wbbm0214niushooting.jpg

A gunman opened fire at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, killing five people before taking his own life.

This shit makes us so angry!!!!

Why does it seem that kind of stuff happens so much in America but not other parts of the world????

That kind of violence just makes no sense.

Our thoughts with everyone affected by this tragedy.

"Why does it seem that kind of stuff happens so much in America but not other parts of the world????"
Yes school shootings are horrible, but there are worse things in the world that DON'T affect the US - genicide, civil war, coups.. Life isn't that bad for you guys.

  2. Jil says – reply to this

    602

Yea good point. Nothing bad like suicide bombings happen in other countries…

America may suck, but at least we don't have war on our soil. Unless you consider these dumbfuck kids with guns in school war-like..

People are fuckin' stupid. Colleges are institutions that don't give a shit about their students only their wallets and people die because of it.

We shouldn't question "why us?" We should be saying "why anyone?"

Perez, you are a closed-minded douchebag. America is the only place this happens?!?!?!?!? Hello, nation-centric thinking. The only reason it's notable is because it's NOT the norm here. Try other countries where there are mass genocides going on, or where suicide bombers run free, etc. You should think before you type.

    Re: Pissed off
Your argument would make sense IF the people that shoot up schools were criminals beforehand! Typically though they aren't, which is why it is so damn easy for them to get guns.
Enjoy your 'freedom' moron - you gotta be prepared to fight off those red coats with yur right to bare arms y'all!

Can you say gun control. Make it more difficult for people to buy guns!!! What are Clinton, Obama or McCain saying about the NRA.

  7. dotoressa says – reply to this

    607

I absolutely agree guns should not be available that easily, but: They are not the reason! In my country, Switzerland, military is mandatory for all men, and after they all take the guns home and store them under the bed or wherever, so the number of firearms is much higher in my country than in the U.S., but did anything like that ever happen? NO!
It`s not the guns, it`s the culture (or lack of)

Re: mmm – Excuse, but NO not Anyone can go and buy a gun in America. You have to pass a background check in order to purchase a gun, and people charged with prior felonies are FORBIDDEN to own or even have a gun on their property, and that includes rifles and shotguns. I should know, my father, who has been a lifelong hunter, has been in prison for 8 YEARS SO FAR for having his wife's hunting rifles in their home, which he never even used because it's illegal for him to purchase hunting permits. His prior felony conviction occurred over 20 years ago! If he's lucky, he'll be out in a little over a year. (To clarify, he was a lifelong hunter until his felony conviction. He did not hunt after it became illegal for him to do so.) We do have gun control laws in effect in America, so the rest of the world can get off it's high horse! I'm proud to be an American and feel a hell of alot safer (and freer) here than I would in 99% of the other countries on this planet.

  24. hotred says – reply to this

    624

partially because we have more freedoms and a less structured society. where there is chaos there is freedom. partially because worldwide there is a move toward a looser family structure and people feel more isolated. while i don't oppose gun control, most households in america have had guns for centuries, but these kind of things did not happen until our societal structure became looser and more fragmented with a lack of community and parenting.
similar things are happening in other countries, but given the size of our country the ratio is bound to be more. i hold an EU passport and have lived overseas (not as wonderful as american's fantasize) and understand we are the size for 4 europes.

    627

I'm sure this stuff does happen in places other than America, but American news is so preoccupied with itself and with ratings that it doesn't bother to talk about other incidents like this in the world. Or maybe it's because America preaches about this supposed "American Dream" this is not nearly as easy to acheive as its media claims and portrays, and it makes people crazy and bitter to the point that they go on a rampage. Or maybe it's because America allows people to have weapons for "self defense". Hasn't the government seen enough proof that weapons are barely ever used for self defense? Or maybe it's all of the above, and America is just not as safe, free, prosperous or true as it likes to think it is. America lives in a bubble and will readily blame these kinds of things on individual issues without even considering for a second that maybe it's the corrupt institutions that make people lash out like this. I'm not at all saying he was right to do this, but I really think that the country needs to see major changes before things like this will stop.

This happens in America so much because Americans promote violence, war and evil. They may not think that, but they do. America needs an attitude makeover. Hopefull with a new president in office, their points of view wil be altered and the brain wash will wear off.

