A gunman opened fire at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, killing five people before taking his own life.
This shit makes us so angry!!!!
Why does it seem that kind of stuff happens so much in America but not other parts of the world????
That kind of violence just makes no sense.
Our thoughts with everyone affected by this tragedy.

I think it has something to do with how the American media sensationalizes these things. I'm Canadian, but I've been watching CNN (which I abhor) for the election coverage when I saw the breaking news of this storey. Things are just covered so differently down there. We've had shootings in schools in Canada, but to give so much coverage to these things, and to cover them in such a way as to give the perpetrators fame, maybe they see it as a final way of being heard.
If you want to see professional news coverage, watch the CBC National news. It's indepth coverage of nation and global news…and it's miles away from what CNN seems to be.
I have to say, being from Illinois makes this 10 times more scary. When VT and other school shootings have occurred, all you can do is pray, but when it happens when you know so many different people and loved ones who attend the college, you realize how scary it must have been for those at VT.
I don't understand if those bastards end up killing themselves, they should just kill themselves and only themselves.. not people who want to make something out of their lives and attend class….

I am a US citizen that believes guns need to go away. Luckily for those idiots who believe guns are still a good idea, our congress is easily influenced by lobbyists for the NRA who make sure anyone running for office does not trample on this (outdated) constitutional amendment. If you are Pro Gun Control you'll never see public service. I hope this little lesson has made it clear to all our friends to the north and abroad who can actually relax knowing there's llittle likelihood they'll be accidentally shot in a random drive by. I'm disappointed that you covered this tragedy on your website, but failed to mention anything about the junior high school student murdered in southern california on tuesday. Besides the fact that he was so young, the murdered was fueled by the gunman's distaste for the victim's homosexuality. Of course, both events were tragic and unnecessary; however, I wish you would have mentioned the other horrific and cold blooded murder. The victim not only deserves to be recognized, but mourned as well. I worked with him on a regular basis and although he may have been different than other boys his age, he was a great kid and a pleasure to work with.

You know there were four other school shootings this week. One of them was at a memphis high school. They were in gym and one guy just came in and shot his buddy. Then he handed the teacher his gun and said "here." Sure, only one or two people were killed in the other shootings, but it's still as shocking and scary.
as a NIU alumn - my heart truly goes out to all of those students, their families and the university. looking back on my 4 (and a half) years of college - they were the best years of my life and it is just heartbreaking that these students won't have those fond memories. My thoughts and prayers with them all!

yea there are alot of guns and shootings in america but, its not the only bad place. think of africa where millions die everyday from malaria, aids/hiv and other various diseases. not to mention darfur and other tribal conflicts where people are being killed just cause of the tribe they belong to. america is not the only place suffering, it could be ALOT worse.
It happens more in the US because America seem obsessed with gun culture, Americans concentrate so hard on freedom to…. in this case carry firearms meaning that people who could be at some point mentally unstable can become killing machines, it's really sad and clearly (to me) it should be freedom to go to school safely or shop safely that should be more of a priority. Yeah I live in Dekalb. It is truly horrible. This is my home. NIU is an amazing school. I cant tell you how many times I have been in and out of lecture halls just like the one that the shooting took place in. The town is not exactly tiny but no one ever thought this would happen. The warnings last year where just taken as being a way to get out of finals. I wasn't that far away when it happened. It still shocks me that this is my home. This is now a world affair but honestly it is so personal. How could so many understand the way we understand?

I'll tell you what's it feels like to live in a great country…NOT having to lock my house or car (I don't live in the country), not feeling unsafe wherever I travel in my country. Feeling proud that our government has got the balls to withdraw troops from countries they don't belong. Going to school/University/College without having to walk through a metal detector or have ANY fear whatsoever that there may be a shooting there. Enjoying an education that teaches us about cultures of the world not just our own country. Having a reputation overseas that we can be proud of, not ashamed.

