuses not just colleges happening more and more. You never know when something like this is going to happen. Keep the families and friends in your thoughts and prayers and pray for the recovery of those that are fighting for their lives in the hospital. Be sure to tell your family and friends you love them whenever you get the chance for you never know when it will be the last time you get to.

people sometimes ask me why there are so few shooting deaths in England.

Hmm… perhaps it's the lack of guns.

  17. clm says – reply to this

    517

Is it that people are less disturbed in other countries? I don't think so! It is because people who are disturbed in America have easy access to a weapon that makes them feel like they have control over situations where maybe they never felt they had control. I just finished watching Crash for the second time, and it was just so alarming how easy it was for the storekeeper to buy that gun, but it was also alarming how easily people used their guns without thinking first - it was the only answer to their problems.
Of course bullying and media coverage plays a part as well, but the bottom line is that it would be a lot harder for a person to massacre a large group of people without guns.
Keep the guns out of public hands - there is absolutley no reason for the public to have guns.

  30. Anu says – reply to this

    530

Well, this is just a joke, right? You, Americans know all about ONLY your country. Of course you don't know what's going on here, in Europe, in Asia. Just a few months ago in Finland a schoolboy killed many of his co-students including himself.. now, a kindergarten is held hostage with kids by a crazy man with guns and explosions… i bet you didn't knew about that. And maybe, if you, Americans could just look at yourself like others do, maybe you'd understand that you all are just soooo self-centered and thinking always about yourselves. It's absolutely rude of you, Perez, to say "Why does it seem that kind of stuff happens so much in America but not other parts of the world????", because if you would see more than just your "perfect" America, then you'd know, that these kind of bad things are going on all over the world!!!! But nooo.. and maybe if your country would just care more about it's people and maybe if they'd do more to prevent the crimes and control illegal gun and drug smuggling, then maybe your country would be better and would be a place, "where everybody wants to get in", just like Megan said.

Honestly, this is making me SO ANGRY, and Megan, you really need to learn more about the World, trust me, America's not the best country, and without America, the America, that exists now, I think the world would be a MUCH BETTER place. If you think about it, why is the war going on in Iraq? Because Americans are the world's biggest consumers, the world's biggest environment destroyers, the world's biggest nation, that is so dumb, that they only see, what they want to see and believe, what they want to believe, because if it weren't for you, Americans, we'd have more natural resources, more fresh water and less crimes, smuggling and other kind of criminal cases! You're DEFINITELY NOT THE BEST people in the world, NOT the best country in the world, in fact many other countries and many other nations think, that you, Americans, are the cause of the many bad things going on.

  35. clm says – reply to this

    535

'Just some Guy' you are exactly what is wrong with this country. Your solution is to give more people guns to stop gun violence instead of trying to use gun control to stop maniacs from getting guns. Using your logic you would have to have these trained private citizens in every classroom of every school in the country just in case things like this happen - seems like a big waste of money to me. Doesn't it make more sense to try to prevent everyone from having guns?
Just watch Crash and see how allowing private citizens to have guns can escalate to situations that may not have been the original intention for the gun, but nonetheless get out of control.
When you teach people that violence is the best solution to their problems, then they will only turn to violence. If America is serious about solving these problems then they would think about that, but sadly I really don't think the government cares about solving this problem. They are content to just have the president issue a statement of condolence everytime it happens.

My heart aches for the victims and their loved ones.

The US gov't has long used fear based tactics in order to gain support for fascist dictatorship, as well as to instigate and gain support for war. These horrible murders need to stop and won't unless American's truly see these things for what they are. These are PLANNED ATTACKS. Taking citizen's guns away and CHANGING THE CONSTITUTION, NOT SOME LITTLE LAW won't change this. Had any other weapon been used no one would even think to comment. Your being made to feel fear everywhere you go, work, school, church, shopping malls, forest adventures, family vacations. Then through 'reality' tv, you're being conditioned to the idea of being 'watched' in your home. There have been wars and riots in the streets elsewhere over the same gov't strong arm tactics the US is using. Look up Project Paperclip ( US gov't brought NAZI'S over to aid forming mind control techniques and the OSS, known later as the CIA), Gulf of Tonkin incident ( US attacks on it's OWN ship, the USS LIBERTY, in order to join the Vietnam invasion on August 2 and 4th, 1964), and for those who don't care about history, 9/11. We are being conditioned and geared up for martial law. You are supposed to say the logical solution to these attacks would be to take the guns from everyone but then who's left with the weapons? Military and black market traders. Yanking RIGHTS away and changing the constitution won't make these horrible murders stop.

It was horrifying to turn on the TV and see that there was a shooting in a classroom I go to every day of the week. If students were allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus, how many people could have been kept from being shot? A lot! Look up the statistics about conceal carry. 2 million gun crimes a year are prevented by people who carry concealed firearms. THAT IS FACT! The problem IS gun control. Britain has banned firearms, and the BBC just printed statistics that show that gun crime has risen 30% since the ban. Why? Because criminals there know people don't have a firearm to fight back with.