Re: expat – Lives are so devalued by kids these days because their parents are more preoccupied with work and making money than raising mentally healthy and happy children. Parents sit them down in front of tv and video games and computers rather than spending quality time and instilling proper values and morals, such as how it's wrong to go on a shooting rampage, or stab someone for looking at you wrong. They feel and unloved and so they transfer this hate for themselves onto others.

No, the guy would have been tackled and pummeled to death. I don't think gun control is the issue here. When does stuff like this happen in states that allow guns like crazy like Texas? Almost never. You can't just blame one sole thing on this. The guns aren't the problems. It's the people who have the guns. It's a total tragedy and this was something that I could actually see happening in my geology class happening. The whole way it was set up it sounds exactly like the auditorium I was in for Natural Disasters. What happened is horrible. All my thoughts go out to the NIU students!!

Re: Jil – you really believe suicide bombings don't happen in other countries? that's so sad that american kids are so uneducated and deluded about the rest of the world, they think america is a mess. there have been numerous suicide bombings and terrorists attacks in the uk, spain, netherlands, france, isreal, africa, argentina, bosnia, georgia, etc. there are also other kinds of terrorism in other countries that would be more impossible here such as the exile and extermination of entire races or groups of people by muslim extremists or sympathetic terrorist cells. jews have been exiled from france (little jewish children have ben knifed or beaten in public view by muslims), kurds have been exterminated by hussein and russia, the communist chinese have massacred the tibetans, isreali school children have been bombed EVERY SINGLE DAY since giving gaza to the palestinians, and need i tell you whats happening in the sudan and darfur.

americans think the rest of the world is like their disneyland vision of it because they like to pout about how bad their country is. america has got it good, but because youhaven't paid attention to how bad the rest of the world is you won't have it good very soon. compared to the rest of the world america is relatively peaceful and most americans simply take that for granted.

And besides, people immigrate because they are told lies about what they are to expect, such as wealth, health and success, when in reality they will just end up adding more to the poverty-level population (that goes for both Canada and the States).

    661

Perez, it does happen in other places. We have it in Canada too, not on the same scale. But as a witness of the Dawson School shooting, where we lost one life that day, I think it is more of a global problem than just a U.S. problem. There is more to this than just gun control, this is an epidemic and the root of the problem lies with the gunmen themselves. Our society is failing these individuals and I don't know what needs to be done.

You can find a gun anywhere in the world, it doesn't matter if they are legal or not in your country. I live in Argentina and if I wanted to find a gun I could easily, but we don't have problems such as school shooting here at all. I think this is a very interesting subject to analyze and am happy that you have pointed it out Perez so that people can think about this a bit. It's hard to find a clear reason as to why this happens in the States and not in other countries, but it's smart that people are starting to reflect upon the issue and work on improving the society and cultures morals and priorities.

I just dont think gun control is the reason. it's true what people say, guns dont kill people, people kill people.

something is wrong with our youth in this country. we need to ask why is this happening and how can we prevent it. without or without stiffer gun laws, if you have the drive and will to commit an act like this, you will find a way. we need to prevent people from getting to this point. something is wrong with americans as a whole, not our gun laws.

GO AMERICA! maybe we interfere, but we can't turn away when we see injustice like RACIST europe can.

I think next, America should bomb the shit out of Canada. Sounds like they're a threat, being north of us and all, they don't like us, and they think we're a power hungry nation of imbeciles running naked through the streets waving guns around, begging for medical care. I'm sick to death of Canada. Yep, I'm gonna get together a band of my Southern, right wing, NASCAR watching, red-neck hick brothers, go to D.C. and grab Prez. Bush, march into Canada, and lay waste to their homeland. Fuck off Canadians, I'm officially sick of your stupid tirades about how shitty America is. No one cares about Canada anyhow.

I agree that America does provide very easy access to guns, and that these campus tragedies are horrible, but let's not trivialize or forget to recognize the lives of the millions of people that are dying all over the world as a result of senseless violence. From the genocide in Darfur, civil strife in Sierra Leone, Somalia, Laos, and Kenya, the war in Iraq, immigration riots in Western Europe, and countless other senseless murders around the world, we can not say that this is only happening in America. The only difference is that here, in the US, the media covers these incidents on our own soil endlessly, while they do not provide adequate media coverage to the millions of other countless human rights violations that occur everyday in other parts of the world. You can say this happens in America, but you can't say that senseless violence doesn't happen in every country for some idiotic reason or another, even Canada.

first of all, we don't have much people who sell under the table guns, if someone doesn't get the license to own a gun, they won't be permitted to buy one. Second as soon as they walk out that store with dissapointment, there comes a stupid cock sucker that offers a 9mm for 1000 cash..takes it and runs. FUCKING AMERICA SELLS OVER THE COUNTER BULLETS AT FUCKING WALMART, a family fucking store. There…now there is your answer, if Canadians want bullets..it's a fucking mission and a half.