To the people arguing… trying to place blame.
Honestly. It is not the nations fault. It is not NIU's fault. It is not his parents fault. This is on him. We can only do so much to protect ourselves and the people around us. This could have happened in a store or street or theater. This is just the way it went out. If we didn't have the right to bare arms then there would be an overwhelming illegal use of weapons. This would mean that there would be no training or registration ahead of time. NIU has done the best they can with what they have. We are truly grieving. It could have been anyones child. Just imagine getting a knock on your door saying not only that your child is dead but that you are 1 a horrible parent and 2 that you shouldn't honor his memory because his last must horrific act.
If this has caused anyone to do anything it should cause one to step back. Understand that life is not perfect. That hard suitions demand answers to hard questions. Be mature. Respect the communitys loss, the universitys loss, the families loss, and the countires loss. Be smart with what you say. This is painful. Think about how you could walk into a room and die within 10 min. Its reality. Are you ready to die?
I really would love it if you could pray. Yes I am a Christian and Yes praying is exactly what we all need.
Try to take something out of what I have said. Try to grow from this. It is one of the few ways that those who died did not die in vain.

i live in montreal in canada and this exact tragedy happened here last year in a college. so it does happen in other places in the world, you just dont hear about it because canada isnt as important as the united states.
Anybody who kills people like this has severe mental issues. I could never see myself doing harm to anybody unless I was being attacked and needed to defend myself, the fact that one person could easily do away with dozens of people makes me think there is a total lack of respect for the human life, I think we've come to a point in our society that we've created so many human lives that were starting to lose sight of the true value of a persons life. When one person dies it not only affects them but it affects their family and friends who love them.

I live in Illinois, and have so many friends that go to NIU. I spent my Valentines Day upset, wondering if any of my friends died in the shooting. Great job covering REAL stories that affect us. I never thought this could happen to me but it is happening. It's Colombine, Virginia Tech all over again. And this time it hit too close to home.

I dont think it has anything to do with the right to bear arms, but more so with the fact that Americans are so caught up in their own lives that they forget or choose not to created meaningful relationships with others. We are lacking social bonds with one another. Most of us can work at a company for years or live in a neighborhood for all of our lives and not know or care who our coworkers are or our neighboors. People in other countries have stronger bonds with one another and there are not as many outcasts, like the ones that usually commit these crimes
My French friends here in Paris think America is like the Wild West. There are literally NO guns here.

Thank you Perez for your condolences. I am a student at NIU. I was in Reavis Hall which is the building next to Cole Hall where the shooting happened. We saw everyone running out of Cole and they started heading into our building. Three victims were carried into our class and they were in horrible condition. One man was shot three times in the chest. There was so much blood and injured people everywhere. I will never forget this day as long as I live. It doesn't even feel real……

Is our system perfect? No, and neither is yours. Sure bad things happen when people have guns, hell bad things happen with people in cars, but I'd rather there be some problems than a Tiananmen square.

Oh, and I guess the English are trying to make themselves look more daft on here each and everyday. You don't even know your own gun laws fools, yes gun laws are strict there, but you can still get them if you want to go through enough shit, not that but you can literally walk into a shop there, buy a silencer, and walk right out, in the U.S. it takes 6+ months and even then it's not a sure bet.

It's so sad because these are students going to college, paying student loans, studying for there mid terms, it's already hard enough as it is, and now you have deal with a crazy person who has the right to have a gun.
Gun Control is a good idea yet Americans still should have the right to bear arms or own guns. Most people I know who own guns, don't carry them in public because they don't have that permit. If they transport them they can't be loaded. The point that everybody is missing is if some sick twisted mentally disturbed person is going to kill a bunch of people, they are going to do it whether they buy a gun or steal a gun.
You can't take guns out of peoples hands but you can screen who you can sell guns to and who sells guns. The problem with the screening is it's only for criminals and criminals can get guns on the street, and screening doesn't take into account a person's mental state.

I just don't understand why the gunmen just can't shoot themselves, why take other lives with them? Sad, very sad. It makes you afraid to go anywhere cuz you never know when or where things like this might happen. This is why people should'nt bully other people cuz usually this is a retaliation from that.