    Re: Val
Unfortunately these people tend to hide their problems from friends (if they have any) and loved ones until it is too late. How many times have you heard family members say, after the fact, that they didn't see any signs or that they didn't realize things were this bad. Do you also think that the families of the shooters at Columbine couldn't afford health care? I highly doubt that.
I agree that everybody should be able to get the health care that they need, but i think it is too simplistic to say that medicating people will solve these problems. What if they are hiding their problems or they don't take their meds? I don't think that gun control will stop everything - despite all our efforts in Canada these things still happen and people still get guns (albeit mostly illegal ones that come from the USA), however as a private citizen in Canada with no criminal connections I would have no idea how to get a gun.
Nothing is 100% fool proof but I really think that if you make it harder for people to get guns then these tragedies will happen less.

We had 2 people shot and killed on Christmas/boxing day. It's sad, but i don't think there is much that can be done to stop this. My heart goes out to all those effected by this tragedy.

WOW, its not the guns folks, DUH!~ any one watch bowling for columbine? other countries have access to guns like us, such as Canada, whats the diff? they have a single payer health care system, we need a single payer plan, taking away the overhead on healthcare would leave 40% of the existing funds to pay for all those uninsured. Single payer people, don't fall for the Universal plans these dems are toting it is just a cover for the insurance companies to have a blank check.
We need free mental health care, for everyone, it would cheaper than what we have now, it would be cheaper than jail, the war on drunks and trying to fix the homeless problem………. DEMAND IT!~ check out Ralph Naders website…..

what a ridiculous comment to make about bad things happening here and not in other parts of the world. that's why a horrible tragedy such as this makes the news-because it doesn't happen all the time. can we please give the NIU community the respect and prayers they so need and deserve at this time, and just keep the politics out of it? i'm sure that is the last thing on the minds of the families and friends of victims at this time, and the last thing they need to be in the middle of right now.

Most probably because you guys have easy gun access and its pretty difficult for any young person to be allowed access to firearms over here in the UK! Plus your nation is so pilled up on prozac and other things! You yanks are all about emotions, learn to contain yourselves! :P

p.s America is one of the most powerful countries in the world, like the media is owned by big corporate elites who can have their tv shows/news accessed in other countries…So when these things happen in other countries it is not as wide-spread in the news…does that make sense?! Big love Perez.

As a NIU student and loyal Perez reader, I'd like to thank Perez and everyone for the support and prayers sent. Things are crazy as of now, but I just hope that people can stop arguing and and think about those who were injured and lost their lives. This is something that 25,000+ people will live with for the rest of their lives, much like those at other schools that have been victims, all over the world.

the whole idea that this only happens in america and nowhere else is just such a ridiculous and inappropriate comment to make, particularly at this time. the reason this horrific tragedy made the news is because it is so unusual and terrible. so can we please keep the politics out of this and give the NIU community the respect, support, and prayers they so deserve and need at this time? i'm sure that is the last thing on the minds of the family and friends of the victims at this time, and that is the very last thing they should be in the middle of right now.

This stuff DOES happen all over the world.. look at the middle east. suicide bombers, random shootings… Look at Africa, isn't there a war there as well? I'm not sure why there seems to be a "shoot up the school" trend in America but something needs to be done. We may be fighting a war on foreign soil but we need to also focus on what is happening on U.S. grounds.

just in responce to the person named "idiots" who responded to my previous comment on how american needs to protect its people for the threats within its own country (i.e gun men) rather than constantly being focused on pointing the finger abroad.

How is a suicide bomber any worse than a gun man who open fires on people, then kills himself? In my opinion he is no better than a suicide bomber. Sometimes you should take note one whats happening in your own back yard instead of being focused on what your neighbours are up to.

Gun control (which I support) is only part of this issue. The real issue is that there is too little that can be done about an adult who is DANGEROUSLY MENTALLY ILL. Whoever this shooter is - I am sure its the same basic story as all the other times tragedies like this has happened . This guy is obviously not well & the steps that should have been taken to prevent him from hurting others simply didn't/couldn't happen in time. Look at how much trouble Britney's family has had to go to in order to prevent her from harming herself - and they have lots of $$, connections and can afford to devote themselves full-time to trying to help her. Not everyone's family can or will do that.

I think the real issue is that there needs to be some major reform of how mentally ill adults are helped in the US. Its WAY too hard to help them & as a result we just absorb the shock of tragedy after tragedy.

Re: USA – We are not saying our countries are better than yours… Our western countries have problems aswell but we do seem to have a bit more of a grasp on arms controll. Yes shoutings happen in other western countries but no where near as many as the USA.

Fuck your fat ignorant ass, Perez, for feeding bullshit into the machine that is the American media. You're a disgusting person, and the fact that you're making money through the millions of visitors who will click on those pictures and read that story is even more loathesome. Is this not a celebrity gossip site? Since when did people losing their lives become gossip? It's no more than a juicy headline that'll help you get a little more money while desperate people surf your page, clinging to the lives of other more "important" people. To the people who frequent this sad, sad website, please pick up a book, pick up a credible newspaper and actually learn something.

Perez, you are the biggest idiot!!! Worse shit than this happens all over the world. Look at Darfur, Israel, Pakistan, Somolia, Tibet etc..etc.. This kind of violence makes no sense either. People kill, rape, mutilate and torture old people, women, and children in every country. Being mad is okay but don't act like this kind of 'senseless violence' only goes on in the U.S.
