A gunman opened fire at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, killing five people before taking his own life.
This shit makes us so angry!!!!
Why does it seem that kind of stuff happens so much in America but not other parts of the world????
That kind of violence just makes no sense.
Our thoughts with everyone affected by this tragedy.

if a person really has an intent to kill, they'll use any weapon they can get!
so gun control has NOTHING to do with it.
there are countries with very low gun control laws, and they have some of the smallest rates of gun crime, because what criminal is gonna try and threaten a civilian with a gun if there is a huge chance that person may have a gun concealed for their own protection?
criminals will get guns no matter how strict the laws are. which means only the innocent people will be unprotected.
the fact that you are so ignorant to think that this kind of violence happens only in america is ridiculous. your blog reaches far and wide. you should take that opportunity that is privy to you that so few have to actually make intelligent, well researched commentary.
As an NIU student, I can honestly say this wasn't a huge surprise…In Dec. there were writings on the bathroom wall, though this most likely had nothing to do with this situation. He had graduated NIU and was a grad student at the U of I, so he most likely did not write the threats on the wall. This is so hard to believe…The rest of the NIU students, faculty and staff will be in my prayers.

Actually it happened in Germany and it was way worse than Columbine. Also in Russia. It's just that you weren't blogging back then, and also, America has a hard time reporting international news like that unless it's a terrorist bombing. But I believe those incidents did make the headlines.

If the campus was not a "gun free zone" someone with a gun of their own could have ended the attack before he killed so many.
If students and teachers were armed he would have never had the guts to enter that classroom.

it has to do with the attitude of most parents, they let there kids watch movies including violence, but any talk of sex and there covering there childs ears. this send the message that violence is ok but sex is not which is totally twisted. how many times in your life have you shot someone? hopefully never, but sex, everyone has sex. sex is an expression of love while war and violence is an expression of hate. this idea that sex is wrong or something creates a creepy atmosphere. parents are too embarrassed to talk to their children about sex WTF? most american women haven't even seen their own vaginas, and im sure many of them have never masturbated thus never had an orgasm. sex creates life, war kills that life. it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that war, violence and guns are dirty not sex! and as for guns cummon any idiot can see that it KILLING SHOULD NEVER BE AS EASY AS PULLING A TRIGGER!

As a current student at NIU, I'd like to say thank you to everyone for their kind words, thoughts and prayers. Everyone here on campus is trying to cope with the horrific things that happened yesterday. Please keep the victims and their families in your thoughts!

i think that school is also to blame not only does it result in children who are constantly stressed and bullied. Things like this make me sick to my stomach. Young people need to think through their actions before hurting so many other people inaddition to themselves. I am confident, however, that much like the tragic Virginia Tech shootings almost a year ago, that our nation will join together and help the college. Hopefully this tragedy will make our government look at ways to up the gun control.

Guns are legal in Canada, we just have more restrictions. Americans have the right to carry a concealed weapon, where as in Canada, we have to keep our guns locked up, with special safety devices on them, and separetly from the ammunition. I know people that own hand guns, the same ones used in the shooting. I don't know if gun control has anything to do with these shootings; this guy bought his guns legallly. There are more steps to being able to own a gun in Canada. It's a lengthier process but it's still possible.

Actually, it does happen in other places, we just don't hear about it…for example, friends and family of Columbine victims traveled to Erfurt, Germany, to offer support after a school shooting that occurred there. In addition, violence is worldwide, it just comes in different forms. Because America isn't war-torn and impoverished, violence just happens in different settings. Although all those fucking guns you have over there probably doesn't hurt.

excuse me? have you forgotten about the tragic events in darfur? or afghanistan? or in kenya? other parts of south africa? did you even hear about the shooting in finland where several people were killed? and even south america? there are millions of people who go through this kind of violence almost every day! maybe it's not in a university, but there's violence in their homes, bombs in their nighborhood, child soldiers taken out of schools and away from their families so that more violence and corruption can me distributed throughout the world.

After the initial shock of yesterday's events I was sad but even more so I was proud to be a graduate of NIU. I love the campus, the quality education, and the town of DeKalb. It wasn't so long ago that I sat in that same lecture hall and I can only imagine having to deal with a shooter in the room. I don't want NIU to be known as "that school where the shooting happened" because there are many other wonderful, positive associations with the campus. I wore my NIU shirt today to spread the word - today as always I'm PROUD TO BE A HUSKIE!

Unfortunately this argument doesn't apply in this situation. The gunman in question purchased the shotgun LEGALLY in Champaign, IL. He used a shotgun and 3 handguns. My question is, why do we legally sell weapons like this? What purpose do they serve other then violence? I can understand hunting, but these weapons are clearly not used to hunt game.

this is soooo crazy i still cannot believe it. i am a student at NIU and, none of us ever think this kind of thing will happen to us. thank God all my friends are okay, but i greive for the lives that have been taken and the lives that have been forever changed by the selfishness of one individual. after seeing a picture of the shooter, i realized he was a teacher's assistant in a class i had taken. i had actually talked to the guy before, and i could tell something was not right with him. the world can be a horrible place. i know people are screwed up, but i still can't seem to figure out why someone has to hurt innocent people. if he wanted to die, why did he have to take others with him. a school is supposed to be a place for development. killing others in a university setting seems like such an oximoron. the thing that almost angers me the most is that this guy had the balls to shoot up a room full of hundreds of inncent people, but had no courage to face life afterwards. such a coward for turning the gun on himself.
This is pretty close to my house and where my husband graduated from college too. It is so sad, and so scary that shit like this happens in the world.

Yea, i know this kinda stuff is horrible. Just monday in my town a eight grader took a gun into his jr. high and shot and killed a poor kid. Its unbelievable when its so close to home. My prayers go out to each of those kids families who lost a child.
I am a United States citizen currently living and working in New Zealand and this makes me really sad. I was discussing this topic with co-workers and they asked the same thing Perez did "WHY does this happen in the States?" I've never been one for gun control but living in another country and hearing about all these shooting from another prespective has opened my eyes. We need tighter gun control laws!!