    675

america has gun control laws. the problem is that we also don't have borders, so people can access and buy guns through the smuggling from mexico and canada. this is the same way illegal immigrants come here. many are told to get safe passage they must bring drugs or guns. since we have no borders "gung control" laws are meaningless except to those who abide the laws.

cause US is one country where u can just stroll into arms store n legally purchase firearms. with or without permit, IMO if u eliminate ownership of guns altogether it will be a much safer place. so much for freedom of speech, blah blah, whatever it is u guys practice over there.

Don't blame it on gun control, blame it on poor parenting. High school is hard, for every one. Every person has gone through that phase. I did, there was always a gun in the house for protection, I've always known where it was, and I never picked it up and took it to school to blow people away with. Seriously, I think we should do mental screenings in school.

Listen, just take one second and listen up
Pay attention to these little children acting tough
Taking daddies gun to school to shoot them up
One day the quiet kid has had enough
And he just writes down and lists and then
Shakes his head and decides it won’t happen again
He’s sick of being bullied, tired of being lonely
He’s got a list that goes five miles long
And he wishes he could only
Punish all of those who have wronged
This is an attention cry, he was just acting shy
So you would pass him by, and we still don’t know why
How do you know you’ll be safe tomorrow
Guns and bombs, the world has so much sorrow
And the media feeds and waits for this
Call it breaking news while filming a girls in fits
And they’re pumping it out back unto our kids
Whose little eyes should never witness this
You’re giving him what he wanted
    We’re in panic and disarray
And every time you change the channel
all you hear is his name
Every one knows who he is now
    Invisible no more
You’re afraid that the evil is outside your door
No matter what you do you can’t be prepared
So analyze it to death, he won we’re scared.

We need gun control. We need better mental health services. We need to minimalize the gap in the distribution of wealth in this country. We need our media to stop focusing so much on tragedy and more on triumph. We need to stop watching E news and start watching CNN . We need better educate ourselves on world wide issues. We need to make amends and work toward fixing our tarnished name. We need to stop arguing about gay marriage and start arguing about important issues. We need to stop watching the grammys and start watching the presidential debates. We need to vote. All Americans have a voice whether they think they do or not. Even those not of voting age are allowed to volunteer for political causes. Wake up America, or we've got an even scarier road ahead of us.

MEDIA!! funny how you hear of these things happening in the U.S and such all because of the media attention it draws. I know I am not from America, I am from Canada and I am a Native Canadian. The thing that bothers me about this is when in Red Lake, the shooting on the reservation didnt attract attention as the other schools do. Not only this the fuckin president didnt even show up to show his support on these matters HE MADE A FUCKIN PHONE CALL!…it just shows that this isnt only happening in America but in all other countries to. It just bothers the hell outta me that this thing has pleagued the youth of today to think this is the way to go about things. The Red Lake massacre was a very upsetting thing that happened to my people, to me it just seemed like because they were Native American's the people didnt care as much.

For the rest of you fucktards blaming the US for its poor gun control…how about a little compassion for the families instead of focusing on what the country has done wrong.

I am an NIU student and I thank those of you for your thoughts. However, some of you who criticize America or this part of America should take a moment to think how you would feel if something like this happened to you. I was not near that building but was in a lockdown situation in another building on campus. This has been the most horrfiying experience of my life and I would not wish this on anyone. You may think that gun control will help violence in this country and it very well might. But will it wont stop bad things from happening all together? I don't think so. Something like this could happen anytime anywhere and for any reason. And when something like this does happen the last things the victims want to see are the opinions of people who were not even there.

I ask that in this time instead of criticizing and speculating to please jus keep NIU students and families in your hearts and prayers. I love my Huskies and refuse to let the acts of one person to ruin my experience or the education that I and my fellow students are still working very hard to achieve
